The requirement of the residue for underground filling.Originally the conditions in this district varied mainly in the position of the mill, some mills having an elevated site with plenty of dumping space for the time being, whilst others had a flat site, and very little dumping space near at hand; but in most cases the residue discharged was in the form of filter-press cakes, suitable for conveying on belts, or in trucks, and stacking in a high clump; and, while a portion of the residue was used for underground filling, the dump was regarded as a valuable asset, to be re-treated later. Under these conditions, conveyor belts, electric trams, aerial trams, and hose trucks, all gave satisfactory results, and the following figures, taken from "'West Australian Metallurgical Practice," will show how these methods compared as regards costs...

Supergene processes in banded iron formation (BIF) result in important dissolution, material transport and simultaneous disorder of the residual bands. The rock physical properties such as density, porosity and rheology change during the weathering attack. The itabirite, Paleoproterozoic metamorphic BIF from Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) û Brazil, shows several weathered facies. Strong linking between topographic surface, rock density and iron grade occurs within the weathered zones. This linking is due to partial dissolution of silica and carbonate from itabirite and gravitational rotation and break of the remaining blades, generating kink-like slump structures. The original itabirite density, 3.7 t/m3, decrease at the first leaching steps, until 2.7 t/m3, and increase at the end of the leaching process until 3.6 t/m3. Iron grade increases from 38 per cent to 68 per cent and depressions (sinkhole), subsequently filled by Cenozoic basinal sediments, are developed over the enrichment zones. The formation of important supergene iron ore deposits of QF is intimately related to such a process. Several iron deposits at QF, such as Pico do Itabirito, Fßbrica Nova, Casa de Pedra, Tamanduß, -gua Claras, Cappo Xavier, etc., reveal the aspects related to the proposed evolution, implying that the formational process of the soft iron ores had a regional character. Granular medium model helped in the understanding of the development of the structure and the formation of the deposits. A numerical model has been developed in order to simulate a leaching system in a two-dimensional matrix, composed of two types of materials: leachable and unleachable. Equal volume proportion and vertical banding were considered. Drilling data was used as multipoint attractors to remove leachable matrix nodes.

The discovery of the Nyidinghu Iron Ore Deposit totalling 2.46 Bt of resource continues FortescueÆs highly successful exploration record of discovering multi-billion tonne deposits under cover with little to no surface expression. Since inception in 2003 Fortescue have discovered and delineated the Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak deposits in the Chichester Range totalling 3.38 Bt and 3.25 Bt in the Solomon region. Together with other deposits Fortescues resource portfolio now approximates 10 Bt of hematite - goethite mineralisation.The Nyidinghu deposit is situated on the southern margin of the Fortescue Valley, 35 km south of FortescueÆs Cloudbreak mining operations on the north margin of the valley. Nyidinghu comprises approximately 70 per cent BID martite - goethite mineralisation hosted by the Brockman Iron Formation and 30 per cent CID beneath alluvial outwash of the Weeli Wolli Creek in to the Fortescue Valley. Minor DID mineralisation occurs at the deposit margins.BID mineralisation is strongly controlled by the pre-existing NE/SW trending Weeli Wolli Fault system and bounded to the north by the Poonda Fault. Both fault systems are interpreted to have had a long and complex history commencing pre Ophthalmian Orogeny (ca 2.2 Ga) and remaining intermittently active through the Proterozoic.CID at Nyidinghu is the downstream continuation of the combined Weeli Wolli/Marillana CID palaeochannel system being mined by Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton at Yandicoogina and Yandi, respectively.Exploration commenced in August 2010 with the inaugural resource announcement of 1 Bt being made just six months later. To date over 1700 RC and 85 diamond core holes have been drilled forming the basis for the resource of 2.46 Bt and ongoing feasibility studies. The only economically significant deposit of dolomite in New Zealand is at Mount Burnett, in north-west Nelson. The dolomite, associated with marbles and schists, is complexly deformed, and is of Paleozoic age.A very large quantity is present, although the recoverable amount is to some extent limited by the difficult terrain.Physically the quality of the dolomite is excellent. It is a tough, durable, fine grained rock. Chemically it is a little more variable. The range and frequency o~ the more important impurities are illustrated by hlstograms, as is the "dolomite factor"-a measure of the amount of the mineral dolomite in the rock. lbe dolomite factor averages 84 per cent, the remainder of the rock consisting largely of calcite. Quarrying, milling, production, and uses are described. In 1966 production reached 13,250 tons.

Paste backfill has been adopted by many underground mines in North America and a growing number elsewhere. Paste offers a number of advantages. This paper suggests wider applications of paste technology to surface tailings disposal and water management. Advantages include improved overall stability, potentially easier permitting, smaller water inventory and earlier reclamation. It may be feasible to use the same plant to prepare backfill and to dispose of surplus tailings. Example cost models are given to illustrate potential applications.

This Mesoarchean deposit belongs to the 3230 Ma Pincunah banded-iron formations (BIF), a member of the Kangaroo Caves Formation, Sulfur Springs Group (van Kranendonk, 2000).

Although mining, particularly of gold and coal, played a significant role in the development of New Zealand, from the time of the spectacular gold rushes of the 1860s its economic importance to the country as a whole has decreased substantially since that time. Gold, coal and non-metallic agricultural and industrial minerals have been found in economically significant quantities, however, the search for base metals has not been successful.

WMC was a late entrant into Indonesia in mid-1996, but had considerable experience and success in exploring in Asia, particularly the Philippines since 1988. Given the geological similarities to the Philippines and IndonesiaÆs superior æcradle to graveÆ Contract of Work (CoW) tenure system, the entry into Indonesia was a logical decision but nonetheless a result of detailed planning. At the time of WMCÆs entry, Busang in Kalimantan was still a 60 moz wonder and the euphoria of this apparent discovery had overflowed into every aspect of exploration. Many junior mining companies and tenement speculators were clamouring for properties in Kalimantan, whilst other serious and capable explorers had to compete for properties and exploration personnel in an era of high and often unrealistic expectations. The picture in late-1998 and through 1999 is dramatically different, as the worldwide downturn in the price of most metals coincides with financial and social crises throughout most Asian countries. The impact of this has been particularly severe in Indonesia and when coupled with the negative sentiment of the Busang fraud has resulted in an exodus of junior companies and also some of the majors. This is understandable given the much publicised social unrest, uncertainty of government, mooted changes to the eighth generation CoW, increasing illegal mining and heightened community expectations. The reality however is somewhat different and although clearly a crisis in many respects, it is also a time of great opportunity.

The theme of the conference this year is diversification. One way to diversify is through acquisition. The principle underlying the winner's curse is that in competitive bidding situations where the value of the asset bid for is uncertain the winning bid will overstate the true value of the asset. The successful bidder is blessed with the winner's curse. What this paper will explore is to what extent this is true; how acquirers can avoid being blessed with the winners curse; and show how joint venture deal structures are used within the mining industry to avoid the winners curse.

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017. The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

The Central Maratoto Valley in the Coromandel Peninsula contains a sequence of veins in pervasively altered dacite + andesites of the Waipupu Formation. We recognise at least eight different vein types: (1) pyrite stringers, (2) quartz + carbonate veins, (3) crystalline quartz veins, (4) carbonate veins, (5) chlorite + carbonate veins, (6) siderite veinlets, (7) siderite + carbonate veins and (8) carbonate + pyrite veins. The overall temporal trend of the veins is from early pyrite to quartz and then to late carbonate veins. Carbonate veins and pyrite stringers both form planar and irregular veins, whereas some carbonate veins have diffuse contacts with the wall rock. Gold and base metal sulphides are associated with some of the quartz + carbonate veins. Textures within the veins reflect open space filling and multi-phase reopening. A partial record of hydrothermal activity has been preserved by vein crosscutting relationships, hydrothermal alteration minerals and fluid inclusions. Hydrothermal alteration minerals display zonation from south to north. The alteration increases from unaltered to weak propylitic alteration of andesite in the south (MVRCDC1), to sericitic alteration of andesite and dacite in the north (MVRCDC3). The alteration assemblage is dominantly sericitic, with no adularia present, drawing parallels to the Thames region where there is no adularia.

The following brief observations on the mineral composition of the Mt. Oxide copper ore are intended to supplement the geological description of that ore-body recently published by Blanchard (2).'" The Mt. Oxide copper mine is situated about 45 miles W.N.W. of Dobbyn, in the Cloncurry district of Queensland (Fig. 1). A representative suite of specimens from the mine was obtained through the kindness of Mr. P. B. Nye, Executive Officer of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia, and Mr. Jack Hall, the tributor of the Mt. Oxide mine. The specimens, as shown in Fig. 2, were nearly all from the sulphide zone, between the l04-ft. level and the 300-ft. level. There is an alternative theory of the high grade orebodies of the Middleback Group, based on the primary nature of the high grade ores in an area of carbonate deposition, with lesser amounts of siliceous and aluminous sediments. The environment is thought to have been unstable, possibly volcanic, and to have been a subsiding basin, substantially isolated from the open sea.Jaspilites, iron bearing talc rocks and iron bearing carbonate rocks were derived from the primary sediments by metasomatic alteration after metamorphism.The metasomatic agents were carbon dioxide and water vapour which were mobilized from the primary dolomite and reacted with a metamorphically produced group of iron bearing and iron free amphiboles, forming talc and progressively releasing silica and iron oxides from the iron amphiboles.The talc rocks in turn released silica which reconstituted jaspilites into their present 200 ft thick crust or zone.The theory accounts for the present disposition of a jaspilite zone over a talc zone which in turn overlies a carbonate zone, and accounts for the down dip changes found in bores which penetrate these zones.INTRODUCTIONIron Duke (Fig. 1) lies some 34 miles south west of WhyalIa in South Australia, and is the most southerly ore body in the Middleback Ranges.The Middleback Ranges are divided into a northern range and a southern range meridionally disposed and separated by an erosion gap called Kimba Gap.The South Middleback Range contains four orebodies;Iron Duke at the southern extremity, Iron Duchess north of Iron Duke and on the same ridge, Iron Knight also on the same ridge, which has been breached by erosion between theDuchess and Knight orebodies, and north east of Iron Knight, the Iron Chieftain.Cook's Range is the eastern range of the South Middleback Range and no large orebodies are known to occur there.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed.
