Newcrest Mining LimitedÆs Telfer Mine is a world-class gold and copper producer, situated in the Great Sandy Desert, in the north west of Western Australia. The mine has a number of distinctive characteristics such as being one of AustraliaÆs most remote mine sites, being within 270 km of the hottest town in the southern hemisphere (Marble Bar) and having been shut down and reopened after a two-year feasibility study. The construction of a new plant and reopening of the mine gave Newcrest the opportunity to review their mining practices and systems including the opportunity to incorporate reconciliation as a core process. Telfer is now well on the way to being one of the largest gold and copper concentrate producers in Australia. When the mine reopened in June 2003, Telfer implemented SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software system to facilitate reconciliation of geological models, production data and plant measurements. The system was implemented on site in June 2004, as a web-based information management system, integrating other existing mining and plant software packages. It continues to provide an auditable process and consistency of data, providing ease of analysis with standard and customised reporting. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Telfer. It outlines the consolidation of a number of management systems into one centralised system that can be used to compare and reconcile the tonnes and grades from the mine through to the mill. The authors outline the key estimates and measures that are used for reconciliation at Telfer, detailing the characteristics of the system used to capture the information and the benefits that have been gained through the use of a rigorous reconciliation process on a complex orebody.

Early in 1940 the development and sampling programmes in hand on the North and British Sections of North Broken Hill Limited were such as to necessitate the drilling of a large number of drill holes ranging up to about thirty feet in length. On the British Section, one purpose was to test the existence, width, and value of narrow lodes believed, for geological reasons, to occur in the walls of the existing workings. Another object was to definitely disprove the existence of payable shoots of ore in certain largerhodonite and quartz-garnet ("garnet sandstone") pillars which had been formerly left as unpayable.On the North Section, the main purpose of the short holes was to delineate the ore-body boundaries by drilling laterally from drives in ore, and thus enable level layout to be planned in advance of sill stoping. It was also desired to test the walls of stopes in those portions of the mine where the economic limit of mining is not rendered obvious by a clear-cut wall, but should be determined by assay. In these latter cases it was hoped to eliminate "prospecting by stoping," a procedure by which any doubts as to the existence of further good ore behind the low-grade walls were settled by continuing to stope laterally until all chance of such an occurrence was removed.LONG HOLE ROCK DRILLINGFollowing an investigation of recorded instances of similar practice elsewhere it was decided to use the rock drill for a series of trial sample holes. A 3-in. drifter was used. This was selected from those in use underground, and was given a special overhaul; had a new machine been purchased, a 4-in. type would probably have been obtained as being more suited to the work. The rods were H in. hollow round steel with a type "1" Jackrod thread. Couplings were of chrome steel, and were H in. in diameter, and 2 in. long. Jackbits (type "1" thread) in sizes from 2 in. to 4 in., with 1-in. gauge changes, gave a range of nine bit sizes. They were resharpened by hot milling, and were not milled to a definite gauge size.After sharpening, bits were sent underground without sorting into sizes, the drillers selecting the next bit with callipers. In view of the small scale of operations, it was not considered worth while to adopt special measures, such as the cold grinding of bits, which might have given a better product. Later, however, new bits were used exclusively, the idea being to accumulate enough blunt Jackbits to warrant a thorough treatment of the sharpening...

"An Outotec e500 TankCell, with 500 m³ of actual flotation volume, was commissioned at the Kevitsa Cu-Ni-PGE concentrator in northern Finland during 2014. This flotation cell was implemented at the head of the existing copper circuit as the first Cu rougher flotation cell. This was the first flotation cell of this size to be run under production conditions by any supplier anywhere in the world.The cell has been in continuous operation since start-up in October 2014 and has provided improvements in metallurgical performance at very low specific power consumption. On average, the cell has recovered 71 per cent of copper contained in the 0.37 per cent Cu flotation feed at a concentrate grade of 17 per cent Cu. The specific power consumption for the cell (excluding blower power) is typically around 0.4 kW/m³.After start-up, the impeller speed and superficial gas velocity were varied and the impact on metallurgical performance measured. In this paper a review of the cell operation at Kevitsa is given. Much has been written about the fact that most transformation efforts disappoint. This paper addresses factors that should be taken into consideration in planning and implementing transformation programs to ensure success.In 2009, St Barbara commenced a transformation program to address issues of chronic poor quarterly operational performance; financial pressure caused by the unreliable operational performance; and an inability to develop business plans with integrity and to reliably deliver on the plans. As a result of a number of years of disappointing operational performance, St BarbaraÆs culture was not conducive to business success.This paper uses lessons learnt during St BarbaraÆs transformation program to highlight key characteristics of change programs that can generate significant sustainable benefits. While there were many benefits from the transformation program, the most significant impacts of St BarbaraÆs program have been transformation of the companyÆs culture and capability of people as business leaders; the establishment of a business systems framework to guide the design and development of systems; and developing support functions, for example centralised procurement and supply chain, business improvement and technical services.CITATION:Campbell-Cowan, G, 2012. A laboratory size solvent extraction apparatus has been constructed, which incorp- orates three stages of countercurrent extraction, followed by two stages of counter- current stripping. The model uses a gravity flow system from one stage to another and air lift pumps to recirculate organic and aqueous phases. A novel pump/mixer system is used to transfer solutions from the mixer compartments to the settler compartments. The model has proven valuable in the teaching of solvent extraction principles.

The application of tunnel boring machines (TBM) for reef mining is a unique practice with benefits over current mining methods given the right geology and geometry of the orebody. The Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) of Nye, Montana, USA operates two mines for obtaining platinum metals. The operation is currently using a 5.5 m diameter open-type machine for further mine development, as well as another TBM that they own.The latest 7.1 km bored tunnel, known as the Blitz Tunnel, will be routed parallel to the ore deposit in igneous mafic intrusive rock, and will be used for the life of the mine operation. It will be used to map the ore deposit, and provide a rail haulage route.Detecting the reef in relation to the TBM requires careful analysis. Diamond core drilling occurs ahead, above, and alongside the machine at every 150 m. The core is drilled, logged, and interpreted on the spot, concurrent with boring. Based on the data, the TBM is readjusted so that it stays on the correct bore path.This paper will highlight the application and benefits of TBM usage for reef mining, with detailed descriptions from the mine site.CITATION:Willis, D, Jacobs, C, Luxner, T and Shanahan, A, 2014. Belt conveyors are machines for continuous transport with most applications in mining industry in Poland. This is a result of simple construction and cheap operating costs. But conveying materials by belt conveyors are often in the powder state (eg small coal, gypsum, etc) and during the transport there is a possibility of polluting the environment around conveyor route. A good solution for this problem is the pipe conveyor, where a belt is closed on the route in circular shape and flat on unloading point. Another problem which is indicated in the paper is dusting on the belt conveyor boosters. In Poland a new solution of booster has been designed, whereby dustiness of transportation powder materials is reduced by up to about 90 per cent.

The massive 1100 Orebody in Mount IsaÆs X41 Copper Mine has been extracted over the last 40 years form north to south utilising sublevel open stoping methods.De velopment has continually stepped ahead of production to provide access to new primary stoping blocks. The remaining secondary pillars contain stopes with one, two or three fill mass exposures and were constrained by access requirements and stope extraction turnaround time.The remaining southern mining areas consist of large 40 m wide by 300 to 400 m long east-west transverse pillars that have been left to provide access for ventilation and service requirements. Three large transverse cross-cuts or transverse pillars û 4180 x/c, 4010 x/c and the Panel pillar now remain. The 4180 x/c was the last major transverse pillar to be successfully broken.This transverse pillar is being extracted in a retreating sequence, creating 3SLOS stopes due to the surrounding backfilled stopes.In recent years the extraction of the first, and most critical, stopes in the transverse pillars have resulted in large changes to the induced stress field. This paper describes the extraction of the 1.1 million tonne stope P418 in the 4180 x/c pillar.T echnical challenges that were faced and how they were overcome to allow for the successful extraction of the stope are described.Critical to the success of the P418 stope extraction were the rehabilitation methodology used; extraction strategy modifications to address deteriorating ground; mass firings with multiple directional changes; managing the exposure of backfill of variable strengths; and geotechnical monitoring prior to, during and after extraction.

By the use of flotation tests it was confirmed that there are two functions of oxygen in sulphide mineral flotation. Sized samples of galena and chalcopyrite were sulphidized, washed free of excess sulphide ion, and then contacted with air-saturated water for certain lengths of time. The mineral was then transferred to a sealed laboratory flotation cell containing water with a known concentration of dissolved oxygen. Xanthate and frother were added and flotation continued for 1 min.Both the extent of mineral oxidation and the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly affected the flotation of galena and chalcopyrite. The response to a change in either variable is dependent on the level of the other, but generally best flotation occurs with the maximum degree of air saturation of the pulp. Galena flotation is hindered by oxidation of the mineral beyond a small threshold amount but a similar effect for chalcopyrite was not observed...

Pre-concentration has potential to significantly improve Mineral Resource efficiency by removing gangue early in the process, before energy intensive and expensive comminution and fine processing. However, there are numerous options for pre-concentration and the performance and benefits of these are very case specific. To determine the best option for a particular deposit and to successfully integrate it into the overall mining and processing operations requires comprehensive evaluation. This needs to consider orebody suitability, technology capability and economic viability. The in-situ variability of a deposit and how it is influenced by mining methods and the liberation size of gangue are key factors which are generally not well understood. Geostatistical methods provide an insight into orebody variability, and the overall selection of any pre-concentration solution must be an integrated approach between geology, mining and processing. Many pre-concentration evaluations investigate the potential of just one option. Technology selection should start wide and may include: selective mining, pre-screening (with or without selective blasting), sorting (bulk and or particle), coarse gravity separation (e.g. jigging, DMS), coarse particle flotation, magnetic separation, etc. The upgrade performance of these processes is very ore specific and should be determined from testing, with detailed multi-component modelling used to determine the overall process performance. Many of these pre-concentration processes require significant ancillary equipment, feed preparation and materials handling. It is important to realistically estimate all costs to understand overall economics and select the best option. Some examples showing evaluation and comparison of pre-concentration options are presented in this paper. These include assessments of in-situ variability using geostatistical tools, process modelling of pre-concentration options and overall performance, preliminary layouts and cost estimates, and economic evaluations.

With the technique and data obtained in using the blast hole diamond drill for "Removal of Horizontal Level Pillar by means of Blast Hole diamond drilling at New Occidental Gold Mines N.L.," as described in Proceedings No. 133 of 1944, and a series of experiments using the blast hole diamond drill for stoping at New Occidental and New Cobar Mines over the past two years, a benching method of stoping has been developed using 2 inch coring diamond drill bits, resulting in efficient and economical ore extraction in these large ore bodies.During the experimental stages the standard H-inch blast hole was used, but the deflection of the holes, when using this solid bit, either decreased or increased the burden of the hole when it became necessary to drill holes deeper than 45 feet.It was found that after blasting vertical holes deeper than 45 feet, the ore did not break satisfactorily over the full length of the hole; on one occasion as much as 30 feet of bench was left at the bottom of the face, which had to be subsequently re-bored andblasted.As this defect was also noticeable to some extent even when the holes did not deflect, it was then obvious that the explosive had become less sensitive in the lower section of the hole. This was probably brought about by pressure being built up ahead of the detonation wave in H-inch hole, resulting in desensitization of the explosive.Another series of experiments were carried out, using 2-inch solid bits, which enabled a much greater burden on the holes, and the use of primacord for the full length of the hole.This gave satisfactory results regarding breaking and fragmentation, but was uneconomic owing to the excessive consumption of diamonds, and the slow rate of drilling.Further experiments were then carried out using 2-inch coring bits, (Fig. 1) which allowed holes of 90-feet to be bored with little deflection, and proved to be entirely satisfactory as to cost and speed of drilling.

Tin mineralization in both eastern and western Tasmania shows a spatial correlation with middle Palaeozoic biotite granites and adamellites. The range of composition of these granitic rocks is restricted with respect to Mg, K, and Na content. Because this compositional restriction is shown by granitic rocks from other tin provinces, the concept of a genetic relationship between these granites and the associated tin mineralization is reinforced, and similar concentration mechanisms may be involved.Gold mineralization is largely restricted to eastern Tasmania and in contrast to the tin mineralization is rarely spatially associated with the middle Palaeozoic granitic rocks, although most authors have suggested a genetic correlation with hornblende and/or biotite granodiorites.Although few analyses are available, the granodiorites that are spatially associated with gold deposits exhibit similarities to granitic rocks from gold provinces elsewhere. These features suggest a possible genetic relationship between gold mineralization and the granodiorites.The composition of granitic rocks may be used as an aid to exploration in delineating areas of potential tin and gold mineralization in granite terrains.

"The focus of this paper is on measuring the composition to improve mill feed quality to minimise the processing of waste, optimise process performance, reduce processing costs and minimise the generation of tailings.Technologies used since the 1990s in the cement and coal industries for measuring conveyed materials have been operationally proven and effectively derisked. Despite this the acceptance by the minerals industry has been very slow except in iron ore. Real-time penetrative full stream measurement using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) for multielemental analysis and microwave transmission for real-time moisture analysis provide representative, tonnage weighted dry weight per cent results on a minute by minute basis. Analysis is unaffected by particle size, dust, layering/segregation, mineralogy and belt speed. The technologies are explained and performance examples given. The benefits derived from real-time compositional analysis are predicated upon a good understanding of deposit geology, mineralogical associations, waste to ore interfaces, amenability to mining, metallurgical processes and downstream customer requirements. Processing may include basic preparation in the case of direct shipping ores, minor beneficiation using simple upgrading methods, or concentration using more complex processing systems such as flotation, leaching or many others. The value of real-time data from primary crushed conveyed flows, using analysis of increments smaller than a single haul truck’s load, is very beneficial in process plants aiming to reduce waste processing, increasing feed grades and increasing metal recoveries. Grade variability can be utilised to divert conveyed increments of waste, direct shipping ore (DSO) quality material bypassing beneficiation, and subeconomic material amenable to upgrading diverted for further preconcentration by particle separation (sorting, heavy medium etc). Paybacks of a few months have been commonly achieved where the real-time technologies have been applied in the minerals sector. The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has developed an airborne sensor, the SWIR Full Spectrum Imager (SFSI) which detects in the short wave infrared range of the solar spectrum from 1220 to 2420 nm. In June of 1995, a demonstration flight was undertaken in the state of Nevada with the support of the companies listed above. The focus of the flight was to collect image data over well known mineral deposits with the objective of evaluating the applicability of this sensor to alteration mineral mapping. Some of the Nevada sites chosen include Cuprite and Goldfield, volcanic hosted acid sulfate systems; Yerington, a structurally complex porphyry copper deposit; and Virginia City, a quartz-sericite-pyrite vein system with advanced argillic pods. Ground spectral data was collected with the PIMA-II spectrometer. Solar reflectance calibration was done by Desert Research Institute personnel at Virginia City and Cuprite. This paper will discuss the configuration of the sensor and present image and ground data for Goldfield and Virginia City.

Determination of the mineralogical location (deportment) of minor and trace elements (including credit and penalty elements) in base metal concentrates can indicate whether further processing is likely to (a) reduce the levels of the penalty elements, and/or (b) direct selected elements into other plant products, thereby increasing current concentrate grade or increasing payment for credit elements. To determine the deportment of elements requires knowledge of the proportions of the minerals present and their individual element contents. In addition, knowledge of the liberation and locking is important, as this can affect any possible further processing. Mineral proportions can be determined by a variety of methods including chemical analysis, point-counting, area-counting, QEM*SEM, image analysis and mineral separation. In the case of a Broken Hill zinc concentrate, several of these methods were used and gave consistent results.

"Sunrise Dam Gold Mine (SDGM) is located 820 km from Perth, 220 km from Kalgoorlie—Boulder and 55 km south of Laverton in Western Australia. The SDGM main pit had successfully operated since 1997 and was due to be completed during 2012. An opportunity existed to extract the high-grade crown pillar – 600 kt @ 7 g/t for 135 koz by either open pit or underground methods.The crown pillar was the 60 m (vertically) thick remaining part of the high-grade Cosmo orebody between the top of the paste filled underground mine stopes and the planned base of the final open pit shell.There were two major difficulties being considered when choosing the underground or open pit options:a major wall failure in the upper section of the main pit wall directly above the crown pillar restricting access from the base of the open pit to the top of the crown pillarimpact of a high rainfall event while the crown pillar was being mined from either surface or underground resulting in flooding of the underground mine workings.This paper will discuss the following issues:the process to identify and evaluate the risks in both options using knowledge based modelling software; this technique allowed the evaluation of a complex set of assumptions to arrive at the preferred optionremediation of the Watu failurethe selection of the preferred option and the challenges encountered before, during and after the extraction of the crown pillarthe planning and geotechnical work to ensure the safe extraction of the crown pillarsuccessful outcomes transitioning from open pit operation to a solely underground operation.Citation:Robeson, A, Cowan, M and Brockman, M, 2016. The Hishikari gold deposit, discovered by the Metal Mining Agency of Japan, has become a giant class epithermal gold deposit with the highest grade of gold yet recorded in the world through detailed exploration and development by the Sumitomo Metal Mining Co Ltd. The exploration strategy involved a regional approach combining geological and gravity surveys over a 900 km2 area which had historically produced over 120 t of gold. These surveys were carried out to grasp the common geologic features of epithermal gold deposits in the survey area. A genetic model for epithermal gold deposits in the area under regional survey was also considered based on detailed research of the Kushikino epithermal gold deposit which was in operation at that time. This model was applied to the targeted areas, and important relationships between mineralisation, host lithology, intensive propylitic alteration and gravity highs became apparent. The Hishikari block was selected in this way and bonanza gold was discovered during drilling. Since the development of the Hishikari mine, information useful for further exploration for the same type of deposit has been accumulated.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted full-scale explosion experiments, to evaluate the strength characteristics of various seal designs, used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests conducted within the multiple entry section of PRLÆs Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) is currently the only accepted test method used by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), for deeming a seal design suitable for use in American mines. These explosion tests are labour intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. The PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within PRLÆs Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from these chamber tests compare favourably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the chamber test approach also allows for the determination of the sealÆs ultimate design strength. Size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of seal designs as a function of entry size are also presented.

The sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is becoming more widely adopted as an underground mining method as mines become deeper and target lower grade mineralisation. SLC has been successfully adopted in increasingly complex and wide-ranging conditions in the past 10–20 years, demonstrating the flexibility of the method. Various challenges encountered at SLC mines around the world have led to significant differences in operating practices, mine performance and mine productivity. Unfortunately, aspects related to productivity, operational performance and best practice are not widely published and remain with individual companies. Limited information is publicly available to compare operational performance of SLC mines in the various conditions where the mining method is now being applied. To overcome this shortcoming, a global review of SLC operations was undertaken over a three-year period as part of the Cave Mining 2040 research consortium. The purpose of the review was to document technical and operational practices, hazard management strategies and key benchmarking metrics at SLC mines around the world. A total of 21 mines spread over four continents and 17 different mining companies were included in the project. The main outcome of the project was a manual of operational and technical practices, benchmarking of key metrics and documentation of the current state-of-the-art for each aspect of SLC mining. This paper describes the main findings from the benchmark in terms of mine productivity, including mine development, production and mining costs. The implications of mine scale, depth and ground conditions on operational performance at each of the benchmarked mines is described and charts are provided comparing key productivity metrics.
