Recently, 7xxx aluminum alloys have been evolved into new variants for thick semiproducts which have low amount of 2nd phases and low quench sensitivity. Commercial 7xxx alloys, especially in the thick forgings made of big ingots, often entail microstructural inhomogeneities and concurrent poor mechanical properties due to limited heating ranges and slower quench cooling. In this study, high strength aluminum alloy 7175 and 7050 are adjusted as an attempt to control the equilibrium phases (M-, T- and S-phase) to have optimum microstructure for the thick forging applications. The effects of the relative content of (Zn, Mg, Cu) on the evolutions of the coarse equilibrium phases, hardening response and resultant mechanical properties are investigated. Equilibrium phases (M,T,S) are evolved depending on the constitutional effect, primarily the change of Zn:Mg ratio, and cooling rate following solutionizing. The formation of the T- and S-phases is effectively controlled, and M-phases are homogeneously precipitated in the adjusted (dilute and high Zn:Mg ratio) alloys. It provides extended heating range and lower quench sensitivity than conventional alloys. The attempts ensure the microstructural homogeneity and improved properties, and is expected to be uniquely applicable in 7xxx thick forgings.

The purpose of an undercut is to undermine a block of ore which will then proceed to cave into draw holes just below the undercut. Undercut-ting is the final and most vital phase in the development of an ore block. Since its purpose is to undermine and induce caving into a block of ore, great care must be exercised to avoid premature caving by removing only enough rock to permit undercut development to proceed. Several undercutting methods, used over a twenty-year period, are re-viewed and their suitability is com-pared with ideal requirements.

Acidic mine waters containing solubilized uranium have been observed in many uranium and some copper mines. In every case, the sulphide and iron oxidizing bacterium, Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, was also present. This bacterium provides the ferric iron required to oxidize u+4, both by oxidizing available ferrous iron and by oxidizing pyrite or other available sulphide minerals. This latter oxidation also provides sulphuric acid and may increase extraction by exposing more uranium. The enhancement of bacterial activity and the results of some field tests are discussed.

The most common type of waves used for probing anisotropy of rocks in laboratory is the direct P wave. Information potential of the measured P-wave velocity, however, is limited. In rocks displaying weak triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends just on 15 linear combinations of 21 elastic parameters, called the weak-anisotropy parameters. In strong triclinic anisotropy, the P-wave velocity depends on the whole set of 21 elastic parameters, but inversion for 6 of them is ill-conditioned and these parameters are retrieved with a low accuracy. Therefore, in order to retrieve the complete elastic tensor accurately, velocities of S waves must also be measured and inverted. For this purpose, we developed a lab facility which allows the P- and S-wave ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 directions distributes regularly over the sphere. The velocities are measured using a pair of P-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized along the radial direction and using two pairs of S-wave sensors with the transmitter and receiver polarized tangentially to the spherical sample in mutually perpendicular directions. We present an inversion method for elastic parameters describing general triclinic anisotropy. We demonstrate on synthetic tests that the inversion becomes more robust and stable if the S-wave velocities are included. This applies even to the case when the velocity of the S waves is measured in a limited number of directions and with a significantly lower accuracy than that of the P wave. Finally, we analyze velocities measured on a rock sample from the Outokumpu deep drill hole, Finland, including the error analysis for several levels of confining pressure.

At a meeting of the Montreal Branch of this Institute in the autumn of 1928, the Honorable J. E. Perrault, Minister of Mines for Quebec, announced his intention to enlarge the Bureau of Mines of Quebec by the addition of a Division of Geology. The announcement further stated that the geological work proposed should be begun in the following field season, and that it should be on a substantial scale of not less than six field parties. The announcement was received with enthusiasm and much encouragement was held out for the success of the effort. It has been thought that the present meeting would be a suitable occasion to present a report of progress of this Division for the three years that have since elapsed. History This, of course, is not the first geological work to be undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Prior to the establishment of the Division of Geology, the Bureau of Mines had not been unmindful of the need of geological research, but it had always lacked the means necessary to any sustained work. For more than 25 years the late J. Obalski was the Superintendent and the sole occupant of the Bureau. Yet, even then, Obalski, besides routine visits to mining districts, made a few exploratory trips along the north shore of the St. Lawrence river and one to Chibougamau, but without the equipment necessary to effective results.

"In 1991/1992, INCO undertook a successful R&D program aimed at extending the lining lives of the top blown rotary converters (TBRCs)at its Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery (CCNR) and the electric furnace at INMETCO. At the laboratory scale, this effort was divided into three phases. In the first part, mineralogical work was performed on six refractories that were either currently being used to line these vessels or were considered suitable alternatives. In the second part, this mineralogical knowledge was used to help determine the compositions of slags that would not corrode the bricks at the operating temperature (1600°C) of the above furnaces. Finally, several important properties of the six refractories were measured to complete their evaluation as candidate linings. This paper reports the results of all three phases of the laboratory scale R&D work.The mineralogical work showed that rebonded fused grain magnesite-chrome (RFG-MC) bricks consist principally of periclase with minor amounts of free chromite and trace quantities of silicates monticellite and sometimes olivine. The bricks are principally held together by periclase-periclase direct bonding. Of note, the bulk of the chromite exists as exsolved precipitated blebs within the periclase grains. These likely redissolve at high temperature.Slags on the periclase liquidus coexist stably with these refractories. Examples are presented using CaO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 slags at~1600°C.Finally, the two refractories manufactured using close to 100% fused grain material generally outperformed the others in terms of physical properties and certainly were superior in their resistance to slag penetration damage."

"Abstract -The Jinqingding gold deposit, situated in the east Jiaodong Peninsula of Shandong province, is typical of the pyrite-quartz vein gold deposits in the Muping-Rushan gold belt of China . The gold deposit is controlled by a great NNE fracture zone and is composed of several lenticular orebodies within the fracture zone occurring in the Kunyushan granite massif. The Kunyushan granite massif was formed by the replacement of the Archean Jiaodong group.The main minerals associated with gold are pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite; the gangue minerals are dominated by quartz, sericite, microcline and calcite. The mineralizing event can be divided into four stages: (1) pyrite-quartz; (2) quartz-pyrite; (3) siderite-polymetallic sulfides; and (4) calcite-quartz. Gold occurs mainly as native gold and electrum in stage 1 and stage II. There are some evident differences between pyrite from major stages of gold mineralization and that from minor stages; these include differences in crystal forms, size and composition of fluid inclusions.Wallrock alterations consist of sericitization, silicification, pyritization and potash-feldspar alteration. Five alteration zones can be distinguished from unaltered granite (zone 0) to vein lodes (zone IV). Au and Ag increase rapidly from zone 0 to zone IV, Cu increases continuously, while Pb and Zn increase slowly. R-type geological factor analysis indicates that the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn bear a close relationship to wallrock alteration."

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

"Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Sommaire - Le gîte de sulfures massifs volcanogènes du Mont Fronsac Nord est la découverte de sulfures massifs la plus récente dans le Camp Minier de Bathurst. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. Le gisement contient une ressource géologique évaluée à 14 Mt de sulfures semimassifs (>60%) localement massifs à basse teneur, incluant une zone à haute teneur de 1.26 Mt titrant 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, et 0.40 g/t Au. Des sulfures massifs sont trouvés partout à l’intérieur de cette enveloppe d’altération, mais ils sont plus fréquents près du contact supérieur. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

THE travelling grate coking process was developed by Shawinigan Chemicals, Limited, at their Shawinigan Falls plant. The first production unit went into operation a month prior to the outbreak of the war. Since then a substantial part of the coke used in the manufacture of calcium carbide has been produced by this process. In the following will be given a short account of the development work, a description of the process and the equipment, a discussion of the properties of the coke, the economics of the process and its future possibilities. EXPERIMENTAL WORK The carbide industry is a large consumer of coke, one ton of commercial carbide requiring for its production 1,200 lb. This coke must meet certain specifications in order to be acceptable. It should have a low ash content, preferably below 8 per cent, and the sulphur and phosphorus content must not be above specified limits. The size of the coke is also important. If it is too large it has to be crushed before it can be used in the furnaces, and if it is too fine it may have to be screened and briquetted. In addition, it must be dry. Although it was generally possible to purchase coke, including petroleum coke, and coke fines, in the quantities required, it became increasingly more difficult as time went on to obtain coke of a suitable quality at an attractive price. It was therefore natural for us to look to coal carbonization as a means of basing the supply of the fundamental raw material for carbide manufacture on something more solid than the shifting conditions of the coke market.

"The Jasper Gold mine in northern Saskatchewan produced a total mill feed of 140 127 tonnes at an average grade of 19.0 g/t Au. Both diamond drilling and chip samples from underground workings returned extremely high values, up to 12851 g/t (375 oz/T) Au over 0.10 meter from a chip sample. In the presence of such extremely high grades, the accurate estimation of reserves is a major problem.In the first part of this study, production data from the mine were used to evaluate the results of a variety of reserve estimation techniques in this environment. In two out of three cases studied, indicator kriging with assays cut to 342.9 g/t (10 oz/T) gave extremely good results. In the third case, however, indicator kriging gave unacceptable results. Instead, lognormal kriging of uncut data gave the best results.Secondly, from the same database, a number of drill-hole spacings were simulated, and reserves estimated from the simulations. As may be expected, the results of this analysis show increasingly better results with tighter drill-hole spacing. However, even with a 5 m by 5 m spacing the variation from actual grade was quite large. This is not a systematic under- or over-estimation of grade, rather a random scatter of results.The results of this study show very clearly the problems of deriving good estimates of reserves when extremely high-grade samples are encountered. There is a high degree of randomness to this data base, so reserve estimation in this situation will remain a high-risk operation."

Abstract -At True Hill in southwestern New Brunswick, low-grade porphyry-style Bi-Sn-Mo greisen mineralization is associated with the cupola of an epizonal granite porphyry (granite) that also exhibits three episodes of brecciation. The first episode of brecciation is an in situ, 8 m to 10 m wide transitional zone of net-veined to coarse-grained "blocky" endogranitic mesobreccia that is chloritized and greisenized and hosts weak disseminated mineralization. ln a zone doser to the host rock­ granite contact, angular fine- to coarse-grained endogranitic mesobreccia with greisenized matrix is superimposed on the earlier transitional breccia. The latest episode is fault-controlled and consists of quartz- and chalcedony-hosted subangular to rounded fine-grained "pebble" mesobreccias that crosscut and brecciate the other breccia types, as well as the adjacent altered metasedimentary country rocks. The first two episodes of brecciation are magrnatic-hydrothermal in origin related to hydrofracturing of the granite carapace and are accompanied by greisenization and mineralization, whereas the post-mineralization, silica-hosted, "pebble" mesobreccias related to hydromagrnatic, low­ temperature fluid circulation and/or boiling along faults near the contact. These magmatic­ hydrothermal and hydromagmatic mesobreccias are similar to those associated with W-Mo-Bi porphyry-greisen mineralization at the Mount Pleasant deposit.

"Residues from the CESL Copper process were leached using the CESL Gold process. The kinetics of reaction were confirmed to be fast with over 50% of the gold consistently extracted within 2 minutes of leaching. Final gold extractions under the conditions tested here were between 80-90% obtained within 90 minutes. A model for the CESL Gold process was developed. This model is slightly different based on whether the copper concentrate leach residue was ground or unground prior to leaching: the gold leaching rate constant is approximately twice as fast for the ground samples. Unground residues had a P80 of 13 ?m whereas ground residues had a P80 of 10 ?m. The model predicts a 43% decrease in leaching time for ground residue versus unground residue to achieve the same extraction under otherwise identical conditions. The model was more accurate for the ground samples. INTRODUCTIONTeck's CESL Process (Jones, 1996) was developed to provide an economically attractive alternative to traditional copper smelting. It has since evolved to also deal with copper concentrates containing valuable impurities such as nickel and undesirable ones, such as arsenic, while reducing downstream costs. Effective recovery of gold and silver is essential to the economics of the CESL Process. The Brook Hunt 2007 copper concentrate assay data (Wood-Mackenzie, 2007) were examined to determine the ratio of gold plus silver value relative to the contained copper. As indicated in Figure 1 below, nearly two-thirds of concentrates have 10% or more of their total value tied up in their precious metals content.CESL has extensively examined the recovery of gold and silver at bench, pilot and demonstration scale, which has culminated in the present CESL Gold Process (Barr et al., 2007). The process targets the precious metal contained in the leach residues produced in the copper portion of the flowsheet. This residue has two primary components which influence downstream processing. The major iron-rich fraction (-75 wt%) of the residue is a mixture of various forms of iron oxide precipitates including hematite and jarosite (Sahu and Asselin, 2011). The iron fraction ranges from amorphous to crystalline in nature depending on the compound precipitated, upstream operating conditions and feed material composition. The lesser, but by no means less important, fraction is a mixture of elemental sulphur and unreacted sulphides (principally pyrite).Elemental sulphur formed during the oxidative leach of the copper concentrate reacts with cyanide to form thiocyanate (SCN-) making a traditional cyanide leach approach too costly. Since the SCN formation reaction strongly depends on contact time with the CESL residues (Po, 2007) short contact times were preferred. This factor guided the development work towards the eventual room temperature, pressure cyanidation process which results in near complete gold dissolution in 90 minutes. A recent CESL gold demonstration campaign treating 1.5 t/d of residue from the copper oxidation step achieved an average gold extraction of 91% (96% maximum)."

Nowadays, all French former uranium mining sites are remediated and redeveloped. If needed, mining waters containing radium have to be treated before discharged into the environment. Classical radium treatment consists in a (Ba,Ra)SO4 salt precipitation and radium monitoring was carried out using a time-consuming analysis called emanometry. Three zeolite samples have been tested to remove 226Ra from mining water. In batch experiment, radium was totally (R=100%) and quickly removed after 2 minutes contact time. Continuous sorption experiments were carried out through a vertical column at lab scale. Chabazite is the most efficient zeolite with an 226Ra activity below 0.2 Bq/L until 60000 Bed Volume. Chabazite is always efficient although radium content in material reaches 150 Bq/g. 226Ra uptake was also tested at semi-industrial scale on a pilot plant. More than 3000 m3 were successfully treated with a radium content below 0.1 Bq/L. The environmental impact assessment of Ra-chabazite was characterized by using batch leaching tests made according to the NF EN 12457-2 standard as applied on all wastes. Ra-chabazite stability is excellent during this test: radium leaching is very low, less than 0.005%. A new 226Ra measurement method was developed by ICP-MS for a better analysis reactivity. This new method was carried out in a couple of minutes with a lower sample volume than emanometry. The validation was performed according to the French NF T90-210 standard for the calibration function definition, the limit of quantification, the accuracy and the interferences.

Initiated and financed by the Canadian Space Agency, Micro-Rover Platform with Tooling Arm (MRPTA) project has targeted the development of a robotic system with remote control and autonomous navigation capabilities for testing a large variety of analogous planetary missions. Although developed for planetary exploration, the navigation system is highly suitable to such areas of application as construction and in mining. Autonomous navigation system is capable of moving the platform to predefined position(s)/orientation(s) while continuously mapping the terrain, assessing its traversability and choosing most appropriate path to follow. Designed according to the JAUS (Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems) framework, the system consists of several interconnected components. Following components are of particular importance: Pose Estimator (PE), Terrain Evaluator (TE), Map Manager (MP), and Path Planner (PP). The PE uses a minimal sensor configuration consisting of an azimuth gyroscope, inclinometer and wheel odometry. The PE provides reliable pose estimates in spite of pronounced slippage by employing extensive use of fused data. The TE uses a nodding laser scanner which continuously sweeps the area in front of the platform and constructs a ?traversability grid? (TG) of the surrounding area. Multiple TGs are constantly constructed along the platform motion path are combined into a terrain map maintained by the MP. The PP uses this map to compute a motion path Obtained path is executed by the motion controller and remains current until it is contradicted by the most recent map ? at which point it is re-planned. This paper addresses integration issues, lessons learned and also outlines the possible applications for construction and mining.

"The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

"Abstract-The 682.8 ± 1.6 Ma Tickle Point Group consists mainly of rhyolite flows and tuffs with- in the Avalon Zone of the Appalachian Orogen in Newfoundland. Stratabound massive sulfide mineralization, consisting of pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena, occurs at the Winter Hill prospect, where a lower pyritic, Cu-rich zone and an upper Zn-Pb-rich zone are hosted by a carbonate-calc-silicate lens. At the Frenchman Head prospect, stringers of pyrite, minor sphalerite, chalcopyrite and rare galena are hosted by felsic volcanic rocks of the Tickle Point Group .Base metal ratios, metal zonations and the overall stratigraphic framework suggest that these sulfide occurrences represent volcanogenic massive to semi-massive sulfide mineralization (stringer type at Frenchman Head). As such these prospects represent the only known VMS occurrences within the Avalon Zone of Newfoundland. Pb isotope data indicate that galena from the Winter Hill prospect is less radiogenic and older than galena from Dunnage Zone occurrences, and suggest that the Winter Hill mineralization formed in an environment tectonically distinct (exotic) from the Dunnage Zone."
