New and existing gravity and aeromagnetic data are used to determine the structure of the Waihi region and to investigate any relationship between structure, hydrothermal alteration and epithermal mineralisation. The 24 mGal, 10 km diameter, negative Bouguer gravity anomaly which occurs south of Waihi has been modelled as a I.5 km deep asymmetrical basin. This basin, the Waihi Depression, is interpreted to be infilled with low-density volcanic rocks of the Uretara Formation and Whitianga Group, overlying older andesites of the Waipupu Formation. To the north and west, the margins of the depression are defined by the Waihi and Mangakino Faults, which have been modelled with dips of 45 - 60¦ to the south and west respectively. The southern and eastern boundaries of the Waihi Depression are defined by smooth, shallow dipping (15 - 20¦) boundaries. The Waihi Depression is interpreted as a fault-angle depression, resulting from southeast extension in the early Pliocene. The Waihi Fault is modelled as an approximately E-W feature, located to the south of Waihi. Small 2 - 4 mGal positive Bouguer gravity anomalies occur north and west of the margins of the depression, and correlate with known areas of hydrothermal alteration and areas of low magnetic gradient.

Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a research tool that involves numerically solving the equations of motion of large numbers of particles. It can be very useful for investigating mechanisms that can lead to bias when extracting samples from material as it is carried on a conveyor belt or as it falls from the end of a conveyor belt. DEM is more realistic than conceptual models and mathematical models; but it is not as realistic as physical experimentation. Its primary advantages over physical experimentation are that it is cheaper and that it allows many factors to be varied while keeping other factors unchanged.This paper reviews our investigations of the performance of sampling systems by using DEM. The sampling systems investigated include falling-stream cutters, cross-belt cutters, Vezins and a device called a ætrue-beltÆ cutter, which is being developed. The Sunrise deposit is one of AustraliaÆs largest and most profitable gold deposits. It has consistently and spectacularly outperformed every resource model created. Currently over the life of the Sunrise pit there has been a 50 per cent under estimation of ounces mined. Without a solid basis for predicting the tonnes and grade or the spatial location of mineralisation, mine planning becomes problematic. Recently, through a better understanding of the mineralising processes the reconciliation of the resource model has improved to be in the order of ten per cent under on ounces mined. This paper will describe how the mine geologists at Placer Granny Smith have implemented the changes required to improve the resource model. Work began with the development of a three-dimensional lithological and structural model based on historical drilling and pit mapping. Continual updating of the geological model with grade control logging, assays and in pit face mapping, now allows for the on-going improvement of the resource model and the planning of mine development drilling.

When the HSE Act was introduced in New Zealand in April 1993, one of the prime aims of the Government was to signal to the industry. The Government's recognition of the employer as the key person responsible for safety and health in the workplace and to actively encourage employers to self manage the health and safety function. Because of the significant change in the philosophy behind the new legislation, and because of the inherently conservative nature of the mining industry, it has taken some years for both the industry and the regulators to reach the stage of considering the framework in which a controlled degree of self management can proceed.   In this paper, some of the issues relating to the legitimacy of the process are considered, some of the questions raised in the minds of those charged with implementing the legislation are discussed, and the views of some eminent authors are examined.   The latter part of the paper focuses on a programme called the Reduced Site Surveillance Programme, which grew out of Goal 2 of the New Zealand Mining Inspection Group's 5-Year Strategic Plan. The programme is described in some detail, and the criteria applied at each stage of the programme is discussed. The paper concludes with the author's expectations of the longer term outcomes of the programme.

This paper describes the mining setting for the sub-level open stoping (SLOS) mining method used at Olympic Dam (OD), and investigates the range of stope performance conditions encountered over 30 years of production, using a qualitative description of the factors influencing performance. Utilising a continuous improvement tool, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) process, and a forward-looking rock mechanics program, the intent is to identify the key factors driving productivity and performance to create a stable and achievable long term mine plan.

Boliden Tara Mines Ltd, located in County Meath Ireland, produce in excess of 2.5 million tonnes per annum of ore from the underground resource located 40 miles north west of Dublin. The zinc-lead ore is mined using long hole open stoping techniques, with ore treated on site. The operation is continually searching for new ways to improve productivities at the mine, and have employed a detailed data acquisition and reporting system on site to provide feedback around performance. One area where both Boliden Tara Mines Ltd and Orica Mining Services believed improvements could be made was in the application of bulk emulsion technology through an Orica supplied but Tara operated Maxipump Delivery System for all production and development blasting at the mine. Both parties committed to the evaluation of this technology at the mine, however the capital cost and technical and economic changes meant the project needed to be diligently investigated and any improvements documented. The first stage of this project was for Orica Mining Services personnel to visit the operation, and conduct a detailed analysis of the operationÆs performance over the past 12 months. The next step in moving forward was then to commission and utilise the customer operated emulsion system at the mine. This was then followed with the collation and analysis of data from the demonstration period to examine and document the benefits of the system. This paper is a summary of the observations made during the site inspection and the data analysed to date, and has been used in determining operational and financial improvements in the comparison between a Maxipump Emulsion Service and the current ANFO loading systems.

Lime and cement manufacturing has a proud history in Otago, with the earliest lime kilns appearing around 1849 at Caversham and Kaikorai in Dunedin . At Dunback or Makareao (to be precise) three well-type kilns were built by the government in 1899. In 1909 these kilns were leased to the then Milburn Lime and Cement Company. They erected a large brick Schmatolla kiln in 1909, elliptical in plan and fired by coal gas. The kiln operated up until 1944 before being left derelict. The quarry which supplied the kiln also supplied the Burnside Cement works from 1929 up until its closure in 1988. The quarry was shifted to the top of the hill in the 1950s.

A Sun SPARCstation based computer network is utilised to store and process mining data at the Macraes Gold Mine. Techbase and Medsystem software running on the SunOS unix platform is used to generate all data plans, sections and other design data required on a daily basis to run the mining operation. The Macraes site is regarded as a fully integrated site where all geological, grade control, exploration, orebody modelling, resource estimation, pit optimisation and mine design is undertaken on site by MacraesÆ professional staff. The methodologies employed are regarded as æstate-of-the-artÆ where computerisation allows the rapid and efficient evaluation of large quantities of mining data by a handful of professional personnel. Ore reserves are estimated using an indicator kriging method and roving cone pit optimisation, a complex process that would not have been achievable in pre-computing days.

There has been a reduction of coal production in the United States due to environmental pressure and the increased use of natural gas. Minnovare identified the potential to improve production drilling outcomes in underground long-hole stopes through the adaptation of new technology which was under ongoing development. An approach to Evolution Mining resulted in the companies agreeing to a collaborative agreement to further develop the technology for use on underground long-hole drilling equipment. During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing setup/alignment process was compared to the new technology system with the following observations: • Using the existing process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/ 300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. • The new technology was proven to limit rig setup/alignment error, reducing average blasthole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: • Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. • This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). • With the system implemented as standard practice following results of the FY18 trial and continued success, overall dilution for full year FY19 showed continued reduction to 12% Evolution has continued use of the new technology at Cracow, where the improved accuracy has allowed the extraction of narrower stopes where drilling accuracy is critical. Evolution has also deployed the technology at the Mungari operation and has stipulated that the contractor use the technology at the Mt Carlton operation, which is currently under development. Future implementation of the Development Optimiser system should be verified by commencing additional trials to include a larger data base for validating the initial trial results.

The intrinsic value of iron ore depends on its physical and chemical characteristics. For example, silica and alumina are unwanted elements, downgrading iron grade and adversely affecting high temperature processing, attracting penalties in smelter contracts. For this reason, an informed knowledge of processing characteristics and product quality of the ore is valuable and cost effective during mine planning and processing.Ore variability is a significant factor that affects metallurgical behaviour and efficiency of ore processing equipment. Ore of sufficient chemical and physical quality needs to be modelled, mined, processed and usually blended. Feed and product assays are commonly used to assess potential ore upgradability. However, assays alone cannot be all informative of actual processing response given the variability of the physical properties of the ore.This study investigates the potential benefit of implementing a geometallurgical approach during the commissioning stage of the Kings deposit, part of the Solomon Iron Ore project in Western Australia. Kings drill hole database information, ie geological, textural and geochemical data, together with the results of metallurgical test work were used for geometallurgical analysis and modelling. Three main ore types were identified at Kings, namely channel iron deposit (CID), bedded iron deposits (BID) and Detrital Iron Deposit (DID). Additional classifications were utilised to better characterise these units in terms of their physical properties.Bulk sampling for each ore type was carried out across the deposit for metallurgical testing. Multivariate statistical models were developed for prediction of product quality for each geometallurgical unit. A new approach for modelling yield based on ore upgrade factors is introduced. There are still vast areas of Australia in which either the hydrocarbon potential has already been indicated but from which no hydrocarbons have been produced or else are completely untested. Despite the lack of recent new oil discoveries, it is anticipated that initial gas discoveries in these areas will be followed by oil discoveries as has happened historically. General exploration activities are continually providing new information that is being input to update previous hydrocarbon assessments for Australia, and all indications are that future exploration efforts will discover a lot of gas, some small oil pools and there is a chance to prove a major new oil province. Because of this, it is anticipated that reserves growth will continue at the average historical rate of about 200 MMB/year until the year 2000. The most frequent scenario will be costly exploration resulting in small oil discoveries and high development costs. This, in the past, has resulted in low profitability for Australian oil exploration, but windfalls for the Australian government.

Strategy development by the minerals industry identified the fragmented management of mineral resources as a significant impediment to the discovery and development of New Zealand Æs mineral resources. The total gross value of New Zealand Æs potential resources of coal and minerals is estimated at about $400 billion, but their potential value is not being realised. The management of minerals is now largely under the control of 86 local authorities (regional and district councils) and the lack of recognition of the significance of the sector has lead to inconsistencies in the way minerals are managed. The industry strategy influenced science funding for minerals, with the result that the 'mineral wealth' component now includes research on making better use of resource data in minerals management. Initially this research has targeted Otago and Northland regions where a number of initiatives are now in progress.   In Otago the Regional Council has budgeted to contribute $1 million towards a regional geophysical survey to advance mineral exploration and the management of subsurface resources in the region, to work cooperatively towards improving public awareness of the significance of minerals to regional economic activity, and to better coordinate policy-making for minerals at regional and district levels.   Crown Minerals, and the Far North and Whangarei district councils are considering providing funding support for an economic study of the mineral potential of Northland, building on a mineral resource assessment undertaken by GNS Science. Enterprise Northland is adding minerals to their list of potential growth sectors, and is supporting the operation of a Northland region minerals focus group.   Regional development agencies and local authorities have shown that they are willing to include mineral resources in their development strategies and to provide for them in policies and plans when supplied with information and assisted with technical support.

The Macraes Gold Mine has implemented a Zero Accident Programme and this paper reviews some of the factors responsible for the implementation.

Analcime-bearing rocks are one of the varieties of raw zeolite material, although the characteristics of analcime are not as good as other kinds of zeolites such as clinoptilolite or mordenite. However, some fields of application of analcime-bearing rock have been found, eg a method of water purification has been developed and patented. Analcime-bearing rocks are rather widespread in the Timan region of the Komi Republic of the Russian Federation. They are represented by Upper Permian siltstones and mudstones. The analcime-bearing rocks have the following mineral composition (per cent): clay minerals (50 - 70 per cent), quartz (ten to 30 per cent), analcime (one to 30 per cent), feldspars (two to ten per cent), carbonates (two to five per cent) and pyroclastic material. Analcime aggregates encrust cavities and infill microfissures in rock. Both microcrystalline (crystals <0.01 mm in size) and medium-crystalline (~0.5 mm) aggregates are observed. The mechanical, gravitational, magnetic, sorption and ion-exchange properties of analcime-bearing rocks have been studied. They are characterised by a high index of grindability and a low index of abradability and crush resistance, low values of the benzol-based pore volume and toluene-based specific surface area, and a medium porosity value. The magnesium based ion-exchange capacity (IEC) ranges from 28.7 to 196 mg+equiv/100 g. Analcime-bearing rocks of the Timan region are characterised by low beneficiation potential. Preliminary ultrasonic treatment of the analcime- bearing rocks is efficient for the destruction of intergrowths along their boundaries and production of free analcime aggregates. The proposed beneficiation procedure yields 95 per cent analcime concentrate. In the Komi Republic, analcime-bearing rocks are utilised in agriculture. They are also used for domestic needs (eg as biotoilets for domestic animals) and the solution of ecological problems (regeneration of soil polluted by oil). We have completed experiments on the purification of potable and industrial water using analcime-bearing rock subjected to thermal treatment. The experiments demonstrated that it was possible to decrease water colouration by 20 per cent, turbidity by 79 per cent, permanganate oxidation by 30 per cent and total iron content by 70 per cent.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. The purpose of this paper is to look at the costs of tailings disposal, and in particular the comparative costs of different disposal methods in different situations. Costs are often the hidden design parameter. We know that they are important but sometimes feel that it is not very respectable to talk about them in public. It is better from a public relations point of view for it to appear that the decision-making process is driven by environmental factors or best practice rather than looking for the cheapest option. But this presumes that the two are mutually exclusive and this need not be so. These issues are discussed later in the paper. It is also commonplace for the scale of the mining operation to change with time, typically involving increased throughput rates and total tonnage. New ideas in tailings disposal make their appearance. The regulatory attitude can change. Having made a decision about the disposal method at the time of original feasibility study and design it is easy to suppose that the mine is æstuck with itÆ. But that also need not necessarily be so. Careful costing of options may reveal that a switch in method could be cheaper in the long run. The designer will often tend to think in terms of initial earthworks and site development costs. Aspects of power consumption, labour, and periodic campaigns to move tailings pipelines and carry out embankment raises are either overlooked or not given the same emphasis. This can distort the evaluation process. It is productive to think in terms of dollars or cents per tonne as a basis of comparison, not just the total sums. Tailings disposal can cost from as little as 10 - 20 ó/t to over $1.00/t which is a big range. There may be good and unavoidable reasons for the high figure but there would need to be to justify being so far over the industry average. At the same time, mining and processing costs, at least for gold, are around $15 - 20/t. Viewed from this perspective tailings disposal will always be a relatively small component of the annual budget.

"The precise formulation of a geometallurgical optimisation problem is by necessity a simplification of reality. It includes implicit choices such as data availability or mining block geometry. Additional data can be orebody data, production data or market data. Often these choices are predetermined by the software, the workflow or the corporate culture, and as such are not even queried. There are several aspects that might play a role in the optimisation. They include not only the spatial model on which the selection of mining blocks and the potential mining sequence are based, but also the complexity of the processing model, the way in which uncertainty is treated, the scope of responsibility and the complexity of the model. In addition the timing of the optimisation and the availability (or lack thereof) of information will influence the outcome of any optimisation.We show that different modelling choices and different model formulations for the same mine can lead to very different processing choices, substantially different net present values (NPV), opposite investment decisions and so to overall different values for the entire operation. The selection of adequate simplifications and corresponding formulations for the optimisation problem is thus an important task in itself.For this purpose we introduce a method for quantifying the impact of certain simplifications prior to the optimisation. For example, the effect of mining block choices depends mainly on the spatial structure and the structure of the processing gain function. Both can be quantified beforehand. Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.
