Production of refined zinc (99.95 per cent) at the minesite without increasing greenhouse gas emissions is considered. As an example, exploitation of the full reserve of the McArthur River orebody is proposed, using the existing concentrator, whilst introducing radically innovative smelting technology. Bulk flotation of all the sulphide minerals is followed by smelting in a melt circulation reactor with tonnage oxygen. By smelting the high-energy pyritic concentrate and reacting the evolved sulphur dioxide with near-mine dolomite, a large amount of electricity can be generated. This is enough to supply all the requirements for the smelter itself, an air separation plant and a facility for compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is disposed of off-shore for enhanced oil recovery or by other means. The reacted dolomite fixes sulphur as an inert and environmentally acceptable solid residue. Treatment by these means leads to virtually zero gas emission smelting. The paper concludes with a vision for the future in which expansion of zinc smelting capacity is seen to be definitely needed.

The excessively high cost of production in underground coal mines has made the survival of many coal mines around the globe economically non-viable. The global competitive coal market speaks itself of the desirability of a lower operating cost in conjunction with a higher productivity performance, particularly in underground coal mines, and calls for an optimal production planning under a host of constraints. Such a task of optimal planning is not an easy exercise like that of traditional planning based merely on intuition, experience and subjective judgement. It essentially demands a thorough understanding of the complex interaction of mine sub-systems for judicious application of optimisation tools and techniques available with operations research. A few large mines around the globe have made an effective use of a sizeable number of operations research packaged programs for optimal decision-making (Grayson, 1989). The success of practical applications of operations research techniques made in a variety of mining problems in large mines in different parts of the world will hopefully make inroads to smaller mines in years to come. The present paper is an addition in the series of such applications of operations research tools to mining problems, particularly with reference to an underground coal mine in India. The paper is based on research work (Jawed, 1990) and deals with the development and use of a mathematical model for production planning in underground coal mines under multiple objective environment subject to a host of constraints.

The Mineral Science Laboratory of the Government Chemical Laboratories has recently investigated various procedures for the analysis of the platinum group metals (PGMs). This investigation covered a number of methods for the extraction and preconcentration'of the PGMs from a wide range of geological materials. The nickel sulphide extraction technique proved to be overall the most applicable procedure. Flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), electrothermal atomisation atomic absorption spectroscopy (ETA-AAS), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) were examined for their suitability in analysing platinum group metals in solution. ETA-AAS and ICP-MS proved to be the instruments of choice due to their low detection limits.

Within a short time frame of just over two years Wirralie Gold Mine has been developed from a virgin geological discovery to an operating gold mine with a mine life of six years and a production rate of 50,000 oz per annum. Construction work on the 600,000 tpa single stage crushing, two stage milling CIP plant commenced in November 1987 and was completed some seven months later at an overall cost of $A25 million. Since commissioning in May 1988 the treatment plant has exceeded design tonnage, availability and recovery. A second expansion programme in January 1989 will increase plant capacity to one million tonnes per annum with associated bullion production of 80,000 ozs per annum.

An innovative process for the separation of carbonaceous minerals from bulk ores is presented. In this process, the surface of carbonate minerals is reacted with acid used to nucleate CO2 bubbles at the particle solution interface. Entraining the liberated CO2 gas at the surface via coating agent renders the particle more buoyant providing for a selective separation from non-carbonate containing masses. Different surfactants were tested to stabilise the bubbles and float the particles. In this paper, separation of dolomite from apatite using PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) as a coating agent, is discussed. The coal under the ridgeline is the most valuable part of the known reserve at Solid EnergyÆs Stockton Opencast Mine. Some ridgeline mining had been attempted in the past with mixed results. Solid Energy recognised that significant project planning was required in order to overcome the formidable technical issues associated with mining the area. It also recognised that the local community also had concerns about the potential impacts of this work including the visual impact of changing the topography of the ridgeline and the nearness of the Department of Conservation estate.   This paper outlines some of the risks and challenges that were faced and the management approaches that were adopted to address them.

The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. Alaska Native corporations, as representatives of the aboriginal inhabitants of Alaska, control the mineral rights to 18 million hectares of Alaska, approximately 12% of the state. These corporations were established through legislation passed by the United States Congress in 1971 designed to settle the land claims of the Native peoples of Alaska. Twelve corporations, each representative of a specific geographic and cultural region, were established and granted the mineral rights to most Native lands in their respective regions. Since that time the Native corporations have taken an active role in mineral development in the state. Generally through agreements with established mining companies, Native corporations encourage balanced exploration and development of their lands. Substantial mineral potential has been recognized on Native corporation land, which includes holdings in many historic mining districts of Alaska. Several world class deposits have been discovered on Native corporation land, including the Red Dog zinc-lead deposit, which began production in late 1989. The experience of Alaska Native corporations demonstrates that aboriginal peoples can be very positive forces in resource development.Alaska, although remotely located in the Northeast corner of the Pacific Basin, is playing an increasing role as a supplier of natural resources to the region and the world. Most of Alaska's privately held natural resources are owned by the aboriginal inhabitants of the state. These aboriginal inhabitants, now collectively referred to as Alaska Natives, have emerged in the last two decades as having a major international impact in mineral resource exploration, development, and production.

This paper reviews an analytical model that defines the relationship of weight-weighted or volume-weighted average haulage distance with bench height and other related parameters; presents the optimum bench heights under various conditions in terms of minimising the weighted average haulage distance of ore/waste during the full lifetime of an open pit mine, and discusses the truck-haulage economics of mining open pits by high bench, specifically by 15 m, 18 m and 20 m bench through marginal analysis. The observations from these analyses disprove the previous conflicting assertions that the overall weighted average haulage distance either increases or decreases monotonically with bench height. It is concluded that: (i) an increase of bench height to 15 m from 12 m is likely to be viable under the general conditions of large-scale deep open-pit mines; (ii) the reduction of haulage cost is limited with the case of increasing bench height to 18 m from 15 m; and (iii) the feasibility of mining open pits by 20 m benches is generally questionable. These conclusions may serve as a useful guide for those who advocate open pit mining by high benches.

A rationale is presented for the use of vegetation on mine dumps to minimise runoff and infiltration which become vehicles for potential pollution. The unique topography of mine dumps promotes high atmospheric advection which leads to extraordinary energy levels for evaporation discharge - the driving force of vegetation "pumps". This effectiveness is mainly a function of how well the vegetation will grow on a given site. Recent advances in technology allow water discharge by vegetation to be measured semi-automatically, accurately and cost effectively. As a result the basis now exists for a thorough evaluation of the optimum mine dump vegetation cover. This paper presents the current status of dump rehabilitation as seen by the mining industry. The significant prospects for use of vegetation to minimise mine water related problems with subsequent savings in capital and operational cost are also outlined. However, to examine the crucial questions of optimum hydrological ability, suitability and cost effectiveness of various types of dump vegetation a proposition is made to interested parties in the mining industry: The CSIRO needs potential study sites to evaluate the hydrological ability of vegetation under mine dump conditions.

Bacterial oxidation is often attributed with the advantage that a high level of gold recovery can be obtained at a relatively low level of sulphur oxidation. This is sometimes attributed to the bacteria "tunneling" towards gold inclusions, however it is often due to the presence of two or more sulphides of differing gold content which leach at different rates. Gold is liberated from the individual sul- phides linearly with oxidation. The distribution of gold between pyrite and arsenopyrite in two samples taken from a prospective gold resource was examined. The two samples showed differing responses to bacterial oxida tion and it was shown that this was due to differing intrinsic gold grades in the mineral phases and differing proportions of the minerals in the two samples.

This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

Future metal prices play a direct role in both the economic evaluation and short to medium planning of a mine scheduling sequence. It is difficult to predict with accuracy the future price of volatile metal commodities, however, it is possible to fix some future metal price, outside of long term contracts by the selling of futures contracts through a commodities exchange. The futures contract represents a fixed amount of a speci- fied quality of a commodity for future delivery at a predetermined price. Several different types of hedginc are possible, one in particular which is best suited for mining companies. There are relative advantages and disadvantages when trading in futures contracts and particular reference is made to gold contracts on the Sydney Futures Exchange.

Mount Isa Mines has been mining base metals since 1924. Annual production is currently 185 000 tonnes of crude lead, 207 000 tonnes of anode copper and 361 000 tonnes of zinc concentrate. This is achieved by underground mining of 11.7 million tonnes of ore followed by traditional flotation concentration and smelting operations.
