"This paper was' prepared to emphasize the part that coal washing tables can play in the development of many of the reserves of coking coals in Western Canada_ It covers a brief history of the development of the coal washing table through the present third-generation unit, which suspends from overhead steel beams and is driven by a counter-rotating gear mechanism. The design and operation of this unique table are covered in detail.An analysis of actual operating data is included, with explicit statistical breakdowns of the table products. The data used were actually produced by operating coal companies, and also produced by the United States Bureau of Mines while gathering data for a research investigation. Table feed capacity is discussed, as well as performance criteria and the parameters of relative table performance. Several typical table flowsheets are described, emphasizing the specific reasons for their use. The paper covers the past and present value of the table to the United States coal industry, and makes mention of the newest addition to the family of suspended, multiple-deck, counter-rotating, gear-driven, coal washing tables, the CONCENCO ""88"" Deister table."

By the very nature of mineral deposits the quality of the raw material generally fluctuates and should be known for optimum processing. Early classification, for example, of limestone into road-metal grade or lime grade or of run-of-mine ores into high grade, low grade and waste as well as information for blending or for dosage of reagents are prerequisite for economic processing. Non-contact, real-time and on-line rock identification or assessment of quality parameters can be realised by introducing the analysis of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) into the mining industry. LIF analysis is an optical method evaluating the basically known photoluminescence properties of matter, however, extending the application into hitherto unimagined fields by use of high-energy pulsed lasers and time-resolved analysis of fluorescence in the ultra-violet, the visible and near-infrared domains of light. LIF analysers and test work in a limestone quarry and a cement plant in Germany as well as in an iron ore mine in Sweden are described. First results of test work are available and proof this technology to be promissing.

THE THEME of my remarks provides a great deal of latitude. I shall therefore take advantage of the scope it offers to look at our industry across a broad spectrum. My observations reflect a Canadian mining man's varied career as a geologist, mine operator, geological consult ant and company executive in Canada and overseas ... under differing cultures, business environments and political jurisdictions. I was fortunate to come into this industry in the mid-1930's when it was characterized by great enthusiasm, drive and resourcefulness. It was the beginning of a burgeoning era of some 30 years' duration in which the individualist, the entrepreneur and the builder found ample room for expression. As I contemplate the environment in which we now have to operate and try to perceive what lies ahead, I find myself deeply disturbed. Something serious has happened to this industry along the way. It appears that our very success has been the source of our undoing. I believe it is useful to summarize our industry's basic strength at home as a take-off point f or assessing its position in world terms. I hope that I can focus on some of the things that, in my view, must be done for this industry and by this industry to restore Canada's historic role in the world mining community. The Canadian mineral industry provides 140,000 jobs. It pays the second -highest average weekly wages and salaries among the country's major industries. The output per employee in the mining industry is estimated at about three times that for the economy as a whole.

"Probably the only thing that can he said about conveyor belt scales without fear of contradiction is that they have been responsible for as much or more puzzlement, argument and frustration than almost any other piece of equipment commonly found in ore processing facilities. To be sure, there are certainly a good number of satisfactory installations, some of these having been achieved through forethought and careful consideration in the early stages of plant design, while others seem to owl their success to what seems to be little more than good luck or white witchcraft; and it might also appear that black witchcraft or other gremlins are solely responsible for the poor performance of many belt scales that enjoy well-designed installations with apparently good operating conditions.This paper is intended to acquaint users with the major operational reasons why belt scales seem so fickle (and downright ornery too), and establish some reasonably simple test standards against which the performance of scale hardware can be measured. Then it shall be shown how the design flexibility of electronic scale systems can offer particular advantages in overcoming some of these everyday problems in a practical way, and without undue inconvenience to plant operations."

The lack of commitment is due to several reasons: variable mineral processes and technologies, market fluctuations, and excessive costs and inadequacies of applicable products supplied by computer vendors.

The current status of the international zinc market is summarized, and a supply /demand outlook is presented for the next five years. A number of technical problems facing the industry are outlined. Introduction ZINC has sometimes been called the unknown metal. Considering that on a world basis it ranks third among non-ferrous metals in production and consumption, zinc retains a certain modesty. It has no distinctive colour like copper, lacks the low density of aluminum or magnesium and is not always easy to identify as a product. The 'spangle' of galvanized steel is probably zinc's most distinguishing feature. The purpose of this article is to develop an over-all review of zinc. Starting with the current position of the metal, the major factors that will shape its future will be described so that an assessment of the outlook for zinc can be made.

The operation of the pilot plant for the S-C Copper Process during 1976 has provided the basic data for the design of a commercial-scale plant. This paper introduces the commercial aspects of the S-C Copper Process through the presentation of a process flow diagram, a schematic flow diagram and basic design parameters for 75,000 tonnes per year (tpy) copper rod production from chalcopyrite concentrate. Basic operating requirements are outlined and a preliminary estimate of operating and capital costs for a Western Canadian location are summarized. The results have been compared with a modern smelter/electrorefinery to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these two alternatives and to show why the new S-C Copper Process technology should be of interest to the copper industry.

Pressure vessels in hydrometallurgy and many chemical process industries throughout the world require the use of specific lining systems to protect the parent vessel materials from corrosion and/or abrasion. Typically, these lining systems are required for processes that are corrosive and operate at elevated temperatures. Two basic lining system types arc: 1) refractory linings in conjunction with an impervious corrosion resistant membrane, and 2) metal-clad vessels consisting of titanium or other corrosion resistant metal bonded to a carbon steel shell. Operating conditions play a key role in selecting the type of lining system to be utilized for a specific application. Lining systems in turn have an impact on the process vessel size, which ultimately affects the capital cost of the vessel. The capital costs for each type of lining system must be considered for each application, as well as maintenance concerns, quality control, and delivery. It is clear that operating conditions play a key role in the final selection of lining systems utilized for specific projects based on initial capital cost, life-cycle maintenance costs, and overall service life. This paper will examine the fundamentals of each lining system, their inherent technical strengths and weaknesses, and present relative cost comparisons for each lining system as they apply to specific operating conditions and vessel sizes.

Copper, as far as we know, was the first metal used by man, and due to the fact that it occurs in many places in the 'native' state, and also to the ease with which it may be shaped, it has played an important part in the evolution of civilization. Copper tools with inscriptions dating back to 6,000 B.C. are known in Egypt, where the metal probably got its start as a useful material in human hands. Just how far back the use of copper in Canada dates is difficult to say, but it was in use by the Indians in the Lake Superior country long before the arrival of the first white man. For many generations the Eskimos also have used copper derived fr0m deposits of the native metal found in the Coronation Gulf district. Due to the metal's many unique qualities, imperishable with age, ancient implements and utensils are apparently as good today as when they were made, having withstood the onslaught of time probably better than objects of any of the other base metals. Copper alloys so well with other metals that today it is second only to iron in its industrial value. Even at the beginning of the eighteenth century the world's production of copper was probably not more than seven thousand tons a year, with Great Britain producing three-fourths of this. One hundred years ago the mines of the United States, Chili, Mexico, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and Tasmania, which now produce about nine-tenths of the copper of the world, were totally undeveloped. Ln 1926 the world production of copper was approximately 1,658,000 tons, which was seventy thousand tons greater than in the preceding year; but growing demand absorbed the increased production, so that the stock of rough copper throughout the world is comparatively small. Of this huge tonnage of the metal, Canada produced four percent, two-thirds of it emanating from British Columbia, nearly one-third from the Province of Ontario, and the balance from Quebec.

A brief description is given of the requirements which No. 4 Shaft has been designed to meet and of the methods by which two-stage winding of rock has been accommodated in a single shaft sunk to a depth of 7,421 ft. This is followed by a consideration of the factors which led to the decision to sink the shaft as rapidly as possible. Introduction T HE No. 4 Shaft of Hartebeest-fontein Gold Mining Company, Ltd., has been sited to serve the deep southern area of the mine, some 1,500 claims in extent, between the elevations of 6,250 and 7,300 ft. below surface. From this area, some two-thirds of the mine production will ultimately be obtained. Above the 6,-250-ft. elevation, an existing shaft hoisting system, situated adjacent to the reduction plant, is of adequate capacity to cater for all ore hoisted to surface for milling. No. 4 Shaft will therefore be required to provide downcast ventilation of 1,000,000 c.f.m., together with surface hoisting facilities for men, material and development rock and underground hoisting

Camps large and small are scattered over thousands of miles, some served by excellent communication lines, many in remote regions of the north. Common to most of the deposits is that they are worked by underground methods, and rely on adequate hoisting installations for the success of their operations.Hoisting in some form •pre-dates all other mechanical operations in mines and the hoist remains one of the most important pieces of equipment at the average mine. It provides the single line of communication along which must pass the men and materials to mine the rock, and in turn carry the ore to a place for refinement.Development of Mine Hoists in CanadaCanadian designed hoists were first built and •placed in operation about the year 1880 and have since developed in pace with the rapid growth of the Canadian mining industry. Early machines were all of the steam or compressed-air driven types, of light construction and driven by two duplex slide-valve open-frame type engines. "The rising cost of extracting metals from existing traditional deposits, increasingly stringent environmental regulations and a greater awareness of corporate social responsibility issues are all factors in stimulating the examination of mine tailings and small-scale alluvial deposits as a potential source of new raw materials. Furthermore, despite tougher economic times the demand for commodities remains strong, in no small part as a result of the growth of the world’s emerging economies.This combination of social and economic factors looks set to continue in the long term which will encourage greater recovery of materials from previously ignored sources such as mine tailings and ores from alluvial deposits.An expansion in the recovery of useful materials from mining-related activities is likely to require the use of robust and innovative techniques that have a built-in degree of future-proofing; DC plasma technology is one such technology.As a result of its ability to separate the valuable metal and minerals from the waste material while destroying hazardous compounds, Tetronics’ DC arc technology offers an alternative approach to resource recovery from a wide range of mine ores. Harmful cyanide compounds and the vast quantities of water used in conventional hydrometallurgical processing are avoided when plasma processing is adopted. DC arc technology also brings additional benefits, including: the extremely effective destruction of organic materials, the conversion of the inorganic material into a re-useable aggregate and the high tolerance of the process to fine and dusty materials. "In July 2017, Deilmann-Haniel signed a contract with IOO Slavkaliy to sink two 750 metre (m) deep freeze shafts for the Nezhinsky Potash mine in Belarus. This is the second shaft project where this technology is employed after two over 1,000 m deep shafts for a potash project in Saskatchewan, Canada, have been sunk by the application of the Herrenknecht Shaft Boring Roadheader (SBR) technology. Developed to sink shafts for green field projects in soft to medium hard rock, in frozen or unfrozen geology, the machine technology utilizes a roadheader-type cutterhead on a telescopic boom to mechanically excavate the rock, and a pneumatic mucking system to convey the muck from the face into the buckets. This leads to a manless face during the sinking cycle and thus a significant improvement in terms of workplace safety. For the Nezhinsky project, the SBR design was significantly modified in close cooperation between Deilmann-Haniel and Herrenknecht, based on the available experience and the special requirements of the project. Such modifications have been for example the adaptation of the Pneumatic Mucking System to cope with wet material as well as dry as originally planned or the shaft lining moving from shotcrete application to jump for and tubbing installation for which a step-change hands-off tubbing erector for the placement of segments was designed. Further modifications to optimize the machine technology for the requirements during shaft sinking were applied on the two machines for the Slavkaliy project as well as several revisions to match the special project requirements. The SBR is suitable for soft and medium hard rock up to 100 MPa UCS. The main design limits are maximum weight of the machine with 400 tonnes and length or height of 50 m due to the depth of the pre-sink. The Pneumatic Mucking System was changed in all components, sheaves and rope arrangement were redesigned and the concept of the hoist system was also re-engineered. The SBR in Belarus is configured for a daily sinking rate of three metres and all systems behind the cutting boom are not the bottle neck of the whole system. The works on site started in November 2017 including freeze hole drilling, construction works, site setup, installation of hoists winches, permanent headgears and other components required for sinking. The SBRs arrived on site in June/July 2018 and were preassembled on surface and then lowered into the 50 m pre-sink. SBR #1 started full face sinking in mid-December 2018, and SBR #2 in late January 2019. By the end of February 2019, the machines were at 150 m and 100 m depth respectively, and achieved up to 3.6 m/day concrete lined shaft. The SBR and the sinking system, the experiences, problems, technical solutions and performances of this challenging project will be presented in this paper."

The influence of blasting on the excavators’ efficiency, defined as mucking rate (amount of rock mucked per unit time) and mean bucket load (amount of rock loaded in each bucket operation), is investigated. Rock characteristics, blasting parameters (drill pattern, explosive energy, and charging), and the excavator’s performance (truck loading time and number of buckets to fill a truck) were monitored in eleven blasts in an open pit iron ore mine. ANFO, ANFO/emulsion blend, and watergel were used in the blasts and the powder factor was varied between 0.98 and 1.45 kg/m3. The mean bucket load is mainly affected by the bucket size, which is independent of the blasting parameters. Besides the relation with the mean bucket load, the mucking rate was found to be positively correlated with the explosive energy, whereas no significant correlation with the rock properties was found. The analysis of the data, together with other published works, suggests a non-monotonic relation of the mucking rate with the powder factor, with a maximum mucking rate at a certain powder factor. This is especially true when the useful work of the explosive per unit rock volume is used rather than the classical mass powder factor and when only the amount of explosive above grade is considered.

More than a decade ago, CANMET management recognized the need to make better use of existing technological information in mining and extractive metallurgy-two fields basic to the economic well-being of Canada. There were at that time no indexes or files dedicated to disseminating technical information for the many minerals mined and processed in Canada, including coal. CANMET, with the nation's largest research and library resources in the minerals field, was in a unique position to fill this need. Initial efforts were concentrated on building a mining file, beginning with identification of world sources of published information, development of a special thesaurus of terms for language control and adoption of a manual indexing/retrieval system. By early 1973, this file held 8,300 references, with source, abstract and keywords given for each reference. In mid-1973, operations were computerized. Software for indexing and retrieval by batch mode was written by CANMET staff to utilize the hardware facilities of EMR's Computer Science Centre. The resulting MINTEC file-one of the few files of technological information produced in Canada-is the basis for the national literature search service in mining offered by CANMET. Attention is now focussed on building a sister-file in extractive metallurgy using the system already developed. Published information sources have been identified and a thesaurus of terms is being compiled and tested. The software developed for CANMET's file-building operations has several features, including the selective dissemination of information and production from magnetic tape of photo ready copy for publication, as in a bi-monthly abstracts journal.

ABSTRACT Solvent extraction is used in many acid leach uranium circuits to upgrade and purify the uranium-bearing solution prior to final product precipitation. A number of strip options are available to recover the uranium from the loaded organic. This paper compares seven of these options on the basis of typical capital and operating costs for the solvent extraction circuit and downstream uranium processing and also considers other related issues. The aim is to provide an objective comparative assessment of these options that could be used as a qualitative guide in process selection or improvement.

"LET ME FIRST OF ALL thank you for sending this invitation to me to participate in this Annual Meeting of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia. As an engineer, although I don't get an opportunity to practice very much engineering these days, I am, of course, always pleased to be able to meet with my fellow engineers to exchange views, but I must admit that today I feel a little bit out of place in the midst of all the experts that are here today. Let me make one thing clear - I'm a generalist! Your program states that I am to make a keynote address. I have always thought that a keynote speech is one that says something that has not been said before - announces some new program or policy, or says something startling. I am sure you will understand when I tell you that keynote addresses are made by politicians and that civil servants speaking publicly are usually expected to give an account of what is, or what is likely, to happen as a result of policies that have been announced in keynote speeches by politicians. I am reminded of a statement by a distinguished parliamentarian who said, ""However exalted a civil servant may be, he is not above the elected officials."" So today I will confine myself to giving you an overview with particular emphasis on the development side of oil and gas. The theme of ""Oil and Gas"" is a topical one these days. I suppose it's because of all the copy that is being generated by the media on the U.S. energy crisis, the Mid-East situation, the fact that most of the world's proven oil reserves are in Arab hands and, of course, the accelerated exploration activity that is taking place in the North Sea, in the Arctic, and off the coast of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."

"Over the last 50 years there has been a dramatic evolution in the metallurgical engineering field in Canada. In the 60s the field was dominated by large American and UK groups, often selling major process and equipment packages. The local content was limited to wrap around facilities and the civil and structural work. The mining and metallurgical companies had strong internal teams to lead these projects. Over the decades and business down cycles the large foreign contractors disappeared or re-structured and the mining companies largely shed their engineering and project management groups. The resulting gap was filled by a cadre of local specialist engineering companies, some of whom have grown to be world leaders in the field. The paper traces this evolution and examines the underlying causes and consequences."
