"In the Utility Nickel furnaces, the hearth and sidewalls are lined with high-Al2O3 bricks. During charging and thermal cycling (more so as the linings on these reverberatory furnaces age), pieces of brick spall or abrade from the refractory and collect on the top of the bath. These pieces are removed using a non-corrosive slag toward the end of the heat when the bath temperature is ~1600°C.This benign liquid can be generated by two methods. First and most obvious, suitable ingredients can be pre-mixed so that the flux (flux A) is isochemical with the non-corrosive slag. All that is needed to produce this targetted slag is heat. Second, in other proportions (flux B), the pre-mixed ingredients generate a corrosive slag that melts completely at -1200 °C and corrodes some but not all of the brick particles on the bath surface. As the reaction progresses, the slag changes composition eventually attaining the targetted benign composition. Using this option, additions are monitored to avoid overfluxing. In both cases, the generated slag/brick mixture can then be rabbled from the furnace. This practice has been successfully used for over two years and has been a factor in extending Utility Nickel furnace life to its current levels (about25% increase)."

The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.

The Doyon Mine?s Zone 1 (Altered Zone), found along the southern boundary of the mine, encompasses approximately 20% of the mining reserves. The mineralisation is found in a series of steeply dipping narrow veinlets, which are contained in an extremely weak host rock: a sericitic schist with RQD values ranging from 0 to 20. Longhole mining methods are used, with either longitudinal or transverse approaches, depending on the width of the ore zone. Dilution is of critical importance in the mining of this zone, particularly in longitudinal stopes, where dilution levels have averaged 55% since 2000. Major factors influencing dilution in this zone include the stope geometry and standup time. A two-phase approach has been developed to mine and backfill longitudinal stopes: the top of the stope is pastefilled after approximately half of the broken ore has been extracted; the remainder of the ore is extracted once the plug has cured; and the remaining void is filled. This method has been used in six stopes to date, resulting in an average dilution of 17%. This paper details the application of this technique and its effect on dilution.

"The Strathcona Concentrator is one of three concentrators presently operated in the Sudbury District by the Nickel Division of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited. Production commenced in 1968 at a milling rate of 6,300 tons per operating day. Milling capacity was increased in 1970 to 7,200 tons per operating day. 7he ore contains iron, nickel and copper primarily in the form of pyrrhotite, pentlandite and chalcopyrite, while the common gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc and chlorite. The primary function of the concentrators is not only to liberate sulphides from silicate gangue minerals but also to separate pyrrhotite from the more valuable minerals pentlandite and chalcopyrite.SummaryExcessive wear on steel liners and blinding of grates in a regrind pebble mill of the Hardy Concentrator was corrected by the use of rubber liners and grates. The success of these resulted in their installation as original linings In all grinding units except the rod mills at the Strathcona Concentrator. The operation of rubber liners and grates when sized mine ore was used as the grinding medium was satisfactory confirming the Hardy Concentrator experience. Problems developed when the grinding medium was changed from sized mine ore to steel balls in that blinding of the grates occurred. This resulted in conversion of the units to overflow type mills through removal of the grates. The lifter bar life was significantly increased by using higher lifter bars.Grinding PracticeOperation of a regrind pebble mill commenced in 1961 in the Hardy Concentrator. This operation demonstrated the economic feasibility of using sized mine ore as grinding medium. Problems caused by excessive wear of metal liners and grates combined with blinding of the grates were corrected in 1964 through installation of rubber liners and grates."

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

"Noranda’s Brunswick mine is a 10 000 t/d producer of lead-zinc-copper-silver ore that has been in operation since 1964. Mining of this multiple lens deposit is primarily by blasthole stoping techniques between 400 m and 1200 m below surface. The combination of a high overall extraction ratio, an overall steeply dipping tabular shape, and high horizontal stresses (twice the vertical) have elevated the induced stress regime to levels comparable to much deeper operations. Improved mine design, and a better understanding of how the rock mass responds to mining in high-stress environments is essential to improve overall recoveries and maintain safety. Seismic monitoring has proven to be an essential tool at Brunswick, for both short-term safety of workers, and long-term strategic planning.Practical case studies illustrate how seismic data, particularly source parameter information, can be used to measure the rockmass response to mining and improve mining layouts in difficult regions. As the global trend continues toward mining in deeper, higher stress environments (e.g., South African Witswatersrand Basin, Sudbury Basin) and as local extraction and thus ground stresses continue to increase in existing deposits, seismic monitoring will play a critical role in mining safely and economically."

ABSTRACT; his paper proposes new methodology to define the pit limits that yield the maximum net present value (NPV) for a deposit, under a given economic scenario and for a given discount rate. The method uses an algorithm that combines dynamic programming and heuristics. It was tested for evaluating deposits with different sizes and various grade distributions. For the discount rate of zero, the results confirm that the economic pit limits are the same as that defined using Lerchs Grossman method. However, when discount rates higher than zero are used, the pit limits differ, yielding a higher NPV.

"Drawing upon the experiences of a gold extraction plant startup in the Southern Pacific, this paper will describe the importance of the commissioning phases to the project outcomes to achieve early target production despite an overall time compression to attain full plant production. Some of the highlights of the paper include: impact of roles played by the Owner’s construction and operations representatives during project commissioning, the formation of a capable and competent “Mod Squad,” availability of trained operating personnel, control over work priorities and the scope of work needed to bring the plant to safe initial operations. The commissioning team comprised subject matter experts skilled in process technology supported by “generalists” thoroughly conversant in overall plant operations. The merits of a structured team approach to brainstorm and resolve commissioning challenges as opposed to direction from individual subject matter experts is discussed. IntroductionStartup or commissioning is a unique period in the life of a project. Each stage of a project-exploration, feasibility, design, construction, commissioning, initial operations and continuing operations-requires special talents, know-how, and practices. Each stage makes particular demands of the people involved. Initial operations are no exception.Having experienced the 1997 startup phases of oxide and sulfide facilities for a gold extraction plant at a remote island in the Southern Pacific, I can attest to the many challenges and rewards. Commissioning for both facilities was extremely successful and brought the entire project on line well ahead of the targeted completion dates. Using this specific project as an example, this paper will highlight some of the key features of project commissioning. In this paper, the term “pre-commissioning” denotes all activities that lead to mechanical completion; “commissioning” occurs when feed is introduced; and “initial operations” are defined as the duration when operations accepts the system/facility and takes over."

The Mining Association of Canada launched the Towards Sustainable Mining initiative in 2004. TSM's goal is to improve the mining industry's performance by aligning its actions with the priorities and values of Canadians. The initiative currently includes performance indicators for four areas: tailings management, energy use and greenhouse gas management, external outreach and corporate crisis management planning. Over the past year, the association has been designing a performance assessment and verification system for these performance areas, as its members prepare to move external verification of their performance in 2007. The initiative and its evolution, as well as the challenges faced in developing a verification system applicable to an entire sector will be examined.

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.

The selected mining method for the Rodeo lower Zone is slot and slash. Initial design indicated that the stope height should be limited to a maximum of 18 m, thus six levels were needed to extract the ore. Higher stope height in the Rodeo Lower Zone means less development thus less capital required to extract the available reserves. It was proposed to eliminate one level by establishing 30 m and 24 m level intervals. To ensure that no stability problems will be encountered by eliminating one level, a Matthew analysis, based on diamond drill core information, was performed for the Lower Rodeo Ore Body. In addition, comparisons between the rock mass quality of Meikle Main Zone below 1825 L and Meikle East Zone between 1600 L and 1750 L with the rock mass quality of the Lower Rodeo were made

"Potash processing in Canada commenced on a commercial scale in 1962. Over the last 25 years it has grown into a world-class industry with many advances in processing technology. As it is a relatively young industry, many more advances can be expected. Unlike much of the mineral production in Canada, potash is sold as a range of finished products. The processing involves potash recovery and finishing in about equal amounts in terms of the effort of processing. Environmental concerns are not insignificant and are being treated uniquely in some areas. Research and development efforts, while not carried out on a large scale, are attacking industry problems on a wide front.THE INDUSTRYThe Canadian potash industry has 12 producing mines, 10 in Saskatchewan and 2 in New Brunswick. The total productive capacity of the industry is 18,300,000 tonnes of products per year. At capacity, the industry 1•ill process the equivalent of about 53,000,000 tonnes of ore per year. Plants range in size from 8,000 tonnes to 24,000 tonnes of feed per operating day. In product terms this is from 2,500 to 3,500 tonnes of products per day.Of the 12 mines, 11 are conventional underground mining operations with potash recovery principally by flotation supplemented by crystallization and one is a solution mine where mining is achieved by dissolving the potash and salt in underground caverns and then treating the solution in an evaporator/ crystallizer circuit. In all plants there is commonality of unit operation in the product screening and compaction sections. There are three principal ores being treated in the conventional plants. Boom pennants are manufactured from both wire rope or galvanized bridge strand.The most prominent ropes for dragline excavators are hoist, drag, and dump ropes. Some dragline excavators have boom hoist ropes, and most large dragline excavators have a boom suspension system using galvanized bridge strand."

"The maintenance strategies in the mining industry are changing from operative and periodic inspection strategies to a condition-based, predictive maintenance strategy centred in vibration analysis plus complementary techniques. Condition monitoring can also help to improve availability by being able to pinpoint and diagnose problems on operating machinery at an early stage. This reduces unscheduled downtime and production losses.However, in mining, for shovels operating in transient modes, with variable load and/or speed, the FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) standard approach is not directly applicable for analysis. This work illustrates how spectral order analysis and new transforms, called time-frequency transforms (TFT), allow us to monitor the shovel when it is working. Some practical examples showing the application of these analysis techniques to occasional vibrations measured on hoist and crowd transmission of a shovel are also presented. It is shown that at present, it is possible to carry out the vibration monitoring in the mining shovel while it is working, therefore avoiding the high cost of a loss of production which can occurr in traditional monitoring, where the measurement is taken while the shovel is out of production."

The energy required to fragment a rock is proportional to the increase in the fracture surface area and hence is proportional to the rock?s surface area. In comminution, the slope of the linear relationship between size reduction ratio and specific energy is usually defined as grindability. Another definition of grindability based on newly created specific surface area and specific energy is introduced. The two definitions for grindability reflect the grindability properties of rocks and can be used to measure of the efficiency of mills or crushers. The feed particle size distribution influences the energy needed to comminute the rock. For a given ratio of average feed size to product size, the smaller feed size requires more energy.

This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection / installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation, control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background/experience, and the essential backing/ support of the operations management team together leading to higher value delivery. Robust solutions can be realized, considerably minimizing process variation, thus leading to process optimization. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimized process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? The Otjikoto Mine, owned at 90% by B2Gold Corporation, is located 300 km north of Namibia’s capital city of Windhoek. The reserves from the open pit mine, estimated at 25.9 million tons with an average grade of 1.28 g/t Au, contain gangue minerals, pyrite and pyrrhotite, and have an estimated 10 year mine life. The feasibility study included an optimisation of gold leaching using CSTR for the original design. The results of the test work were used to establish the design criteria. Gravity tails from three composites (drill cores), representing the major ore types, were used. The XR3 sample (gravity tails) contained 0.32 g/t Au, while the XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples (used for variability) contained, respectively, 0.30 g/t Au, and 0.47 g/t Au. The optimum leaching conditions were: a pre-treatment of 7 h at pH 10.5 with 100 g/t lead nitrate, DO > 5 ppm followed by cyanidation at 300 ppm NaCN, pH 10.0, DO > 5 ppm for 48 h. The gold extraction was 91.5% (97.2% overall extraction gravity/leach) and the cyanide addition was 0.57 kg/t NaCN. Increasing the DO to 16 ppm did not show any economic benefits. No pre-treatment or a 4-h pre-treatment reduced the gold leaching kinetics. The XR2 and XR1 gravity tails samples had gold extractions of 92.9% and 92.3%, respectively. At the plant scale, an 11 h pre-treatment is used followed by 42 h cyanidation with 250 ppm NaCN and an average DO of 8 ppm and 230 g/t lead nitrate in 2016. The cyanide addition was 0.49 kg/t NaCN. The commercial operation started on February 28th, 2015. The overall gold recovery and production were 98.4% and 145,696 ounces for 2015 and 98.1% and 166,286 ounces for 2016. It was found that retention times, gold content of leach residues and cyanide addition are comparable for the lab and the plant. Details of the Otjikoto process flowsheet are discussed in this paper along with the results of the lab leach optimisation test program and the plant leach circuit performance and improvements.

"BHP-Billiton’s Minera Escondida Limitada, in Chile, is one of the world’s largest copper producers. It treats a combined 10,500 tph of copper ore through its two concentrators: Los Colorados and Laguna Seca. The performance of the rougher circuit at each concentrator was measured and analysed using the JKTech flotation optimisation methodology. This involved developing a flotation model for each concentrator based on cell operating parameters (for example bubble surface area flux and froth recovery) and feed ore floatability characteristics. The rougher circuit performance was evaluated in terms of traditional measures, such as grade and recovery. The operation was also analysed using the measured cell operating parameters and ore floatability and the effect of these with regard to performance (grade / recovery) was assessed.This paper presents a comparison of the rougher circuit at each concentrator in terms of these parameters. The main differences in rougher circuit performance between the two plants were attributed to differences in feed ore floatability characteristics and froth recovery. The comparison highlighted opportunities where performance improvements could be made. The study also showed the usefulness of separating the flotation process into easily measurable subprocesses to further identify the different mechanisms occurring in each rougher circuit. Traditional measures like grade and recovery are useful for monitoring flotation operation but this data lacks the depth to determine the root cause behind operational issues. Determining the operating parameters and ore floatability provides the operating plant metallurgist better tools to assess and manage these issues."
