"Understanding the effect of particle shape on dry rheology is considered to be an important aspect in order to replace natural sand used in concrete with manufactured sand. Crushed particles from solid rock are normally less rounded and have less equally shaped dimensions compared to natural sand. Thus, the flowability and workability of the concrete will be different. In previous research, it has been demonstrated how different crushing techniques affects the shape of the particles. In many cases it is believed that Vertical Shaft Impact (VSI) technology is a way forward to replace natural sand. To be able to study the effect of VSI at the smaller fractions (63-2000 µm) sufficient measurements methods to determine particle shape are required. Optical tools to analyze the aggregates would make it possible to study a large amount of particles at small fractions. The determination of particle shape of aggregates is challenging since the shape is highly irregular and the size span of particles are very large. This study aim to evaluate one of the available optical tools, the Camsizer, for digital imaging determination of shape and size distribution. The available default shape parameters of the Camsizer are studied to understand the meaning of the parameters and their suitability for determining the quality of manufactured sand. To evaluate the capacity to determine particle shape, tests are made with 35 different materials. The results are compared with the dry rheology measured with the standardized "flow cone" test. Dependence has been previously proven between particle shape and the mass flow rate in the cone. Three different shape parameters, aspect ratio, sphericity and symmetry, are studied with the Camsizer and the results are compared with the mass flow rates in the cone. The results indicate a strong linear relationship between the optical parameters and the flow cone test."

Numerous phosphate mineral depressants have been reported in the literature for use during anionic flotation of dolomite from carbonate fluorapatite in slightly acid circuits. In one part of this research, laboratory flotation experiments were conducted to compare the effectiveness of phosphate depressants to process ground, deslimed high-MgO Florida phosphate pebbles. Ten potential phosphate depressants were evaluated during laboratory anionic flotation of dolomite from phosphate in a slightly acid circuit using a sulfonated oleic acid soap plus oil as the dolomite collector. Eight of the depressants have been used by various investigators with foreign and domestic carbonate-phosphate ores. Four of the depressants were found to be reasonably effective during the current flotation study, namely: sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), tetrasodium pyrophosphate (TSPP) and diphosphonic acid (DPA). Without depressants, the sulfonate collector required to produce cell underflow phosphate products containing <0.80% MgO and MgO/ P2O5 ratio <.033 was 1.13 kg/ton of flotation feed at a flotation pH range = 5.5-6.0. Using this collector level with 0.91 - 1.36 kg/ton of feed of STPP, SHMP or TSPP yielded phosphate products analyzing 0.73-0.92% MgO and MgO/ P2O5 ratios = .027-.034 at 90.0-96.8% P2O5 recovery. Similar grade phosphate products were obtained using DPA as the phosphate depressant at 84.1-87.5% P2O5 recovery. When no depressant was used, a similar grade phosphate product was obtained at only 65.9% P2O5 recovery. Another part of the research aimed at reducing MgO content in the final concentrate from Florida phosphate plants by conducting dolomite flotation on the final concentrate. Numerous phosphate depressants were tested for this purpose, including acidic, neutral and alkaline reagents. The most effective phosphate depressant was found to be phosphoric acid, giving both high grade and recovery.

"In pre-design a flotation plant copper sulphide is useful to apply a simplified methodology of economic analysis that relates the size of the grinding product (P80) with the throughput and their effect on copper grade and recovery of copper in the final concentrate of a flotation circuit. With this objective, this methodology covers the following analysis, perform by evaluation of five sizes grinding products (P80): 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 microns. • Flotation testwork (rougher kinetic, open and closed cycle test) has been done to determinate the optimum operating conditions and to estimate the maximum recovery of copper in the concentrate, using Klimpell model • Flotation plant design assumes a conminution product obtained from a 25,000 HP ball mill • Metallurgical balance is performed for the circuit based on flotation testwork • Economic evaluation by calculating capital expenditure (CAPEX), operating expenditure (OPEX) and sales revenue, to determine NPV is performed and relates to the NPV. An optimum grind size is then obtained based on cash flow. The results shows a grinding product size that optimizes flotation and allows a higher NPV and INPV over other alternatives."

"Reverse cationic flotation is a very efficient method of beneficiation of oxidized iron ores when you need to separate hematite and quartz. This method can be also applied to reduce silica content in the magnetite concentrates obtained by wet low-intensity magnetic separation. However, cationic flotation in this case is less effective due to the presence of Fe-Mg-Al-bearing silicates as amphiboles in magnetite ores. These silicates are concentrated in magnetic products and determine the difficulties of their separation from iron oxides when amines and starches are used as collectors and depressants, respectively. The recalculation of the results of the electron microprobe analysis of three calcic Fe-Mg-Al-bearing amphiboles used to characterize cation distributions in structural units and to obtain structural formulas in accord with stoichiometric limits was conducted. The Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to examine the validity of the empirical estimation of cation distributions in amphiboles. The studied samples are metamorphic pargasite and ferrotschermakite and volcanic magnesiohornblende. The crystallographic analyses of the amphibole samples exhibited their heterogeneous surfaces explaining worse floatability of amphiboles with dodecylamine at pH 10. The electrokinetic measurements showed that the position of the isoelectric point of amphiboles is related to a substitution of Al3+ for Si4+ in tetrahedral sites and to an amount of Mg2+ cations in octahedral sites. Thus, the dodecylamine adsorption onto amphiboles through electrostatic interactions is mainly affected by a distribution of these cations in tetrahedral and octahedral sites of amphiboles. In addition, the effect of starch on the depression of Fe-Mg-Al-bearing amphiboles during flotation can be attributed to the presence of metal ions on the amphibole surface, which are capable of forming strong chemical complexes with starch molecules."

The dissemination grain size of chalcopyrite is really fine and refractory grains of -10µm take up 25%. Dissemination relationships among chalcopyrite with pyrrhotite, pyrite, marcasite and gangue minerals are complex. Content of Fe-bearing sulphides and Fe-bearing silicates associated with chalcopyrite reaches to about 60%. It’s hard to liberate and separate chalcopyrite from pyrrhotite. The above four are the main mineral processing difficulties of a copper ore in China. Because of the similar floatability and poor separation effect between chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite, enhanced depressing and collecting method was adopted in Cu-S separation before 2009. Due to the different magnetism among chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and Fe-bearing silicates, magnetic separation is creatively induced in Cu floatation circuit based on the in-depth study of process mineralogy. High efficiency and new Cu-S separation technology of "Rough concentrate regrinding-pyrrhotite rejecting from middling by magnetic separation" and a highly selective copper minerals collector YL-1 had been developed to solve the difficult problems of refractory Cu-S separation, which are heavy load of middling recirculation,difficulty in upgrading Cu concentrate, unstable locked cycle and low separation indexes. And grade of Cu concentrate has been increased by 3.33%, recovery of Cu and Ag has been increased by 19.32% and 10% respectively.

Pre-combustion cleaning of coal plays a key role in the process of efficient and clean utilization of coal resources. Recently, wet beneficiation of coal is predominant around the world. Nevertheless, wet beneficiation processes are limited by the increasingly serious problem of worldwide shortage of water, especially in China. Thus, it is imperative to develop efficient dry coal beneficiation techniques. Currently, several technologies such as air dense medium fluidized bed, compound dry cleaning and air jigging have successfully achieved high-efficiency separation of 50~6 mm coal. However, in recent years, a large amount of fine coal is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector. Thus, it is necessary to develop efficient dry beneficiation techniques for fine coal. In recent years, many countries including China, India, Canada, Germen, and Australia have carried out many research works on fine coal dry beneficiation techniques. China University of Mining and Technology has carried out systematic researches on the introduction the vibrated energy to traditional air dense medium fluidized bed for fine coal beneficiation. This paper studied air dense medium vibrated fluidized beds (ADMVFB) for fine coal dry beneficiation. The experimental results show that the coal of <6 mm size can be beneficiated in an ADMVFB efficiently with the E value of 0.065~0.085, the separating density can be adjusted in the range of 1.45~2.2 g/cm3, and the lower limit of beneficiation can reach to 0.5 mm. Bottom ash is a solid waste stream in a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) processing plant during the combustion of the municipal solid waste (MSW). In the Netherlands, bottom ash contains typically about 18% metals originated from the MSW, and current industrial practice could recover about 10% metals through magnetic and eddy current separators. The remaining 8% as the finer particles is difficult to recover through current physical separation technology. Among various alternatives, vitrification is one of the promising options to immobilize the ash and recover the remaining metals. During vitrification a homogeneous glassy slag and a Fe-Cu based alloy were obtained. In the cur-rent study, the metal alloy recovered from the bottom ash originated from a Dutch Waste-to-Energy plant contains about 82 wt% Fe, 12 wt% Cu and 6 wt% other alloying elements and impurities such as C, S, P, Ni etc. The generated alloy does not have direct commercial applications, and separation of copper from iron-based alloy is critical to obtain the market value of both copper and ferrous constituents. To find a suitable processing route of this metal alloy, various alternative approaches have been considered for an efficient removal of copper from the alloy, and the focus in the present study was on the sulphide treatment at elevated temperatures of 1400 ~ 1500oC. The tested sulphide systems include pure FeS, FeS containing sulphide mixture (such as Na2S and Al2S3), pyrite (FeS2) mineral, ZnS containing sludge as an industrial waste. It was found that the carbon saturation of the alloy is proved to be an essential condition for a proper phase separation. The results showed that FeS mixed with Na2S, ZnS containing sludge and pyrite are effective sulphide systems for copper removal with a removal efficiency of 92% by using pyrite and 95% by zinc sludge at a S/Cu ratio of around 7 times of the stoichiometry. The copper content drops from 12 wt% to about 2 wt%. However, it is still difficult to remove copper completely from the alloy in a single step, and a multi-step operation is needed. The present research is expected to contribute both to the utilization of the metal recovered from bottom ash, and to the general recycling of steel scrap where copper removal from the steel scrap is a critical issue.

The generation of froth with a critical degree of stability and height is an important aspect of the froth flotation. In this paper we have studied the synergism and anti-synergism in frothing behaviour in a mixed flotation collector/frother mixture (a model fatty acid; sodium oleate and a model frother; nonionic (polyethyleneoxide alkyl C14E6). Values of the collector / frother molecular interaction parameters (the ß-parameters) were determined from the surface tension data using regular solution theory. The frothing characteristics of the system were evaluated using a glass column equipped with a series of conductivity electrodes, which enabled the water content of the froth to be determined. From these measurements, the dynamic frothability and static froth stability were determined. It was concluded that the synergism/anti-synergism in frothability was depended on the molecular composition of the surfactant system, the diffusion of monomer to the thin film interface and on the breakdown of the mixed nonionic/anionic micelles.

Iron ore in Bellary-Hospet region is friable in nature and generates a significant amount of micro-fines (-150 µm) during mechanized mining, handling and processing. Present beneficiation practice generally employs spiral classification followed by hydrocycloning to remove slimes (-15 µm). The iron ore fines, beneficiated at JSW Steel Ltd., Karnataka generates tailing having 48-52% iron content in the form of slimes, which accounts for 50 to 55% by weight with respect to classifier overflow. The loss of iron as slime is considerably high. In this context, laboratory studies were carried out with different combination of beneficiation techniques with an objective to develop an efficient flow sheet to achieve better product grade and recovery from classifier overflow. The results revealed that de-sliming process by hydrocycloning in combination with either magnetic separation or froth flotation leads to increased iron loss in tailing. Based on investigation it is observed that forward flotation is beneficial over the reverse flotation. The experimental approach of forward flotation on classifier overflow followed by magnetic separation on flotation tailing resulted in overall product grade of 62.9% Fetotal and 70.3% yield. The tailing contains 34.6% iron, which accounts for 29.7% by weight with respect to classifier overflow.

Attractive particle interactions which underpin the sliming of gangue mineral particles onto valuable mineral phases are encountered in a number of flotation circuits. Sliming leads to poor flotation recovery of the valuable minerals and high recovery of the gangue particles in the concentrate. To mitigate sliming, low molecular weight poly-electrolytes are commonly used as dispersants during pulp conditioning prior to flotation separation of the valuable and gangue mineral phases. In the present work, the sliming mechanism of sericite onto chalcocite and the influence of interfacial chemistry and two anionic copolymer dispersants (carboxylate substituted polyacrylamide, polymer Cyquest 3223 and sulfonate substituted polymaleic acid, polymer P80) on the sliming interactions were probed in the pH range 5~9. It was shown that the sliming occurred under solution conditions where both chalcocite and sericite particles were negatively charged, as evidenced by their apparent particle zeta potentials. The suspension pH had a profound effect on sliming process as the extent was markedly greater at lower than higher pH. The sliming was found to be due to the chalcocite dissolution, Cu (I) release and oxidation to Cu (II), followed by hydrolysis and specific adsorption, leading to sericite particle surface charge reversal and the formation of electropositive sites on chalcocite surface in the pH range 5~9. Addition of polymer Cyquest 3223 or P80 not only increased the magnitude of zeta potentials of both sericite and chalcocite particles but also reduced the formation of Cu (II) ions and complexes, which mitigated the sliming behaviour. The adsorption of polymer Cyquest 3223 or P80 at 3 g polymer / kg solid or more had a significant impact on the zeta potentials of both sericite and chalcocite particles. Sericite-chalcocite particulate adsorption studies showed that sliming was completely suppressed via an electro-steric repulsion mechanism resulting from anionic polymeric dispersant adsorption at dosages > 3 g polymer / kg solid.

"Mining has been going on commercially in Zambia for over 100 years. The backbone of the mining industry has been copper production and its by-products of cobalt and gold. Over these years, the mining industry ownership structure has swung from private ownership to state ownership in 1972, and back to private ownership in 1995. Environmental management was first introduced into the body of Zambian legislation in 1991 through the promulgation of the Environmental Protection and Pollution Control Act (EPPCA). The Act’s main functions included the protection of the environment and control of pollution, and in particular to provide for the health and welfare of the people, animals, plants and the environment in general. This Act, was replaced in 2011 by the Environmental Management Act (EMA). The new Act has a number of new elements including: mainstreaming environment in national planning, it provides for the domestication of multilateral environmental agreements, enhances public participation issue, creates a central environmental information depositary, elaborates access to information principles, establishes an environment fund, creates enforcement orders, provides for both Zambia Environmental Management Authority and members of the public to sue for damages following environmental pollution, and provides for the appointment of honorary Inspectors. In addition to this, the Mines and Minerals Act of 1995 provided, for the first time, a section on environmental management in the mining sector. This section also created the Environmental Protection Fund (for mining), and made it obligatory to undertake environmental impact assessment before mining permits could be issued. The Environmental Protection Fund has now been established, as provided for by the law, and currently has more than USD9.0 million in the account. Secondly, environmental auditing is now being carried out annually on mines around the country, the effect of this has been a significant improvement in the environmental management of mining in Zambia. This paper looks at the response of the Zambian mining sector to these pieces of environmental management legislation, and the direction that the mining sector is expected to take on environmental management going forward."

Copper minerals present difficulties during the cyanide leaching of gold ores leading to excessively high consumption of cyanide (and oxygen) coupled with low extraction of gold. Copper cyanide species, if present at high levels, adversely affects the downstream processes such as the activated carbon adsorption and the effluent treatment. In this study, the extraction of gold from a copper-bearing gold ore by ammoniacal cyanide leaching was studied. Furthermore, ammonia leaching as a pretreatment process ahead of cyanide leaching was also examined. Only ~12% of gold was extracted by direct cyanide leaching of the ore. The addition of lead nitrate did not affect the leaching of gold. When ammoniacal cyanide leaching system was used, the extraction of gold was significantly improved to >90%. Similarly, the pretreatment of the ore by ammonia leaching was shown to lead to high gold extractions (98%), in subsequent cyanide leaching with significant reductions in the consumption of cyanide. This appeared to be linked with the ready dissolution/removal of copper during ammonia leaching.

"In addition to physical parameters such as small mass and high specific surface area of fine and ultrafine minerals, chemical parameters such as the adsorption affinity of collectors on the minerals also plays an important role in fine particle flotation. In this study, we have examined collectors with two different ionized groups, carboxylate and hydroxamate, on the flotation of fine niobium oxide (pyrochlore). To facilitate comparison, two hydrocarbon radicals were tested: octyl and oleoyl, which led to four collectors that were studied: octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA), sodium octanoate (C8OONa), oleoyl hydroxamic acid (C18HA), and sodium oleate (NaOl). Small-scale flotation and isothermal microcalorimetric titration measurements were performed to determine the flotation recoveries of different sized pyrochlore and the enthalpic behavior after adsorption of the collectors on pyrochlore. It was found that the flotation performance of the carboxylate-based collectors was generally inferior to hydroxamate-based collectors. Sodium octanoate could not float pyrochlore irrespective of the particle size of the pyrochlore tested. With a longer hydrocarbon chain, sodium oleate was effective to float the relatively coarse pyrochlore (>20 µm) but its collection efficiency dropped sharply for particles smaller than 20 µm. On the other hand, the two hydroxamate-based collectors, octyl hydroxamic acid and oleoyl hydroxamic acid, showed good collecting ability to both the coarse and fine pyrochlore. The isothermal microcalorimetric titration studies indicated a consistent correlation of chain length with floatability of collectors for relatively coarse pyrochlore, as well as a positive relationship between the adsorption affinity and fine pyrochlore flotation recoveries. The key finding of this study was that efficient fine particle flotation could be achieved when strongly chemisorbing collectors were used.INTRODUCTION The first detailed study of the effect of particle size on flotation was made by Gaudin (1931) with sulphide ores. In 1942, Gaudin again demonstrated that (Gaudin et al., 1942) fine particles possess different flotation properties from larger particles. Since then the effect of particle size on froth flotation has been an important research topic by many researchers, e.g., Gaudin (1957), Miettinen et al. (2010), Warren (1976) Jameson (2010), summarizing the behavior of fine particles in terms of their low particle momentum, leading to low rate of collision with bubbles which reduces the chance of adhesion. The suggested remediation methods are mainly based on two approaches: increasing particle size or decreasing bubble size (Warren, 1976). Sand-fine splitting followed by separate flotation treatment of the sand and fines, using deep flotation cells, using starvation quantities of collectors, and using long flotation times, are also strategies to address the problems of fine particle flotation."

This contribution deals with bubble adhesion on particle surface which consists of three steps ? the liquid film thinning, the film rupture and expansion of the three phase contact (TPC). Our attention is devoted to the third step ? to the description of the TPC expansion. Three-phase contact line expansion can be theoretically described using hydrodynamic and molecular-kinetic models. Both of these models were originally developed for the interaction of the bubble with horizontal plane in pure water. Our experiments deal mainly with the interaction of the bubble with the inclined plane in the solution of surface active agents. It was proved experimentally that molecular-kinetic model corresponds also to these conditions and this model was used for the description of the TPC expansion. The model is based on the theoretical description of the bubble contact angle on the three-phase interface. These contact angles change dramatically from 180o to equilibium (Young) contact angle close to 90o. Modificated ADSA method is used for the calculation of the contact angle. This method utilizes the Laplace equation of the capillarity; the bubble profile and the contact angle are evaluated using the set of experimental points around the edge of the bubble. The comparison of the experimental and calculated bubble profile shows a good agreement. The aim of the project is to describe the process of the TPC expansion during the adhesion of the bubble with the diameter up to 1 mm. Inclined planes were used instead of an experimental solid particle. Our experiments were provided in the solution of surface active compounds. The process of the adhesion was recorded using high-speed digital camera and images were evaluated using the image analysis software NIS-Elements. The processing of banded iron ore by direct anionic and reverse cationic flotation to produce pellet grade concentrate is investigated. This low-grade iron ore, known as banded hematite quartzite (BHQ) contains 41.8% Fe, 41.5% SiO2, 1.2% Al2O3, and 0.5% LOI. The flotation behavior of BHQ is studied by varying the effect of concentration of collector, frother, dispersant and pH. Oleic acid and dodecylamine are used as the anionic and cationic collectors respectively. The parameters that gave the best results in cell flotation are utilized in 100 mm diameter flotation column. All the results are compared with regard to the iron grade and recovery in concentrate. It is observed that, anionic collector with dispersant dosage of 220 g/ton, at pH ~8.5 is selective and yielded a high-grade iron concentrate with low silica as impurity. Also, it is possible to achieve an iron concentrate with 64% Fe at 30-37% weight recovery. The characterization studies of the BHQ ore using X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and liberation analysis with QEMSCAN® are carried out. The sample contains 58.8% hematite and 37.7% quartz and the liberation of hematite particles are found to be 90.3% in -25 µm size. An alternative statistical modeling approach called response surface methodology was also undertaken to optimize the operating parameters in order to maximize the iron grade and recovery. The predicted results by the model are in agreement with the experimental values.

The coking coal or clean coal from raw material division, Tata Steel Ltd. is a prime source of energy for inhouse steel making. Coal reserves of semi soft coking coal at West Bokaro is beneficiated by dense media cyclone and froth flotation processes to produce clean coal. In dense media cyclone process two byproducts-middling and rejects are also produced along with clean coal. With the growing demand for clean coal, it becomes imperative to maximize the recovery of clean coal in beneficiation processes. This will help, not only in reduction in cost of production, but also in raw resource conservation, and proper utilization. In this context, a case study was conducted at West Bokaro to identify opportunities for clean coal recovery from by-products. This paper mainly discusses the process for recovery of clean coal from byproducts and study of further liberation of clean coal from byproducts for economic consideration.

"Microcrystalline silica impurities such as quartz and opal-CT commonly associated in bentonite should be controlled and removed as far as possible when bentonite is used as biocompatible raw material because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity. Since opal-CT contained in bentonite in trace amounts cannot be well separated by conventional sedimentation method, in this work, the ultrasound-assisted removal of the impurity was attempted. Irradiating ultrasound into bentonite-water suspension promoted the production of fine montmorillonite particles in the suspension and the production markedly increased when montmorillonite was activated by Na2CO3. Subsequent centrifugation of the suspension made it possible to recover pure montmorillonite particles as an overflow product. Only 16.2 mass % of total solids was recovered as an overflow from the non-activated suspension, whereas 63.5 mass % was recovered from the activated suspension at centrifuging speed of 10000 rpm. Increasing sonicating time enhanced the yield of overflow, however, excessive sonication up to 10 min hindered the purification of montmorillonite. It was observed that the peak reflection of (101) plane of opal-CT in overflow increased as sonicating time increased during prolonged sonication. INTRODUCTION Bentonite consisting predominantly of mineral montmorillonite is clay-rich soft rock generated frequently from the alteration of volcanic ash. Depending on the nature of its genesis, bentonite contains a variety of accessory minerals, which may include mainly quartz, feldspar, opal cristobalite/tridymite (opal-CT), calcite, illite and mica. The presence of these accessory minerals can impact the industrial value of the deposit, reducing its commercial value depending on its applications. Therefore, bentonite is often purified by removing these impurity minerals for special applications where specific properties and characteristics are required (Murray, 1999). Among the special applications, bentonite is often used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry as both excipient and active ingredient in the forms of liquid (suspensions, emulsions), semi-solid (creams, ointments) and solid (powder, capsules and tablets). The basic requirements for bentonite to be used as raw material are pure, microbiological and mineralogical inertness. Physical properties such as swelling volume and gel formation are also important. Particularly, microcrystalline silica polymorphs such as quartz, cristobalite and opal-CT should be controlled and removed as far as possible because they show sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans."

A key uncertainty in flotation modelling is determining, a priori, the proportion of each mineral which will develop a certain rate constant for different feeds of variable liberation and hydrophobicity. First and foremost is the ability to predict the proportion of minerals that will not be recovered, even at very long flotation times, and which therefore report to the tailing stream as the non-floatable fraction (i.e., having a zero rate constant). Recent empirical evidence has shown there are at least two factors which contribute to heterogeneity in flotation rates and, in particular, the appearance of a non-floatable fraction - heterogeneity in the distribution of adsorbed collector amount on a particle-by-particle basis, even for the same liberated mineral in the same size fraction, and the existence of a critical contact angle below which the bubble-particle union is unstable. In this paper, inferred measures of the critical contact angle for liberated particles are compared with stability model calculations. This has demonstrated that the dependency of the critical contact angle with particle size and mineral specific gravity are explicable by bubble-particle stability considerations. This argument is further extended to the flotation behaviour of composite particles, as a function of liberation class, in which the wetting perimeter of the attached bubble on the composite particle surface is constrained by the presence of a surrounding hydrophilic domain for the case of simple binary composites. Reasons for the different flotation behaviour of composite particles having different textures, as noted in the literature, are also discussed in terms of the stability of the bubble-particle union.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, appears on the national and international scene as an important producer of precious stones and the main gems are amethyst, citrine and agate. However, despite the immense potential of this mining activity, the extraction and processing of gemstones in Brazil present critical issues of infrastructure, which prevents a better development of these activities. In general, local production is still concentrated in small rudimentary mining. Recently some of these mines have begun to regularize their activities, in conjunction with the National Department of Mining Control. Besides these problems best practices for extraction activities and environmental control are not usually observed. Another problem which is placed in a critical way is the absence of aggregate value for the products of small mines. In this situation, the miners have great problems to obtain access to technology and adequate infrastructure. In most cases miners need negotiate their gems without processing, transferring most of the profit to intermediate traders. These results in heavy losses for the producer and for the communities involved. Given this scenario, the present study aimed at defining systems technically and operationally viable to be implemented in these communities in order to add value to gemstones. In this study best practices to thermochemical coloring systems, analysis of effect of raw materials and operating parameters on the final color of the gem were analyzed with attention.

"The methods of heap leaching are considered to be the most promising for the low-grade copper-nickel raw materials. The article presents intensification capabilities of the process. Objects of research: the low-grade copper-nickel ores of Moncheplutone deposits (Moroshkovoye Lake, Nyud Terrasa, Nittis-Kumuzh’ya-Travyanaya (NKT), as well as the copper-nickel ore dressing tailings of the “Kola MMC” JSC. The following directions for the intensification of the low-grade copper-nickel raw materials heap leaching have been considered: preliminary electric pulse destruction (EPD) of ore; ore crushing and further sulfuric acid agglomeration. The impact of sulfuric acid concentration (1-3%) on the extraction of non-ferrous metals kinetics from the copper-nickel ore dressing tailings under various conditions of the percolation leaching has been studied. INTRODUCTION The low-grade grade sulfide ores at the abandoned and producing deposits, overburden rocks, mill tailings and non-ferrous slag are thought to be one of the large-scale sources for non-ferrous metals, on the one hand. On the other hand, they are known to be the subjects of emergency environmental danger. For this reason, the use of mine dumps and tailings, as well as the remained ores left in the ground as raw products, and at the same time decreasing the load on environment, are considered to be the pressing ecological and economic issue (Chanturia et al., 2012). Methods of heap hydrometallurgical and bacterial leaching are sure to be potentially productive for processing such low-grade and technogenic raw materials (Petersen, 2016). The early studies of hydrometallurgical method possibility to process copper-nickel ores of the Murmansk region deposits were launched in the seventies of the previous century (Golovko et al., 1978). For referencing purposes, the main types of impregnated ores from the deposits Zhdanovskoye, Kaula, Sopchinsky Plast and Lovnoozerskoye were selected. The metal content varied, as %: 0.46-1.49 of nickel, 0.01-0.62 of copper. In the first experiments, the solution containing 150g/l of H2SO4 and 135g/l of NaCl, was used in the capacity of leaching reagent. The possibility of underground metals leaching from the ores of the Lovnoozerskoye deposit was justified due to the performed laboratory and further large-sized tests."
