"The revamp of critical process assets that require a significant plant outage (shutdown) presents a unique and demanding set of challenges for plant operators. They are executed in a more complex Brownfield environment, typically with limited working space and often involve unknown conditions or scope. For plant operators, such a project is often a high cost event both in terms of opportunity cost of lost production and the resource cost of labor and materials. It can also be a high risk event in terms safety, environment, and future plant reliability/availability. This impacts current and future performance or Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). In our experience, the sequential nature of the EPCM approach does not provide the proper framework to facilitate the level of coordination, stakeholder cooperation and detailed planning required to adequately address the construction and shutdown complexity of a critical asset revamp projects. This paper proposes a more integrated approach to handling shutdown revamps of critical assets. Its main thesis is to involve the key performing stakeholder groups early in the project lifecycle (engineering team, procurement team, construction team and plant operations) to form an integrated shutdown management team that is focused on ensuring delivered results are aligned with project objectives. In this model, the construction team executing the shutdown/construction is preparing the detailed shutdown/construction planning concurrently with detailed engineering and procurement planning. This allows construction/shutdown requirements to influence engineering and procurement, with the desire to optimize safety, speed, quality and cost. The paper also discusses how to overcome the procurement hurdle in applying such an approach. The outcome of this integrated approach is better planning, coordination, communication and alignment between the project stakeholders, a shutdown/construction driven planning approach that more fully addresses the challenges of these projects and delivered results that are aligned with project objectives."

This study presents a neural network approach to modelling the liberation of gold bearing ores. A complete mineralogical analysis of unmilled and milled ores, including gold deportment and gangue content are used as inputs to a self-organising neural net which generates order preserving topological maps. The arrangement and shapes of these clusters are coupled to unmilled free gold data to predict gold liberation in milled ores (absolute error: 4.2%). Moreover, the self-organising maps were diagnostic of the quality of data used, indicating that the relationship between particle size and gangue material content requires further investigation.

The campaign life of furnaces in the copper making industry is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper monitoring and assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and their refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a typical fitness-for-service assessment of a rotary vessel shell in order to extend the campaign life of copper making furnaces and enhance safety. The furnace refractory management system involves a comprehensive audit and monitoring program which has been successfully applied to several copper flash smelting furnaces over the past 15 years. The fitness for service assessment provides a methodology to estimate the remaining life of the steel components by evaluating the existing damage and future damage rate based on the historical survey data. The above practices can provide the operator with cost savings by extending the vessel campaign life in lieu of implementing more rigorous refractory lining and shell audits. INTRODUCTION Primary copper smelting is generally divided into two categories of flash smelting and open bath smelting. There are many different types of vessels that can be used to convert the copper concentrate to blister copper including, flash, Mitsubishi process, TSL (ISA/Ausmelt), SKS Bottom Blowing, Anode and Teniente/Noranda furnaces, reactors, and Peirce Smith converters. Each vessel has its own complex and intense environment which requires careful refractory and steel design to withstand the severe thermomechanical and thermochemical attacks within its campaign life. The campaign life of furnaces is greatly affected by damage caused by normal operation cycling and abnormal conditions. Proper assessment of the existing conditions and safe remaining life of the vessels and/or refractory lining is key to prevent an unplanned early replacement. This paper presents an industry-proven refractory management program as well as a fitness-for- service assessment methodology to estimate the remaining campaign life of copper making furnaces resulting in cost savings and enhanced safety of the operating vessels.

"Sulfide ore processing is characterized by significant losses of metals, for example, with flotation tailings. Therefore, flotation tailings can present an important source of metals. The treatment of flotation tailings is a technological issue due to low content of valuable metals (e.g. copper and zinc) and high iron content. The goal of the present work was to investigate extraction of base metals and gold from old flotation tailings containing 17% iron, 0.26% copper, 0.22% zinc, and 0.7 g/t gold. Chemical leaching in columns with 0.5 to 10% sulfuric acid solutions and bioleaching in air-lift percolators were used for the extraction of base metals. 1% H2SO4 provided high extraction of base metals and best selectivity. Recovery of copper and zinc reached 35% and 40%. Increasing H2SO4 concentration did not lead to significant increase in base metals extraction, but led to increased iron concentration in the pregnant solutions. The 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residues were used for further experiments. Acid leaching and bioleaching did not result in significant increase in base metals recovery. Leaching of the residue with 10% H2SO4 provided extraction of 4% copper and 20% zinc, and bioleaching for 100 days provided extraction of 16% copper and 12% zinc. The recovery of gold by cyanidation from the flotation tailings, the 1% H2SO4 leaching solid residue and residue of two-step acid leaching were 50, 49, and 65%, respectively. The results suggest that acid leaching can be effective approach for treatment of old flotation tailings.INTRODUCTIONAbout 80% of base metals (copper, nickel, zinc) are produced through pyrometallurgical treatment of sulfide ores. Mining and metallurgical treatments of sulfide ores are presently characterized by significant losses of non-ferrous and precious metals into the various wastes. For example, flotation of sulfidic ores yields formation sulfide flotation tailings. These wastes pose a problem not just because of their sheer volume, but some of them may affect local ecosystems. Nowadays, mining and metallurgical wastes can be considered as technogenical source of base metals."

"Abstract - The Sudbury Structure consists of three major components: 1) the Sudbury Basin; 2) the Sudbury Igneous Complex which surrounds the basin as an elliptical collar; and 3) an outer zone of shatter-coned and intensely brecciated footwall rocks. Although the Sudbury Event which formed the structure may be unique, the area has, in fact, been shaped by a series of tectonic, magmatic and mineralization events which can be considered in terms of two Wilson cycles of continental extension and closure. The first cycle, from 2500 to 1700 Ma, included the following events: doming (uplift of Levack Gneiss Complex); NE-SW extension (Matachewan dikes); N-S to NW-SE rifting (faults, mafic intrusions, sedimentation, and Ni-Cu-PGE and U mineralization); NW-SE extension (Nipissing diabase, and Ni-Cu-PGE, Ag, Co mineralization); and NW-SE and NE-SW closure (Penokean Orogeny, 1900 to 1700 Ma) with superimposed meteorite impact (1850 Ma, Ni-Cu- PGE, Zn-Cu-Pb deposits). The second cycle, from 1700 to 1000 Ma, included: N-S extension (alkali metasomatism, Au); N-S extension (hornblende diabase dikes along the Murray fault set); NNESSW extension (olivine diabase dikes); NE-SW extension (Fecunis Lake fault set); and NW-SE closure (Grenvillian Orogeny).The rich and diverse Ni-Cu-PGE and subordinate Zn-Pb-Cu and Au mineralization of the Sudbury region is related to endogenic and impact-triggered crustal extension and magmatism. "This paper compares the behaviour of gold and ore in the grinding circuit of Hemlo Mines Ltd. Particular attention is given to grinding kinetics, classification behaviour, and liberation. For grinding kinetics, laboratory grinding of gold flakes and silica, 840 µm to 1200 µm in size (14/20 mesh), was also performed to provide a standard for comparison and to study in a controlled environment the mechanisms of breakage, folding , smearing and impacting.Grinding kinetics were characterized at laboratory scale with breakage and selection functions. The breakage function showed that 75% of gold disappearing from the 840 µm to 1200 µm class reported to the 600 µm to 840 µm; this figure is much higher than for silica (46%) or most other minerals, and implies that comparatively fewer fine fragments are produced from the breakage of gold flakes, on account of gold's malleability. The selection function of silica was four times that of gold. At plant scale, the ratio of the selection function of ore and gold increased from 6 for at 50 urn to JOO pm to 20 at 500 um to 1000µm.Observation of original flakes and their fragments with the scanning electron microscope showed that the main mechanism of ""grinding"" from the 840 µm to 1200 µm to the 600 µm to 840 µm class was folding rather than actual breakage. This was confirmed by a measure of individual flake weight. The postulated breakage cycle is that relatively globular flakes become increasingly serrated through grinding; they can then regain their original shape through folding and reflattening into cylindrical and spherical shapes, as the majority does; however, some fragments will at this point undergo actual breakage. Photograhic evidence is presented to support the proposed mechanisms.Smearing of gold unto silica was observed when silica was ground after a gold, and embedding of silica into gold flakes when gold was ground after a silica. Both mechanisms occur whenever gold and harder minerals are jointly ground, and result in ""unliberation"" of gold. It is postulated that smearing of gold onto other minerals plays an important role in explaining how gravity recovery can increase over-all gold metallurgy, especially when used ahead of flotation.Classification of gold in the primary hydro cyclones takes place at a much finer cut-size than ore, 20 µm vs 57 µm. This and the slower grinding kinetics result in high gold circulating loads in the primary loop, 6700%, and a gold content in the primary cyclone underflow (PCUF) is twenty-four times that of the ore. The gold size distribution for primary cyclone overflow is much finer than that of the ore, although they are essentially similar in the PCUF.Liberation, or more accurately ""gravity recoverability"", was assessed with a 7.5 cm (3 in.) Knelson concentrator. It varied between the thirties for the primary mill discharge and two cyclone overflows, to highs of 89% and 92% for the PCUF and secondary mill discharge."

The jet piercing process, developed by Union Carbide Canada Ltd., is well established in blasthole production in open-pit mining. By this process, holes can be drilled, shaped and chambered for blasting. In suitable ore or rock formations, a considerable cost reduction can be achieved. This paper reviews the equipment used, relates how cost savings may be accomplished, and concludes with a mention of the most recent developments in this field. JET piercing and chambering, a process for blasthole production in open-pit mining, leads, in many instances, to improved drilling and blasting techniques and costs. It is a method of working rock with a supersonic flame and, to be most effective, depends upon a characteristic of the rock called spallability. Spalling, in this case, is the breaking away of surface particles from the rock body due to stresses caused by the thermal shock of the jet flame. Various rock properties contribute to this action, but, in general, the harder the rock the greater the spallability and the more effective and economical is the jet process. The jet process has the capability to drill, ream, shape and chamber holes for blasting.

Nickel-base single-crystal superalloys are used for gas turbine airfoil applications due to their excellent high temperature properties. A good understanding of the mechanical response of these alloys under different temperature and loading conditions is essential for modeling their behavior. In this study, the low cycle fatigue behavior of CMSX 2 oriented with the loading axis along [001] was investigated under zero-compression strain-controlled loading at 1100°C. The experiments were performed with or without a two-minute dwell (hold) in compression. The microstructure before and after testing was analyzed to understand the deformation characteristics including the effect of dwell.

"Cominco Copper Division's Valley Mine is located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia, approximately 275 km by air northeast of Vancouver. The nearest towns are Logan Lake, located IS km to the east and Ashcroft, located about 50 km to the northwest.Preproduction stripping of rock and overburden at the Valley Mine's Lake Zone Pit began in mid-1982 following a decision to discontinue mining in the adjacent Jersey Pit. Equipment and mining methods were carried over from the Bethlehem Copper operations which, with Valley Copper Mines, were merged into Cominco in December 1982.Blasting practices, as carried over from the Bethlehem pits, were designed to provide the fine fragmentation required to meet production requirements using the Bethlehem crusher. However, after mining the first few benches of the Lake Zone Pit, it became apparent that overblasting at the pit limits was causing a number of bench failures, as well as contributing to an over-all reduction of the material strength of the rock mass forming the southwest wall of the pit.With present ultimate pit plans calling for the southwest wall to be as high as 300 m, Valley staff realized that potential slope stability problems should be dealt with as early as possible. This philosophy would enable experimentation on phase pit walls in order to attain the optimum slope angle on the ultimate pit wall.As part of an over-a ll slope stability program, a controlled blasting program was initiated at the Lake Zone Pit in March 1983. In this program, Valley engineering and production staff worked together with Golder Associates in establishing design criteria and evaluating the results. This program resulted in a marked improvement in the soundness of pit walls while maintaining the required degree of fragmentation."

It responds to the desires of the parties for a resolution that is fair, binding and enforceable and is guided more by pragmatism, efficiency, effectiveness and equality than by a need to comply with the legal procedures and practices of any single country or jurisdiction. Arbitration is particularly well suited for the resolution of disputes pertaining to international commercial agreements which are often present in the metallurgical sector. This paper provides a simplified outline of the features and advantages of arbitration as well as commentary regarding certain prerequisites in order for arbitration to be binding and enforceable.

An efficient and accurate three-dimensional (3-D) contact detection algorithm is of vital importance in large-scale computing of discontinuous deformation analysis. The contact detection algorithm takes up a large proportion of the whole calculation time because of the increasing calculation number in three-dimensional case. For block systems which consist of convex polyhedrons, the efficiency and accuracy of the contact detection algorithm is a great challenge. The presented contact detection algorithm in discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA) method is carried out in three phases: the global neighbour searching, the local contact type searching and the contact transferring. A contact detection algorithm for 3-D DDA is presented with some improvements on the three phases. A grid-based global neighbour searching algorithm is used to eliminate unnecessary neighbour blocks to the exact number. The local contact type searching includes two steps. In the first step, the common plane method is used to determine the contact type between convex polyhedrons. In the second step, the contact pairs detected by the common plane method are divided into four basic types. In the third phase, the four contact types are transferred into two basic contact types, vertex-to-face contact type and edge-to-edge contact type, which are managed in a uniform procedure. Three verification examples are calculated, the results show that the proposed algorithm based on the three contact detection phases is robust and efficient.

Hydrocarbon fluid inclusions entrapped in diagenetic minerals may be used to constrain hydrocarbon exploration models in two aspects. First, the distribution of different types of hydrocarbon inclusions in different tectonostratigraphic domains, and their relationships with organic matter maturation levels may reflect a regionalscale variation in the thermal regimes of the hydrocarbon systems. Second, the relative timing of hydrocarbon inclusions in the diagenetic history may provide constraints on the evaluation of reservoir potential. This paper summarizes the distribution of hydrocarbon inclusions in four different Paleozoic tectonostratigraphic domains in eastern Canada, discusses its implications on hydrocarbon systems in the different domains, and finally provides two examples to show how the relative timing of hydrocarbon inclusions may be used in the evaluation of reservoir potential. Oil inclusions mainly occur in host rocks that are within the oil zone, although some are found in units in the condensate zone. Light hydrocarbon inclusions occur in the dry gas zone, and methane inclusions were found from dry gas zone to anchimetamorphism zone. This correlation between hydrocarbon inclusions and host rock maturation implies that the hydrocarbons were derived from source rocks having a maturation level broadly similar to the host rocks. Although the Paleozoic rocks are generally relatively poor in reservoir quality, the two examples provided in this paper show that in some stratigraphic units, significant secondary porosities could have existed prior to some hydrocarbon migration events, thus favoring the accumulation of hydrocarbons.

"The application of pneumatically-assisted fluidized bed flotation, specifically the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology, has found widespread use in non-sulphide processing (particularly phosphate, potash and coal) for the recovery of coarse particles. In gold processing, centrifugal gravity circuits and flash flotation cells are typically employed for the recovery of coarse and near-size liberated gold which tends to accumulate in recycled grinding streams due to bypass to the classifying cyclone underflow streams owing to the higher specific gravity of these gold particles. Early removal of this gold from the grinding circuits contributes toward the reduction of downstream processing losses as a result of overgrinding and particle shape deformation in the case of flotation processing, longer leach residence times in the case of extractive processing, and surface occlusions in the case of both flotation and extractive processing. Furthermore, recovery to bullion attracts higher payment terms by way of comparison to concentrate sales in the case of copper-gold concentrators. This paper assesses the application of pneumatically assisted fluidized bed flotation for the recovery of coarse liberated gold through the analysis of piloting data generated from the operation of a continuously operated 16 inch ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit treating a sized coarse grinding circuit stream. The paper presents the stage recovery by size performance of the ERIEZ HydroFloatTM unit together with quantitative gold deportment analysis to demonstrate the efficiency with which gold was recovered during this pilot campaign and then compared to more conventional processing units – centrifugal gravity and conventional flotation.INTRODUCTION Newcrest Mining Limited (NML) has identified that an opportunity exists for improving the recovery of coarse composite particles at its current operations, both as a means for improving overall recovery and as an opportunity for early gangue rejection. As such, Newcrest Mining Limited has taken an interest in the application of pneumatically-assisted, fluidized-bed flotation i.e. ERIEZ HydroFloatTM technology. This interest dates back to 2011 with sighter testwork carried out on their Australian-held ore bodies (Kohmuench et al, 2013). Newcrest continues to assess ERIEZ HydroFloatTM potential for coarse composite recovery and, in the case of the topic of this paper, coarse gold recovery based on examples in the literature which demonstrate the efficiency of this technology in this regard (Carmona Franco et al., (2015); Miller et al., (2016); and Kohmuench et al, 2013)."

This paper describes results of an investigation of fracture during tube expansion of 5052 and 5754 aluminum seam-welded tubes to optimize the forming of aluminum tubes during hydroforming. The tubes were produced in laboratory by press forming of tubular blanks and pilot-scale high frequency induction welding. The effect of property mismatch between the weld and base metal has been investigated. The material work-hardening was obtained by roll forming of sheet blanks in the 0-temper and H32 temper condition. The results showed that a significant work-hardening can be present in aluminum tube without causing weld fracture during tube expansion. The work-hardening increases the yield-strength mismatch between base metal and weld. Annealing reduces the hardness of base metal leading to more uniform deformation during tube expansion. As a result the occurrence of weld fracture is reduced. The study showed significant deformation of the welds during tube expansion. Weld thinning can be as large as parent-material thinning before fracture. To avoid fracture at the weld joint, good formability and high yield strength of the weld is needed. FEM simulation showed that minimizing the width of the weld joint can reduce thinning of the weld.

"Fractures induced by folds are pivotal in hydrocarbon exploration, ground water transport and harnessing of geothermal energy. This is because of the need to predict and understand fracture propagation in reservoirs which have folded rock formations. Despite its prominence, there is a lack of reliable numerical models for simulating fractures resulting from rock folding. This is partially due to the difficulty involved in fracture modelling. As a contribution to fold-fracture modelling, this work applies a coupled plasticity-damage model to rock fracturing and anticlinal folds. Parametric studies on a single folded layer give insight into the fold formation and behaviour. The anisotropic continuum damage model which considers both tension and compression is formulated using the power damage evolution law. For ease in formulation, strain equivalence hypothesis is adopted whereby the strain is the same for both damaged and undamaged configurations. Lubliner plasticity yield criterion is adopted for plastic deformation. The model is coded in Abaqus user subroutine UMAT and is applicable to quasi-brittle materials.INTRODUCTIONThe understanding of fractures in the earth’s crust helps in the prediction, evaluation and characterization of fractured reservoirs, whether they are petroleum, geothermal or underground water reservoirs. This is partly because reservoir permeability and stability are dependent on fracture properties (Nelson, 2001). To achieve this, various approaches have been developed to analyze reservoir rock fractures. These could be grouped into (a) discrete approaches – where the rock mass is represented by a finite number of well-defined components and (b) continuum approaches – where the mathematical assumption of an infinitesimal element is made (Jing, 2003). Ivanova (Ivanova, 1998) comprehensively studied fracture systems in nature and highlighted folds as one of the major geologic settings that produce fractures. Naturally occurring folds in reservoirs sometimes compound fracture analysis. It might not be clear whether the fractures formed before, during or after rock folding.
