In the region of the North-Bohemian Coal Basin and its environment, there, in a row of places, are found the accumulations of rocks of the sedimentary and pyro clastic origin, the preliminary composition of those shows the possibility of their being utilized for the production of ecologically sparing natural Fe- and Ti- pigments and filling substances. In many places of the regions of Chomutov and Podborany and near Bilina and also in other places, there are found raw stocks perspective for the preparation of yellow up to ochre-brown, red, brown-red and green dyes. The target of project is the verification of dispensable reserves, their mineralogical composition and chemical and physical attributes, verification of treatment ways of Fe-and Ti-pigments separation (hydrocyclones, magnetic and electrostatic separation) and their stabilization and technological painting attributes for applications in colors, coating and plastic masses, mortar mixtures etc.

Bentonite is an excellent sealant mineral material because of its desirable swelling and self-healing characteristics, low permeability, sorptive qualities, and longevity in nature. A new type of water-swelling building sealant made from bentonite was studied in this paper. The building sealant is prepared by Na-base bentonite, vaseline and paraffin wax under different mass fraction of bentonite (which is 60%,65%,70% respectively). Under unrestricted state, some properties of samples were investigated. The volume expansion ratio at 24 h is 211%, 222%, 256% , and permeability coefficient is 2.86×10-8 cm/s, 4.15×10-8 cm/s and 4.78×10-8 cm/s respectively; low temperature flexibility of the sample (bentonite quality is 65%, 70% respectively) is good, and it does not flow heated for 2 h under 80?. The results of XRD and SEM indicate that bentonite is coated preferably by vaseline, and the spacing of layers of bentonite do not changed. The sample can keep full water swelling ability, and has good molding process. The test results prove that the properties of samples may reach the standard of building sealant.

One of the dewatering methods in mineral processing plant is filtration system. Disk filters are included the porous surface with pressure drop on both sides, Water in the pulp passes through the surface and solid particles remain as a cake on it. Wet concentrate production of magnetite processing plant at Golgohar Mining and Industrial Company with solid tonnage of 160 ton per hour and 49% solid amount contains 166 m3/h of water. In the present study, in addition to studying disc filter performance, the effective parameters on cake moisture were studied using Vacuum Bottom-Feed Leaf method (in the laboratory scale). Optimization was performed using the Taguchi method. The results showed that the cake moisture is reduced by increasing particle size and solid percentage (because of specific resistivity reduction), while the rate of cake formation and its thickness are increased. Also, it was found that by increasing pressure, the cake moisture is reduced and cake formation rate and its thickness are increased. In this study, the effect of fabric texture was also examined. Lowest cake moisture was obtained in condition of using compressed plain fabric with mono-multi filament fibres, pressure at 75kPa, solid percentage of 65 to 70, particle size (D80) equivalent to 123µm and disk rotation speed of 1.25 rpm.

In this paper, the producing process of using V2O3 as raw material to obtain vanadium nitride was analyzed through the means of thermodynamic. The analysis shows that conversion follows the principle of reduction step by step in the conversion process of V2O3. The temperature of the reaction system has prominent influence on the nitrogen content of products, and the reaction is very sensitive to temperature. As raising temperature, the fine grain structure of the nitrides is more evident, and the grain size of nitrides increases. At 1703K, the nitrogen content of the products tended to be constant after soaking over 3 hours.

Under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy, a project was completed in 2005, which studied the use of a special pneumatic capsule pipeline (PCP) system, driven by linear induction motor (LIM), for transporting minerals and/or mine wastes. In this study, the pipeline is a rectangular tube of 1m × 1m cross section. The capsules are similar to railroad cars running on small rails imbedded in the tube. A LIM is placed AT the entrance of the tube to transfer power electro-magnetically from the LIM to capsules. The capsules going through the LIM, propelled by the electromagnetic field generated by the LIM, move faster than the air and hence impart energy into the airflow. This in turn pushes the capsules in the tube forward. When the tube is long (say longer than 10 km), additional LIMs may be needed along the tube to serve as booster pumps. An advantage of using LIMs instead of blowers as used in ordinary PCPs is that capsules can pass through the LIMs unhindered. This enables the use of booster pumps for long tubes. It also enables PCP to achieve much higher cargo throughput than that of PCPs using blowers, thereby reducing unit cost ($ per ton-km). Advantages of using capsules with steel wheels running on steel rails in the tubes including: (1) contact friction is only about one-fifth of that using rubber tires, thereby conserving energy, (2) capsules can run at a much higher speed than those using rubber tires without overheating and damaging the tires, and (3) rails make capsule motion control simple; they restrict lateral movement of capsules, and make branching easy-by using standard rail crossing equipment. This advanced PCP system combines the advantages of LIM with the advantages of rails, resulting in a super-efficient tube system having throughputs an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional PCPs, and having an energy efficiency better than railroad transport. Analysis shows that the system is highly cost-effective when throughput is high-at least 5 million tons per year. The system is most suitable for long-distance transportation of minerals (including coal and flyash) and wastes (including both mine wastes and municipal solid waste).

With the progressive depletion of known resources of good quality coal and minerals as well as the increasing demand of these minerals by different user industries, the emphasis has been shifted all over the world from selective mining to bulk mining followed by up- gradation to obtain the required quality of concentrate. The column flotation cell is one of the alternatives to reduce the gangue content of fines because of its inherent characteristics viz. easier to operate, low space required, no moving parts etc. A laboratory flotation column is used to conduct experiment. Present work has been undertaken to observe the effect of process variables (gas flow rate, feed/slurry flow rate, and frother concentration) on gas dispersion parameters (gas holdup, bubble surface area flux) in collection zone and to explore the effect of feed (slurry) inlet orientations and gas flow rate on column?s metallurgical performance. The effects of solid particle concentration, size and type (hydrophobic and hydrophilic) of solid on gas dispersion parameters have also been investigated. Test work has been performed in a continuously operating Perspex column (10 cm in diameter and 168 cm in height) using coal, sphalerite and dolomite as solid. Gas hold-up has been measured by phase separation method and mean bubble sizes are estimated from a drift flux analysis. The influence of operating parameters on bubble surface area flux has been discussed. It is observed that gas holdup in collection zone is affected by air as well as feed flow rates and also solid?s type. It is also found that addition of solid decreases the gas holdup and rate of decrease in gas holdup increases when solid concentration increases and particle size increases. Increase in gas flow rate increases recovery in collection zone due to increase in number of bubbles per unit volume of the column. From the experimental results it is evident that cross-current orientation of feed inlet shows slightly better metallurgical performance compared to other orientations. Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. High precision on-line particle size distribution measurement of mineral slurries has recently be-come available. It provides new tools for the development of monitoring and optimization methods for mineral grinding and separation circuits. The paper presents the development work at the Kemi chromite concentrator plant of Outokumpu Tornio Works in Northern Finland. The Kemi concentrator processes annually 1.2 Mt of chromium ore. The products are upgraded lumpy ore and metallurgical grade concentrate. The concentrate is produced using gravity separation methods, preceded by a rod mill - ball mill grinding stage. The separation process performance is strongly dependent on the particle size distribution of the grinding product at the Kemi plant. Particle size distribution has a significant effect on the concentrate grade and recovery. Currently a new laser diffraction based on-line particle size analyser is used for monitoring the grinding product. The analyser system allows the measurement of the whole cumulative particle size distribution simultaneously. It provides a wealth of new measurement information for process control. A monitoring and optimization scheme for grinding and gravity separation based on the particle size information is presented. The goal is to minimize the production of fine slime, and subsequently to improve the concentrate quality and minimize chromite recovery losses. Data-based recursively identified linear PLS process models are developed for optimization purposes. The preliminary results of the monitoring system operation in on-line use are presented.

Due to not to being our own sources, some energy sources such as oil and natural gas which are used frequently, are not reliable energy sources for our country. Coal is an important energy source that Turkey also has a certain reserve as many countries have. To be able to use for many years the reserves of this source that comes from fossils, there is a great need to make more investigation and development activities on it. On behalf of using more productively the current sources, briquetting facility is represented that commenced production in The Aegean Lignite Establishment in 2005 which is in Manisa, Soma. This facility is a part of General Directorate of Turkish Coal. This facility is run by Soma Coal Establishment that works in return for royalty in a licensed field that belongs to TKI. As the demand of market for 0.5 mm dust coal diminishes, we had to accumulate and stock unmerchantable dust coal. Besides, we have intermixed 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal obtained as a result of washing in coal washer with thermic coal with low price as we could not find a client in the market. In this study, the production stages of briquette coal with high quality produced as a result of pressing by mixing 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal with molasse and lime, quality control, and data?s obtained about calories and solidity of products were presented. By briquetting of 0.5- 1 mm powder coal and 0.1 ? 0.5 mm fine powder coal washed in coal washer, it became possible to sell these coals on a high unit price and by providing the demand of coal of the market, we contributed to productivity of our firm. Graphite, a mineral form of pure carbon, is one of the most versatile minerals in industry, because of its varying physical properties and characteristics. The mineral occurs naturally in the form of tubular crystals or microcrystalline earthy lumps, or it is disseminated in rocks, which have undergone intense metamorphism. India has a large deposition of graphite minerals out of which about 43% are found in Arunachal Pradesh. However, compared to the rest of the country, the North-East Region and particularly Arunachal Pradesh has not attracted attention till date for detail investigation for characterization, beneficiation, prospecting and/or exploitation of the mineral resources including graphite. Bulk graphite sample were collected from upper Subanshiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. Chemical analysis of the representative samples were carried out and found that 7.29%, 19.60% and 6.07% of fixed carbon (FC) is present in graphite sample collected from La-Lamdak, Bopi and Taliha, Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. Chemical analysis of the ash of the graphite sample shows presence of impurities such as silica, Al2O3, Fe2O3, Ca, Mg etc in the graphite sample which are also supported by XRD and SEM-EDX investigation. The graphite samples of Arunachal Pradesh are low grade and do not fulfill the market requirement for the industrial applications. Therefore, low-grade graphite is subjected to beneficiation for the upgradation of the graphite for industrial applications. We have adopted the dispersion?cum-settling technique for the beneficiation of the graphite sample collected from Arunachal Pradesh. The FC of 40.21% with 41.17% raw graphite recovery which is equivalent to 71.02% carbon recovery have been obtained by gravity separation technique using only distilled water without any chemical reagent in case of graphite sample collected from Bopi, Arunachal Pradesh. The graphite sample is upgraded up to 47.75% FC with 41.91% raw graphite recovery, which is equivalent to 85.85% carbon recovery with the pH adjustment at 9 with NaOH. "In all electrical beneficiation methods, the difference in electro-physical properties of the contributed mineral particles, essentially frictional charge, electrical conductivity and dielectric constant properties are exploited to achieve separation. The composition of the raw material determines what kind of either corona charging, conductive induction, or triboelectric separation method should be employed. The process is versatile and is influenced by different parameters related to mineral characteristics, surrounding ambient conditions and electrical and mechanical attributions of the separating device. Electrical separation is surface based beneficiation method which is mainly affected by the surface and surface changes of the minerals. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the electrophysical properties of the minerals can be changed/modified. During electrical/electrostatic separation process, both charge magnitude and its polarity that developed on the particles and therefore, their electrical beneficiation potential is essentially defined by surface phenomena. Therefore, it is essential to understand how the main electro-physical parameters can be changed/modified with applied surface treatment/pretreatment methods to promote separation. Surface treatment of minerals is carried out by different means, including chemical conditioning, irradiation, thermal treatment, etc. This paper discusses and analyze the electrical separation process, electrophysical properties of the minerals with special focus on the effect of surface pretreatment/treatment methods to affect electrical beneficiation potential of the minerals. The surface treatment methods vary in a wide range from simple surface cleaning to more complicated chemical conditioning and doping. The knowledge of the solid-state physics and chemistry leads to improve the beneficiation potential of different mineral systems by choosing suitable treatment method(s). Despite the complexity and multiplicity of the charging mechanisms, difficulties in separating fines it seems to be beneficial make our attempts to further investigate and develop the process as dry, low cost beneficiation process, especially nowadays when environmental concerns, as well as energy and water consumptions are main concerns for mining industry."

Gross calorific value (GCV) of coals was estimated using artificial neural networks, linear and non-linear regression techniques. Proximate and ultimate analysis results were collected for 187 different coal samples. Different input data sets were compared, such as both proximate and ultimate analysis data, and only proximate analysis data and only ultimate analysis data. It was observed that the best results were obtained when both proximate analysis and ultimate analysis results were used for estimating the gross calorific value. When the performance of artificial neural networks and regression analysis techniques were compared, it was observed that both artificial neural networks and regression techniques were promisingly accurate in estimating gross calorific values. In general, most of the models estimated the gross calorific value within ±3% of the expected value.

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. "Grinding is one of the most energy consuming unit operations and is also a very inefficient and costly process. Therefore, it is of great importance to run the grinding process as efficiently as possible. The most common way today to control grinding processes is by measuring the power draw of the mill and try to keep it at a maximum level. However, some studies (Kawatra, 1989, Koivistoinen, 1989, Moys, 1989) have shown that this measurement doesn.t reflect everything that takes place inside a mill. Among other parameters like slurry rheology, temperature and charge behaviour, the volumetric filling of a grinding mill seems to have a large influence on the grinding efficiency (Herbst, 1988, Koivistoinen, 1992, Vermeulen, 1988). A problem in attempting to measure those parameters has been to get a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a DEM modelling technique is used.The results indicate that the system is capable of following the normal variation that occurs in the mill. The signal also very well reflect changes in operating variables such as ball charge level, pulp density and rotational speed. By studying the nature and different features of the signal one can get a better understanding of milling circuit dynamics. Another feature of the technique is the possibility for an operator to continuously follow the grinding process and thereby run the process under optimal conditions."

Jig is a kind of conventional and old gravity concentration equipment, which is mainly used in the preconcentration of medium particle fractions of low-grade nonferrous metal ore. In the past ten years, studies on jigs have made a great progress on separation of coarse and fine particle fractions. At the same time, pneumatic jigs have been widely used in processing of nonferrous metal ore. In this paper, pilot test study and commercial operation for several kinds of jigs used in Dachang con-centrator has been introduced. Dachang mining area of GuangXi province is rich in mineral resources, where many minerals exhibit various complex properties. Many elements such as Sn, Pb, Sb, Zn, S, As, Cu, In, Ag, Gd, Ag, Ga, etc, were found in the run-of-mine ore (ROM). At present, Dachang concentrator produces tin concentrate, lead-antimony concentrate and zinc concentrate. Other valuable elements get enriched and recovered in above concentrates. Dachang Mine with a mining operation history more than sixty years will end its mission on the rich ore resource exploitation. At present, low grade ores are porcessed in the concentrator, and the concentrator begins to run at a loss upon processing the low-grade and refractory ore. Heavy medium cyclones were used in the concentrator for processing 20-4mm fraction, Gongge jigs for 4-2mm fraction, and cone concentrator combined with spiral concentrator to discard the tailings of -2mm fractions. In order to minimize overgrinding, table flotation was used to recover some liberated cassiterites in a complex processing technology. Therefore, the concentrator is difficult to manage. Many years studies have shown that heavy medium cyclones and spiral concentra-tors can be replaced by sawtooth shaped wave jigs to discard 50% tailings to improve the grade of feed. And the feed was divided into rich one and poor one to minimize overgrinding of valuable cassiterites with different grinding mills. In this case, the recovery of the valuable minerals can get improved and the flowsheet was simplified. Moreover, the concentrator begins to make profit with reduction of cost. At the same time, pollution in the concentrator gets reduced and the working condition gets improved too. Sawtooth shaped wave jig was used in Changpo concentrator for replacement of cone separators and spiral concentrators to discard the tailings of -4mm fraction, and the yield of discarded tailings got improved from 30% to 50%. Grades of tin, lead and zinc in the tailings are lowered from 0.15%, 0.12%, 0.7% to 0.06%, 0.05%, 0.4% respectively, with a loss reduction of tin, lead and zinc from11%, 9%, 10% to 7.5%, 6%, 5% respectively, corresponding to the increasement of recovery of tin, lead, zinc from 52%, 50%, 55% to 56%, 56%, 62% respectively. Cost of the concentrator for processing one-ton ROM was therefore dropped from RMB155.28 to RMB119.74. Changpo concentrator lost RMB2.5 million in 2003, but it made a profit of RMB0.92 million in 2006 after the innovations. Batac jig was used in Tongkeng concentrator to discard the coarse tailings at 20-4mm, with a discarded yield of 35%, and the grades of valuable minerals got improved with a recovery above 95% for tin, lead-antimony and zinc.

The concept of adsorption or separation of platinum anions from base metal cations in chloride media using native or chemically modified activated carbons has been discussed in various journals within the context of batchwise systems. In our research work, a fixed-bed column, loaded with native and amine-immobilized activated carbon pellets (Norit RO 0.8), was used to study selective adsorption of platinum ions from chloride media at different flow rates, bed depth and initial metal concentrations. The kinetics, mass transfer characteristics, breakthrough data and separation factors (ß(Pt/Fe) and ß(Pt/Cr)) were quantitatively analysed and modeled. The bed-depth service time (BDST) model was used to model the breakthrough curves successfully in fixed-bed columns and also the dispersive diffusion in the radial and axial directions of the bed were evaluated. The inner diameter of the column was 3 cm and the bed depth was between 1.0 cm and 2.5 cm. Concentrated 4 M HCl acid solution was used to elute the fixed-bed column. It was demonstrated that amine-treated activated carbons provides superior separation factors between platinum and base metals (Fe, Cr). Results showed also, that 95% saturation was reached within 10~26 hours depending on the nature of ACs at a flow rate of 11 mL/min and initial concentration of 5 ppm.

"Mining operations are often located in remote arid environments with limited access to fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in such cases makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing plants. Such plants treating Cu- Mo sulfide ores in seawater have been fully operational in Chile (e.g. Las Luces, Centinela). In many cases process waters used in commercial flotation plants (e.g. Mt Keith in Western Australia) are even more concentrated electrolyte solutions than seawater. This paper is an attempt at classification of the flotation operations carried out in process waters that are concentrated electrolyte solutions.INTRODUCTIONAccording to Gleick (1966), of the total Earth’ water resources 97.5% is in the oceans and ice caps, and thus only about 2.5% is fresh water. Shortage of fresh water in many parts of the world makes it necessary to use seawater in mineral processing operations. The existing commercial operations using seawater as well as recent research projects that deal not only with sulfide ores but also with apatite ores provide a lot of information that can now be generalized. The progress that has been made in this area is reviewed and based on this information an attempt is being made at classifying the flotation operations carried out in highly concentrated electrolyte process waters.SALT FLOTATIONFlotation in highly concentrated electrolyte solutions was studied by Klassen (Klassen, 1963). He reported that hydrophobic, bituminous coals, could float in salt solutions without addition of any other flotation agents. The process is referred to as salt flotation. Other inherently hyhrophobic minerals (e.g. talc, graphite, sulfur, etc.) were shown to behave similarly (Klassen and Mokrousov, 1963)As Figure 1 shows, some coals float quite well in solutions of Na2SO4, NaCl and NaNO3 (Klassen, 1963). While there are differences between the tested salts (explained by different foamabilities of these solutions) all the tests indicate that only bituminous coals float well in concentrated electrolyte solutions. 0.3 M solutions are quite sufficient to initiate a good and very fast flotation. If wettability of various coals is compared it becomes obvious that these well floating coals are very hydrophobic bituminous coals (Figure 2)."

Vanadium is an important metal that is used mainly in ferrous and non-ferrous alloys due to the high tensile strength, hardness, fatigue resistance and corrosion resistance. Vanadium consumption in the steel industry represents about 85% of the vanadium-bearing products produced worldwide. The primary sources of the metal are patronite, roscoelite, and mottramite. Vanadium has also been produced as a by-product of the uranium production program which uses carnotite ores as a source of uranium. Vanadiferous magnetite iron ores are used for producing vanadium as well. In addition, it is known that vanadium can be recovered from the ashes of crude oil and petroleum coke. The process for treating boiler residues, fly ash and petroleum coke is similar to the process used to treat spent catalysts and ores. However, some of these materials may contain high carbon that must be removed at specific stage of the operation. Several processes are available for obtaining vanadium from fly ash, such as roasting vanadium bearing materials in the presence of sodium salt. The salt roasted calcine is subsequently leached with an alkaline or acidic solution. To obtain a cal-cine from which the vanadium can subsequently be recovered, the carbon in the source materials has to be eliminated prior to the roasting process. Other processes use the conventional hydrometallurgical route, in which fly ash is leached with sulphuric acid to obtain an impure vanadium pentoxide. The impure vanadium pentoxide is then treated with a sodium carbonate solution under atmospheric conditions to subsequently precipitate vanadium as ammonium metavanadate. Actually, the salt roasting process is the only process used commercially. In the present study, the progress in the technology of vanadium extraction from secondary materials is reviewed. The perspectives and the challenges for new process development are discussed.

This investigation was carried out with low grade Murgul-Cakmakkaya copper ore once used to be dumped away as waste material. Sulphide minerals in the ore sample observed are chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and to some extent molibdenite; quartz, calcite and dolomite are the gangue minerals. The ore sample assays 0.28% Cu, 2.94% Fe and 3.36% S. Mineralogical study of the ore sample showed that adequate liberation of chalcopyrite for flota-tion was achieved below 100 µm. In flotation tests Aerophine 3418-A was the collector employed, NaOH or Ca(OH)2were the pH modifiers. Deactivators used were sodium meta bi-sulphide, starch, dextrin and lime. MIBC was the frother used throughout the tests. Test results showed that starch alone was the most suitable depressant to give the optimum metal content and recovery val-ues. Activated charcoal was used to adsorb excess collector species in the flotation pulp during cleaning stages After two stages cleaning of the rougher concentrate using starch as the depressant a copper concentrate assaying 21.2% Cu was obtained with 79.5% recovery while the tailings contained 0.01% Cu and metal losses were about 3%
