In the past three years, the company has been involved in six 8? coring projects in a variety of geographies and geologies, including iron ore, coal and uranium. FORACO has developed proprietary equipment and techniques to deliver cost-effective LDC samples with outstanding core recovery.The FORACO LDC sampling system is hands free, with mechanised rod and corebarrel handing to minimise the risk of manual handling injuries. Sample volumes are six times PQ (the common industry standard for large core samples), with core recoveries consistently above 96 per cent in extremely difficult formations.Eight inch coring is a conventional coring system suited to hole depths up to 150 m. The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. Economic conditions after WorId War II made the recovery of Australian sources of sulphur one of considerable national importance. From 1947 to 1949 an investigation was made of recirculation techniques to produce acid plant grade gas from the Dwight-Lloyd down-draught sintering plant.During 1949 it appeared feasible to produce a gas of suitable 802 concentration and a decision was made to construct a gas purification train and a 150 tons/day contact acid plant. However, a number of difficulties remained in the production of the gases for sulphuric acid manufacture and as a result of research conducted to overcome these troubles the continuous up-draught sintering process was developed.The principal difficulties were:(a:) The down-draught sintering practice, as developed, produced an unusually high metallic lead precipitation in the windboxes. "A continuous improvement initiative was identified at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mine’s (KCGM) Fimiston open pit with the goal of reducing bench turnover time and increasing shovel digability by improving fragmentation around previously mined-out stopes. In the past, a higher number of blasts than normal would be required to get through a single excavation area where stopes were present. This is due to the limited reach capability of the drilling fleet from safe ground into restricted areas requiring the drilling of the shot to be done in a staged manner. In addition, the holes that were able to be drilled in the area did not remain open long enough to be loaded with explosives as a result of the poor ground conditions surrounding the stopes.Over the last 18 months, KCGM has trialled drill additives to improve blasthole stability, as well as introducing a remote drill rig allowing holes to be drilled in areas previously inaccessible by manned drill rigs. This has resulted in improved penetration rates in bad ground conditions, improved drill hole stability, better shovel digability, and an overall reduction in bench turnover of at least ten days on the benchmarked 126 days average per bench. The production at First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kevitsa Mine, located in northern Finland, commenced during the second quarter of 2012. Presently, the mine processes approximately five and half million tonnes of ore annually, producing nickel, copper and platinum group metal (PGM) concentrates. In order to support fast production ramp-up and optimise the performance of flotation thereafter, an extensive advanced flotation control solution was implemented by Outotec in collaboration with FQM Kevitsa.In addition to basic process instrumentation and process control, each of the 14 Outotec 300 m3 and another 26 cells, ranging from 20–160 m3, have been equipped with state-of-the-art systems providing froth image analysis and automatic froth speed control. Also, the flotation cell levels are stabilised with advanced feed-forward level control.The online analyser provides key feedback information of the process performance for the advanced process control (APC) system. Based on this information, APC system defines grades and recoveries according to rules defined by Kevitsa process metallurgists. This system executes the control strategies for optimising the production of concentrates.Throughout the implementation and support phases, specific and intensive attention was paid to ensure plant personnel gained full understanding of interacting with the system and how to incorporate their process experience and skills to optimise the APC strategy. This level of expertise is also a valuable asset in understanding the APC system’s contribution to the overall performance of the plant as well as providing the ability and confidence to define key performance indicators used for continuous assessment. This study of the tin-tungsten ore of the Shepherd and Murphy Mine, in central northern Tasmania, was originally undertaken at the request of the Moina Tungsten-Tin Mining Co., N.L., as part of the research programme of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of the C.S.I.R.O. It is based on the examination of a suite of specimens supplied by the management, supplemented by a more extensive collection and observations made by the author during a short visit to the mine in October, 1956.The Shepherd and Murphy Mine is at Moina, 36 miles S.W. of Devonport and 22 miles from Sheffield, the nearest railway station. It was worked almost· continuously from 1893 to 1919, when a fire destroyed the mill; to that date it had produced concentrates to the value of £141,000. After a long period of idleness, the mine was re-opened by the present company, but it has been announced recently that unfavourable market conditions have again forced closure.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe mine is on a deeply dissected plateau, about 2,500 ft. above sea level; it lies between the Iris and the Forth Rivers, whose valleys are deep gorges cut to about 400 to 600 ft. above sea level. From Moina westwards to the Iris River, a limestone regarded as part of the Gordon River Group, of Ordovician age, conformably overlies a sandstone containing tubicolar casts which are circular in cross section, half an inch in diameter and up to two feet long, and which resemble marine worm burrows (Elliston, 1953).

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. "In the civil tunnelling field, the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has now overtaken the use of conventional excavation methods (drill and blast / roadheader). This is due to a number of reasons, including the increasing availability and reliability of TBMs, the ability to deal with a wider range of face conditions, and the reduced excavation cost that TBMs can bring.Mining companies have spearheaded the advances in shaft boring by mechanised means, both in blind and raise boring. However, mining companies have been slower to adopt mechanised tunnelling.When contrasted with a conventional mining contract, there are good reasons why TBMs in mining applications are relatively rare. A conventional decline contract may have very little geotechnical information. The decline alignment can be subject to change as the tunnelling progresses. The infrastructure requirements are less for a conventional decline, and the sunk cost prior to excavation commencing is lower. Contract documents can be very simple.The history of TBM use in mining is reviewed and lessons are described. From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.We believe that despite the additional requirements for TBM declines, the cost and time advantage to mining companies is very attractive. The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine. Reconciliation is a powerful tool used by mining operations to compare the mass and grade of ore produced with what was estimated before mining. The primary objective of reconciliation is to verify that the estimated planned metal production is achieved during processing, allowing issues to be identified for which adjustments can be made throughout the mining value chain to improve recovery and maximise efficiency. Traditionally, the mine plan is based on estimated mine grades using sampled exploration drill hole or blasthole grades. Reconciliation discrepancies between the mine plan and mill are common due to such factors as insufficient or non-representative sampling, poorly conceived models, or unrecognised blast movement. MineSense Technologies Limited® (MTL) has developed an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensor-based ore classification system that is installed on mining equipment to provide real-time grade estimates of run-of-mine material at bucket, truck, or belt-scale. Bucket level grade estimates provide insights into grade variations at the mine face that were never before available. This data set eliminates some of the leading causes of reconciliation discrepancies and enables tracking of tonnages and grades from the mine face to the processing plant at bucket resolution with confidence. Bucket-by-bucket grades at the mine face enable dynamic optimisation of the mine plan to stabilise the mill feed grade through blending of mine and stockpile loads. Beyond stabilising feed grade, Mine to Mill reconciliation combined with the full XRF spectrum response can generate proxy relationships to ore characteristics like hardness and recovery. These properties can then be predicted at the mine face, enabling further optimisation of the downstream mill feed, not only for grade, but also for power and water consumption, reagent addition, and recovery. This paper reviews the changes in the coal industry over the past 30 years and attempts to predict the trends over the next ten years. The last 30 years have seen a steady concentration of production into fewer, larger mines, which operate on 3: more continuous basis, and a major increase in productivity per employee. Coal exports have increased from zero to almost half the country's total production. As well as major changes in exploration and mining equipment and the increasing use of computer tools, the industry now operates in a relatively new regulatory and commercial environment.   Safety legislation now requires the writing and enforcement of policies and procedures by the mining companies, rather than adherence to inflexible regulations enforced by an Inspector. Accident rates have decreased dramatically. The transition from coal mining licences to permits, requiring landowner consent and resource consents, is well under way. Environmental controls are now an essential aspect of the industry.   Equipment suppliers now offer maintenance services, production guarantees and flexible financing.  Contract miners offer mine design and restoration as part of the contract. In a similar approach, Solid Energy now offer an ash disposal service and assistance with resource consents to their customers as well as investment in technology to ensure a consistent product to demanding specifications. Solid Energy has proposals for energy centres which install and operate the coal burning appliances and simply sell energy to the customers. The next 10 years should see an intensification of these trends of bigger mines, more exports and greater technology and a 'package' approach to customer service.

The diverse priorities, drivers and concerns of multiple stakeholders in the minerals industry complicate the integration of sustainable development considerations into mine design, as well as operational and strategic decisions. The ability of the industry to address all role-playersÆ needs, or indeed, to achieve consensus among all role players on the plethora of sustainable development issues seems a noble yet unattainable goal. One of the difficulties in assessing the relative importance of sustainable development issues across many stakeholders is the inevitable lack of impartiality in valuing these issues. Starting from a premise that transparency and fairness of the process are absolute prerequisites for progress, but that consensus is not, an approach has been developed in which all stakeholders are asked to assess the importance of all other stakeholdersÆ priorities, excluding their own. The approach recognises that stakeholders have different levels of contribution, understanding, vested interests, and perceptions of legitimacy and entitlement, across the diversity of sustainable development issues and decision criteria. Using Triangular Value Analysis, the relative weightings of each of the stakeholderÆs priorities are determined through a regression-like technique. The uniqueness of this approach is the manner in which self-assessment bias and overemphasis of stakeholdersÆ own priorities are avoided. The methodology can be used for both internal and external stakeholders, and in conjunction with other group decision making techniques, such as the nominal group or Delphi techniques. This paper will illustrate how Triangular Value Analysis may be applied in the minerals industry to determine priorities in various decisions relating to potentially conflicting sustainable development priorities within the industry.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

Some form of technical library is a necessity for every metallurgical plant, but its form and scope will vary with the conditions of each case. In its simplest form, it may consist of one or two mining journals and a few text books distributed amongst the staff. Again, it may be a separate establishment controlled by a clerk, the technical staff necessarily making its own research into the literature available. A still more elaborate organisation may be established both to supply information when requested and to keep the operating staff in touch with current matters of interest, and the library service of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia is of this character.The necessity for such a service is due to several facts. The Company's interests are scattered over three States. Most of its staff members are remote from: good public library facilities and they have few opportunities for exchanging ideas verbally with other metallurgists and engineers. Then, too, the process of recovering zinc by electrolysis, is a young art of which the physical and chemical bases were far from fully known at the time the: Risdon plant was established. Most of the zinc produced is sold abroad, and this unsheltered industry can afford to miss no technical or economic development which may promote its efficiency. Add to these facts the geographical isolation of the Commonwealth and the case for an adequate library is complete.

Lihir Gold Mine is situated in a dormant volcanic caldera on a small island off PNG. Not æextinctÆ but dormant. Current ground temperatures are up to 150 degrees Celsius with active geysers in the workings of the mine, pools of boiling ground water adjacent to low-grade dumps and hydrogen sulphide gas emissions. It is a unique mining environment by world standards. This paper will deal with the following issues encountered and managed by the operation:blasting in hot and reactive ground; management of sulphide gas emissions; disposal at sea of all mining waste rock; one dear to all Australian minerÆs hearts û dealing with landowner groups; and unusual human resource issues.

The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

Occupational exposure limits for diesel particular matter (DPM) are progressively being adopted in a number of countries. Many of these follow the lead of the US Mine Safety and Health Administration initiated in 2008. In line with adoption of best practice it is accepted that all exposures should be reduced to as low as reasonably achievable. The management of diesel emissions and occupational exposures to those emissions requires an integrated strategy incorporating efforts from all key departments on a mine, including management, production, maintenance, supply and occupational health and safety.Australian coalmine longwall moves rely on the use of high-powered diesel equipment such as chariots and other machines that produce exhaust pollutants of gases and DPM. To reduce mine personnel’s exposure levels to DPM a hierarchy of controls can be followed. Minimising the use of diesel equipment, better operator positioning in relation to exposure source, using efficient engineering methods and adopting better ventilation to reduce concentrations through dilution are some of the controls that can eliminate exposures. Approaches generally adopted in Australian longwall mines currently rely on a combination of strategies such as optimisation of ventilation, use of diesel particulate filters and use of diesel tag boards that minimise the number of vehicles through recording entry and exit into working panels.A study has been undertaken into the mine ventilation systems currently in use during longwall moves within Australian modern longwall extraction mines. This paper reviews current longwall section ventilation systems and discusses evolving changes being adopted to address the more complex problems in dealing with section DPM during phases of the operational moves. The effects of DPM on crew members as well as the diesel equipment operators within a longwall section are examined. The operations and project environments are very different, but overlap in many areas. The development of mineral processing projects is goal oriented, is schedule focused and is a contractual environment. The operating environment for a mineral processing plant is oriented around longer-term commitments, focused on delivery against budget expectations, and an environment heavily influenced by long-term personal relationships, community relationships, and people issues.Further contrast is evident in the way expenditure is managed. Projects commit large amounts of money quickly to meet schedule-based objectives. Operations manage expenditure to minimise operating costs and are able to, or are forced to delay decisions on large expenditures. However, these two environments need to come together in many ways, ranging from greenfields plant handover to a new operations and maintenance crew, to day to day interaction and management of brownfields projects, often in close proximity.This paper considers the different perspectives people bring to projects and early operations, including the advantages and disadvantages of æoperationsÆ input to a project and models for managing value adding during project development, implementation and debottlenecking.CITATION:Lane, G and Clements, B, 2012.
