"THE ASSESSMENT of pneumoconiosis-producing dusts in mines and other industries is usually undertaken for one or more of three reasons: (1) To compare dust exposures at particular operations with standards of permissible dustiness in order that hazards may be evaluated and preventive procedures initiated where required.(2) To study particular operations with the objective of improving dust control devices or procedures by locating dust sources. (3) To obtain data which, along with the results of medical investigations, may assist in understanding the causes of dust-induced diseases or aid in the establishment of permissible standards of dustiness. Most dust measurements are made for the first of these reasons -to evaluate dust hazards so that they may be controlled. For this purpose, four quite different assessment techniques have been in widespread use for many years. One of these is based on the konimeter, an instrument familiar to most .Canadian mining men; a second on the impinger, which is also widely used in Canada, and almost exclusively so in the United States; a third on the thermal precipitator, used extensively in Britain and South Africa; and a fourth on the tyndallometer, a light-scattering instrument used in Germany."

"Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization at Abbeytown mine and Twigspark quarry comprise the only known car¬bonate-hosted base metal sulfide deposits in the Sligo syncline, northwest Ireland. Limestone sedimentation occurred uniformly throughout the region during the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) as observed by field relationships and lithofacies; however, petrographic and stable isotope evidence indicate that host-rock dolomitization occurred under different conditions at localities to the west and east of the Ox Mountains inlier, suggesting significant uplift and geologic isolation of these areas prior to dolomitization. Localized fluid flow systems are thought to be responsible for sulfide mineralization and associated epigenetic carbonate cements. West of the Ox Mountains inlier at Abbeytown, evidence of three geochemically distinct fluids are observed: (1) a lower-temperature, lower-salinity fluid (70°-130-°C, 4-9 wt.% equiv. NaCl); (2) a lower-temperature, higher-salinity fluid (70°-140°C, 15-24 wt.% equiv. NaCl); and (3) a higher-temperature, moderate-salinity fluid (165°-220°C, 8-14 wt.% equiv. NaCl). Similar fluid types were observed at the Twigspark deposit. The source of the higher-salinity fluid is likely seawater evaporated to near the point of halite precipitation. The higher-temperature fluid is thought to have been derived from deep circulation of basinal brines. It is speculated that mixing of the higher-salinity fluid with the high-temperature fluid was vital for ore formation at Abbeytown because fluid inclusions in sphalerite have homogenization temperatures and salinity values that fall along a mixing trajectory of these end member fluids. Also, areas where the high-salinity end member fluid is absent are barren of sulfides. Less complex fluid systems are indicated for sites east of the Ox Mountains inlier where no sulfide mineralization was observed. Data from base metal sulfide prospects in northwest Ireland indicate no connection with the regionally extensive flow system thought to be responsible for Zn-Pb deposits throughout the Irish Midlands.Les minéralisations en sulfures de Zn-Pb de la mine Abbeytown et de la carrière Twigspark sont les seules gîtes de métaux usuels à encaissant carbonaté connus dans le synclinal de Sligo, au nord-ouest de l’Irlande. Underground coal gasification is technology which enables energy to be extracted from coal beds where mining by means of classical methods is either impossible or uneconomical. The process of coal gasification itself is a complex phenomenon which includes chemical and physical processes: thermal, hydrological and mechanical. Additionally, the analysis of underground coal gasification is difficult to carry out for environment reasons, this being due to the local characteristics of the areas where it is carried out. This paper deals with interaction of geo-reactor with surrounding rock mass, it omits the chemical processes inside geo-reactor itself. Due to the complexity of the processes proceeding and during underground coal gasification coupled with minimal practical experience in using this technology, it is difficult to estimate its influence on the surrounding rock mass. Within this scope, the use of numerical programs can be useful. This paper presents a trial of modeling the processes accompanying underground coal gasification. The processes proceeding and during the underground coal gasification are characterized, and the significant, specific phenomena are discussed, with respect to the influence on the surrounding rock mass. For the chosen processes, examples of numerical calculations are presented. These enabled conclusions to be drawn and also provided directions for the modeling of the underground coal gasification processes.

"Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. The processing facility consisted of two separate processing plants for oxide and sulphide ores. The oxide plant processed oxide ore bearing gold and silver ore using cyanide leaching and Merrill Crowe processes, while the sulphide plant produced a copper concentrate using conventional flotation. Cormidom is a commendatory example how mineral processing facilities can co-exist in balance with the environment. In 2014, natural occurring copper oxide contamination with finer grained copper-zinc sulphide mineralisation was expected to dominate the sulphide ore body. In anticipation Cormidom contacted the original plant designer Met-Chem to assist in overcoming this challenge. Test work indicated that increased flotation time and subsequent very fine grinding were required. Met-Chem provided the detailed engineering and Cormidom proceeded with the expansion project internally. Currently Cormidom has processed the sulphide ore successfully by implementing flotation modifications. This paper describes the history of Cormidom, test work on the “new” ore body, modification in process design in the Cu-Zn sulphide flotation circuit, construction and implementation.INTRODUCTIONCorporación Minera Dominicana (CORMIDOM) was a wholly owned subsidiary of GlobeStar Mining Corporation (a Canadian based minerals exploration company) with extensive exploration of base and precious metals in the Dominican Republic. In 2007-2008 CORMIDOM constructed the Cerro de Maimom project. The company was subsequently sold and purchased by Perilya Limited from Australia in 2013. Cerro de Maimón is located in the Dominican Republic on the island of Hispaniola approximately 75 kilometers northwest of the capital city, Santo Domingo. It is near the town of Maimón in Monsenor, Nouel Province (see Figure 1)."

Modification of the silicon in Al-Si alloys can be performed by adding a very small amount of some elements like Na, Sr and Ca to alter the form of silicon from an acicular shape to a fine fibrous one. This modification results in a considerable improvement in mechanical properties especially elongation, Metallographic observations in A356 alloy indicated the degree of the modification with Na, Sr and Ca, They showed that the effect of Ca as a modifier is not as strong as is Na or Sr while Na is the most effective modifier, Although modifiers improve mechanical properties, they also increase porosity in castings, The reduced pressure test (RPT) and Tatur test showed that the increasing porosity with Na is the most and with Sr is the least.

Introductory During the past few years, salt (sodium chloride) strata have been encountered in western Canada in a number of wells, while prospecting for oil and gas. The ever increasing number of such wells points to the presence of a vast salt basin, the boundaries of which are at present unknown. This basin extends in a northwesterly direction from a point near the United States boundary south of Regina, crosses the Saskatchewan- Alberta boundary northwest of Unity, Sask., and continues with more northerly trend to Waterways and beyond. The beds, as encountered, appear to have a general dip to the southwest of between 10 to 20 feet to the mile and a pitch along the strike to the southeast. Thus one finds the salt strata at Waterways, Alta., at 600 feet below the surface (121 feet above sea level) whereas at Radville, Sask. south of Regina, the top of the salt is at a depth of 6,643 feet below the surface (4,430 feet below sea level). Whether this is a continuous salt basin or a series of separate basins is not yet known. We do know however, that in some of the well~ more than one salt horizon occurs while in others which normally should have encountered corresponding beds, the salt strata are absent. This latter condition, however, may occur only in the southern part of Saskatchewan, where a barren area seems to come in from the southwest. In the northwestern part of the basin, on the other hand, the occurrence of the salt strata seems to be more regular and continuous, and depths at which salt should be encountered in a drill hole in this part of the basin may be predicted with a fair degree of accuracy.

"IntroductionRECENTLY, the Saskatchewan Research Council (Saskatoon ) marked the completion of one of its coal-related projects with the publication of the Bibliography and Index of Coal in Saskatchewan and Adjoining Provinces and States, hereafter referred to as the Bibliography and Index of Coal. Over a two-year time period, literature was surveyed and indexed and bibliographic data were compiled using a computer-assisted information retrieval system called FAMULUS. The final publication contains 1150 bibliographic references, which are cross-referenced by six indices.The project was initiated in September 1974, in support of Saskatchewan's Coal Resources Evaluation Program , an ongoing research program sponsored by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources (Ottawa) and the Province of Saskatchewan. This program places emphasis on such areas of concern as the occurrence of deposits, chemical and physical properties, calculation of reserves and computer-assisted applications for the evaluation of lignite resources in the Province. Attention is also given to aspects of geophysical exploration, mining conditions and economics, by-products and the transporting of lignite. These are the subject areas .covered by the Bibliography and Index of Coal.The over -all objectives of the literature indexing project may be enumerated as follows: (1) to build a specialized resource library by surveying established public and specialized libraries, and commercial data bases; (2) to enter library data into the FAMULUS information retrieval system, to be used to generate bibliographies and indexes, and to retrieve information by the use of specified searching techniques; (3) to make this library data available to interested persons."

"AbstractThe paper identifies the major components of price change which affect the determination of the internal rate of return of a mining project. It illustrates several price indexes which may be used to measure general price increases, identifying techniques which might incorporate them into mine valuation procedures. The ""hurdle rate"" for new investment is discussed.IntroductionDECISIONS regarding the value of an orebody and whether or when to mine an orebody are based on an estimate of the cash flows which would be associated with its exploitation. These pro-forma cash flows represent cash in or out of a possible mineable deposit and include exploration and construction costs, sales revenues, operating expenses, taxes, debt borrowings, interest and debt repayment. It has long been recognized that when combining the cash flows occurring over the life of the mine, dollars received or paid out early have greater value than those received or paid out later. This time value of money has been incorporated into mine evaluation calculations through the use of present-value or discounting techniques. Another factor affecting mine valuation, inflation, is not accounted for by valuation techniques now in use. In recent years, price changes have become more volatile. In the past, price change could easily be ignored when evaluating potential mines. Today, the combination of larger investments and greater price volatility leads to great concern about the effects of price change on mine valuation."

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health-Spokane Research Laboratory (NIOSH-SRL) have developed a Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS). Assessment of current hoisting technology has shown that monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety, production, and maintenance advantages. The SCMS consists of conveyance position and guide displacement sensors, a battery power supply and charging system, and a new sensor to measure hoist rope tension. This device provides a warning of the occurrence of ?slack rope? a particularly dangerous condition. A 2.4 GHz radio link transmits data to the hoistroom. A reduced scale hoisting test facility has been constructed to test these components prior to field trials. The advantages of monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from a skip or cage top will be discussed. Field tests are underway in full-size shafts to refine the concept and evaluate long-term reliability and maintenance requirements. Application of this technology may result in decreased maintenance costs as well as safer, more productive hoisting operations.

"As study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between mill liner wear and grinding energy efficiency and to assess the opportunity to control mill speed to improve energy performance as mill liner wears. The study involved analysis of plant operating data and liner wear profiles over time. The operating work index was found to be an effective tool to identify the decrease of grinding efficiency along the liner service. The plant data show that the mill grinding efficiency as determined by monitoring the operating work index, and throughput decreases as liner wears. However, efficiency and throughput can be maintained by either changing the liner more frequently or by increasing the mill speed. Two scenarios for increasing mill throughput were analyzed. The first one involves changing the liner before the efficiency drops and the second one requires increasing the mill speed from 75% to 79%. Both scenarios show financial benefits that can be used in mill operations.INTRODUCTION The analysis of the mill power draw is used in this study as a key parameter for comparing mill liner profile and its effect on mill performance. Current technology and simulation software used in the mining industry do not factor in the impact of liner wear profiles in grinding efficiency and mill throughput (Toor, 2013). To address this gap, this study provides an analysis of key factors affecting mill throughput and grinding efficiency: mill speed, ball loading, and liner profiles. Several years of plant mill operating data, published research papers, and MillTraj® simulation results are used to demonstrate that face angles impact grinding efficiency and throughput and that mill speed can be used to overcome this problem. Moreover, the liner profile wear analyses clarify a mismatch between actual and estimated power draw calculations."

"The iron ores of the Kiruna Mine in Sweden are of exceptional quality but for the phosphorus content in certain zones of the orebody. The prevention of mixing ores high in phosphorus with those low in phosphorus has always been of significant economic importance. The ongoing introduction of tele-mining and automatic haulage by LHDs requires new means in the field of quality control underground, as the experienced miner as well as the underground laboratory assistant no longer are involved in the process. As of 1998 LKAB has been testing prototypes of LIF Analysers for non-contact and real-time measurement of the phosphorus content of ore being transported by LHDs from the stopes to the respective ore pass assigned to a certain ore quality. The principles of the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence, the different test phases and results are described and conclusions made. With bulk sorting of ore underground the mining engineer supports the efforts of the metallurgist in the processing plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Kiruna Mine of LKAB, Sweden is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. In the early nineties LKAB decided to develop the Kiruna orebody further down from the 775m main level to a new main level at 1045m. This development programme was realised while in the mineral processing section and in the pellet plant further capacity was added (Wyllie 1996).In addition to deepening of the mine, which opened up 330 million tonnes of ore, the exploitation of the so-called lake ore was included in the future planning, adding another 1 15 million tonnes of mineable ore. At an annual production of approximately 20 million tonnes of ore the Kiruna Mine today looks at a developed ore reserve sufficient for the next 20 years.All of the competitors’ ores traded in the world market are from open pit operations. LKAB compensates for the obvious disadvantages by continuous efforts to make the best possible use of her high quality magnetite ore deposit. This objective is realised by combined efforts in the pellet plant, the mineral processing plant and the mine. Propriety processes, latest big scale equipment and high tech solutions for automation lead to high quality sales products at a reasonable cost."

THE Polaris-Taku mine is a new gold property, situated in the far north-west corner of British Columbia. Production was started in November, 1937, at the rate of 150 tons a day, and recently has been increased to 200 tons. The property, which promises to become one of British Columbia's important gold mines, was developed and brought into production in twenty-nine months after work was started on it as a virtual prospect in June, 1935, by Edward C. Congdon and associates. Inaccessibility, extraordinarily complicated geological problems, and difficult metallurgy retarded development of the property before acquisition by the present interests, an::l, in fact, discouraged two companies that had spent substantial sums upon it from continuing development. This paper is concerned with reviewing the development of the property and describing the principal features of the geology, the mining and metallurgical practices, and the equipment employed. Friction Stir Welding (F SW) is a novel "green" manufacturing technique due to its energy efficiency and environmental friendliness. This solid-state joining process involves a rotating tool consisting of a shoulder and/or a probe. The shoulder applies a downward pressure to the work-piece surface, constrains the plasticized material around the probe, generates heat through the friction and causes plastic deformation in a relatively thin layer under the bottom surface of the shoulder. The rotating probe mainly drags along, plasticizes, and mixes the adjacent material in the stir zone, creating a joint without fusion. Friction Stir Processing (FSP), a variant of FSW, has been developed to manufacture composites, locally eliminate casting defects, refine microstructure and/or improve the associated mechanical and physical properties including strength, ductility, fatigue, creep, formability and corrosion resistance. However, major challenges such as tool design and wear currently limit the use of F SW/P for manufacturing applications, particularly for high melting temperature or high strength alloys. In this review, the FSW/P tools are briefly summarized in terms of the tool types, shapes, dimensions, materials and wear behaviors.

This study focused on determining the stability of thin shotcrete fill fences at a hard rock mine in northwestern Ontario during increased pour rates of paste backfill. Determination of the stability of the fence is needed for both personnel safety and to avoid failure of a fence. Failure of a fill fence during backfill activities would have severe impacts on production and potential hazards to nearby workers. Approved fill fences at the mine are a slender design of 10.5 centimeters of shotcrete applied to a rebar framework with burlap lined ?bedspring? backing. Approved mine standards dictate that fill rates may not exceed 1.5 meters of paste depth per 10-hour shift when pouring behind a flat fill fence. To decrease the backfill cycle time the study looked at fence stability during increased pour rates of 2.5 meters paste depth poured within a 10-hour shift. An instrumentation design was developed including pressure cells, strain gauges, and tilt-meters that were built into experimental fences to observe the effects of increased pour rates on lateral wall pressures, strain development in the rebar and shotcrete reinforcement, and physical deformation patterns along the face of the fence. The data was analyzed for overall stability.

"Smoky River Coal Limited has successfully completed a major program involving the pattern rock anchoring of a high, steeply dipping footwall slope. The slope dips at approximately 65 to 70 degrees to the north, is benched for the upper 200 feet, is supported with rock anchors for another 240feet, and is unsupported at the pit bottom. In addition to the height and steepness, several structural features including shears, rolls and stratigraphic pinch- outs complicate footwall stability.This paper presents an overview of the project with descriptions of the engineering geology and footwall design, anchor installation, instrumentation and monitoring and a cost summary.IntroductionSmoky River Coal's mines are located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Grande Cache, Alberta, approximately 200 miles west of Edmonton. The Smoky River coal leases were initially developed in the late 1960s and, except for minor shutdowns, have been in continuous operation since 1969 producing a low volatile metallurgical coal, mainly for the export market. Initial coal production was from underground mines; sur face mining started in 1971, and a large surface mine, No.9 Mine, was opened in 1974. Since that time, a number of open pits have been mined within the No.9 Mine area. Surface mining is by conventional shovel-truck method s with the use of a backhoe for mining the narrow pit bottoms.Coal recovery is mainly from the No.4 seam, which has a typical unstructured thickness of 20 feet. The most attractive opportunities for open-pit mining exist in areas of over thickening of the coal seam in the hinge zones of synclines and anticlines and in dip-slope situations. The mining of the more structurally complex pits and steeply-dipping footwall slopes requires that consideration be given to footwall stability."

"Poor Pb-Zn selectivity during Pb flotation in laboratory tests on a Mississippi Valley-type Pb-Zn ore was traced to apH effect. In the pH range, 9.5 to 11.0 sphalerite floated readily without copper activation. Compared to sphalerite flotation with copper activation this procedure gave equivalent selectivity but reduced flotation rate.Possible mechanisms of this sphalerite flotation without copper activation are discussed. Activation by Fe(OH)2 is suggested, the Fe- + ions being derived from superficial oxidation of pyrite in the ore. IntroductionGalena and sphalerite commonly occur together. A typical procedure, using xanthate collectors, is to float the galena first, at pH - 8, followed by flotation of sphalerite after activation with copper (II) sulphate at pH - 10 (to depress pyrite).Flotation tests following this procedure in an undergraduate laboratory course with a Pb-Zn ore from Polaris failed to achieve consistent selective flotation of galena. Occasionally a considerable amount of sphalerite, even though unactivated with CUSO4, floated. This was traced to accidentally high pH. A systematic study was carried out which revealed that sphalerite floated readily in the pH range 9.5 to 11.0 without activation by CuSO4 This paper describes the results of the study and discusses a possible mechanism of this flotation of sphalerite."

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells generate electricity by reacting hydrogen and oxygen. A thin, bipolar electrode material provides a medium for electron exchange with the electrolyte, alternately serving as anode at the hydrogen-rich side and cathode at the oxygen-rich side. Stainless steels have sufficient corrosion resistance to qualify as bipolar plate materials. However, the protective chromite layer increases the contact resistance, the battery’s internal resistance; and thus, decreases the electrical efficiency of the fuel cell. A heat-treatment is proposed and investigated via simulation by ThermoCalc / Dictra and experimentally, to generate a sufficient quantity of conducting surface carbides that breach the protective layer. Once carbide growth is arrested, a subsequent heat-treatment is also needed at a higher temperature to restore the corrosion resistance by filling-in the Cr-depleted layer (sensitization) around the carbide particles.

"Crushing and screening theory and application has remained fairly consistent in the last 50 years. The application of such equipment is guided by varied formulaic conventions and rules that due to the entropic nature of the process, remains more an art than a science. The variability of conditions creates an environment in which trial and error becomes the principal means of process balance and control. This paper illustrates some of the theories behind the process, plus other assumptions, postulates, myths and misconceptions that exist within the crushing and screening industry.INTRODUCTIONContinuous material balance calculations are habitually performed in the design of new comminution circuits as well as in the valuation of existing circuits. A continuous material balance calculation is one in which the input rate of material is equal to the output rate for each unit functioning in the circuit. At continuous analysis, there is no accumulation or losses of material within the system, as it is when performing a discrete event analysis.In order to produce viable and manageable mine-to-mill material, whether it is ready to leach or ready to mill, we must reduce the material in a series of stages. The power demand increases as the material size decreases, as it is when folding a piece of paper successively. As with the paper, there is a crushing size limitation that is a consequence of the mineral properties such as work index, moisture, viscoelasticity, etc. Comprehensive knowledge of crushing plants in both the aggregate and the mining industries show that, after three stages of crushing, a particle size distribution originating from a blasted deposit can be reduced from an nominal maximum size of 500 mm to a nominal maximum size of 12 mm. if the last stage of crushing is set in closed circuit, the screen openings will be able to yield a smaller top size.Achieving steady and continuous material balance poses major difficulties as crusher lose their settings, screens blind or peg, and material characteristics change geographically or seasonally. Overloading conditions in crushers and screens are nothing but counterproductive, and the net losses of an unbalanced circuit can be overlooked when mining operators are paying a lot more attention to the evermore complex systems downstream.It is not simply the crushing of the mineral but achieving the right size for the downstream milling process that will yield the maximum amount of energy savings."
