Welina mai to the 40th Underwater Mining Institute, UMI 2011 - Marine Minerals: Recent Innovations in Technology. Since the first conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, the UMI Founder Professor Robby Moore always insisted on actively seeking the participation of industry, academia, and government. History has proven the wisdom of this approach, which is probably the key to its survival for so many years. The UMI is very much influenced by the cyclical pressures of the minerals commodity markets. When minerals demand and prices are rising rapidly, industrial participation in the Institute dominates the agenda, and participants share optimistic and aggressive views of the commercial prospects of the day. When metals prices are falling and world economies lethargic, academic experts continue to provide guidance and breakthroughs in the concepts and practices of exploration, technology, and environmental protection. Throughout the ups and downs, government participants provide a stabilizing force with conservative and environmentally sensitive policy statements, patient development efforts with long-term objectives, authoritative resource assessments and, sometimes, much needed regulatory clarity.

The deep-sea ocean floor offers a great potential for mineral resources. The evaluation of these resources is both time consuming and costly and require as any resource evaluation data; geodata. The collection of hard data, physical samples, is of course preferred because the associated uncertainty is low. However, the collection of soft data or image derived data can offer a valuable supplement. In this paper image derived nodule uncertain abundance data from an area in the Pacific is utilized. Implementing these uncertain data improves the estimation when the quality of the estimation is measured using the classification indicators like the kriging standard deviation, the relative prediction error, the slope of regression and the weight of the mean. It is concluded that uncertain data is better than no data. INTRODUCTION The deep-sea offers vast mineral resources (Cathles (2011), Hannington et al. (2011), Hannington (2013), Singer (2014)). A mineral resource can according to increasing geological confidence be classified as an inferred, an indicated or a measured resource. The classification is performed by a competent- or qualified person and is dependent on the amount, quality and characteristic of available geodata. The competent person must have at least five years of experience relevant to both the style of mineralisation, the type of deposit and the performed task. Typical examples of a “task” is for example resource estimation and classification or planning- and execution of exploration activities and presentations of the results. The competent person must also be a member or a fellow of a professional organisation and thereby be bound by reporting code (-s) that defines minimum standards, recommendations and guidelines for public reporting.

Various natural, commercial, engineering and operational factors govern the evolution of approaches taken in the exploration for Seafloor Massive Sulphides (SMS) and in delineating the resource. These stages are prerequisites to the proposed mining of SMS deposits. This paper presents and analyses these factors from the view of an SMS exploration company that is pioneering the exploration of this rich alternative source of zinc, copper and gold. Current exploration practices developed by Marine Scientific Research (MSR) workers for SMS deposits are expected to give way to industry-generated methods as the SMS exploration industry gathers momentum. The exploration process falls into three phases that are described below: Prospecting (locating targets), Indicating Resources, and Measuring Mineral Resources Considerable streamlining of the SMS exploration process will accelerate the rate of discovery. The economics of SMS mining are projected to be superior to comparable terrestrial mining operations in both operating cash cost and capital terms.

Bottom sediment sampling by means of a box corer, as a direct method of deep seabed exploration for polymetallic nodules, is the most comprehensive way to obtain various types of geological information on points forming a network of stations. However, direct information is lacking from areas separating those stations and has to be approximated by interpolation or extrapolation, which leads to uncertainties. Sediment sampling with a gravity or piston corer can provide information on the superficial, up to 4 m thick, part of the sedimentary cover. As opposed to box coring, gravity or piston coring provides no information on nodule abundance. Information for unsampled areas can be gained by application of remote techniques of exploration. The techniques of choice in visualising nodule-rich fields, nodule-free areas, hard rock outcrops and other obstacles for seafloor mining involve using sonar and continuous deep sea (CDS) camera. Seafloor mapping can be rendered with two major sonar types: the side scan sonar used to obtain seafloor imagery and multibeam sonar for bathymetric data; the two types are usually combined and work with an intermediate frequency profiler. Photo-profiling by means of a deep sea towed camera provides a series of seafloor photographs, each supplemented with information on the area covered by each frame, including the nodule abundance. Remote techniques have been quite frequently applied by the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization (IOM) in nodule field exploration. Recently, geoacoustic techniques (side scan sonar + profiler) and CDS were applied for exploration of IOM?s first prime area H11 (5372 km2) on 6 transects. During the IOM-2009 cruise, a total of 295 km of geoacoustic transects and 344 km of photo-transects were surveyed. The data obtained were processed with the aid of earlier information produced by multibeam sonar surveys. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of remote techniques, particularly with regard to application of the towfish device, for geological and geotechnical applications in exploration for polymetallic nodules.

Ocean mining has a number of problems which are critical to its development: ? Political hurdles on national and international stages ? The worldwide economic situation, with the possibliity of a recession ? Financial difficulties in funding further work ? Technical problems for the development of ocean mining and transport subsystems ? Demands for technology transfer This paper touches the last two points and provides some thoughts for discussion and creative objectification. The many technical problems of ocean mining will be identified and some proposed solutions will be investigated relative to the state-of-the-art technology of ocean mining and nodule transport. An outlook into the future attempts identification of the steps necessary to eventually develop components for workable systems that are not only technically but also economically feasible.

"The paper provides the principle considerations for a novel vehicle class within the scope of the project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM). The main idea for these ships is to create a highly modular building block system for the global layout. This building block system allows for a mission-dependent module assembly. For the purpose of deep sea mining for example, the range of tasks reaches from multipurpose transportation and exploration missions to supporting tasks in up to 5000 m depth, e.g. energy supply. Topics covered in this paper are related to potential missions for these vehicles, the modular layout and the structural layout of a separate block module. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the leading economic nations, Germany is in need of energy and raw materials. In the 21st century, marine resources are a prominent and promising alternative to land based resources. However, there are challenges that need to be considered. Rough and often poorly plannable weather conditions prevail distant to the marginal seas. Ice coverage makes offshore services inefficient and costly in Polar Regions. The average ocean depth of 3500m and the associated environment conditions cause difficulties in fulfilling tasks in the deep sea. The project Large Modifiable Underwater Mothership (MUM) [1] will enable more efficient solutions in order to accomplish undersea duties and services in harsh conditions.This joint project comprises workshares from Atlas Elektronik, EvoLogics, thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the University of Rostock and the Technische Universität Berlin. The principle idea of the project is the conception of a novel vehicle class. With highly modular autonomous underwater vehicles, this class will be capable of undertaking a variety of different tasks. Classically engineered vehicle structures will be split into single basis modules which can be flexibly assembled with specialized mission modules to form potent systems for individual assignments. The group of basis modules consists of units for navigation, vehicle control, propulsion and energy generation via fuel cell technology. The potential reusability of system relevant modules leads to a significant cost reduction and to shortened development periods compared with conventional vehicle concepts. The integration of newly designed additional mission modules is possible with little effort and a separate commercialization of single modules is feasible."

The emerging marine minerals exploration and mining industry is currently focused mainly on the technical elements for its success such as developing exploration and mining technologies. However, in one sense, the technical challenges are quite soluble whereas those arising in the fields of the environment and public opinion could present this new generation of miners with problems that are far more difficult to overcome. One need only look at the issues currently faced by mining projects on land to see how powerful the new forces of so-called ?civil society? are in stopping mineral developments in many countries. From the geographic viewpoint, there are many countries but there is just one ocean, so the impacts experienced by any one operation are likely to have pervasive repercussions throughout the industry. A well-oiled NGO development protest lobby will see leverage in resisting this new industry and will seize on the single-ocean angle. The Australian Minerals Industry has established a voluntary Code for Environmental Management that provides an active and valuable model for satisfying the ?court of public opinion? and in delivering economic results to industry that are in current jargon, sustainable. An explanation of the Code for Environmental Management, and the reasons behind 44 companies representing more than 300 operations and 85% of Australia?s sizeable mineral production being signatory to it will be given. Participants see it as a means to future shareholder wealth.

Diamond production from the reworked beach and river channel gravels along the west coasts of South Africa and Namibia is well known throughout the world, not only for the exceptional quality of the diamonds, but also for the sheer scope of the operations. To date an estimated 140 million carats have been produced from the resource worth some US$40 billion in today's money terms. It is therefore not surprising that it didn't take long before the attention turned towards the possible extension of this valuable diamond resource on similar submerged beaches in the adjacent territorial waters of South Africa and Namibia. This has proved to be a very successful move as the marine production in Namibia today constitutes 48% of that country's total diamond production. Although small scale recovery of diamonds from the sea commenced in the 1950's, the first large scale production came from the operations of the Texan entrepreneur, Sam Collins, in the 1960's. The De Beers Group, which took over Sam Collin's operations in 1969 had all the concession areas, as well as the financial and human resources to tackle the new mining frontier in the correct way by years of data gathering (ie diamond reserves and seafloor terrain studies) before commencing with large scale mining operations in the 1980's. Those who are familiar with the beach mining operations along the South African and Namibian west coasts will have appreciation for the daunting task of surgically removing the payable portion of diamond deposits from the non-payable material on the one hand, and the complex uneven fractured and gullied bed-rock floor of the deposits on the other hand. Not to mention the additional complexities of large boulders and hard calcretised diamond gravel layers (conglomerate) which are sometimes associated with the deposits. It was a natural development that the sea diamond mining operations were approached with the known information of the land operations, attempting to duplicate land mining operations in the sea, but taking cognisance of the variations of the terrain in the different areas. For instance, we encounter the following variations, and combinations, off the Namibian Coast. ? Close inshore - holocene sand cover often masks large areas of potentially diamondiferous gravels. ? "Mineral deposits found near seafloor hydrothermal venting are of great economic interest. Valuable metals such as gold, copper, zinc, and other polymetallic sulfides are found in appreciable grades in seafloor massive sulfide (SMS) deposits associated with these vents. For mapping these deposits, electromagnetic prospecting is one geophysical method that is very useful because copper/gold rich deposits are highly conductive.Ocean Floor Geophysics (OFG) in 2008 developed the first EM system to successfully map the limits of conductive mineralization in a survey at the Solwara 1 deposit (Kowalczyk, 2008). Since then, towed coincident loop time domain systems have been developed by Waseda University (Nakayama and Saito, 2016) and have successfully detected known mineralization buried at 30m depth. Using a deep tow controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) array, very clear anomalies have been measured (Murton, 2017) over known mineralization at the TAG field on the mid-Atlantic ridge.In 2014 and 2015, OFG partnered with Fukada Salvage and Marine Co. Ltd. and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to map methane hydrate deposits off the coast of Japan using a towed controlled source electromagnetic (CSEM) system developed by Scripps. These hydrate deposits are resistive targets, and the Scripps system successfully mapped subsurface electrical resistivity distributions to depths of several 100 metres below the seafloor. OFG is attempting to extend the Scripps CSEM technology to map subsurface conductive SMS deposits to a similar range of depths below the seafloor."

"This paper explores the option of direct reduction smelting of the nodules from the German license area in the equatorial NE Pacific in a submerged arc furnace (SAF). An optimized slag design is proposed to separate the larger Mn-bearing stream from the valuable metals (i.e. Ni, Cu, Co, Mo). The slag optimization allows a maximum of Mn to be retained in the manganese-silicate slag on the one hand and a maximized metal recovery in a FeNiCuCo alloy on the other. This way, the goal is to make use of the complete nodules (“zero-waste”) instead of extracting only the metals Ni, Cu, and Co, which make up about 3 wt%. The process closely relates to the “Inco Process” by the Ocean Management Inc. (OMI) of the late 1970s, which was a consortium of INCO (International Nickel Company, CAN; today Vale Canada), Preussag AG & Metallgesellschaft AG (GER), DOMCO (JPN), and Sedco (USA). However, the manganese containing slag is investigated in more detail to recover FeMn, FeMnSi and/or SiMn. To optimize the process modern tools such as thermo-chemical modeling in FactSage™ have been used. [1,2]Polymetallic deep-sea manganese nodules may offer a decreased dependency of raw material imports for Germany and the EU. Currently, four European countries (United Kingdom, Belgium, Germany, and France and an Eastern European consortium (InterOcean Metal)) hold exploration licences for these nodules in international waters in the equatorial NE-Pacific. The license areas each cover 75 000 km2 of the seafloor and are located in the Clarion Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCZ) south east off Hawaii at water-depths between 4000 and 6000 m. The nodules may be used as a resource for industrially important metals such as Cu, Ni, Mn as well as for technology metals like Co, Mo, V and Zn. The average chemical composition of nodules from the German license area is presented in Table 1. [3,4]"

Ferromanganese crusts have traditionally been considered a potential ore for Co, whereas ferromanganese nodules have typically been considered a potential ore for Ni and Cu. However, both nodules and crusts sequester high concentrations of many metals (Table 1) from sediment pore waters and seawater, many of which are essential for high-tech applications. The resource potential of these rare and valuable metals is poorly known and they are the subject of considerable current research. The need for adequate and dependable supplies of these metals is essential for the development of new technologies. The rare-earth elements have recently received much attention in the scientific and popular press because of their use in so many high-tech applications and because more than 95% of the production comes from China (e.g., Service 2010); consequently, there is concern about the possibility of a significant decrease or even curtailment in exports from China. The lack of a primary source and the inadequate supply of Te have prohibited the development of a Cd-Te photovoltaic solar-cell industry (Hein et al. 2010). Inadequate supplies of many of the elements listed in Table 1 are limiting the development of key high-tech industries, forcing the use of alternative metals that [ ] may result in less efficiency or less favorable properties for a product. The rare-earth elements, Te, and other elements listed in Table 1 occur in high abundances in marine hydrogenetic and diagenetic ferromanganese deposits. Here, we look at the mechanisms by which these rare and valuable metals are incorporated into different genetic types of marine ferromanganese deposits.

The need for improved, high confidence estimates of nodule abundance to support mine permitting, detailed mine planning and mining and processing equipment design is evident. To date, physical samples represent the ?Gold Standard? for nodule abundance measurement, and are likely to remain as such. However, there are some interesting improvements in the area of 3-D scanning which, if marinized for operations at 6000m, may prove to be reliable alternative methods for mapping abundance over large areas particularly if calibrated or benchmarked with physical sample data. . Features of a high confidence physical sampling device, such as the 0.75m2 (0.86m on a side) box corer developed and successfully used by the Kennecott Group for exploration in the CCZ, take into account not only the accuracy in nodule sample collection but a host of other operability considerations which can mean the difference between a successful exploration cruise yielding high numbers of large area samples and one in which few, inaccurate, often inconclusive samples are collected (or, even worse, the sampler fails to grab any nodules for any number of reasons). The collection of physical samples at appropriate spacing within a mine area combined with more qualitative indications of nodule density such as can be obtained using acoustic backscatter should prove adequate for the near term objectives related to overall abundance appraisal or estimates of ?indicated? resource. Looking ahead, exploration cruises will need to yield increasing amounts of data to support development of higher confidence resource abundance estimates to support issuance of mining permits and detailed design of mining plans and equipment. Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0 - 17 bars, 0 - 25°C), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. The Indian offshore is promising with the occurrence of gas hydrates in a total of about 80,000 km2 area in the bathymetry range of 700 to 3000 m as reported in the earlier surveys. A gas hydrate stability zone thickness map was prepared using bathymetry and sea bottom temperatures along the continental margins of India. This map is expected to provide the depth window while searching for the ?Bottom Simulating Reflectors? (BSR). The study indicates that a minimum water depth of 750 m is required for the formation of gas hydrates, and above which the chances for gas hydrates occurrences appear minimal despite other favourable conditions like presence of sediment rich organic content etc. Single channel seismic analog records (Gupta et al., 1998) suggests that Western Continental Margin of India (WCMI) offers greater promise with to gas hydrate occurrences, particularly with regard to the number of BSRs traced on the analog records as compared to the earlier surveys.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are proven technologies used across market segments for survey, exploration and environmental monitoring tasks. When coupled with other autonomous platforms or sensor packages AUVs become part of an holistic system approach to exploration and environmental assessment and monitoring. Recent developments have seen AUVs deployed remotely with instantaneous access to data via the cloud. Our goal is to deliver the capabilities of each of these elements and present a cohesive data set with automated processing tools over a cloud based interface. nmanned Technology AUVs The HUGIN AUV System is the most commercially successful AUV ever built. Operated as a single vehicle, or as part of a swarm, HUGIN’s area coverage rate is unrivalled. Equipped with a comprehensive sensor package including Kongsberg’s synthetic aperture sonar, it collects a data set. Some of these data are processed in-mission to enable operators to readily access it when the vehicle is recovered. HUGIN is well suited to mining survey and exploration. Capable of reaching 6000 metre depths and conducting missions greater than 60 hours, HUGIN collects seabed sonar imagery, sub-bottom profiles, laser and camera images plus environmental data, with sensors running concurrently.

"INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

IHC Merwede is world market leader in the construction of specialist dredging equipment; it is a company with a rich history. The Netherlands is a coastal western country for which water management is a very important issue. Without the enclosure of the coastal areas with dikes and dunes almost two third of the Netherlands would be flooded. These activities are mostly performed by the dredging industry and are the foundation of the dredging industry as it is today. Besides land protection this industry also carries out infrastructure maintenance and performs land reclamation projects. In essence the dredging industry is specialized in horizontal excavation activities and operations in shallow waters with the purpose of gathering bottom sediments and disposing it at a different location. The development is that the activities are moving to deeper waters to a depth of up to 150m. A few years ago IHC Merwede received a request to perform the shallow water excavation techniques at a depth of approximately 2000 meters for the deep sea mining market. In response to the increasing number of requests for deep sea dredging and mining application solutions, IHC Merwede combined all of its activities in this sector to create a new, specially equipped operational unit, IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining (IHC DSDM).
