Placer/Nautilus currently holds approximately 15,000 km2 of tenements in PNG waters, either granted or under application, covering all reported seafloor hydrothermal vent occurrences.

The study of why and how life survives in the Extreme environment is a major frontier of science today. Extremophiles are organisms that require extreme environment including high temperature, pH, pressure and salt concentration, or low temperature, pH, nutrient concentration, or water availability. Their common habitats are geothermal vents, pools, lakes and craters of active volcanic regions, such as those of New Zealand, Japan, Kamchatka, Yellowstone USA or the hydrothermal vents of the ocean ridges and submarine volcanoes. These settings are accessible by foot, boat, helicopter, or submersibles. This presentation examines the geology, chemistry of geothermal sites of New Zealand, including the active volcano, White Island, Yellowstone, the submarine volcano Loihi in Hawaii, and sections of the mid-ocean ridges. Designing process and construction of Extremophilic sampling and bioreactor systems used in the study of Extremophiles will be discussed. The driving force behind the research of extremophiles is not only the fundamental science, but also biotechnological potential associated with these microorganisms and their cellular products. The University of Hawaii?s Marine Bioproducts and Engineering Center (MarBEC) is laying the foundations for such new industries.

In its first three years of operations, the in-house programs of the continental Shelf Division of the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC/CSD) have focused on the development of drill systems - technology and the improvement of techniques and applications of reconnaissance methods to marine mineral deposit characterization. Many of the technological advances made to date have been in direct response to specific requests from industry for drill systems needs, and from federal and state agencies seeking technical support for various research efforts. These cooperative programs have proven to be an extremely efficient and effective way for the MMTC to achieve some of the main program goals that were established for the organization at the outset: primarily, to encourage and assist U.S. industry in marine minerals research activities and to encourage cooperative work among research institutions, government agencies, and industry. Field observations and sampling of land-based and submarine hydrothermal and geothermal sites show a definite link between the geological setting, fluid geochemistry and specialized assemblages of microorganisms found at these settings. Three initial sites have been chosen as a basis for these studies. The first site is located on hydrothermal vents in pit craters on the submarine volcano Lo?ihi (Hawai?i) at a water depth of 1,300 meters. The second site is within the geothermally active vents, ponds and lakes of the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. The third site extends along the chain of volcanically and hydrothermally active volcanoes of the Kermadec-Tonga arc and back-arc system. To focus our work in New Zealand, a geomicrobiology field and experimental center has been established in Wairakei, New Zealand, with the relevant genomics, proteomic and bioinformatics work being conducted at the University of Hawaii. As part of a partnership between the University of Hawai?i, the Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences (GNS) and Victoria University of Wellington, a new interdisciplinary graduate course in geomicrobiology will be taught at Victoria University beginning next year. Since mineral-microbial interactions have been occurring for the past few billion years and these interactions have led to where one generates the other, a metal-bacteria research program has been initiated at GNS using arsenic-gold and other metal-bacterial interaction processes as a research objective. In this research program, we have completed the full genome of a new species of marine bacterium Idiomarina loihiensis from the Lo?ihi hydrothermal vents and identified specialized microorganisms living in pH 0.3 geothermal vent waters of White Island, New Zealand. The multidisciplinary approach to study the process of accumulation of metals in the hydrothermal systems clearly shows the path of how bacterial-mineral interaction can precipitate metal deposits. These studies will lead to new avenues for biomining, bioremediation and the understanding of the origins of life.

Remediation and restoration of offshore marine habitats is a relatively new concept with attempts in European regions largely being instigated by requirements of various strategic directives including Article 2 of the Habitats Directive (1992), the EC Water Framework Directive (2000, Article 2 of the OSPAR Convention (1992) and the developing European Marine Strategy Directive. A field experiment to establish the practicality of various options for rehabilitating the seabed on the cessation of dredging has been successfully set-up. The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the practicality and effectiveness of gravel seeding as a potential restorative method which could be applied at marine aggregate extraction sites following cessation of dredging. Zone 2, within Area 408 (offshore Humber) was chosen as the experimental site as there is some evidence for persistence of sand which may have resulted from screening operations at this site.

Following the recent award of a prospecting license by the New Zealand Government, Widespread Energy Ltd. (Widespread) is focused on the acceleration of its exploration program in order to bring a potential phosphorite deposit to market in the near future. Rock phosphate is the primary constituent of most fertilizers that are manufactured and distributed in New Zealand. Field trials in the 1980s demonstrated that direct application of rock phosphate can result in a more effective fertilizer (than super-phosphate) with less environmental damage from run-off. At present virtually all of the rock phosphate used by the New Zealand fertilizer industry (approximately 1 million tonnes a year) is imported from Morocco. In recent years price increases of up to 12 fold (peak of $500/t) with massive increases in freight costs have bought to the forefront the economic opportunity to in part replace foreign imports with a local source of phosphate. The Chatham Rise phosphate deposits are relatively well understood, having being discovered during the 1950?s and it is estimated that approximately 100 years supply (at current requirements) is present at shallow depths. An estimated 100 million tonnes of rock phosphate is present within the license area based on previous private and publicly funded research. Widespread has engaged several parties to assist in the exploration planning to confirm the resource potential. Widespread has commenced investigating the feasibility of recovering the phosphorite nodules off the sea floor, and presently has several conceptual technical solutions under consideration and will advance the discussions with potential contractors during the exploration phases. Widespread is acutely aware of its responsibilities to conduct both the exploration program and extraction of the rock phosphate, in a manner that causes minimal disruption to the marine environment. To this end, the National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA) ? a New Zealand Crown Research Institute has been engaged to assist in designing sampling and extraction methods that will minimize disruption to the seabed. All sampling and extraction activities are planned to be conducted with reference to the environmental guidelines published by the International Marine Minerals Society ?Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining.? Widespread is conducting its project with a background of changing regimes to both the allocation and environmental management of its activities.

"Ferromanganese crusts and nodules from the Amerasian basin of the Arctic Ocean are characterized by a unique composition compared to crusts formed elsewhere in the global ocean (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017). One of the most significant differences from global ocean crusts is the high detrital mineral content; mass balance calculations show that it may be as high as 35% in some samples (Hein et al., 2017).These Arctic Ocean Fe-Mn crusts also typically have three distinct megascopic layers, except for thin crusts; less commonly, four layers are noted for thick crusts. The age of initiation of Fe-Mn crust growth in the Amerasia Basin varies from 14.8 Myr to 0.7 Myr ago based on the Manheim and Lane-Bostwick (1988) Co chronometer, Be isotopes, and Th excess methods (Dausmann et al., 2015; Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017).Samples and MethodsFourteen Fe-Mn crust samples recovered on Russian and U.S. research cruises were chosen for analyses based on their morphology, composition, water depth, genetic type, and location in Amerasia Basin. Seven samples from four distant dredge sites along Mendeleev Ridge and seven samples from four locations on the Chukchi Borderland are included (Fig. 1). Dredge site water depths vary from 3850 to 2100 m with the deepest samples from the Chukchi Borderland. Many of the selected samples were described in previous publications (Konstantinova et al., 2017; Hein et al., 2017)."

The recent discoveries of hydrothermal activity in the ocean off New Zealand have created interest in the business community in the commercial possibilities of mining associated marine polymetallic sulfides. This interest is more so, as this hydrothermal activity is in much shallower depths, between 120 ? 1800 meters, than the typical 2400m in other parts of the oceans. Mining for other ocean deposits around NZ, such as phosphate nodules and off-shore deposits from gold bearing river beds is also attracting interest. The question is: - how can these deposits be mined without spending the enormous sums of money required for specialized mining technology? There are no dedicated off- the-shelf systems designed exclusively for underwater mining. Such systems require expensive development and manufacturing processes and then, are most probably designed for only one specific purpose. The costs involved place such equipment beyond the means of smaller entrepreneurial groups and only the big companies have the resources required. However, large companies are normally reluctant to take the risk of investing large sums of money into deep ocean projects. Australia and New Zealand, until recent times, have been somewhat isolated from European and North American technical resources - especially in the field of underwater technology. Over the past century such isolation has often led to solving problems with what has become locally known as ? ?the number 8 gauge wire method?. This approach to problem solving entails using whatever is available to get the job done and keep costs down. In the old days with NZ technology being mainly based around farming, a piece of No. 8 gauge fencing wire, although not designed for the purpose, was often used to fix various problems ? hence the term.

The Cook Islands are 15 islands located in the Southwest Pacific (between 8-23°S latitude and 156-167°W longitude). The total land area is about 200 km2. However, because its islands are widely scattered, the EEZ of the Cooks encompass an area about 2 million km2. The Cook Islands government exercises sovereignty and jurisdiction over its EEZ according to international law and convention as a member state under UNCLOS1. Accordingly, the Cook Islands government exercises full control over resources in its EEZ, including minerals on the seabed. Decision making on allocating licences for exploration and ultimate mineral recovery is by the Cook Islands government and will be set out in relevant statutes. Seabed minerals investigations within the EEZ of the Cook Islands and adjacent waters were first carried out by, USSR, US, and New Zealand research vessels in the late 1960 early 1970?s and indicated the presence of high concentrations of manganese nodules. This study was investigated about physico-chemical parameter such as water temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and total organic carbon (TOC). CTD (Model: Sea-Bird 911 Plus) castings were carried out on two transects in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean. As a part of the Korea Deep-sea Environment Study (KODES), inorganic nutrients and TOC were determined at 41 stations located from 131° to 136°W along 10.5°N and from 17° to 5°N along 131.5°W (Fig. 1). Mineral exploration problems in the S.W. Pacific are not unique to that region, but a combination of favourable circumstances render it an ideal area to attempt to solve such problems. The land area of the S.W. Pacific island nations is only a fraction of the total sea area they can claim under current International Law. Hence, they have a great need to explore and evaluate their offshore areas. For the past ten years the focus of this work has been CCOP/SOPAC which has individually and jointly with other groups initiated and maintained far reaching marine mineral exploration programmes. In association with CCOP/SOPAC the writer has obtained and analysed approximately 650 sediment samples from the S.W. Pacific region for seventeen elements. Multivariate statistical techniques have been applied to the data set. The aim has been to identify chemically anomalous sediments reflecting either sea floor mineralisation and/or mineralisation on adjacent land areas.

KIGAM (Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) has been doing various kinds of research works in marine minerals and energy resources exploration and utilization since early 1990s in Korea. In the presentation, the authors will introduce the recent research and development activities mainly focusing on the rare earth metals of the Pacific deep seabed Mn-nodules and gas hydrates which occur from Korean deep waters. KIGAM has been participating in the polymetallic manganese nodule exploration, mining and metal-extraction project, which is modulated by KIOST (Korea Institute of Ocean Sciences and Technology, formerly KORDI). Now KIGAM puts more focus on extracting precious and rare earth metals from the Mn-nodule as well as underlying sediments. The rare earth elements (REE) from seabed mineral deposits also draw attention to those countries including Korea which are lack in natural resources. KIGAM is doing several kinds of leaching experiments using various kinds of reagents under the different experimental parameters. Extraction of rare earth metals from deep sea nodule using H2SO4 and HCl solution showed good leaching effect. In Expeditions 22 and 26 of China Ocean Survey (COS), Chinese and Russian scientists have Carried out a lot of work to search for hydrothermal sulfide in Southern Mid-Atlantic ridge (SMAR) 19°S, but come back empty-handed at last. The sulfide formation is closely related with the water-rock reactions which are controlled by the heat source. Melt inclusions are considered to have a unique compositions in melt to reflect the deep magma processes. Fortunately, we have found a large number of plagioclase hosted melt inclusions in SMAR19°S MORB. We have done experiments by re-homogenization and re-crystallization of these melt inclusions. During the re-homogenization experiments, the forming and melting processes of the olivine crystal inside the melt inclusions indicate that the homogeneous temperature of melt inclusions is 1190-1200??. During the recrystallization experiments, the different mineral phase assemblages show H2O inside the melt inclusions has hardly ever been loss, in addition Cr element and H2O molecule in SMAR19°S magma are heterogeneity at the time of melt inclusions trapping, and then the re-crystallization experiments provide a method to prove the microheterogeneity of basaltic magma system. Combining with the bulk rock data, this study shows that the melt inclusions are formed at a low-temperature and high-pressure condition. Eventually, this paper speculates that a low temperature heat source generated by a lower mantle potential temperature or/and a thick lithosphere indicated by the melt inclusions that not experienced the H2O loss process are beneath the SMAR19°S. The low temperature heat source transmits its heat to lithosphere through the cooling thermal boundary layer (CTBL), and the thick lithosphere can sufficiently absorb and consume the heat. Under the interaction between the heat source and lithosphere, the residue heat at the infiltration depth of sea water might have been no ability to satisfy the water-rock reactions temperature, therefore, the water-rock reaction should hardly ever appear, so the theoretical reaction zone would not exist beneath the SMAR19°S. Eventually, the interaction between thick lithosphere and the low-temperature heat source should be the dominant factor that makes SMAR19°S area have no condition to form the seafloor sulfide. However, this paper is based on melt inclusions only, in fact, melt inclusions are potential to have melt compositions produced by mineral dissolution, reaction and assimilation, and the volumes of melt inclusions are exceedingly small compared to the overall size of the magmatic systems, therefore, the extrapolation across many orders of magnitude is implicit when applying petrologic information obtained from inclusions to entire magmatic systems. Therefore, there should have other more research to verify the reliability of this conclusion.

The Semenov hydrothermal sulfide cluster (13º31´N), consisted of five fields (Semenov-1, -2, -3, -4, and -5), was discovered in 2007 in the 30th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev [Beltenev et al., 2007; 2009]. The hydrothermal fields are located on a seamount composed of ultramafic and mafic rocks, gabbro, plagiogranite, and their altered rocks. The Semenov cluster is considered to be the largest sulfide accumulation in the Ocean with massive sulfide (MS) resources of about 40 million tons [Beltenev et al., 2009]. MS of the Semenov-1, -3, -4, and -5 hydrothermal fields are mostly characterized by marcasite-pyrite composition whereas rich copper-zinc MS with high Cu and Zn contents (11.37?19.33 and 5.89?18.32%, respectively) and anomalous Au and Ag grades (22?188 ?127?1787 ppm, respectively) were dredged only at the Semenov-2 hydrothermal field associated with basalts (13°31.13´N, 44°59.03´W; 2360?2580 m of depths) [Ivanov et al., 2008].

The exploration of the seafloor regarding the abundances of poly-metallic nodules has received growing attention recently. Image-based exploration using cameraequipped deep-sea observation systems has been introduced successfully to increase spatial resolution in the exploration process but the evaluation and interpretation of the huge amount of image data creates a serious bottleneck. In this paper we present a new software solution to the problem of automatic detection and segmentation of poly-metallic nodules in underwater images, which is not only accurate but so fast that real time image analysis is definitely in reach. Thus, an application on an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) seems possible in the near future.

Gregg Marine, Inc. (headquartered in Signal Hill, California) has recently introduced an innovative seafloor drill system for offshore geotechnical site investigation and seafloor mineral exploration. The system is capable of working in water depths of up to 3,000 meters and is rated to drill to a depth of approximately 150 meters below mudline. The remote operated system integrates established drilling technology with proven Schilling telemetry and controls. The flexible nature of the patented wireline drilling technology enables the use of standard sampling systems (up to PQ-size core and 3? thin-walled tubes) as well as downhole testing systems (including CPT testing, vane shear testing, downhole sensors and borehole geophysical tools). The modular nature of the seabed drill system and the accompanying launch and recovery system (LARS) enables the use of local vessels of opportunity for projects resulting in reduced project costs and improved mobilization responsiveness times. "The Blue Nodules project started February 2016 as part of the EU Horizon 2020 subsidy program. Blue Nodules aims at developing a sustainable deep sea mining system for the harvesting of polymetallic nodules from the sea floor. Blue Nodules is closely related to the Blue Mining and Midas projects, both EU subsidized projects. Blue Mining mainly concerned the development of technical capabilities to adequately and cost-effectively discover, assess and transport deep sea mineral deposits up to 6,000 m water depths. The MIDAS project - Managing Impacts of DeepseA reSource exploitation - was a multidisciplinary research programme investigating the environmental impacts of extracting mineral and energy resources from the deep-sea environment.The Blue Nodules project is divided in seven work packages defined to develop mining equipment and process equipment, to assess and integrate environmental, economic and technological aspects and to assess and minimize the environmental impact of mining polymetallic nodules.This abstract will address part of the work performed in the second work package called: ‘Subsea harvesting equipment and control technology’. The main topic addressed will be the development of a propulsion system to manoeuvre the harvesting system. The propulsion system will be developed with full incorporation of economical and compliance requirements and to have a minimal environmental impact.SummaryBased on information gathered in the 70’s during the first studies into polymetallic nodules mining and more recent data and developments, an initial full scale design of the propulsion system is developed. The largest challenge for the propulsion of a deep sea mining vehicle is to drive on the soft sediments associated with these deep sea environments.
