Currently in Canada there are 15 major mining companies with a minimum of $1 billion in market capitalization or net private value. This group forms the core of an important sector for Canada. The mining sector had gross revenues of about $35 billion in 1988. This compares to a Canadian GDP of $410 billion in 1988. There are at least three different sub-groups within the mining group, each facing the future with very different prospects for the coming years.

The design of primary sample cutters for high-capacity conveyors is critical to achieving a correct sample, both in collecting the sample and ensuring smooth sample discharge flow. Modelling usually occurs at the design stage and requires extensive experience to achieve the correct result. However, it is difficult to confirm the effectiveness of the cutter design until after installation. Even with high-speed video, confirmation of complete sample capture is difficult, especially if the material characteristics change over time. Recent investigation using discrete element method (DEM) simulation to model the flow of the ore into the cutter and observe how it interacts with the cutter has revealed some interesting design requirements not observed in the past. By including DEM modelling, the correct design and optimisation of the cutter can be more accurately determined prior to commissioning.CITATION:Hidding, M and Shaw, R, 2017. General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

This brief overview of the history of Brown Coal mining in Victoria is a luncheon presentation -I do not intend to make it indigestible with extensive listings of resources or production. There is a vast pantry of collated historical records and of vari- ous predictive studies available for the enquired with a hearty digestion. A gourmet collation is provided in The Aus IMM Monograph No 11 published in 1984 entitled "Victoria's Brown Coal-A HUGE FORTUNE IN CHANCERY", currently still on offer by the Institute and available at a bargain price in the foyer at this conference. Monograph No 11 also provides a feast of excellent references on the theme of Victorian Brown Coal assembled by the several contributors. In contrast, my presentation paper is a fast-food service, extracts from the printed paper only-you have no choice-you "get what you get" and in small quantity. Gas explosion in underground coal workings can pose a serious threat to the safety of mine workers and the entire mine operations. Gas explosion is a very complex thermal-chain reaction in a confined underground environment. Based on combustion and explosion theory, three dimensional (3D) computational models were developed to simulate mine gas explosion flame and overpressure wave propagation in a single entry gateroad in underground coalmines. Six different explosion scenarios were modelled and compared with large scale experimental results and AutoReaGas simulations. Model validations show that the use of shear-stress transport (SST) k-? model together with eddy-dissipation model (EDM) produces good agreement with both experimental and AutoReagas simulation results. Modelling results demonstrated that the changes of temperature versus time can be divided into four stages, ie the initial condition stage, and periods of warm-up, active burning, and burnt-out. Assuming a limited volume of methane is involved in the explosion, the maximum temperature decreases as the distance increases from the explosion point, with the highest temperature reaching about 2460 K. Modelling results show that the evolution of the explosion flame shape experiences four typical stages, ie spherical flame, finger-shape flame, flame with the skirt touching the side walls (ribs) and tulip flame, which are similar to the pattern of a duct explosion. The pressure in the gateroad remains the same as the initial value before the arrival of the explosion wave and then increases rapidly to the maximum value. PasmincoÆs Century Concentrator in North West Queensland commenced operations in November 1999. The nameplate production capacity of 500 000 tpa of zinc metal production in concentrate was achieved in August 2002. Completion of the production ramp up was successful due to the culmination of a number of initiatives throughout 2001 and 2002. Mine to mill interaction to understand and eliminate head grade related bottlenecks affecting Concentrator production and reduce feed variation. Grinding circuit process development û operating and process control strategies to improve stability and reduce grind size to support zinc recovery. Pumping upgrades to control spillage in ultrafine zinc flotation Low density zinc flotation strategy û to improve silica-sphalerite separation to improve zinc recovery while maintaining acceptable silica in final concentrate. Flotation circuit process development û froth crowders, froth cameras and reagent control strategies to improve primary zinc flotation performance. Review and implementation of longer campaigns between planned shutdowns to improve availability. Team reorganisation û to improve setting and implementation of metallurgical strategies. This paper describes these initiatives and their contribution in achieving the production target. It also notes the ball mill motor failures that delayed the successful achievement of the ramp up, and CenturyÆs response to minimise the production impact. The paper also outlines the capital improvement program that was implemented to improve zinc recovery to design 82.5 per cent recovery once the production rate had been achieved.

A two-stage stochastic mixed integer non-linear program is formulated for a mining complex to optimise strategic and tactical plans. The objective is to find the near optimal decisions for a mineral supply chain in the context with uncertainties in both ore supply and the commodity market (price and demand). The endogenous spot price in the commodity market and long-term sales contracts are considered in the formulation of the mining complex’s optimisation model and an ad hoc heuristic is developed to deal with the throughput – and head-grade-dependent recovery rate in processing plants. Numerical results indicate that the proposed heuristic is effective and efficient in numerical tests. Based on the proposed model and heuristic, a long-term contract design strategy is proposed for making decisions on the contract price and strategic investments. The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. The polymerisation of silica is found to interfere with thickening of leach pulps at Risdon. Hydroxyl ion and fluoride ion are catalysts for this reaction. Stability may be obtained by the presence of aluminium or ferric iron.INTRODUCTIONAt Risdon it has been a matter for satisfaction that, although the concentration, of silica in leach solutions is appreciable, it has ,given relatively little cause for anxiety.However the margin of safety is small and some intermittent difficulty in thickening leach residues during the last few years has prompted a further investigation, certain parts of which are described here since they may be of general interest.Leaching and ClassificationThe method of leaching which is practised at Risdon has been described in, two previous articles, by W. C. Snow (1936) and S. W. Ross (1949) to whiCh the reader is referred for detail. Continuous leaching is practised, the circuit solution flowing through five air agitated pachucas in series, to tlie first of which calcine is added. The circuit solution, which also enters the first pachuca, consists of spent electrolyte from, the electrolytic cells and contains 90 -gm. of free sulphuric acid per litre. About 80 per cent of the solublezinc oxide is extracted from the calcine in the first pachuca, at a pH value of 1-1 (7 gm.H2S04/1 at 55 to 60°C. In the later pachucas the leaching rate decreases sharply. The leach pulp which leaves the 'last pachuca contains an average of 17 gm. of free acid per litre, corresponding to a pH of 1.7; but, owing to variations in extraction, the end point fluctuates between 2.5 and 0·3 gm. free acid per litre (pH:> 1·5 to 2.5). The average flow through the plant is 1,250,000 gallons per day, which corresponds to a production of 300...

Reconciliation at large iron ore operations is a complex and time- consuming process. Often the volume of data and the large range of different stakeholders makes the process almost impossible. Up until recently geologists and engineers at these operations would spend hours cutting and pasting data in and out of monster spreadsheets, diligently comparing how resource/reserve models, grade control and survey pick-ups compare to what was actually produced. In 2003 the Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa broke this cycle by implementing SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software. The implementation of a dedicated reconciliation system required a number of existing practices to be changed, with the involvement of stakeholders right across the mine. Data sources had to be clarified and validated, terminology had to be standardised, processes needed to be documented and some methodologies needed to be updated. This was a task that required significant effort by Kumba personnel so that the system could be successfully implemented. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Sishen. It is a story of an operation that evolved from using a number of fragmented reconciliation processes to using a unified automated system. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements that are used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web-based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about the benefits that have been gained though the use of a rigorous reconciliation process.

Magnetite ore blending has yielded signifi cant performance improvements in OneSteel’s magnetite concentrator. The magnetite concentrator beneficiates magnetite ore from the Iron Magnet Deposit and produces concentrate, which is pelletised, then fed to the OneSteel Whyalla blast furnace. Concentrator feed variability severely detracts from the concentrator’s performance, affecting both concentrate yield and grade, which impacts on all downstream processing costs.A coordinated approach has integrated mine planning, geological modelling and grade control, to minimise concentrator feed variability, through effective ore blending throughout the mining and stockpiling process.Mine planning personnel design shots that extend the full width of the orebody and hence across the stratigraphic profi le. Based on geological information contained in block-outs and in consultation with Geology, the Grade Control team allocates material to each primary stockpile, potentially from every stratigraphic domane in the orebody. This ensures primary stockpiles are designed with maximum practical homogeneity and consistency.Using only primary movement, the allocated ore is stockpiled in a layer-cake fashion. The ore is pimple dumped across the width of the stockpile footprint and on completion of a layer, it is dozed flat with an access ramp that allows dumping to commence on the next lift. The primary stockpiles are reclaimed normal to build direction and the magnetite is crushed, all in, to a concentrator feed stockpile.The ore is sampled at the crusher from a falling stream cut. These assay data, are used for benchmarking and control charting the grade and variability of concentrator feed stockpiles. The concentrator feed stockpiles have demonstrated a statistically signifi cant reduction of within pile variation, between pile variation and pile to pile variation, primarily attributable to the development of ore blending. The concentrator has seen sustained, improved performance as a direct result, which translates into lower concentrate cost per tonne and improved yield and quality.

This paper has been written collaboratively by members of the International Mining VR Group. It is the first of a series of papers. Mining in the 21st century is a high technology industry that strives to reduce risk and improve safety through the use of improved processes and procedures. This risk reduction process is aligned with the innovative use of technologies often developed for other industries. Computer-based visualisation systems and their content are such innovative technologies, in particular the use of virtual environment systems and mixed reality. A primary objective of developing virtual environment systems and the mixed reality content displayed in them for the mining industry is to allow mine workers and operators to practice mine processes and demonstrate competency in tasks that will be encountered in day-to-day mining operations at mine sites. It is anticipated that providing easy access to virtual environment systems will facilitate the avoidance of high-risk situations through improved knowledge, skills, understanding and decision making. Via virtual environment systems mine workers will also be able to practice infrequent or emergency events and maintain preparedness for such events. Day-to-day mining practices can also be evaluated. The rapid pace of technology innovation and the decreasing cost of simulation hardware and software present a plethora of technology to the uninitiated. This can be confusing. In this paper taxonomy is presented that classifies hardware, what it can display and also content that can be included or displayed on the various computer-based visualisation systems. The taxonomy provides insight into where technology can and may be implemented in the future as virtual environments are a dynamic and evolving technology. The taxonomy should also assist in the decision making process when scoping or selecting technology for a particular purpose.

Technological advances in sensor and material handling technology has enabled a step change in mine operations performance. Sensors capable of monitoring the grade of broken rock mass can be mounted on shovels, truck loading units or conveyors allowing highly precise ore/waste decisions to be made on small parcels of rock, increasing selectivity. This increased selectivity has the potential to remove sub-economic material from the product stream prior to incurring ore treatment costs. Bulk ore sorting is capable of intervening at <10t “pods” on Run Of Mine conveyors, or alternatively at per bucket loading (5-100t) or truck scale (30-350t) parcels of ore. This Grade Engineering technique being developed by CRCORE (Rutter, 2017) can improve mill feed grade, remove deleterious materials and ensure that the high capital intensity ore treatment facility is presented with the best ore feed strategy. While this technology can improve mine economics, estimating the performance of a bulk ore sorting system is challenging. Traditional resource estimation practices such as Ordinary Kriging and Inverse distance weighting (IDW) are based on weighted averages, a process that smooths the grade profile, reducing modelled variance and dispersion. Its purpose is to generate a globally unbiased result but is less suited to generating a model of adequate granularity to enable confidence in local grade heterogeneity. This is an essential component for bulk ore sorting success. Estimating ore sorting performance requires knowledge of the grade-tonnage curve at the scale of the sensor diversion unit (SDU). Evaluation based on an estimator that smooths the SDU distribution will not correctly predict ore/waste separation or economic performance. Alternatives to traditional linear geostatistics have been tested on a variety of mineralisation styles. Additionally, a number of heterogeneity metrics have been developed to assist with evaluation and assessment. The difference between estimation for grade (metal) and modelling for traditional mining block models, versus methods used for predicting heterogeneity and variability are explored.

"The feasibility of Dugald River mine was highly sensitive to mining and geotechnical design assumptions, particularly stope dilution and strike length. Following the start of initial mine development in 2012 the project was suspended in 2013 due to concerns over the complex ground conditions and resulting dilution, stope sizes and general mineability. A technical risk mitigation program was undertaken with a key aim to increase the level of confidence in predicting stope dilution.A stope sizing and dilution model was developed that provided a range of stope sizes based on geotechnical conditions and acceptable dilution. The original feasibility used a standard stope size of 25 m height by 25 m span. The new model was used as the foundation for the subsequent updated development plan for Dugald River that reduced much of the previous technical risk through greater confidence in the geotechnical and mining parameters.Several methods to predict stope hanging wall dilution and appropriate stope size have been used at Dugald River that relied on the modified stability graph method. Improvements to the method were identified as more rock mass and mining data became available through the completion of a trial stoping program, increased underground development and a large geotechnical core logging campaign. These improvements not only focused on the technical aspects of the model, but also on creating an easy to use and sustainable process that could be used at multiple stages of mine planning from life-of-mine (LOM) through to final stope design.Several of the main improvements are: understanding stope failure mechanisms and collecting only geological information that is most relevant detailed modelling restricted to the rock mass that could be expected to influence stope behaviour accounting for different stope failure mechanisms with the stability chart method assigning a geotechnical confidence factor to the data making it useful as a mine planning tool with integration into the mine planning process using performance of completed stopes to update and calibrate the model.The model provides recommended hydraulic radius and associated dilution estimates across the ore body. Providing the hydraulic radius allows planning engineers the option to consider single, double and triple lift stoping options suitable to mine scheduling. While the model has been calibrated for conditions at Dugald River the process used to create the model is not site specific and is applicable to other steeply dipping tabular orebodies.CITATION:Hassell, R, de Vries, R, Player, J and Carswell, J F, 2017. The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper&apos; being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

The Hauraki goldfield is located east of Auckland in the North Island of New Zealand. It includes Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and the Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges as far south as the town of Te Aroha and south east to Te Puke. It has a total north-south extent of about 180 km and an area of 3000 km2. The goldfield is the most productive in New Zealand, and while production at present is negligible, the area has undergone continuous exploration over the last seven years.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO) Nova Operation (Nova) is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA). Discovered by Sirius Resources NL (Sirius) in 2012 and acquired by IGO in 2015, the Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger) occurs within the Fraser Zone of the AlbanyFraser Orogen. Nova-Bollinger is a complex nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) magmatic intrusive sulfide deposit, which is characterised by high-grade folded and undulating breccia lodes that host the bulk of the payable metals. Significant sulfide mineralisation is also found in several magmatic intrusive styles including net-textured, disseminated and blebby styles. A smaller but material volume of sulfides has also been remobilised into the deposit’s footwall rocks as ‘stringer’ bands in metasediments, or as discrete massive sulfide lenses. When interpolating Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) block grades in the presence of locally varying grade connectivity trends, such as folds or undulations, the sample search neighbourhood, which is used to identify the composites subset that is used for each block estimate, should be oriented to match the local trends. In theory, the most robust method of estimation where locally varying angles (LVAs) are applied to search neighbourhoods, are techniques where the composites and the blocks to be estimated are transformed to an unfolded coordinate system (UCS). However, UCS methods can be tedious to implement and require subjective decisions to be made that cannot always be fully defended. An alternative LVA method commonly used in the industry is dynamic anisotropy (DA), which is much simpler to implement and is often assumed (but not that often demonstrated) to result in similar results to UCS-style estimation. In 2018, Nova’s Mine Geology team (MGT) estimated the grades and density of the Nova-Bollinger MRE using the UCS approach. For the 2020 MRE update, Nova’s MGT tested and compared the USC grade interpolation method with the DA approach. As applied to the Nova-Bollinger’s 2020 MRE, the comparison, advantages and disadvantages of the two estimation methods are the subject of this paper

The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed.
