Porphyry-related skarns are common around thePacific Rim. Examples include Cadia and Goonumbla (Australia) Ok Tedi (PNG) and Ertsberg and Grasberg (Indonesia). Although usually treated as separate to the adjacent porphyry copper-gold (Cu-Au) deposit, skarns near porphyry deposits are commonly inextricably part of the larger Cu-Au system(s). Using Cadia as the primary example, we demonstrate that large, zoned, calc-silicate skarns necessitate very large porphyry systems. The Big Cadia and Little Cadia Fe-Cu-Au skarns are associated with the Late Ordovician to Early Silurian high-K calc-alkaline to shoshonitic Cadia Intrusive Complex (CIC). Together, these skarns total ~40 Mt of Cu-Au ore but are much smaller than the adjacent Cadia EastûFar East, Cadia Hill, and Ridgeway porphyry-related Cu-Au deposits. Historically these skarns were large, economically significant and highly controversial deposits. Porphyry-related skarns typically have well-developed calc-silicate and ore zonation. At Cadia, classic skarn zonation has been mapped between Cadia Quarry (proximal) and Big Cadia (distal). Over this 800 minterval, mineralogy trends from: proximal garnet > pyroxene, grading to; fe-oxide-rich skarn; and distal haematite-epidote-rich skarn. At Little Cadia, analogous but symmetrical alteration zonation is present. Big Cadia formed from fluids that migrated laterally within calcareous units and were sourced from strongly altered quartz monzonite phases of the CIC at Cadia Quarry. Isotope studies and mass-balance calculations suggest that prograde and retrograde skarn alteration was caused by magmatic dominated fluids. They also indicate that the mapped alteration system at Cadia Quarry is insufficient to account for the total volume of Fe present at Big Cadia. Despite the typically oxidised nature of many porphyry systems, not all skarns in the porphyry environment are oxidised. Assimilation of carbonaceous sediment by hydrous, alkaline intrusions could lead to reduced Au skarns rather than porphyry deposits. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. In mineral asset valuation the use of any valuation method requires the input of competent and independent technical professionals. A resource valuation must be as transparent as possible to allow others to assess the validity of their underlying assumptions. Materiality is a dominant factor in all valuations and a valuer should set out the basis for the subjective decisions made in this regard. Any valuation methodology must comply with the requirements of the law, practice notes and guidelines issued by the various relevant authorities and professional bodies. The valuation methodology chosen to value a mineral asset depends upon the amount of data available on that asset and the reliance that can be placed upon those data. Mineral assets generally fall into one of three broad categories, depending upon their state of development, ie whether they are at the exploration, development or operating stage. Naturally there are transition phases. Hence, there are ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects; Pre-Development Projects and Developing Mines; and Operating Mines. The features of each of these mineral asset status categories are described, mainly in terms of the confidence in the contained identified Resources/ Reserves. The various subjective methodologies available for the valuation of ""Grass Roots"" Exploration Areas and Advanced Exploration Prospects -are specifically reviewed. The pitfalls in adopting a ""recipe"" approach are noted. It is the author's view that the Expected Value Method (based on the probability adjustment of the output of a Discounted Cash Flow/ Net Present Value model) has little application in the valuation of exploration mineral assets, so it is only briefly addressed. The methodologies reviewed are listed below. ò Multiple of Exploration Expenditure Method (expenditure based). ò Joint Venture Terms Method (expenditure based). ò Geoscience Rating Methods (eg Kilburn - area based). ò Comparable Market Value Method (real estate based). ò Rules of Thumb (eg $/Resource or production unit; % of in situ value). Mr. Gillie and Mr. Harris have given us a wealth of information and food for thought on the vital subject of information and food fo rthought on the vital subject of reducing costs and mention considerable saving in some of the larger items. There are a number of points on which I would like further information, but I will confine my remarks to a relatively small saving which is of particular interest in view of another paper to be presented this afternoon.Mention is made of a 50 per cent reduction in the amount of zinc used in the precipitation of gold slime from the pregnant solution. Would Mr. Harris enlarge on the methods by which they obtained this reduction; and could he give an actual figure of zinc consumption either by ton of ore treated or per ounce of bullion recovered.AuthorsWe consider the reduction of zinc is due to improved clarification of the pregnant solutions. The sand clarifiers used prior to the installation of the 50 ft. -thickener were not satisfactory due mainly to the blending of the hessian and matting under the sand. Under these conditions the leaf clarifiers were fed with overflow solution from the clarifiers and were overloaded in consequence. The addition of Calgon has also been beneficial.The present consumption of zinc per ton of solution treated is 088 lb. per ton.A. L. Mining companies around the world devote considerable effort to production reconciliation and metallurgical accounting. However, although sampling, weighing and analysis methods used to obtain the raw data for metal balancing continue to improve, they are still areas that are sadly neglected. Using the latest metallurgical accounting package to improve metal balancing is fundamentally flawed if the data used are unreliable in the first place. The basic rule for correct sampling is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. If this rule is not respected, sampling bias can easily be introduced. Unlike precision, which can be improved by replication, bias cannot be reduced once it is present. Sampling and sample processing procedures must therefore be carefully designed both to minimise bias and to obtain acceptable precision. The most suitable sampling location is the discharge point of a process stream, where increments can be obtained by taking a complete cross-section of the stream with a sample cutter. Sampling devices that take only part of the stream may introduce serious bias and must be avoided. The moisture content and wet mass of the material being sampled are of similar importance to chemical analyses for determining metal content. The accurate determination of moisture content is particularly difficult, because the moisture content of samples can change after the sample is taken, eg due to moisture evaporation. Hence, moisture samples need to be taken quickly and placed in sealed bags or containers that are impervious to moisture. The moisture content should then be determined without delay. To determine wet mass, a range of weighing methods are used in industry, including weighbins, weighbridges, conveyor weightometers and platform scales. The precision and accuracy of these methods vary considerably, so it is important to select a method with the appropriate precision and ensure that the weighscale is well maintained and regularly calibrated.

Petroleum exploration in the Australian arid zone has been proceeding at an ever-increasing pace, subject to financial fluctuations, since the 1960's. The impacts of petroleum exploration in the arid zone are less than they would be for corresponding operations in. e.g. a forest area: in this context, Australia is fortunate in that its major petroleum producing (and prospective) , basins are offshore or in the arid zone. In addition. the other major sources of impact in the Austrlian arid zone, namely pastoralism, tourism, and rabbits, tend to be concentrated around areas of particular conservation significance, whereas petroleum exploration is not. Despite this, the cumulative impacts of exploration are sufficient to have caused concern to government regulatory authorities and some sectors of the general public. Exploration is now subject to a range of environmental constraints with various degrees of legal enforceability. To enable exploration to continue without public opposition, the industry, and government agencies charged with regulating or supervising it, must demonstrate that the net benefits of exploration exceed net costs, including environmental costs. One particularly simple and cost-effective technique for increasing the net benefit/cost ratio of exploration is to reduce the net environmental costs by minimising and mitigating the impacts, both primary and secondary, of seismic acqisition. This is best achieved by a combination of preventive and restorative techniques: careful line positioning and low-impact (or zero) line clearance, coupled with simple rehabilitation of bladed lines. Line clearance without bulldozer blading - e.g. by rolling or simply pegging and trafficking, perhaps with tracked rather than rubber-tyred vibroseis - is one promising approach currently coming into use. Rehabilitation by grading soil banks ("windrows") back on to bladed tracks, though not yet in widespread use, has proved very successful in the limited areas where it has been applied to date.

The Tamagawa Hot Spring, from which Ra-Pb-Sr-bearing barite precipitates, is a representative hot spring in a volcanic gas-bearing hydrothermal system associated with Quaternary andesitic to dacitic magmatic activity beneath the Yakeyama Volcano. Thermal water in the Tamagawa Hot Spring is divided into three types: Cl-SO4-type (Ohbuki hot spring: pH 1.2); SO4-type (pH 1.8 to 2.9); and neutral-type (pH 6.1). The concentrations of dissolved components in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water are about ten times higher than in the SO4-type thermal water. The 87Sr/86Sr isotopic signatures of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal waters (0.703992 ¦ 0.000004 to 0.704032 ¦ 0.000006) are different from those of SO4-type thermal waters (0.704245 ¦ 0.000003) formed by the interaction of andesitic volcanic rocks (0.704065 ¦ 0.000007 to 0.704093 ¦ 0.000009) and groundwater derived from river water (0.704314 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.704519 ¦ 0.000013) in a shallower part of the hot spring area. The possible origins of Sr in the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water and in the SO4-type thermal water are different. The Sr isotopic ratios (0.704130 ¦ 0.000012 to 0.707556 ¦ 0.000014) of Aniai Formation andPreYakeyama Lake deposits occurring below the hot spring area are distinctly higher than those of the Cl-SO4-type thermal water. However, it is expected that a solidifying andesitic or dacitic magma which has similar Sr isotopic ratios of the Ohbuki Cl-SO4-type thermal water, occur in the deep portion of the Tamagawa Hot Spring. The Cl-SO4-type thermal waters having low Sr isotopic ratios do not acquire their Sr isotopic signatures by interaction with strata below the hot spring area, but they are likely to reflect water interaction with a solidifying magma with low Sr isotopic ratios. Components including rare metals in Cl-SO4 type thermal water could be transported from a deeper part. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

Artificial ground support has developed into a refined science over the past 20 years. From reactive support systems such as timber props and steel supports, to active systems such as roof bolts and cable anchors, ground support technology has now developed efficient systems that work well in many instances. However this paper demonstrates that there is still a long way to go to develop optimum ground support systems. Some conventional rock bolts and cable anchors emphasise their tensile capacity only, without considering other factors such as their shear strength or shear modulus, or if the support member can transfer all of its support capacity to the surrounding rock. Examples are given of the use of ground anchors with high tensile and shear capacity in underground coal mining as well as examples of slope failures in open pits where the cable bolts have remained intact because they have been unable to transfer their full capacity to the surrounding weak rock mass. For underground coal mines, speed of installation is also of primary concern, but it must also have high tensile and shear capacity both in terms of strength and stiffness. Ground support systems of the future must therefore address these problems. An innovative new rock bolt is discussed which goes some way towards solving these problems. This new rock bolt is screwed into the rock and thus has a direct mechanical interlock with the rock. Initial field results show that it has an extremely high anchor capacity and can be fully installed in approximately 30 seconds. It has considerable capacity to improve the productivity of the coal mining industry.

The great advances made in the application of solvent extraction to the recovery of copper from low grade ore sources over the past 15 to 20 years are well known. Solvent extraction is an essential step in the recovery and purification of copper from dilute sulphate leach solutions by which some one million tonnes of copper are now electrowon annually. A reagent is also available for the selective recovery of copper from chloride leach solutions and this may hold the key to the processing of complex sulphide ore concentrates. By comparison, the use of solvent extraction in the recovery and processing of zinc has as yet found little favour and is confined to only a few specific and comparatively small applications. This is despite the ready availability of a large number of low grade zinc sources and zinc-bearing wastes and residues. It is suggested that this difference is due in large part to the absence of suitable reagents having the particular features required to enable them to fit into a solvent extraction - electrowinning based process for zinc. Ideally, for the recovery of zinc from dilute sulphate solution, an extractant should operate on a proton exchange principle and be strong for zinc in the same way that o-hydroxyaryloxime reagents are strong towards copper. It should load efficiently with zinc at the pH of typical sulphate feed streams without the need for neutralisation and yet be stripped efficiently by spent zinc electrolyte. Another factor of major importance for many applications, however, is that it should be highly selective for zinc over ferric iron. These features have now been realised in a development extractant DS5846, which is a formulation of a novel class of reagent currently under investigation by Zeneca Specialties. The properties of this reagent are described with respect to selectivity, isotherms and how they compare with phosphoric and thiophosphoric acids that have been previously proposed for the extraction of zinc. For the recovery of zinc from concentrated chloride solutions a solvating or neutral donor type of extractant is required which again should ideally have high selectivity for zinc over a number of other metals, particularly iron. The new reagent Acorga ZNX50 is based on a formulation of a novel class of compound developed specifically for this purpose. It gives efficient extraction of zinc from feed solutions that are four to six molar in chloride ion but is readily stripped at 60 - 65¦C using either water, dilute brine, or spent zinc chloride electrolyte. The reagent is highly selective for zinc over iron and a range of other metals including cadmium, arsenic, lead and magnesium.

Synthesis of GLORIA side-scan sonar and other geophysical data has provided morpholo- gical and tectonic details of the interaction between the Nazca and South American plates along the Peru Trench (80S-15¦S). Our analyses suggest that a new propagating rift of the Galapagos type is evolving along the Mendana Fracture Zone (MFZ). Subduction induced rift- ing of the Nazca plate is accompanied by organized seafloor spreading for the last 3 Ma at least. GLORIA sonographs and bathymetric mapping show an 8-10¦ divergence in MFZ width towards the Peru Trench. The fracture zone comprises numerous ridges and troughs and a lack of sediment cover in the axial part. Young magnetic lineations (anomalies 1-2A) are observed within the fracture zone wni.cn are orthogonal to the older Nazca plate lineations. The central anomaly narrows west- ward and can be observed up to 400 km seaward of the trench whereas anomaly 2A is terminated about 200 km from the trench axis. Recent SeaMARC II sonar mapping in the region shows large igneous blocks in the Trench axis to the north of MFZ but absent to the south. We believe these blocks represent young seafloor of MFZ rift/spreading center broken off from the ridges as they subduct along the Peru Trench. The MFZ rift is propagating west- ward at a rate of 115 km/Ma (25 km/Ma relative to the South American plate). Given the present rates of accretion at the East Pacific Rise and of propagation along MFZ rift, the Nazca plate will be divided into two parts in about 35 Ma.

THE exceptional rainfall characteristic of the West Coast of Tasmania, in conjunction with the rugged topography of the district, has always suggested the utilization of water-power, and from the earliest days of the Mount Lyell Company theeventual installation of a hydro-electric power scheme, making use of some near-lying lake, has constantly been kept in view. At the period of the inception of the company, however, the time was not ripe for such an undertaking, and it is only oflate that the various important considerations involved have sanctioned incun;ing the heavy expenditure necessary, with the positive assurance of permanently reaping the benefits expected. The West Coast of Tasmania contains many lakes of varioussites; situated at high levels, and, although the catchments of these lakes are not very extensive, still, the excessive rainfall is so constant over long periods that its regularity may be relied on as offsetting the limited catchments. The explanation of the abnormal rainfall is simply the circumstance that the West Coast Range forms the first high land barrier which is met by the moisture-laden westerly and north-westerly winds blowing off the Southern Ocean. By the time the clouds strike the mountains they ride very low, consequently the elevation of the range, the peaks of which do not exceed 3000 to 4000 ft. above the sea, is sufficient to cause a copious precipitation. Lake Margaret, which is situated five miles north of the reduction works, was first recognized as a possible source of waterpower by Mr. Hugh Ohrisp, a surveyor, who visited it about 1893-4. The products from beneficiation present themselves at opposite ends of the spectrum, and yet numerous synergies exist in the preparation of coking coal and hematite iron ore products for their common export markets. Returning to the coal side of the business with Anglo Coal following a five-year sojourn in WA with Hamersley Iron, has provided the opportunity for comparing and contrasting some of the key synergies of the supply chains of both bulk commodities.Comparisons include consideration of things like: resource evaluation (especially quality aspects), run-of-mine handling and preparation, beneficiation, product handling and transportation, quality assurance and customer awareness, value-in-use and impacts on iron and steelmaking, and supply chain environmental aspects.Inherent within these are several other notable contrasts including: æseamsÆ and æorebodiesÆ, rocks and minerals, rejects and tailings, oxidation and weathering, suppliers and users, and marketing and purchasing, to name but a few.This paper covers some of the more interesting of these synergies and raises some potential opportunities for sharing knowledge and innovation between the two areas of activity in the future.

Heavy mineral sand deposits are a source for the economically important element titanium, which is contained in minerals such as ilmenite and rutile. In heavy mineral deposits ilmenite displays various degrees of alteration. Natural weathering of ilmenite involves the removal of Fe and thus results in an increase in the Ti-content. Minerals such as pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite, anatase and the ill-defined mineral aggregate leucoxene, which consists mainly of various amounts of remnant ilmenite, pseudorutile, ferropseudobrookite and anatase, are typical replacement products of ilmenite. Ferropseudobrookite occurs as a recrystallised, optically and chemically distinct mineral phase. Textural relationships suggest a diversity of physicochemical conditions including weathering and metamorphism that led to the formation of complex mineral assemblages and textures. In the heavy minerals industry the alteration products of ilmenite are generally referred to as æaltered ilmeniteÆ and/or leucoxene. The distinction between æaltered ilmeniteÆ and leucoxene is not consequently defined and is very much dependent on economic factors and specific mining operations (ie determined by deposit specific mineral assemblages). Generally the term leucoxene is used in the heavy minerals industry as a collective description for ilmenite alteration products with TiO2-components ranging from 65 - 95 per cent. A detailed comparative mineralogical investigation including microscopic, SEM and QEMSCAN« techniques show that it is possible to identify and quantify the replacement products of ilmenite on a micron scale. QEMSCAN« generated particle maps were graphically compared with photomicrographs taken by applying reflective light microscopy. The resulting information can be integrated over the entire sample with respect to composition, absolute and relative mineral abundances, grain sizes, volumes, densities, textural relationships and liberation potentials. This provides a powerful tool for a first appraisal of the physicochemical behaviour of bulk samples and individual particles during metallurgical processing.

Prediction of rock cuttability by various excavation machines such as tunnel boring machines, road headers, rippers, picks, roller disc cutters, excavators, etc is of major concern to both civil and mining engineers and rock mechanics. In principle, the design of a rock cutting tool is based on achieving maximum excavation with minimum input energy, minimum applied force, minimum equipment weight and volume and, more importantly, minimum tool wear. When a rock material is indented by the force of a cutting tool and then unloaded several material zones form underneath and around the tool. As the tool moves into the rock the volume of its associated rock cavity (ie volume of displaced rock) expands and depending on the indenter's shape various phenomena may occur. Immediately beneath the tool a small zone in which the stress state is more or less hydrostatic, is formed which is underlain by an inelastic, or damaged, material zone. Both size and shape of this damaged zone control the magnitude of the indentation force and the chip formation mechanism during unloading. The rock is unable to store the whole strain energy induced by the tool and consequently the extra energy is expended either in forming new fracture surfaces and/or in plastic deformation in the damaged zone. Therefore, it is not surprising to see that both perfect-elastic and rigid-plastic constitutive models are not generally suitable for modelling indentation of rocks. In contrast elastoplastic constitutive models are more appropriate as they can include both elastic and plastic deformations (Kral et al, 1993). Elastic solutions for several half-space indentation problems can be found in most text books on elasticity and in particular in Timoshenko and Goodier (1951), Sneddon, (1951), Poulos and Davis (1974) and Johnson (1985a). If a failure criterion, eg the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, is applied to delimit elastic solutions for indentation problems, a lower bound limit of the applied indentation force (for a given indentation depth) can be estimated. It may be noted that elastic analyses, without any delimiting failure criteria, normally overestimate the indentation force. Plastic solutions for a few indentation problems may be found in Hill (1950), Johnson, (1985a) and Alehossein et al (1992). When analysing the behaviour of indented rocks the choice of an appropriate constitutive model describing effectively the behaviour of the rock at various stages and phases during indentation is a challenging issue. Several questions need to be answered before starting an effective analysis. The first question is of course: Which one of these is more appropriate for modelling zones underneath and around a cutter, elasticity or plasticity theory, continuum damage mechanics or fracture mechanics, and what is the bridging link between these various theories? Which mode is more dominant in fracturing rock, tensile or shear mode? What governs the mechanism of chip formation? What is the function, shape and the behaviour of the pulverised zone that forms just underneath a cutter? Is the hydrostatic stress state assumption reasonable for this zone? How does the rock change during the absorption and dissipation of the input energy and how does the indentation energy vary with rock type and depth of penetration? How can we model the damaged zone under the indenter? Furthermore does a plastic material form beneath the pulverised zone? When and how do radial and ring cracks form around and under an indenter?

Independent assessments of existing and projected mining operations are often required in the exchange of assets and for raising capital, requirements which are particularly prevalent where there are new mining fields, a characteristic of the Pacific Rim area. Such audits and appraisals typically consist of a geological evaluation of the ore deposits; estimates of mineral inventories and mineable reserves; assessment of mine plans and costs; assessment of ore processing methods, recoveries, and costs; assessment of infrastructure and G&A (general and administrative) requirements and costs; assessment of environmental, permitting and reclamation requirements and costs; and, finally, economic evaluation based on various discount rates and metal prices. Audits provide a challenging task for consulting engineering companies, but one well worth the effort for mine developers and those connected with financing of the mining industry.

The Izok massive sulphide deposits are located in the Northwest Territories of the remote western Canadian Arctic. Together they represent one of the highest grade undeveloped zinc-copper resources in North America. Metall Mining Corporation is presently engaged in a feasibility study on developing the Izok property as well as actively exploring for additional reserves. The Izok deposits are Archean-aged, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) bodies hosted within and near the top of a thick sequence of predominantly felsic pyroclastic rocks. The hangingwall package includes additional felsic volcanoclastics, dacitic and basaltic flows, thin sulphide-rich iron formations, and turbiditic sediments. The felsic volcanics are intruded by syn- to late-hydrothermal dacitic dykes and sills and post-hydrothermal gabbroic dykes and sills. Both intrusives are interpreted to be volcanic feeders to overlying flows. All lithologies are cut by much later irregular granitic pegmatite dykes and regionally metamorphosed to pyroxene homfels grade. The deposits occur within a large kilometre-scale soda-depleted alteration zone. The immediate footwall and hangingwall rocks to the deposits are characterised by zones of muscovite-biotite (with or without sillimanite), lesser chlorite-biotite-cordierite (with or without anthophyllite), and locally intense silicificified and albitised zones. All lithologies have been affected by a later calcic metasomatic alteration. As currently defined, the Izok Zn-Cu-Pb-Ag deposits comprise a cluster of four complexly-zoned composite lenses: the Northwest, North, Central, and newly discovered Inukshuk deposits. The first three deposits are amenable to open pit mining while development of the Inukshuk deposit will require underground methods. The combined mineral inventory of the Northwest, North, Central and Inukshuk deposits at present totals 15.6 million tonnes with a grade of 2.4 per cent Cu, 13.8 per cent Zn, 1.4 per cent Pb, and 74.6 g/t Ag.

The Institute of Mineral Processing at Aachen University of Technology has been engaged in fine and ultrafine comminution for several years. Former investigations had been dealing with the mechanical activation with the aim of increasing the solubility of highly resistant oxides such as tantalite and niobite while research on the product of ultrafine powders is of major importance at the moment. Materials of that kind are of increasing interest in the production of extremely resistant ceramics, in the development of new raw materials, in powder metallurgy and in the production of fillers (extender pigments) and pigments. The creation of ultrafine powders is difficult and very expensive. They can be produced by means of condensation or dispersion methods. One important method of dispersion is mechanical comminution. Due to long and intensive research and development all over the world important advances have been achieved but still a great number of questions and problems occur especially in producing materials of submicron and nanometer grain sizes which could be answered or solved only insufficiently up to now. These mentioned difficulties refer especially to: ò the required energy input into the feed material, ò the forming of strong agglomerates and wall stickings, ò the required product qualities, and ò the entire and reliable characterisation of the products. Basic investigation aim to clarify the micro and macro processes of ultrafine grinding and work towards solutions to the difficulties mentioned above. The aim of the Institute's research is the development of a new grinding device for producing ultrafine powders. First results of a laboratory scale mill of that type will be presented in this paper.

Solid EnergyÆs project evaluation process utilises a standard staged gate approach, with five levels leading ultimately to project execution (level 6). For a project to progress through each level, specific financial criteria need to be satisfied. Solid Energy primarily use value based (discounted cash flow) metrics to support investment decisions. Within this approach Solid Energy utilise a number risk-based techniques to quantify project uncertainty. This includes the use of risk-based probabilistic analysis using Monte Carlo simulation and probability-based scenario analysis. Figure 1 shows the net present value (NPV) cumulative probability. Project risks are identified through comprehensive risk workshops. The output of these workshops (list of key risks, ranges of uncertainty and probability of occurrence), is quantified within the financial models. Incorporating this risk information on a probabilistic basis allows an investment decision to be made with a robust knowledge of the range of possible project outcomes along with the likelihood (probability) of those outcomes occurring, for example 80 per cent confidence that the project value will be greater than NZ$10 M, 50 per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$50 M and ten per cent confident it will be greater than NZ$70 M. Incorporating risk implicitly into the financial analysis allows the business to easily evaluate/measure projects with different risk profiles. The detailed risk analysis does away with the complexity of arbitrary risk-based hurdle (discount) rates, as projects can be evaluated based on their specific risk characteristics. Whether a project will progress to the next level of investment and ultimately into implementation depends firstly on the value assessment in comparison with the associated risk/uncertainty, and secondly matching this with the businesses appetite for risk. At Solid Energy standard criteria are used for specific project evaluations, but in addition projects are considered on a portfolio or strategic basis also. Solid Energy attempts to maintain a mix of low risk (low value) projects with some high risk (high value) opportunities. The mix of projects must remain in line with the shareholdersÆ risk appetite. One of the keys to a successful investment decision is ensuring that the appropriate information is available to decision-makers so that they may proceed with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and impacts associated with the decision.

The Ida Valley in Central Otago is one of series of parallel basins filled with freshwater sediments. The basins are in fact tectonic depressions superimposed on NE trending grabenlike structures which occur in the area and are the result of block faulting possibly initiated in Cretaceous times and concluded in late Tertiary and early Quaternary. In Central Otago this tectonic event affected metamorphosed rocks belonging to the eastern facies of the New Zealand Geosyncline and collectively known as the Haast Schist Group. These rocks constitute the basement and the shoulders of the tectonic depressions. The Ida Valley occupies the depression wedged in between the Raggedy Range to the NW and the North Rough Ridge in the SE. The valley is approximately 38 km long, 3 to 7.5 km wide and is drained by the NE flowing Pool Burn, which meets the SW flowing Ida Burn. The resulting unified stream flows into the Manuherikia river which drains the next door depression to the NW. The present work deals with the Ida Valley basin and more specifically with the geology studied within two Prospecting Licence areas held by Gold Mines of NZ Ltd on the southeastern flank of the valley.

The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team.
