In the years prior to the outbreak of war in 1939 Australia's production of copper had declined from a peak of about 80,000 tons in 1911-1915 to approximately 25,000 tons in 1939. This production met the need of the slowly growing national requirement and gave an excess for export. However, with the intensification of the war effort in 1942 due to the imminence of a Japanese invasion of this country, or at least a blockade of the sea lanes, it became necessary to expand production of armaments, and consequently the demand for copper increased beyond the capacity of the industry. Importation of copper to Australia during the period 1940-1944 was 131,000 tons.When exploration of the Mount Isa orebody was first being carried out in 1928, No. ID diamond drill disclosed the presence of some copper ore lying outside the limits of the Black Star orebody2, but it was not until 1941-1942 that the development of No. 7 level in the Black Star orebody enabled the existence of a lode of copper ore of economic grade to be established. At the request of the Commonwealth Government of the day a programme of development for copper production was undertaken whilst lead smelting was continued as before the war.A series of flotation tests on up to 1,500 tons of ore at a time, was undertaken and the concentrate so obtained was stockpiled. These tests were conducted, using one section of the lead mill, and demonstrated that a concentrate grade of 22-23% Cu with a recovery of 80-85% might be expected.These recovery figures were afterwards much improved, and 93-95%was obtained before the close of smelting in 1946.

In cases where coarse gold is present in a deposit, it is usual to use the screen fire assay (SFA) method to analyse the samples. There is no doubt that this method is more accurate than the standard fire assay (FA) and reduces the risk to have a systematic bias. Nevertheless, the difference between the analytical errors of both methods can be glossed over when the overall sampling error is added to obtain the measurement error. In that case, the advantage of the SFA cannot justify its higher cost.The current paper attempts to address this question in the case of a gold ore deposit with visible coarse gold in various sampling situations (drill core sampling in exploration, blasthole or chip sampling in mining exploitation). The overall measurement error is estimated taking into account the analytical error and all the sampling error components following the Pierre GyÆs theory of sampling.Firstly, only the last sampling stage is considered when the pulverised sample is processed either to obtain one analysis sample for a FA or to be screened and subsampled for a SFA. The calculated measurement error clearly shows the advantage of the SFA specifically in presence of coarse gold. Secondly, the half core sampling is studied to explain the observed discrepancies when controlling the second half core. Finally, the blasthole sampling is treated using in situ heterogeneity models to show that the relative advantage of the SFA is hidden by the large overall sampling error.In conclusion, the choice of the assaying method is discussed at the light of the overall measurement error and in accordance to the analysis objective.CITATION:Brochot, S, 2012. A study of the effect of nickel on the cupellation process has shown that a very low "nickel limit" must be imposed for cupellation (0·08 grams nickel or 0·05 grams when copper is present). In the presence of slightly greater amounts of nickel, lead tends to spreadon the cupel with detachment of drops from the main lead pool. In crucible fusions nickel contaminates the lead button to a small extent, and this contamination is increased.in the presence of either iron or copper. Nickel also causes "shotting" of the lead, this effect being more apparent in the presence of iron.Both the spreading during cupellation and the shotting during crucible fusion are considered to be caused by adsorption of insoluble NiO at the Pb-PbO interface, lowering the interfacial tension.Excess litharge crucible charges are' fused at 116boC. to eliminate shotting. A brief· soaking in molten basic litharge slag effectively reduces the nickel content of lead buttons. The solubility of silver in litharge slags is considerably decreased in the presence of nickel. Corrections can be applied for silver losses in slags but these corrections are not as accurate as with copper ores.INTRODUCTIONThis paper on the effects of nickel on fire assays for silver is the second of an intended series describing investigations into the fire assaying method.In the first paper, discussing the effect of copper on fire assaying processes (Guerin, 1957), it was shown that certain elements, because of their relatively low affinities for oxygen, will tend to contaminate the lead button during crucible fusion and scorification. The thermodynamically-based pyrometallurgical simulation software STEPSOL (Version 3.0) provides for the modelling of activities using the Interaction Parameter Model, the Regular Solution Model, the Sub-Regular Three Suffix Margules Model, the Sub-Regular Four Suffix Margules Model and various simpler polynomial models. These are briefly reviewed, along with the major sources of data available in the literature, and the implementation of the models in the program.

The Australian Mineral Sands Industry has expanded from the initial export of mixed concentrates in the 1930s, through various development stages, to its current position as a leading world producer of individual mineral products and some further processed products. Opportunities for downstream processing of the separated minerals and locating such developments in Western Australia are reviewed, along with the role of the Western Australian Government in assisting resource development projects.

This paper considers the standard of ore reserve assessments required by lenders when presented to support requests for project based loans. The way lenders use this information to structure a suitable financial package shows why ore reserves should be measured by industry set standards. This in turn raises questions concerning the assumptions used to derive mineable reserves from geological reserves. Consideration of the variety of related problems highlights the need for assessments to be defined according to acceptable standards. These should also address the suitability of the methodology to the assumed configuration of the orebody; the degree of variance and relaibility of estimates of grade and tonnage presented; and the estimation of probability that ore will in practice fall within the defined limits. In an increasingly international marketplace it is appropriate to compare Australian industry requirements to those of similar overseas industries, in this case the United States. Lenders would like to see that individuals responsible for the preparation of ore reserve estimates are certified on the basis of their skill and expereince by an industry body such as The AusIMM. The paper discusses how each of the parameters indicated above may impact upon a lender's assessment of the viability of a project. A number of practical examples are presented where inaccuracies or inadequacies in ore reserve information have led to reduced project performance.

While there is reasonable agreement on the basic chemistry of the slag fuming process, there has been an on-going debate for nearly 50 years as to the nature of the rate controlling factors in its industrial application. There have been advocates in the technical literature for thermodynamic limitations on the one hand or kinetic limitations on the other. The different viewpoints result in very different predictions as to the technical and commercial potential of the process. A resolution of the debate becomes of importance as pyrometallurgical processes are advocated as a means of extracting environmentally deleterious elements from metallurgical wastes. The present paper reviews the arguments in favour of both equilibrium and kinetic control and puts forward the view that much of the evidence for limitation of the process by kinetic factors under all conditions is unconvincing. It is maintained that the process can approach thermodynamic equilibrium under industrial conditions and that this determines the ultimate limitation on its technical performance. It is acknowledged, however, that kinetic considerations may cause the batch process to fall well short of performance predicted on thermodynamic grounds. The strong process limitation arising from the influence of chemical thermodynamics on the likely outcome of a hypothetical continuous fuming process is contrasted with optimistic forecasts resulting from the extrapolation of process models based only on kinetic considerations.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

Since October 1972, New Zealand Steel Mining Ltd has loaded around 10 million tonnes of ironsand concentrate from single-point mooring buoys located off-shore at Taharoa on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Before the first off-shore loading system was installed a considerable research effort was applied to proving the slurry loading technique. Subsequently the system has been expanded and a new buoy, pipelines and pumping system were installed in early 1978. Since then 110,000 DWT class ore carriers have been loaded at rates of around 2600 tonnes per hour through twin submarine pipelines. This paper reviews the operation of the shiploading system and attempts to answer the question: "If the Taharoa operation were to be planned in 1980, would the same research spending be necessary or have published research results since, made such practical tests unnecessary?".

It is argued that the capture of par- ticles by bubbles is primarily caused by hydrophobic ("structural") attraction forces. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. The recent experiments of Israelachvili and Pashley (Nature, 300: 341-342, 1982) with hydrophobic mica plates provide the first measurements of the range and magni- tude of hydrophobic interaction forces.

A computer programming language known as GPSS is described and possible applications for the mining engineer are presented. The language is continually being upgraded with improved versions appearing about every three years. The tremendous power of the language is considered by comparing it with standard engineering programming languages, such as Fortran or Basic. Sample problems that can be solved using the language are indicated. The advantages and disadvantages of the languages are also discussed.

This case study reviews the Charters Towers vein systems for potential open-pittable bulk tonnage resources in' stockworks, horsetails or multiple vein systems. The review summarises district evaluation undertaken over the last 18. months before specific drill evaluations.Historical mining from Charters Towers includes in excess of six million ounces at head grades of one ounce per ton. A review and structural studies show most veins as simple, tight systems without significant horsetails or multiple sheeted systems. In addition the normal gold content of the pyritic selvages ('formation') is low and disseminated gold is virtually absent. Shoots are structurally controlled on vein/vein and vein/contact intersections. Historically high production vein systems are hosted by .,.t o of the younger granodiorite phases.Geometrically most veins dip shallowly (from 45¦ to as low as 200) in a north or easterly quadrant. Flat dips permit open cut exposure of considerable vein area at a favourable stripping ratio.

This paper describes the planning mechanism and implementation of a progressive rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. Hunter Valley Mine is a large open cut coal mine which produces approximately 7.0 million tonnes of coal (run of mine) annually for export. This production level involves the movement of some 60 million tonnes of waste and coal each year.The rehabilitation programme at Hunter Valley Mine has been developed to provide a combination of pasture, based on improved pasture species and timber belts to enhance the visual characteristics of the rehabilitated landform, whilst creating amenity in the form of shade for livestock.The operational philosophy for the rehabilitation programme is that of progressive rehabilitation. The best time to undertake rehabilitation is now.' As a result, planning for the rehabilitation programme is continuous, so that all site works are completed in time for vegetation establishment during the critical periods each year.

Studies of the morphology of seamounts within the Hawaiian, Line Islands, Gilbert and Phoenix Seamount groups indicate that the morphology and size distribution of seamounts vary significantly from one seamount group to another. The Line Islands group appears to be the most complicated of all the groups studied thus far. This group is complicated by reactivation of volcanism, which has superimposed volcanics on sedimentary rocks. These seamounts display abundant volcanic features on their summits. Seamounts within the Hawaiian seamount chain display a marked absence of volcanic features due to the . presence of thick carbonate caps. Reef platforms and sealevel benches are very common on these seamounts but are absent from seamounts in most other seamount chains in the central Pacific. Slope angles vary regionally between seamount groups. The minimum slopes are found on Necker Ridge in the central Pacific basin. The maximum slopes are found on ridge-crest seamounts. Roughness increases proportionally with mean slope angle.

The optical basicity (A, Pb2+ as probe ion) of various oxide glass systems has been measured to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts. Best conditions of glassy fragments to measure A were as follow, (1) 1 ti 4 x 10-2 wt% Pb content, (2) 0.2 mm in thickness, (ii) enough annealing (about 10 hr) at a temperature 200¦C below Tg., and (4) polishing a surface well. the variation of A with composition was correlated to that of relative oxygen activity of slag melts. The estimation of basicity of slag melts from it could be valid. The A of opaque and coloured quenched slags could not be measured. An approximately linear relationship, however, exsisted between the isomer shifts (b) of Fe3+ ion in slag derived from the Mossbauer effect and A. Therefore, -4 of various metallurgical slag could be estimated from this relationship. These results can be expected to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts as the Louis basicity.

Comb-layered textures preserve the cyclic accumulation and release of volatiles inside magmas that are temporally associated with large Cu-Au-Mo-rich porphyry ore deposits. Fluid inclusions in these textures sample pristine magmatic fluid. Microanalysis of this fluid helps constrain the physical models that operate at melt-fluid interface and in the broader magma system responsible for ore deposit formation. The 1980's has seen a revolution in gold mine developments in Australasia. We are witnessing a near ten fold increase in all phases of gold mine development ranging from exploration through to production. Ounces produced have yet to mirror this activity but have increased from a low point of 600,000 in 1980 to 1,800,000 ounces in 1985 in Australia alone. In 1980 the region had less than 10 gold mines, yet 14 new mines started production in 1985 and as many as 28 might start up in the next 18 months. Developing gold mines in the 1980's in Australasia has not been the easiest of jobs, yet the great number of new developments suggest that we have entered a new era that will rank in history along with the 1850's, 1890's and 1930's as high points.Within- our Australasian region two very distinctive styles of gold deposits are being discovered and developed. On the Australian mainland the new mines are in geologically old rocks and are mostly the low grade haloes surrounding worked out high grade deposits. Most are limited life open pit operations depending on recent innovative carbon-in-pulp or heap leach technology. In the Pacific Islands region the style of discoveries are geologically recent, large bulk-low-grade deposits often geologically analogous to porphyry copper deposits. These deposits are typically 10 to 20 times larger than those being proved up on the Australian mainland.

The paper looks at those factors which led the Latrobe Valley Community Forum to .focus on shortcomings of the consultative process. that existed around the 1980 period, and the limitations on the ability of the community of the Latrobe Valley to have input to the factors affecting their quality of life. Through a review of the Yallourn East Field Extension project it seeks to demonstrate the changes that have occurred and some of the shortcomings still existant in the consultation process.
