"In project evaluation there are two matters of keen interest to non-executive directors: the process by which an investment recommendation is reached, as well as the investment itself, as presented. It is sometimes mistakenly believed that Boards of directors are interested only in the result. That is not so. The process by which project evaluations are derived and socialised with the Board is as important as the result, sometimes more so.Setting aside the gloomy predictions of the doomsayers and looking through short-term volatility in supply and demand, the overall availability of mineral resources more often than not exceeds demand. There are in reality more development projects in prospect at any one time than are needed to meet the market. Only the fittest will prosper, although some others may survive.Optimism springs eternal in the mining industry and every project promoter, executive or entrepreneur has a convincing project development case. Some will create value for shareholders, but the historical evidence suggests that many will fail to meet the expectations set in their evaluation.Boards of directors make the final decision to invest, or not, in a new mine. Knowledge is power, and on that basis the balance of power favours management. Management has the facts (or in some cases, what passes for fact) and the passion to invest. The non-executives have the power of approval – yes or no – but before making a decision directors must demonstrate due diligence, the essential precursor to project approval.Management has a vital part to play in facilitating that due diligence process and in encouraging the independent thought processes of the Board. A closed approach by management fosters a negative, risk-averse attitude on the part of the Board. By using knowledge-based technology to create a Virtual Mining Enterprise and integrating it with existing technical and financial computer systems, a gold mining company has been able to reduce the time taken to produce a mine plan from 14 weeks to less than one week. Typically, the mine planning process requires circulating and managing large amounts of information. Even with the use of computers in todayÆs business, this is often still a manual process involving file transfers and individualised spreadsheets. Mine planning also involves understanding and managing large quantities of complex and interrelated variables. Added to this is the ever changing dynamics and constraints associated with the business of mining. These issues not only hamper the planning process but also question the validity and usefulness of the mine plans being generated. By integrating the information and knowledge of the numerous departments involved in mine planning into one core Knowledge Base - so called æone version of the truthÆ, - mining companies are able to overcome these pitfalls experienced in traditional planning methods. Once set up, the Knowledge Base creates and runs a virtual mining enterprise with which to visualise and test various scenarios of mining, business and logistical activities. The final output is an optimised enterprise-wide plan with clear and detailed instructions for each of the divisions of the company.

The JORC Code contains a mandatory classification system for Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimates for public reporting. The classification is a statement of the Competent PersonÆs confidence in the estimate and an attempt to convey that confidence to the various users of the resource estimate. In general the classification process is either largely subjective, relying on the Competent PersonÆs experience, or relies on statistical measures derived from the estimation process, or is derived from an estimated level of confidence in the outcome. However, the statistical measures may not necessarily relate to the overall confidence in the resource or reserve which must take account of the confidence in the geological inputs to the estimation.In addition to the traditional deterministic interpretation and estimations adopted by geologists, semi-quantitative techniques are now available to improve the estimation of confidence while continuing to involve the Competent PersonÆs experience in the process. Methods for quantifying confidence in mineral resource estimates for advanced projects and operating mines have also been developed.Classification is undertaken primarily as a communication tool between the estimators and the other stakeholders in the process. A brief examination of the stakeholdersÆ requirements is included.

Laboratory-Scale Magnetohydrostatic Separator for High Resolution Density Analysis of Plastic and Other Wastes Recycling and reuse of different plastic wastes is still a current problem to solve for process engineers and it is true for seeking industrial applications as well as for smaller laboratory-scale, where a given waste sample, plastic or even metallic, has to be precisely separated into narrow density fractions to gain data for industrial design or for scientific research. The principle of magnetohydrostatic separators are known even there are industrial size machines but our primary aim was the development of a laboratory-scale separator for analysis of particles of densities up to 6 kg/L and sizes up to 8 mm. Main parts of the built experimental equipment are the ferrite core with two high power coils. The shape of the ferrite core at the two sides of the separator channel was specially designed to produce isodynamic magnetic field. In these places the ferrite core was constructed from laser cut ferrite sheets. The development of the high power electric supply for the two coils was a real challenge because the high voltage and current (400 V, 30 A) and because it had to be precisely regulated for being able to set discrete relative forces on the particles. Two separator channels were made from transparent plastic. The magnetic fluid is circulated by a centrifugal pump, fresh feed is supplied by a vibrated feeder and products can be taken by built in samplers. The velocity profile in the separator channel is measured by an ultrasonic Doppler velocity meter. Paper reports about the development and itself of the magnetohydrostatic separator and about some fundamental and applied laboratory experiments with different reference particles and wastes from used cars and electrical appliances.

Block caving has been the favoured mining method for large underground hard rock mines for the last few decades. The orebody must be of a size large enough to cave and generally amenable to a caving method. Typically, these mines ranged from 15 000 to 50 000 tonnes per day (50 kt/d) and have been some of the largest and most productive underground mines in the world.Now mining companies, in the quest for improved shareholder return, are looking for higher production rates from new underground mines. Whether a ‘Greenfields’ development, or a replacement for ageing large open pit mines, minimising capital and maximising production has been a focus of project teams. These new block cave mines are what have become known as ‘super caves’. These caves range from 80 kt/d to over 150 kt/d and are being planned or constructed by several major mining companies including Codelco, Freeport-McMoRan, Newcrest and Rio Tinto.Issues facing these super caves include high initial capital costs, very long development periods and significant technical challenges. These issues tend to make it difficult to present an attractive business case for such a project.This paper will discuss some of the potential benefits as well as the technical challenges and risks of operating a mine with the block or panel caving method at these very high tonnage rates. Considerations including geotechnical conditions, development rates, panel widths and ore column heights are discussed. Geological modelling has historically been done using sectional interpretation of paper sections or on a computer screen. Boundaries of geological units or grade shells are interpreted by a geologist section by section and the shapes are drawn onto paper to be digitised later or they are directly digitised into a computer. This approach is referred to as explicit modelling. Such methods are time consuming if there are many section lines or boundaries to be interpreted. The number of metres drilled and resource models made is increasing each year and it will be difficult to keep up using explicit modelling methods. Alternatively, it is possible to use information carried in the drill holes, known geological relationships and point estimation methods in two or three dimensions, to create similar geology boundaries, while eliminating or at least greatly reducing the need to manually interpret and digitise detailed sectional interpretations. Such methods are referred to as implicit modelling and are available in a number of software packages. Implicit modelling approaches have been used in iron ore and found to significantly reduce the time needed for modelling while producing results that are comparable or better than standard explicit modelling approaches. A number of case studies have been undertaken of implicit modelling in iron ore deposits. Stratigraphic surfaces of bedded, folded and faulted iron ore deposits have been modelled in various deposits by Leapfrog Geo, GOCAD (with SKUA) and Vulcan Integrated Stratigraphic Modelling. Leapfrog Mining was used to model iron grade shells at particular cut-off grades. The modelled surfaces are of a high standard equivalent to those that could be produced by traditional explicit modelling but the time required by the implicit methods is far less. The Homer Tunnel is located in a remote area of the South Island of New Zealand and carries large numbers of tourists to Milford Sound through an avalanche prone area. The tunnel is 1280 m long with a steep ten per cent unidirectional grade descending to the west. Construction of the tunnel began in the 1930s and was completed to a nominal 6 m width in 1954. In 1996, two passing bays were stripped-out to accommodate bi-directional flow of tourist coaches. During all phases of construction and widening there have been episodes of strain bursting.The condition of the tunnel and standard of internal services is below current international practice, principally in terms of; in-tunnel air quality, fire life safety, ground support, and road safety. A number of near-miss events have occurred involving coach fires on the approaches and inside the tunnel. The national road authority, NZTA, is considering a substantial investment to improve amenity and safety of the tunnel.This paper describes the rationale for the proposed upgrade works and the investigations undertaken to enable that design. A holistic approach to road tunnel safety has been adopted that balances the key interrelated safety drivers, namely; tunnel lining, traffic operations, ventilation, power supply and egress while ensuring continuity of safe access to Milford Sound.

Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

The coalmining industry in most countries has, at various times, suddenly been confronted with a decrease in demand for coal. Readjustments made to reduce productive capacity to match the reduced demand for coal have often resulted in hardship to mineworkers, loss of capital investment to mineowners and loss of coal reserves. The consequences of the methods of readjustment adopted in the past have contributed to the low esteem in which coalmining has come to be regarded by a large section of the gel).eral public in many countries.Four sections of the coalmining industry, representing different periods of time, different countries, and different methods of industrial organisation have been examined:Great Britain and the U.S.A. during the inter war years, the post war European Coal and Steel Community, and post war Great Britain under the National Coal Board. An assessment has been made of the methods adopted in each case to reduce productive capacity to match a reduced demand for coal. Finally the fundamentals of the problem-as it affects the coalmining industry of any country-are considered, and possible solutions put forward.During the 1950's, surplus productive capacity was a problem in many coalmining countries, including Australia and New Zealand. As a rule no techniques are developed beforehand to solve problems introduced by a sudden decrease in demand for coal. The situation is usually tackled by a series of short term decisions based on expediency, which often in the long run only aggravate the problem.

The mining industry has recognised for some time the importance of supporting programs which serve to educate the Australian public about the socio-economic benefits of mineral resource development. More recently, industry leaders have realised that the future development of the industry will depend on attracting sufficient young people to commit to a career in the industry. Apart from lending support to the traditional education institutions in Australia, the industry now has the opportunity to participate in the development of education programs in museums. Whilst historic, mining-related theme parks such as Sovereign Hill and Coal Creek in Victoria serve very effectively the objective of relating past mining activities to the socio-economic development of Australia, there still exists the need to provide a facility which, under the same roof, excites interest in geology, mining, mineral processing and the role of minerals and energy in modern society. The redeveloped Geological and Mining Museum (the "Mining Museum"), which is located in The Rocks area of Sydney, meets this objective. With the central themes of formation and transformation this new Museum, which aims to be the best of its type in the world, will use modern museum exhibit techniques and the resources of the Minerals and Energy Information Centre to educate the community including teachers and school children. In the best tradition of museums, outstanding mineral and other collections will complement a comprehensive range of interactive, high technology exhibits which will include a number of exploratory "hands on" facilities. Australian companies are joining with Government to fund this exciting new museum. There is still a need for industry professionals to realise that a modern "mining" museum is no longer just a repository for objects of mining heritage but is also an important centre which serves as an important educational and public relations interface. The Education Section of the new "Mining Museum", which is linked closely with the new Minerals and Energy Information Centre, will be working closely with appropriate mining-related Tertiary institutions to develop specific career programs aimed at secondary students who wish to pursue a career in the mineral resource industries.

On behalf of resident members, I have to offer the visitors a very cordial welcome to Mount Morgan, and to tell them that all arrangements have been made to enable them to inspect the mine and works at their own convenience, and to supply them with any particulars they may need.It is very pleasing indeed to see such a large gathering, especially on account of the long journeys many have undertaken in order to be present. The first congress in Queensland, about eleven years ago, was attended by a comparatively small number of members, and a rather long time has been allowed to pass in consequence. The large attendance at this meeting encourages the holding of meetings in Queensland more frequently. Owing to the long distances, and the number of mining centres in Australia and New Zealand, we cannot expect to meet oftener than once in six or seven years in...

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the æAMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and ReconciliationÆ project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called æthe propagation of errorÆ.

PanAust’s Phu Kham copper-gold operation (Phu Kham) in Laos is currently limited by throughput in the Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) mill. The ability to accurately predict SAG mill throughput (throughput) is therefore critical to accurately forecast copper and gold production. During the fourth quarter of 2016 the proportion of hard unweathered rocks in the mill feed increased, resulting in a period of lower than expected throughput. These low throughput rates prompted a study with the aim of identifying a practical solution for throughput predictions. The study identified an empirical modelling approach based on actual SAG mill throughput rates. The empirical model was then optimised by linear programming to identify the ideal feed blend of unweathered rocks to achieve a maximum SAG mill throughput.Rock strength was the initial focus of the throughput study at Phu Kham because previous studies had identified a strong link between rock strength and throughput. It was determined that there was insufficient valid data to adequately model but sufficient data to qualitatively characterise rock strength. The data identified that the weathering and lithology had a controlling influence on the rock strength. Complicating throughput predictions were operational improvements (changes to blasting and mill settings) implemented in response to the lower than expected throughput. This created uncertainty with the throughput equations. A self-learning empirical modelling method was developed to predict the throughput by incorporating fundamental rock properties with operational practices and improvements. The method is based on the proportion of mill feed with similar weathering and lithology (a proxy for comminution performance) and the actual mill throughput using the SAG mill as the analytical instrument. The modelling method simultaneously incorporated the sum and interaction of unmodelled influences including blasting, crushing and mill settings. The empirical modelling method worked at Phu Kham because the lithology and weathering has an intuitive and observable controlling influence on SAG mill throughput. India is well endowed with vast reserves of banded hematite ore, about 12 billion tonnes, estimated by some conventional methods. Various authors have assessed this huge reserve using some advanced geostatistical methods. A Banded Iron Formation (BIF) belt named the `Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Bonai' belt in India has been chosen as a case study. In this paper, the experiences of Chiria iron ore, in particular, have been described. This study will finally create a dynamic mineral inventory after standardising the geostatistical parameters which will help to cater for the needs of the stringent quality requirements of the Indian steel industries.

Over years of exploration the massive and tabular orebodies in the area to the South West of Western Areas Gold Mine had been assessed as containing about 50 million ounces of gold û a world class orebody. Planning initially was for a surface and subvertical shaft system to exploit this area but because of cost, a single lift shaft to an area which could be accessed ex Western Areas was planned to intersect the reef at 2760 metres. It was also planned to mine out the shaft pillar area long before the deep shafts would reach that position. This is not the normal practice in South African Gold Mines. The stoped out shaft pillar was backfilled to minimise movement in the shaft sites. The result of a competitive tender/adjudication process was that Cementation Mining û Skanska won and was awarded the R192 million contract to sink the Main and Ventilation Shafts on 15 June 1995. On 1 April 1999 Western Areas and Placer Dome SA formed a Joint Venture, which now owns and operates the mine on which the South Deep Shafts are situated. This situation prevails today.

When only wide-spaced drilling is available, for example at concept, prefeasibility and feasibility stages, properly implemented linear estimation (including ordinary kriging) predicts grade tonnage relationships that are over-smoothed compared to final production estimates (and production). Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation are alternative geostatistical approaches that can provide more reliable estimates of the recoverable tonnage and grade from wide-spaced drilling. Non-linear estimation and conditional simulation have been rarely used on iron ore deposits. However, these techniques have had wide application in other commodities such as gold and base metals. Conditional simulation has been used in the iron ore industry (eg Guibal et al, 1997); however, its use here is outlined as a means of generating non-linear estimates, not just its use for variability and drill spacing analysis. As a rule, regardless of commodity, the decision to use non-linear geostatistics will necessitate increased skills and require more time. This decision must therefore be justified in terms of cost-benefit. Such cost-benefit analysis is not straightforward, and to help an approach for determining when linear estimates are inadequate is presented. Recommend in this paper is a well-established non-linear geostatistical approach, the global ædiscrete Gaussian modelÆ (DGM) of change of support, as a tool to establish whether moving from linear to non-linear estimates will materially improve estimate results. Also discussed is the additional use of DGM as a block model validation tool. One specific factor contributing to the lack of application of non-linear geostatistical methods in iron is the added difficulties that arise when conditional simulation and non-linear estimates are required to reproduce the numerous and often important correlations between variables in iron ore deposits. Consequently, presented in the paper is a synoptic review of non-linear estimation and simulation methodologies applicable to correlated variables.

This paper describes in detail the controlled blasting adopted and the measurements undertaken for the successful excavation of large twin tunnels under a shallow cover for a six-lane highway project in India. The tunnels are D-shaped, each 15 m in diameter, and the cover between the tunnels and the existing railway track was about 14 m. These twin tunnel tubes were characterised by two separate three-lane carriageways for each direction of traffic, and were planned with about 25 m of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) portals at the entrance and exit of the tunnels. The major challenge of the project was the blasting of tunnels in rock below an operating railway line. As the tunnels approached the area below the railway line, the ground vibrations were monitored vertically above the blasting faces and on the railway track sleepers. Vibration intensities between those generated from tunnel blasting and those from the movement of the trains were compared, and it was found that the vibrations from blasting were lower than those from the moving trains. Though the permissible level of ground vibration based on the Indian Standard (IS) code happens to be 70 mm/s, the maximum charge per delay was calculated restricting this limit to 50 mm/s. This ensured that the vibrations in the vicinity of the railway tracks never exceeded the prescribed limit of 70 mm/s. The surface ground settlement before and after the blasts were also measured using an optical levelling instrument, which confirmed that there was no significant impact on the surface movements due to blasting. Extensometer readings inside the tunnels showed that there was no deformation in the tunnel. Beaches contain the residue of eroded rocks which have resisted weathering, and it is common to find in all beaches some of the harder, heavy minerals. The natural sorting action of waves and winds tends to concentrate the heavy minerals into banded deposits.The value of such deposits is extremely variable. Even amongst the more concentrated deposits, the principal minerals, in the vast majority of cases, are magnetic, titaniferous magnetite and other forms of iron oxide, which, in the present state of mineral economics and technology, are of little or no value.Valuable minerals of fairly common occurrence in beach sand deposits are rutile, zircon, ilmenite, monazite and chromite, and each of these minerals, as well as others of less common occurrence, is obtained from beach deposits in various parts of the world.Along a stretch of 300 miles of coast from Coff's Harbour in New South Wales to North Stradbroke Island in Queensland, occur unique concentrations of heavy minerals. The principal minerals which occur are rutile, zircon and ilmenite, and for some years these deposits have contributed half to three-quarters of the world's consumption of rutile and zircon 1, ,2. The only other notable beach sand concentrations in Australia are at a number of places in the southwest of Western Australia, where deposits containing highgrade ilmenite are being developed.
