As a number of underground fires have unfortunately happened in the Broken Hill mining district, the writer trusts that a paper dealing with such a subject may prove of interest. To simplify matters, the subject is classed under three mainheadings- I Origin of fires; II Methods of subduing them; III Precautions to minimize the risk of their occurrence.Underground fires may be started in three ways - arson, spontaneous combustion, or carelessness.With regard to the first-mentioned cause, direct evidence is usually lacking to prove that any fire has been caused maliciously; Though definite proof of spontaneous combustion having been the cause of a mine fire has not been brought forward, nevertheless it should be considered, especially in the case of sulphide ore bodies of a more or less friable nature. A geostatistical study is made of the drilling results available one stage prior to the present for a tabular deposit. A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

I In an optical microscope, mild attack by cyanide solutions on various minerals can be observed by means of colour changes as well as etching patterns. However, the mineral may not be identifiable due to the coloured film. In some cases, a transfer algorithm between mechanical stages enables the surface-altered mineral to be identified in the SEM. A re-evaluation of the Hampton Boulder prospect in the early eighties resulted in a decision to proceed with mine development in December 1985. A 500 000 tpa gold treatment plant was commissioned in December 1986. The treatment facility was expanded to 1 600 000 tpa in July 1988. A tailings treatment plant to improve recoveries from harder gold bearing sulphide ores was built in December 1990. The development of an underground mine in 1991 meant that a source of sand for backfill was required. A sands plant to fulfil this requirement was commissioned during November 1991.As of June 1992 a total of 7 710 487 tonnes of ore have been treated through the New Celebration gold plant. Total gold production from inception of the new mine until June 1992 is 545 470 ounces obtained at an average recovery of 90.1 per cent from an average gold head grade of 2.4 g/t. Self-potential anomalies are generated by fluid pressure gradient, by temperature gradient or by chemical gradient. On the basis of this principle, a new technique is proposed to locate the fire source of spontaneous combustion of coal by the self-potential method. In order to investigate whether this method can be applied to locate the spontaneous combustion of coal in practice, surveys of self-potential distributions were undertaken in a coal waste pile undergoing spontaneous combustion. The results showed that there is a negative centre of the electrical potential distribution in the measurement area. The potential in this centre is about 140 mV lower than that in the surrounding area. Moreover, the negative centre of electrical potential distribution almost overlaps with the high temperature zone. Therefore, it is concluded that it is possible to locate the heat source by the measurement of self-potential distribution.

During the course of an investigation into the fundamental chemistry of the cyanide process, it became evident that the usual method of determining protective alkalinity was not completely satisfactory. T.he routine method for the determination of protective alkali by first removing free cyanide by the addition of silver nitrate, followed by titration of alkali with dilute acid using. phenolphthalein as indicator, can be shown to give correct results only when the alkali is a strong base. For other sUbstances, the alkali so determined is not the protective alkali. In view of the complications associated with the presence of zinc in cyanide solutions the discussion will be restricted in the first place to solutions free from zinc. Until the chemistry of simple cyanide solutions is placed on a quantitative basis it will be difficult to elucidate the behaviour of complex mill solutions.By the use of physico-chemical theory, it is possible to treat certain aspects of 'the chemistry of cyanide solutions in a manner which not only illustrates the important variables involved, but which also shows the need for care in interpretIng results obtained by conventional methods.In the following, comparatively simple systems are discussed; the principles established should be of use in interpreting the behaviour of more complex solutions. The methods described are not intended for routine work, but may be regarded as supplementary to the usual analysis carried out for the control of plant solutions, or as alternatives to be used when the latter do not appear to be satisfactory.

Results of blasting trials conducted at Gregory Mine, a large open cut coal mine situated in the Bowen Basin, show that fragmentation was improved or equalled whilst reducing the amount of explosives previously required. This was achieved by a system of deck loading whereby two or more explosive charges, separated by air gaps, were positioned in the blast hole, thereby extending the effective explosive column whilst minimizing the total explosives required. In the three trials to date, a saving of approximately 213 kg of ANFO per blast hole was achieved. This represented an approximate 20% reduc- tion in ANFO requirements.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

A multi-wire borehole instrumentation system was used to monitor strata movement caused by a retreating longwall face at the Ellalong Colliery, situated in the Lower Hunter Valley in New South Wales, Mechanical anchors were placed at various horizons in the borehole which extended from the surface to the extracted coal seam. The vertical movement of the anchors was monitored during mining. The zone of major disturbance was confined to 13 times the extracted seam thickness above the seam. The average dilation of strata in this zone was 6 per cent. Above the caving zone, the tensile strain was under 2mn/m except at one location, where it was `xmi/m. The subsidence trough under dynamic conditions was flatter than that under stationary conditions. The subsidence also depended upon the extent of strata fragmentation prior to undermining.
