The Arctic is a region of special economic, geopolitical, research, socio-ethnic, and defense interests of both Russia and other countries of the Arctic zone. Introduction of innovation technologies at ore-processing factories is a direct responsibility of the state and this problem should be solved on the basis of coordination of interests of different stakeholders. The task of elaboration of scientific principles of rational state regulation in the North is very topical. Innovations require considerable investments first of all from private capital. However as an investment object innovations are not attractive for investors as they require large expenditures for long-term projects, and they are connected to high risks because market incentives form striving to get quick profits of private companies and result in a certain behaviour strategy while innovations need ?long money?. Under such conditions without state regulation of investment and innovation activities development of the mining sector in the Arctic practically has no prospects. At innovation development of mining enterprises economic growth is provided at the expense of active state innovation activities. The elaborated strategy of ore-processing enterprises should correspond to the modern paradigm of the ore-processing industry development which is not only for extraction of minerals but also for multi-profile structure having comprehensive use of the resources on the rational basis intended for rational complex utilization of mineral resources of the AZR which by the definition includes maximally full use of the whole aggregate of resources on the economically rational basis with obligatory environmental with resource reproductive and socio-economic functions and deterrents. The main principle of creation of innovation technologies is to obtain more products of higher quality with minimal costs. This allows increasing ?productivity of the resources? several times. This principle makes increasing productivity of the resources the most important and in this case efficiency of use of the resources brings extra profits at the expense of lack of new costs such as payment for protection and utilization of wastes. According to the economic theory only ratio between demand and supply is able to fix optimal proportions in economy and to give necessary signals for investment activities of mining enterprises. In this context market for minerals and increase of mineral resources productivity do not create incentives for investment activities without which neither sustainable economic growth nor solution of macroeconomic tasks are possible. Nevertheless countries should not reject this idea in spite of economic efficiency of the enterprises. Extraction degree of useful components and especially oil in the Arctic zone is one of the lowest in the world. This can lead to crisis of oil industry and other mining sectors. The reason for that is lack of a state policy of realization of innovation technologies in the mining sector in the Arctic.

2-hydroxy-3-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name F203 is a good collector of cassiterite, 1-hydroxy-2-naphthoy hydroxamic acid code name ZJ-3. F203 and ZJ-3 are similar series of isomers. They have similar naphthye, and similar series of functional OH and ?CONHOH, but the seat of OH and ?CONHOH group are different, on the F203 is 2.3; on the ZJ-3 is 1.2, ortho position too. According to Isomeric principle ZJ-3 is a good collector of cassiterite slime too. Using ZJ-3 as collector flotation -10µm occupies 90%, grade 1.16% Sn cassiterite slime of Da Chang Chehe concentration plant, pass one coursing flotation, two cleaning and one scarenging flotation, and obtains grand 18.26% Sn, recovery 92.68% cassiterite concentrate. The result proves the Isomeric principle of flotation reagents is correct again. This principle may supply to synthetize new flotation reagents reference. As ore grades decline, ore deposits get harder and mineralogical complexity increases, metallurgical skills are more important than ever to ensure that today?s mining operations are operating efficiently and profitably. Yet specialist undergraduate degree programs have all but disappeared and metallurgical skills training for graduate engineers in the workspace if often haphazard. In response to this situation, specialists at the JK Centre in Queensland, Australia, have put together a professional development program designed to fast-track skills development for early career metallurgical professionals. The program, called ?MetSkill ® ?, is offered as a group training package for young metallurgists in the workplace. It is centred on a meaningful technical investigation negotiated between the JK Centre delivery team and the client company. As well as learning about project management and data collection and analysis, the participants study specialist topics such as comminution, flotation and mineralogy under the tutelage of senior research and consulting professionals. The technical investigation provides an opportunity for immediate practice of these new skills and JK Centre specialists are on hand to provide feedback and support throughout the program. The participants are employed across different operations in Australia and the Asia-Pacific, and although they occasionally come together for group training activities they are often separated by considerable distance. Specialist educational professionals from The University of Queensland have provided an innovative web platform to support collaboration and communication between all participants. This paper will describe the MetSkill ® program in detail, as well as providing a report on its initial roll-out to 2 groups of Australian graduate metallurgists in 2012

Metso has a long history supplying boilers for high ash coal firing. These boilers are based on circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. CFB?s biggest benefit is fuel flexibility ? it can burn fuels from high moisture content to high ash content. Metso has delivered tens of CFB boilers burning waste or high ash coal starting on 80?s. Some of the boilers have been in operation twenty years meaning that there is a long term experience from these plants available. This feedback includes boiler performance and maintenance issues of the boiler. Metso is also delivering coal washing plants to improve coal quality, i.e. reducing ash content of the coal. The idea to combine coal washing plant and CFB boiler was made up two years ago in Metso. Up-coming legislation of coal washing and restrictions for washery reject land-filling in India are good drivers for this kind of concept. Pre-study of this kind of concept led to the conclusion that coal washing process can be fine-tuned so that reject?s calorific value is only 1100 kcal/kg and that was set as a target for boiler design. Metso shipped 200 tons of washery reject to its own research center located in Tampere Finland. First a wide range of fuel characterization tests were done in lab-scale and after that one week test run in 4 MW CFB pilot boiler was done. Test run proved that 1100 kcal/kg can be fired without any support fuel with special boiler design. Test run results gave a good set of data regarding combustion efficiency, emission performance and boiler dynamic behaviour when burning this kind of fuel. These results are introduced in this paper. "This paper explores the complex interrelationship between the resource cycle, recycling and metal production as a function of economics, environmental legislation, and product design. It is argued that central to optimising this resource cycle lies the control in particular of physical separation plants by the application of advanced sensor technology and sorting equipment, as well as suitable control and sampling algorithms supported by optimising mass balance models.Metals are produced through a long chain of processes. For primary resources, metals production goes through mining, mineral processing, ore smelting, conversion and refining steps or via low temperature hydrometallurgical processes, or a combination of both pyro- and hydrometallurgical operations. For the recycling of resources, metals are separated and recovered from metal scrap, which plays an increasingly important role in the world. Metals after being produced, either from primary or recycling resources, have to be further refined or manufactured into various types of alloys and finally shaped into different products for the end-users. Since the end-user discards products the contained materials find their way back into the resource cycle as scrap. Therefore, controlling the metallurgical reactors also controls, in a much broader sense, the material quality in the complete metals cycle, from the production phase, to the end-use phase, up to the recycling phase (Reuter et al., 2003). The recycling phase includes separation of materials into saleable intermediate products, which are reintroduced into the production phase as a recycling resource. Therefore, the metallurgical processes in each unit operation in the metals production and processing chain have to be controlled, so as to achieve optimal performance of high product quality, low energy and materials consumption, and low environmental impact."

It is difficult to analyse the economics without an integrated view of mine transactions, stockpile inventories, process flows and assays. The lack of integration of mining and metallurgical information with sufficient detail to analyse and act is a problem. However, to take action requires real time information from manufacturing assets, corrected for gross errors from trucks, shovels, conveyors, faulty sensors, bad instrument calibration. Validation methods use process models to identify inconsistent information in the case of corrupt actionable information. This paper presents new strategies that transform the data into business information for continuous improvement and optimization. This technical presentation will review recent implementations enabling large metallurgical complexes to improve their data quality for overall production and energy management. A competence center emerges as an enabler for implementing operational intelligence. The evolution of Web services to troubleshoot plant information and to collaborate at the enterprise level is presented.

The production of minerals for economic use is a two-stage process, involving mining to extract the mineral from the ground, and processing to convert the mineral into a marketable product. Generally, mining and processing have been viewed as self-contained entities. Both have separate objectives, separate cost centres and key performance indicators (KPIs) that do not reflect the customer/supplier relationships that inherently exist. However, mining and processing operations are inter-connected and therefore intimately inter-related with the performance of one operation affecting the performance of another. Optimizing each stage separately without considering the whole system often misses potential economic benefits and energy savings. During the past fifteen years, the authors have been involved in implementing a holistic methodology ?Mine to Mill Process Integration and Optimisation (Mine to Mill PIO)? to maximize the overall profitability of the operation rather than just optimizing any individual process in a mining operation. Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI), along with their project partners, have conducted several projects to significantly increase their production- generating typically 5% to 20% higher throughput and improve the overall mine and concentrator performance through PIO methodology. This proven methodology has applications ranging from greenfield projects to long-standing operations with AG/SAG, HPGR or conventional grinding circuits. This paper explains the Mine to Mill PIO methodology and discusses the benefits of such an approach on the energy consumption, the overall costs and benefits of mining operations. The paper also summarizes several case studies illustrating the use of PTI methodology in a variety of applications. "A worldwide decline in competency levels of practicing metallurgists over recent decades has become clearly evident and is a common topic of discussion among senior practitioners and professional associations. The associated impacts on the industry are material and include operational inefficiencies, missed optimisation opportunities and suboptimal new plant designs. There are many contributing factors to this condition. Decrease in competency is particularly evident both in regions where imbalance between supply and demand has led to a general reduction in experience levels for comparable roles over time and in emerging regions where a rapid rise in demand for practitioners has occurred in conjunction with rapid economic development and industrialization. The context, depth and breadth of education curricula and levels vary with location such that solutions to the technical competency dilemma may need to be developed specifically for each region with these influences in mind. Delivering, demonstrating and maintaining competencies are a critical requirement of undergraduate training and ongoing professional development. Other factors such as generational and cultural characteristics and expectations, political influences, role requirements and employment reward and recognition systems all play a critical role in determining if core competencies can be effectively developed, applied and subsequently maintained. This paper reviews factors impacting and some common approaches to competency development. The authors’ experiences in the management of professional development efforts within the global industry are reviewed and a blueprint proposed to address industry requirements in this area."

India is the 5th largest producer of steel in the world and is slated to produce more than 180 Mt by 2020. Expectedly about 50 % of this would be through the Blast furnace route and the rest through Sponge iron / DRI route. Considering that there will not be any major change in iron making technology by that time, the Blast operation would require lump ore (10-40mm) with around 64% Fe grade and sinter fines (<10mm) with 60% Fe (min) as its feed. DRI process would need calibrated ore of size 5-18 mm as the most suitable size of feed. It is also expected that of the total requirement of ore for the DRI route a significant part would be DRI pellets. In India, there is considerable debate going on regarding the technology to be adopted for the processing of iron ore and there is a lack of clear consensus. The above scenario indicates that the processing requirement of iron ore in the country would involve both washing technology as well as beneficiation technology. CDE Asia Ltd is in the forefront of iron ore processing in the country and the experience gained by the company over the last few years of functioning has led the company to believe that route to be adopted depends on the end product requirement and the starting grade of the feed. Keeping in mind the nature of the feed required for the Blast furnace & DRI operation; it is obvious that good washing technology would be highly beneficial to the iron ore industry. Depending on the grade of ore available the limits of washing will be decided and equipment for lump ore beneficiation such as jigs could be incorporated into the washing circuit. Scrubbing of ore either before washing or selectively scrubbing the lumps could be necessary. Very low grade ore and jig rejects would be required to be totally ground and beneficiated for the production of pellet feed in order to utilize the iron ore resources entirely. Another source of ore for pelletisation would be slimes generated from the washing process as well as the huge quantities already available in the tailings dams in the operating mines. Deslimimg and magnetic route of beneficiation could release at 30-40% of the Fe locked up in these tailings ponds/dams. The paper describes the concept with examples from operating plants and proposes how the adoption could be engineered through test work and proper plan of integration. "Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is gaining increasing acceptance as a decision-support tool by which to evaluate the environmental performance of a product, process or service. This is evidenced by its inclusion in international policy documents (for example in the European Union’s Integrated Product Policy) and in environmental management standards (the ISO 14 040 series of environmental management codes relate to LCA). In response to this, the minerals industry has conducted a number of commodity-specific LCAs. These include studies for global production of a number of commodities including copper, nickel, aluminium and steel. In addition, a number of minerals companies profess to use LCA as part of their suite of project and technology assessment tools. Often, this collected use represents more a situation of “we do this because we’re told it’s good for business” rather than from any demonstrable evidence of this fact. This has led to a situation of much confusion and disillusionment within the industry, exacerbated by the obvious current limitations of LCA to accurately reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals.Our point of departure here is that LCA, conforming as it does to the tenets of environmental systems analysis, is a valuable starting point, and that there is merit in exploring to what extent the methodology can be enhanced to better reflect the environmental performance of minerals and metals. Specifically, we explore here the further development of LCA to address the following:• Land Use issues• Consumption of Abiotic Resources including metallic and non-metallic minerals, water and soil)• Human and Eco-toxicity issues relating to mobility and bio-availability of metals• Salinityand address these through selected experimental and simulation case studies relating to energy- and base minerals production. Advances resulting from the United Nations Environment Programme/Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Life Cycle Initiative are presented in that they directly affect the application of LCA to mining, minerals and metals. Comments are offered on how best the mining and minerals industry might interface with future developments resulting from this Initiative in order that the Initiative can deliver outcomes which render LCA a useful tool for decision making in mining and minerals processing."

The paper is giving an overview about successful operating Loesche Vertical ? Roller ? Mills (VRM) installations and summarises the main benefits of the dry compressive Loesche grinding technologies in Airflow- and Overflow-Mode. Some of these benefits are optimised energy efficiency of the grinding - classifying - circuits, increased mineral recoveries and decreased OPEX costs, at a parallel simplification of the process route. Within this paper the process values of the Loesche VRM are compared to existing or planned conventional grinding ? classifying circuits. Further advantages discovered in pilot trials and examples for new more efficient process route alternatives are given. The paper reports about production and pilot trial experiences obtained by crushing and grinding Iron Ore, Iron Ore Concentrates, Copper Shale, Copper Matte, Copper Slag, Titanium Slag, Tin Slag, Steel and Stainless Steel Slag with Loesche VRM.

Most of the quantity of the water soluble xanthates, used in mineral flotation, is consumed in the process. However, the residue amounts are water contaminants downstream the mineral processing operations and can be toxic to aquatic biota at concentrations of 1 mg/L. In order to be able to discharge water from tailing ponds to natural water bodies the concentration of xanthates has to be decreased. The present paper studies the uptake of potassium ethyl xanthate by directly modified with copper and lead ions natural zeolitic rock, without passing through zeolite transformation into homoionic form. Modified zeolite exhibits high, comparable with powdered activated carbon of chemical purity grade, capacity to remove potassium ethyl xanthate from model wastewater, with pH in the range of 7?9 and pollutant concentration in the range of 10-150 mg/L. The pollutant immobilization is fast. Both Cu and Pb modified zeolite behave as selective with respect to xanthate in the model wastewater, and Cu-modified zeolite possesses higher selectivity. "The Circular Economy (CE) will play an important role in shaping a resource-efficient society. Enabling this transformation from a linear to a CE requires precise quantification of resource efficiency and thus the economic viability of the system. Based on the development of simulation tools of classical minerals processing and process metallurgy, the Outotec (2018) HSC simulation platform could be further developed (gleaning from many academically published works of the author listed below), permitting the simulation of the CE system and to subsequently calculate its resource efficiency. It enables the estimation of a simulation-based Recycling Index (RI) from a product’s Bill of Material (BoM) and Full Material Declaration (FMD). It is a unique methodology for Design for Recycling (DfR) based on minerals engineering linked to a deep understanding of minerals and metallurgical process engineering. A key to this simulation is a detailed understanding of the mineralogy (both geological and designed) of the CE system and its many products, materials and systems, both in a geological mineral and a product-designer-mineral sense. In addition, a detailed understanding and quantification of the thermodynamic properties of the system (both energy and exergy/entropy) is key to understanding its economics and its limitations. With this approach, the actual losses of the CE system are shown and thus highlights the limits of the CE as defined by minerals and metallurgical process engineering principles. INTRODUCTION From the dawn of the industrial era up to today, many of our products have been created according to the principles of a linear economy: we find resources, make a product, and then dispose of it when we are done using it. But in recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to move to a Circular Economy (CE), an approach that aims to maximize the usefulness of products, components and materials across the entire lifecycle. In terms of recycling, this means achieving maximum recovery of materials once products reach the end of their usable life while also maximizing resource efficiency. Of importance is therefore also not only the recovery of critical technology elements that make the CE system run, but also the criticality of the metallurgical infrastructure that must be present to recover these elements economically. Ellen Macarthur (2017) defines the CE as “Looking beyond the current ""take, make and dispose” extractive industrial model, the circular economy is restorative and regenerative by design. Relying on system-wide innovation, it aims to redefine products and services to design waste out, while minimising negative impacts. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural and social capital.” However, when translating this significant message to images, it is striking that the key extractive industry is not depicted in the Ellen Macarthur as well as EU depiction of a CE (EU 2015). Other CE discussions are also wanting in their fundamental detail and description e.g. Accenture (2015) and Beaulieu et al. (2016)."

"The JKMRC researchers have been redeveloping the suite of breakage testing techniques to more realistically align with the breakage environment in comminution equipment. Computational modelling, especially with the DEM, has highlighted the modes of impact and contact, along with the energies of these interactions in a wide range of equipment. This has driven the need to match these modes in laboratory ore characterisation tests. The objective has been to build a continuum of breakage tests and associated models that span the required range of breakage forces and environments. The ore sample is subjected to a sequence of tests covering: abrasion (surface breakage) of angular through to smoothed particles; single particle impact from high energy single impact breakage down to low energy; incremental breakage covering 60 mm down to 50 µm particles; particle strength distribution; and bed breakage over a range of compression and energy input. These tests are suited to multi-component ores with a distribution of strengths. A modelling technique is also being developed to utilise primary breakage for modelling breakage under different types of confinement. This paper draws together these techniques, previously published by the authors, into a coherent whole. The suite of tests is approaching the point where a fixed set of tests can be used to model the performance of a full range of equipment, removing the need to conduct repeat ore characterisation tests for each different piece of equipment incorporated in a circuit design. This path should open up the application of different circuit configurations and novel equipment in comminution circuit design.1 INTRODUCTION Comminution modelling utilizes a wide range of ore characterisation techniques and methods to deal with the range of comminution equipment available for production use. In general, the tests have been designed to correlate with specific pieces of equipment, using calibration factors to provide the link between the small-scale test and industrial-scale performance. The majority of tests focus on estimating the power requirement of process equipment to achieve a desired throughput and grind size. Overall, this approach has achieved acceptable outcomes in the past, but the reality is that equipment sizing suffers from considerable uncertainty, in excess of ±20% is not uncommon. This uncertainty is covered by safety margins and automatic scaling factors in equipment selection. In striving to improve reliability, the industry tends to add more adjustment factors to the tests, and design margin rather than question the basic validity of the testing process. As the tests are often correlated to production equipment via carefully guarded databases, they are also locked into historic operating inefficiency, not providing direction or revealing opportunities to improve production efficiency in comminution equipment or circuits. Safe in the knowledge that they are achieving the expected production based on test work predictions, a site is unlikely to set their sights on reducing specific energy consumption by 10%."

"The flotation process of native Rare Earth minerals such as bastnasite, monazite, mixed minerals of bastnasite and monazite, using the new effective collector Dh was studied in this paper, respectively, and the flotation properties are described. The good qualities of the new collector Dh were revealed through comparing with other collector of Rare Earth minerals. The test results of different ore samples show that at moderate pulp pH (8.5-9.5), Rare earth minerals can be effectively separated from barium, calcium and silicon bearing intergrowth minerals (barite, calcite and silicate minerals) and high quality Rare Earth concentrates can be obtained successfully by the new collector Dh, acid silica gel, turpentine and reagents fitting together rationally. In order to determine optimum technical conditions, the effect of pulp pH, pulp temperature, pulp density and the effect of dosage of reagents (Dh and acid silica gel) on the flotation were investigated in the test.Simultaneously, the paper explores the mechanism of the flotation of Rare Earth minerals from intergrowth minerals. The infrared spectra for Dh and Rare Earth cation by analysis in theory shows that Dh formed chelate complex with Rare Earth cation and were adsorbed on the surfaces of Rare Earth minerals. The mechanism of the intergrowth minerals depressed by acid silica gel can be explained as gummy colloid hydrolyzed from acid silica gel which are selectively absorbed on the gangue minerals, making them hydrophilic and depressed, with pulp pH value of alkalescent."

Alumina demand is steadily climbing around the world and is likely to continue to do so for many years. In such a commodity industry, the question arises as to what effort should be expended on innovation, given that for an individual company, the drivers of change are cost and quality as the market demand is essentially assured. This is of course a long-term view. The current conditions are less attractive. In this presentation, we review the broad issues that are considered targets for collaborative development by the industry as recently updated in the alumina industry roadmap published by the International Aluminium Institute in 2010. While they cover areas such as ?mine rehabilitation, residue management and use, alumina production from high sulfur bauxite, bauxite beneficiation, energy efficiency and alternative technologies for alkali and alumina recovery from bauxite residues,? it must be remembered that each refinery is different in terms of the feed material and the circumstances of waste disposal. Of particular interest is the more competitive area of breakthrough technologies. In the presentation, we will consider a range of opportunities that could transform the industry, from relatively near term possibilities such as bauxite activation through possibilities to eliminate crystallization as currently practiced to complete alternatives, such as the use of hyperaccumulating plants. Against this optimism, some of the realities that hold back breakthrough innovation will be presented for discussion.

India is endowed with a reasonably large reserve of chrome ore, amounting to about 100 million tons in different grades and is one of the leading producers of ore/concentrate along with South Africa, Kazakhstan and others. Chromite production in India has registered a 10 times increase during the last 30 years. Till late 1940s, the practice was to mine the high-grade ore for making ferrochrome and charge chrome and export the same leaving the low and medium grade ores stacked around the mine as waste material. This practice was continued for quite some time till the increase in world wide de-mand of chromite initiated an increase in production of chromite ore in India and the aspects of ?economy of operation? and ?conservation of mineral? dawned on the producers and associated authorities. Recovery of chrome values from low and medium grade ore was initiated to produce high-grade saleable concentrate. Suitable legislation was made by Government of India to induce and provide incentives to the operators to do so. First large scale chromite beneficiation plant in India was commissioned about three decades back at Byrapore in the Southern state of Karnataka. The ore, rather simple in nature and relatively free from clay, was obtained from underground. The processing consequently was simple washing and wet tabling. Further more, some test work, on the samples from eastern coast particularly from Orissa, was carried out at an internationally reputed laboratory by a large private operator and the plant was set up. This consisted of a combination of crushing-grinding-de-sliming-classification followed by concentration in multi stage spiral concentrators and shaking table. The plant was commissioned and operated successfully. Soon a state owned company followed suit on the basis of test work carried out in a well equipped Indian laboratory. The plant worked satisfactorily after some initial teething trouble and the company plans to double the existing plant capacity by installing balancing facilities. This development prompted a number of operators, including industry leaders to join the fray and the chrome ore processing industry flourished in India. More and more operators are now in the process of adding capacities to their existing plants. This paper attempts to chart the evolution of chrome ore beneficiation industry in India through a case study with reference to an existing plant. For the first time, the idea of sustainable development was recognised at a high political level at the UN Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 (UNEP, 1992). Then the governments of the world committed themselves to promote sustainable development in their national activities and international co-operation. In 2001, the European Council approved the EU Strategy for Sustainable Development (European commission, 2011). This complements and supports the EU?s so-called Lisbon Strategy (European council, 2000) on competitiveness. The revised Strategy for Sustainable Development was approved in June 2006. Recently sustainability has had an important role in policy and decision-making while the public awareness towards limits of the environment has been rising. However, the indicators of industrial sustainability satisfy primarily the needs of corporate management and global investors. The information is often broad and non-specific and might occasionally even give a false impression. Moreover, contradictions between environmental, economical and social aspects also point out the unreliability of existing sustainability indexes. Therefore, the current state of affairs serves the interests of neither the industry nor the policy makers. Current corporate sustainability indexes and indicator systems need to be assessed with scientific methods encompassing the identification of their strengths and weaknesses. This requires quantitative and qualitative assessment and synthesis of existing indexes and indicator systems, providing new data on the functionality of existing corporate sustainability indicators. Therefore, the assessment lays the foundation for the development of new, more balanced sustainability index. Our first aim in this multidisciplinary article is to analyse existing global sustainability indexes for process industry. Second, we will introduce a first version of a new sustainability index for process industry, which includes the environmental, social and economic impacts of the plant, as well as legislation aspects.

Carbonates have gained significant economic importance for the human kind. On one hand over a hundred uses are listed for carbonates. On the other hand, carbonates host base metal deposits. Although the carbonates play a significant part in the development of those deposits, in the mineral processing they consume acid and cause selectivity problems during flotation and leaching. Carbonates also accompany other industrial minerals as waste rock. For all those cases it necessary to find a technique to separate carbonate as early as possible in the processing chain. In this paper, the applicability of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sorting for the separation of carbonates is discussed. NIRS sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique, in which particles are singularly detected by a sensor and then rejected by an amplified mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic process. This technique can for example be implemented in the process as a pre-concentration step for coarse particle sizes up to 300 mm. NIRS sorting discriminates among materials based on the difference that exist between their spectral properties in the near-infrared (NIR). Vibrations of molecular bonds in carbonates cause characteristic spectral properties in the NIR, which makes carbonates detectable, possible to identify, distinguish and separate from other rock materials. The spectral properties can also be used to distinguish between different carbonate minerals and mixtures. If the spectral variations are large enough for detection, sorting based on NIRS is possible. Feasibility studies on sensor-based separation of carbonates in the processing of talc, borate, fluorite, marble, zinc-oxides, copper sulphide and iron ore as well as the discrimination of calcite and dolomite mixtures are conducted and indicate the high potential of NIRS sorting in the minerals industry. This article presents results of studies performed to determine the feasibility of using low-grade limonite ores from Yunnan deposit. Laboratory tests and commercial trials have shown that the magnetic separation can be performed with a high high-grade concentrates. The quality of the preparation concentration meets the requirements for blast-furnace smelting. The results as a whole demonstrate the feasibility of utilizing bank limonite ore. Yunnan limonite?s magnetic separation, roasting magnetic separation and flotation experimental study shows that grade of the ore grade can been from 32.91% heighten to 58.64%, a recovery of iron is 90.87%, productive rate is 51% through orthogonal test optimization; roasting magnetic separation can obtain that the grade of iron preparation concentrate is 61.16%, recovery is 67.39%, productive rate is 36%. As far as economy and enviormental protection is concerned, strong mag-netic suggested a more appropriate process. Keywords: Limonite; Roast; Magnetic separation
