Fibre-reinforced geopolymer concrete (FRGC) contains no Portland cement or steel reinforcement, but instead uses synthetic fibre reinforcement and a geopolymer binder. The use of geopolymer binder in lieu of Portland cement reduces the concrete’s embedded energy (CO2 emissions) whilst the use of synthetic fibres eliminates the issue of reinforcement corrosion, thus enhancing the overall long-term durability of concrete. This paper presents the development of FRGC during a three-year project funded by the Victorian Science Agenda and a consortium of five organisations. The work involved laboratory and field trials and the production of prototype tunnel segments that have been subject to durability and fire testing.FRGC has exceeded the performance of the Portland cement-based control mix in terms of flexural strength, chloride diffusion, water sorptivity and drying shrinkage. Furthermore, the FRGC segments subjected to a simulated hydrocarbon fire test did not exhibit explosive spalling; however, the creep of FRGC was approximately three times that of the steel fibre-reinforced Portland cement-based control mix. The compressive strength and tensile splitting strength of the FRGC were also lower than the control mix. These differences need to be allowed for in the design using FRGC.Prototype bolted tunnel segments of up to 0.8?t mass have been produced from FRGC using standard production techniques and ambient curing. These were successfully produced within a 24-hour production cycle. Cut sections through the segments showed good compaction and even distribution of fibres. The estimated carbon footprint of tunnel segments produced using FRGC is approximately 70 per cent less than that of Portland cement-based segments containing 25 per cent fly ash and steel reinforcement.The results to date indicate that FRGC has the potential to produce a new generation of tunnel segments and, in general, precast concrete products with increased durability and substantially reduced carbon emissions compared to the Portland cement-based concrete with steel reinforcement.A summary of further research carried out by CH2M HILL into a complete elimination of ferrous inserts from segmental concrete tunnel lining is also summarised in this paper. The use of non-ferrous connectors for radial joints in combination with the FRGC technology in the manufacture of tunnel segments will effectively lead to development of a new generation of segmental tunnel lining systems.CITATION:Wimpenny, D, Chappell, M and Wieloch, M, 2014. This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

The breakage and flow characteristics of quartz, ground as a minor constituent with calcite in a continuous wet ball mill, have been determined by carefully controlled grinding tests.A mathematical model, combining the simple functions which describe these characteristics, has been used to predict both steady state and non steady state results.The calculated results are compared with experimental data.

This paper looks at the past, present and not too distant future of grinding mill relining.Since the adoption of autogenous grinding (AG) mills and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills as the primary ore reducing devices in the comminution circuit, plant shutdown frequency and duration has largely been driven by the liner maintenance requirements of these mills.The past 30 years have seen the introduction of many technologies to reduce relining times and frequencies. Advanced relining systems have been developed which include single and twin Mill Relining Machines, capable of placing large (up to 8000 kg) liners, high energy recoilless THUNDERBOLT Hammers, and high capacity Feed Chute Transporters. Despite these advances, today many of the hazards associated with mill relining remain and reline times still vary considerably between mine sites. A sophisticated discrete event simulation program, designed to analyse the mill relining process, has revealed the dominant influences on reline times of crew performance and of the need for safe access to larger segments of the mill.A new generation of advanced and semi-automated technologies is currently being tested that will address these remaining challenges. The overwhelming weight of scientific opinion indicates that human activity is having a discernible and negative influence on the earthÆs climate system. The Australian Government, together with about 100 other nations, has accepted the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change third assessment report, released in 2001. This report was prepared by several hundred eminent scientists from all over the world, from various scientific disciplines and with differing opinions on global warming. The IPCC third assessment report contains a series of relevant, significant conclusions; for example, it finds that there is an increasing body of observations that gives a collective picture of a warming world and other changes in the climate system. Global average surface temperature increased over the past 100 years by about 0.6¦C. This may not seem much, but in the 900 years beforehand, the EarthÆs temperature remained relatively stable. The 20th century was the warmest of the past 1000 years in the northern hemisphere (there is much better information available from the northern hemisphere than the southern hemisphere). The 1990s were the warmest decade of the millennium in the northern hemisphere and 1998 was the warmest year. Although many factors influenced the EarthÆs climate, scientists are confident that greenhouse gas increases were the main factor contributing to global warming in the last 50 years of the 20th century. Increases in carbon dioxide, methane, troposhperic (lower atmosphere) ozone, halocarbons and nitrous oxide have all contributed to global warming. Combating climate change cannot be done without the cooperation of industry and the community at large. It is important that Government and industry work together to achieve greenhouse gas abatement while ensuring continued economic growth. The cause of the problem û the generation of greenhouse gas emissions û lies at the heart of the structure and size of modern economic activity. Greenhouse gas emissions are embedded in our way of life from our energy consumption patterns to the basic production of food. Moreover, the costs of the impacts of climate change to the earth will be potentially revolutionary, not merely evolutionary. It is in this light, acknowledging both the seriousness and nature of the problem before us that I want to reflect on the key drivers in the international climate change negotiations. A consideration of the past, present and future from what I see as the mid-way point in the process. In 1997, Parties agreed to adopt the Kyoto Protocol, which sets out mandatory targets for greenhouse gas emissions for developed countries.

There is a growing interest in magnetite ores because of the increasing demand for this commodity. With these ores, there is significant cost associated with milling the ore to fine sizes using ball mills in closed circuit with hydrocyclones. Cyclone classification efficiency tends to be poor due to the large difference in density between magnetite and gangue. This decreases the grinding circuit efficiency and results in over-grinding of magnetite. The objective of the work described in this paper was to modify the Bond locked cycle milling test procedure to quantify the loss of grinding circuit efficiency due to the mineral density effect. The locked cycle test procedure described here includes a stage of magnetic separation treating the closing screen undersize, which allows simulation of magnetite classification. The effect of classifier efficiency on low-density particles (non-magnetics) was simulated by altering the proportion of closing screen undersize bypass returning to the mill. Using a magnetic separator and a screen in the magnetics stream, different proportions of the magnetic fraction can be bypassed, thus allowing simulation of the effect of particle density on classification efficiency. This laboratory test work has confirmed that the impact of mineral density on cyclone efficiency subsequently has a crucial negative effect on ball mill circuit capacity. The results are in good agreement with reductions in capacity observed in practice. Multicomponent grinding and classification models were also developed in the LIMN software environment and were able to successfully simulate both the industrial and the laboratory ball mill circuit. "Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes. As mines get deeper, the critical underground temperature limits will be exceeded, and an increasing number of mines will need to implement, expand or modify cooling systems. Surface cooling plants have many advantages over underground cooling such as efficient heat rejection, and lower relative capital cost; however the delivery of cooling through long underground distances can result in lost refrigeration capacity before the chilled air reaches the areas it is needed most. Refrigeration plants are therefore often overdesigned in size and capacity to compensate for underground losses.More mines are now utilising real-time monitoring and automated control of ventilation airflow and fan systems to ensure the conditions underground are safe and productive, and power consumption is efficiently managed. There may be significant opportunities to extend ventilation monitoring and control into the refrigeration delivery and control system.Energy reduction is an effective way to reduce costs and CO2 emissions, which is an increasingly important part of corporate governance. More efficient refrigeration control is a further step toward reducing energy consumption. This paper looks at an added step in how real-time monitoring can assist in controlling the output and chilled air delivery of a cooling plant. The requirements, implementation, benefits and challenges will be discussed.

Delivered at the University of Sydney, on June 4th, 1954.THE TORCH WE HOLDLast year Our Institute celebrated its Diamond Jubilee, coincident with the holding of the Fifth Empire Mining and Metallurigcal Congress in Australia and New Zealand. We can be proud of our growth over the 61 years since the inaugural meeting in Adelaide in April, 1893, which followed suggestions from a provisional committee of mining men, formed in 1892 in Broken Hill.We can also be proud of our technical achievements in the fields of economic geology, mining and metallurgy.Should we be content with the growth of our mining and metallurgical industries over these years? My answer is in the negative. The discovery of new mineral deposits is essential for the continuance and development of the industries we represent.Let me review the background and trends of our industry in an attempt to emphasise the changing factors influencing the search for minerals and their exploitation.Australia was blessed with the discovery of coal in New South Wales in 1796; copper in South Australia at Kapunda, Burra, Wallaroo and Moonta in the eighteen-forties; gold in Victoria and Eastern Australia in the 'fifties; tin at Mount Bischoff, Tasmania, and gold at Charters Towers, Queensland, in the 'seventies; lead-silver at Broken Hill, New South Wales; gold and copper at Mount Morgan, Queensland, and copper at Mount Lyell, Tasmania, in the 'eighties; and gold at Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and zinc-lead atRosebery, Tasmania, in the 'nineties. Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

TheSan Cristobal gold district is located 110 km east of the port of Antofagasta, Chile. It contains the San Cristobal gold mine, where Niugini Mining Ltd. commenced a heap leach operation, with initial reserves of 10.1 million tonnes grading 1.34 g/t Au, in December, 1990. The San Cristobal district occurs within an upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary magmatic arc. The main mineralisation occurs within a northwest trending subvertical zone, 1km long and 70 - 100 m wide, which contains rhyolite porphyry and minor breccia, and is locally termed the 'subvolcanic complex'. At the San Cristobal mine, most gold mineralisation occurs in subvertical quartz-pyrite veins which were emplaced in dilational sections of an imbricate fault system. The bulk gold resource comprises four ore shoots which formed where the vein system intersects the subvolcanic complex. Gold-bearing quartz-pyrite veins also occur at separate prospects, the Three Sisters and Sol prospects, west and south of the San Cristobal mine.   Hydrothermal alteration consists of potassic and propylitic assemblages related to intrusion of the subvolcanic complex. This alteration is overprinted by a phyllic stage which is associated with the emplacement of the quartz-pyrite veins. The oxide zone is 180 m thick, and contains native gold, electrum, limonite, and manganocarbonates. The underlying hypogene zone contains pyrite with minor chalcopyrite, sphalerite, galena, covellite, bornite, chalcocite, and arsenopyrite. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit formed at approximately 270¦C, and the mean salinity of the fluid was 4% NaCl equivalent. These observations enable the San Cristobal deposit to be classed as a porphyry- related, mesothermal quartz-vein system of the low sulphidation type.

The assistance that can be gained by the use of aerial photographs in the geological examination of a mineral field is clearly illustrated by the results of a rapid reconnaissance survey of the newly-discovered Mount Fitton talc, deposits, situated in the north-eastern extension of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia.The talc deposits were found to occur about the margins of a large lenticular mass of dolomitic marble, interbedded with hornfelsic tillites and fluvio-glacial sediments of Upper Pre-Cambrian age. Aerial photographs show clearly the extent of the dolomitic marble on which the growth of a species of eucalypt-Eucalyptus Gillei-is prominently developed, and which assists in defining the limits of this relatively light-coloured formation. (See Fig. 1).Upon field investigation it was found that the talc, deposits are related closely to the margin of the dolomitic marble where the latter has been subject to minor folding and faulting. The deposits themselves have been formed by metasomatic replacement of schistose dolomite. The contact of the dolomite with the underlying and overlying glacial beds is also noteworthy for the presence of minor occurrences of copper, silver, lead and zinc minerals.An examination of photographs covering a wide area reveals an outcrop of a massive granite to the north-east of the dolomitic marble, Fig. 2, which was almost certainly responsible for the regional metamorphism of the dolomitic and glacigene sediments, and the source of the mineralising solutions.All these features, as well as the broader structural features of the area, which are extremely important in the understanding of, individual commercial depQsits, were quickly determined with the assistance of the photographs.It is useful, briefly to relate the procedure adopted in examining this recently developed field as an example which may be well worth following on other fields, even if exposures are not so clearly defined. The method to be outlined, of course, will be of maximum advantage. Where rock exposures are good, where the ore bodies are likely to be widely spread, and where such bodies are related to some major geologi-cal control. Typical of such deposits are pegmatitic, hydrothermal and related ore bodies associated with the periphery of an igneous intrusion, or ore bodies related to particular sedimentary horizons in a regionally metamorphosed province.Procedure.The first requirement is the preparation of a detailed reconnaissance geological plan of as large segment as possible of the potentially mineralised province. Reclamation field trials commenced in 1985, two years before the granting of the Mining Licence. The level of pasture production on varying soil depths (0 cm, 5 cm, 15 cm and 25 cm) overlying both tailings and oxidised waste overburden was assessed.   After seven years, the rate of increase of N, C, P and S, losses of Sand P and pH changes were investigated on the plots where grass seed was sown into bare tailings. It was determined that on these plots it would take approximately 24 years to reach the original carbon and nitrogen levels at the mine site. Further tailings trials have been initiated to investigate alternative land use options for the tailings dam. Growth increases of 73% occurred in native species growing directly in tailings, and growth increases of 78% occurred in tailings amended with compost over the first six months. Pasture trials on tailings with and without a compost amendment have also been initiated. Research has commenced to investigate the restoration options for acid producing pit slopes. The early field trials have been put into practice with the restoration of oxidised waste on the tailings embankment. This is progressive with approximately 16 ha restored to productive pasture at present. Yields compare well with those of the most versatile and productive soils types investigated in baseline studies of the area before the tailings dam was constructed.

Results are reported of a study of the reactions occurringin the combustion of chaIcopyrite particles underconditions simulating those in the shaft of a flashsmelter.The reactions were studied using kinetic and mineralogicaltechniques. Reactions. rates above 500°C wererapid, most of the reaction taking place in less than 50ms. Final products were copper-iron ferrites with spineltype structures. Probable reaction mechanisms are discussed.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. Such modal analysis is not possible using standard Fourier methods.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 krn NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity. The deposit is mostly overlain by younger Proterozoic sediments and later Cambrian age limestone cover and only a small proportion of the mineralisation crops out. Mineralisation has a subtle surface expression without a classic gossan profile, probably due to the low iron sulphide content of the ore. These factors contributed materially to the length of time between the first recognition of lead-zinc-silver mineralisation in the area by prospectors in the 1880s, to the discovery of the orebody by CRA Exploration Pty Ltd (CRAE) in April 1990.   Small scale prospecting and mining continued in the area from the date of the first mining lease in 1887. Post 1950, the deposit area was also included within nine separate regional exploration titles prior to CRAE's title acquisition in 1987. CRAE's original exploration strategy was partly pragmatically and partly conceptually inspired, but the eventual discovery only partly conformed to the original conceptual model. The deposit was found higher in the stratigraphy than the original target position, with unexpectedly low total sulphide content relative to other known deposits.   The discovery soil anomaly was located by the CRAE's first regional orientation traverse line in the area, but was not drill tested for three years. The discovery sequence at Century has strong elements of persistence, technical competence and some luck. It demonstrates that even in well explored terrains (by conventional standards) the exploration story can never be said to be over. The foreshadowed development of an economic resource at Century will hopefully inspire continued commitment to 'brownfields' exploration by mining companies, and demonstrate to external regulators the importance of genuine multiple land use strategies and the need for continued access to land for exploration and mining purposes.

Macraes Mining has had a 30 per cent interest in the project since May 1984, when it was incorporated. Project financing in the way of a gold loan was secured in February 1990 and construction commenced shortly afterwards. The mine construction activities were completed within nine months and the mine commenced operations in October 1990.

The grade of ore at Marvel Loch mine is directly related to the presence or absence of shear zones and quartz-sulfide-rich hornblende (¦ diopside) veining within areas of plagioclase alteration. An experienced geologist can identify these features in hand specimen. Practical rules have been developed to assist this visual identification. The structural sites and styles of alteration and veining most conducive to gold mineralisation have also been determined. The work has enabled a better understanding of the geological controls on mineralisation at Marvel Loch, and has clarified geological understanding for optimisation of grade control modeling, ore block mark-ups, and minimisation of ore loss and dilution during excavation. In addition to this, it has enabled a detailed understanding of mine scale structural controls, geometry and relative grade relationships.
