In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

In line with mining operations throughout Australia, Western Mining Corporation Limiter' is striving to increase productivity by intro-ducing mechanized mining techniques wherever possible. Kambalda Nickel Operations' (K.N.O.) largest operating nickel mine, Long Shaft, is currently introducing mechanized cut and fill methods which must provide flexibility to cater for an orebody that variesconsiderably in width, both along the strike and up dip.This has resulted in modifications to the previous approach to primary level develop-ment, and intermediate stope development, and in the type of development and production equipment being employed. Electric-hydraulic diesel jumbos and diesel loaders have now been mated with conventional rail equipment and production airtrack machines are being utilized.The transition to mechanized methods is in its preliminary phase and is being monitored closely to ensure any productivity gains are not offset by a substantial drop in mine grade. The precise method ofmechanized mining has not been finalized and selective methods will be used, according to the ore width and ground conditions, which vary throughout the mine.

Phu Bia Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Pan Australian Resources Ltd owns and operates the Phu Kham copper concentrator located in the Xaysomboun District, Lao PeopleÆs Democratic Republic. Construction and commissioning of the 12 Mt/a copper concentrator and associated facilities was undertaken by Ausenco Ltd and handed over to Phu Bia Mining Ltd in April, 2008. The first copper concentrate was produced in April 2008 and the ship carrying the first shipment of copper concentrate set sail 27 July 2008. Nameplate mill throughput was reached in August, 2008 when 1 020 000 dmt of ore was treated in the milling and flotation circuit. The Cu-Au mineralisation is contained in skarn and stockwork mineralisation and is interpreted as a distal expression of a conventional porphyry copper-gold system. Copper mineralisation is principally in the form of chalcopyrite with lesser bornite. Gold occurs as small grains, typically associated with copper minerals. In the upper portions of the orebody, oxidation and water table movements have resulted in near surface leaching of the copper and below the leached zone, supergene enrichment resulted in chalcocite mineralisation. The circuit operates with a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) û ball mill circuit, feeding a bank of OK200 rougher cells. Rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill prior to entering a cleaner circuit consisting of three stages of cleaning and one stage of cleaner scavenging. The concentrate typically assaying 24 per cent Cu and 6 - 7 g/t Au is hauled for over 1000 km across the border to the Port of Sriracha in Thailand, and stocked in sheds at the wharf from which it is shipped to various Asian smelters. This paper discusses the successful commissioning and ramp up to design tonnage and metallurgical performance. In addition, a program to optimise both the comminution and flotation circuit is detailed with reference to grinding efficiency, flotation residence time and size by size mineral recovery.

MOUNT STEWART is situated half a mile south of Leadville railway station, which is distant 240 miles by rail from Sydney via Mudgee. It forms a low ridge from which rock waste and alluvium slope gradually to the black-soil flats of the Coolaburragundy River. The Mt. Stewart mine comprises:(a) The Mt. Stewart workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(b) The Grosvenor workings in M.Ls. 44 and 45, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.(c) The Extended workings in M.L. 44, parish Talbragar, Co. Bligh.The workings contain 1375 ft.. of vertical shafts, 1105 ft. of underlay shafts, 800 ft. of rises and winzes, 8520 ft. of drives and crosscuts, and 18,000 ft. of stapes.The mine was first opened in 1888 as a silver-lead mine, and a waterjacketed furnace was erected during 18B2. The furnace was installed with two internally-fired tubular boilers of 35 h.p. and 25 h.p. respectively, and two Baker's rotary pressure blowers. The results of the smelting campaign indicate that, during 14 months, a total of 15,000 tons of ore were treated, yielding silver and lead. The electrolytic recovery of metals from solution requires an understanding of the characteristics of the particular system employed, and the current efficiency and morphology of the deposit are influenced by such factors as cell design, metal ion and supporting ion concentration, acid concentration, temperature, impurity levels and cell design. The electrolytic deposition of both cadmium and silver present individual difficulties, and special cell designs are used for each of these metals. It was found that cadmium deposition was plate-like at lower cadmium concentrations, and at higher current densities. The presence of zinc in the electrolyte promoted nodular growth. Current efficiency remained high even at 50C in contrast to published information. Silver deposition morphology was relatively unaffected by changes in silver concentration, pH and current density. Current efficiency was reduced as temperature was increased.

Lake Kopiago is located some 71km northwest of Tari in the Southern Highlands Province and lies on the northern edge of the Papuan Fold Belt. The area is underlain by middle Miocene carbonate and fine grained clastic sediments intruded by late Miocene hornblende gabbros.Two mineral deposits occur to the south of Lake Kopiago. These are the Bisamu gold prospect and the Wunaki zinc-lead gossan.The Bisamu deposit consists of a calcic skarn assemblage which is geochemically anomalous in gold, silver, copper, zinc, cobalt, bismuth and tellurium. The prograde mineral assemblage includes garnet, clino-pyroxene and epidote whereas the retrograde assemblage includes epidote, quartz, actinolite and chlorite. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulphide with minor pyrite and marcasite and trace chalcopyrite and sphalerite. Minor magnetite is also present. The Bisamu skarn shows many of the features typical of gold-skarn type mineral-isation.

In recent years rapid advances have been made in the technology used for hydrology and erosion modelling of rural catchments. These advances have been driven by the growing availability of digital terrain maps that can be used to automatically define catchment properties that previously had to be manually extracted from contour maps. In addition, these models have, in principle at least, more powerful predictive capability. The author is involved in a number of projects to migrate and further develop these models for application to mine rehabilitation assessment. Current technologies for hydrology and erosion assessment (eg CREAMS, ANSWERS) are reviewed, underlying principles highlighted and deficiencies in the context of mine rehabilitation design assessment addressed. The advantages and disadvantages of the new digital terrain map tools (eg WEPP, SIBERIA) are discussed. Current work integrating these new models with existing rehabilitation design tools (eg ACIRL's ARGUS computer package) highlights the advantages of an integrated approach using digital terrain maps; cheaper, faster, lower impact and more flexible rehabilitation design. The use of novel visualisation tools to aid the design process is discussed. The paper is illustrated by applications to mine sites in Queensland and the Northern Territory.

The rapid and successful development by Western Mining Corporation Limited (WMC) of a gold mining industry based on the deposits of the Kambalda-St Ives group, was the final chapter in a story that started some 85 years earlier. Although the exploration work that led to the development of the current mining operation took place in the 1970s and 1980s, the successes had their roots in the 1890s and it took three gold rushes, and separate uranium and nickel exploration booms to make the discoveries Possible.

Future mineral processing developments will be of two types. There will be a continuation of the advances of the last 20 years including major increases in equipment capacities, the development of reliable on-line instrumenta- tion, the use of digital computers for automatic control, and the greatly expanded use of in-situ leaching techniques. However, there will also be a need for innovations as the industry faces a different set of problems to those involved in cost and extraction efficiency considerations. These new problems include those relating to energy usage, environmental pressures, and the further development of large low grade deposits and small, high grade metallurgic- ally complex deposits. Present technology does not appear adequate to solve many of these new demands. New treat- ment concepts will be required, and the immediate outlook in this regard is not encouraging. A major research and development task in mineral processing over the next 20 years will be to seek out new ideas and develop them, and this must be pursued with imagination and determination. Both the continuation of the present research pro- grammes and the development of new methods will require a steady supply of highly qualified technical personnel. These people are not being produced in the numbers required, and this situation must be urgently rectified.

The geological and economic aspects of the known deposits of uranium in southern Africa are described. Processes influencing uranium mineralisation in the relevant geological environments are elaborated upon in order to define fundamental characteristics of mineralisation in the sub-continent and identify potential areas for the location of new deposits. Several areas, namely the Damara orogenic belt and its extension in Zambia and Zaire, the Bushveld zone, and the terrains of uranium fertilisation from the mantle have a high probability of hosting uranium deposits which are yet to be discovered. Uranium resources of the southern African region have been estimated and production forecasted to the year 2000. This geographic region contains one quarter of WOCA's resources in the Reasonably Assured Resources and Estimated Additional Resources - Category I exploitable at less than 130/kg U. On this resource base, it has the potential to maintain its position as the leading exporter of uranium in the world with a production of 13 350 t U308 by the end of the century. Zambia and Zaire are expected to join South Africa and Namibia as uranium producers in the next decade, with their combined share of projected production being in the order of 10%.

The results of a systematic geochemical survey of rare elements are applied to elucidate genetic relations in a suite of rocks and to predict the probability of mineralization. The geology, radioactivity, major element geochemistry and classification of the main intrusives are described. The distribution of a group of rare elements, their concentration trends and the bearing these have on the emplacement sequence of the rocks are considered in some detail. The guides for exploration in the Pilanesberg that emerge are listed and some areas which substantiate predictions are described briefly. It is concluded that a study of rare element trends can make a considerable contribution as an exploration tool and for clarifying relations between the members of rock suites.

Studies of the minor element content of sphalerite and pyrite have generally been concerned with individual deposits or localised groups of deposits. However, a small number of more regional investigations have been reported (e.g. Davidson, 1962; Groves and Loftus-Hills, 1968; Loftus-Hills and Solomon, 1967; Price, 1972; Bralia et al., 1979) which have used the minor element abundances to evaluate the petrogenesis and geological affinities of diverse ore types and to fingerprint metallogenic provinces (e.g. Ivanov, 1964). While generally held to be valid, some doubts have nevertheless been cast on the reliability of minor element abundances in petrogenetic deliberations (e.g. Mercer, This paper reports on the distribution of he. Cpl and Mn in sphalerite, and Co, Ni and Mn in pyrite, from sulphide mineral occurrences within the "eugeosynclinal" prism comprising the New England Region of north-eastern New South Wales and south- eastern Queensland (Fig. 1). The occurrences examined are representative of two well-defined styles of mineralisation (Stanton et al., 1974) within which clear patterns of ore-rock distribution give rise to specific metal associations (Herbert. 1977).

Delay scatter, although widely recognised, has rarely been studied with the aim of critically reviewing blast designs. With current trends towards increased deck charging, and the effect on the number of separate delays in blast designs, delay scatter is shown to have a rather profound influence on the control of initiation sequence and the ability to successfully con- duct pre-splitting and smooth blasting. Determination of realistic delay scatter distributions is the first step towards application to blast design. Delay scatter must be evaluated in terms of deviation from the nominal time, not in terms of deviation from the batch mean, since the latter is not usually known without specific testing, requiring accurate timing instrumentation. Computer programs using Monte Carlo simulation can then be developed to investigate the probabilities of out-of-sequence initi- ation or near-simultaneous initiation within any specified interval. The procedures have been applied to both production and development blast designs in Australia and Chile to improve initiation sequence control and to rationalise and simplify blast designs.

Looking back 25 years, the role of the drill and blast engineer in an Australian mine seemed relatively simple, with the primary focal points being scheduling of the drill rigs, oversize control, and budget control with respect to consumption of both explosives and drill consumables. The choice of explosive selection was relatively simple, though many mines were becoming involved in trials of slurry explosives, emulsion blends, and low density ANFO blends. Guidelines to assist the engineer towards specific fragmentation targets were scarce, environmental constraints were light, and computers were rarely found on the desks of any mining engineers. Wall control blasting was in its infancy, with the bulk of attention being given to appropriate slope design and little real attention given to factors such as explosive distribution, and optimum delay timing and sequencing. Quantitative measurement of blasting performance was rare. The science of blasting, for fragmentation control, wall control, and environmental impact control was about to be born, and was heralded in those years by intense efforts by the explosive manufacturers and a proliferation of research centres throughout the world. Since the early 1980s, the role of the Australian drill and blast engineer has gone through a major metamorphosis, and currently requires a greater depth of scientific understanding than any other specialisation within mining engineering.

Mine design procedures will be revolu- tionised by technological developments in computers, software, database construction and management, and numerical modelling programs. Developments in geotechnical databases will be required which utilize geological and geomechanical tests to supply appropriate input for numerical models. Techniques utilizing sedimentological and structural modelling are described. The capacity of current numerical models in mine design is outlined and a program for developing a fully integrated mine design package proposed.

In the first five years of longwall mining at Pacific Colliery, special techniques of goaf sealing, gas drainage, goaf edge ventilation and goaf sampling were developed and used to o crcome the concurrent problems of spontaneous combustion and high methane emissions. The English-inspired back-return face ventilation system was modified to suit Australian mining methods and was first used as part of a 'Y' ventilation system and more recently was used with a 'U' system of ventilation. In conjunction with this ventilation system, the maintenance of a sealed goaf area was an essential element in the control of the spontaneous combustion in the goaf.

This paper gives a description of the research undertaken by an explosives manufacturer to give better technical advice to the Mineral Industry. Blasting Physics is defined as giving a systematic and coherent account of the initiation and subsequent effects of high explosives upon the surrounding medium. As a result of this work a mathematical model based on the gener- ally accepted mechanism of blasting has been developed. The mechanism and the resulting model are briefly outlined. IFrom'this model the effects of burden, spacing, blasthole diameter, rock and explosive properties upon fragmentation and heave can be calculated. Using these calculations it is then possible to see how variations in frag Imentation and heave can affect the overall production costs of a mine whether it is surface or underground. Permian ultramafic and associated rocks form a belt in East Nelson and contain widespread, but minor, chromite and copper mineralisation and some mining was carried out last century. Since mining ceased, about 1910, little mapping of the belt has been carried out although its origin has been debated vigorously. Recently it has been inferred to form part of a ophiolite sequence, which has been tectonically disrupted to form a melange, and several 'plate -tectonic' models have been proposed. Mapping in the central part of the belt has shown that mTlanges are to the east of the ophiolite sequence. Faulting is widespread so that in anyone section part of the sequence may be absent. Some of the faulting is difficult to recognise and probably took place during or soon after the sequence accumulated. Other faulting is clearly of Cenozoic age and includes major NNE striking faults, with large horizontal displacement, and approximately east-west striking faults with almost entirely vertical movement. The writer agrees that 'plate tectonics' could provide an acceptable explanation for the origin of the ophiolite sequence but the models so far proposed do not take into account the nature and field relationships of the rock units present. Copper Mineralisation is largely controlled by the younger faults, particularly those striking about north-east, and is largely confined to the western part of the ultramafic rocks particularly where slivers of the volcanics of the adjacent Lee River Group are enclosed. Mineralisation, along NNE striking shear zones, has recently been found in the volcanics some distance from the ultramafic rocks. The chromite mineralization is in the form of primary layering in the basal part of the ultramafic belt although in places it has been concentrated into lenses probably during serpentinisation.

When Matthew Flinders entered in his log `This land forms the South side of the large bight; and besides projecting beyond the coast line, and being a little higher than usual is remarkable for having some reddish cliffs in it, and deep water near the shore', he was commenting on the deposit of bauxite at a place now known as Weipa. This sighting took place on 9 November 1802, and probably represents the first direct entry in Australia acknowledging a potential mineral deposit. Flinders, of course, had no idea as to what he was looking at, nor did he land to determine its content. If he had, he probably would have had no idea of the substance, and even less knowledge of its use. Nothing further was done to this for about 150 years.
