Whilst spontaneous combustion has never been considered a major problem in south Durham, certain collieries in the area have a history of heatings and precautions are essential. Three collieries are affected - Shotton, Vane Tempest and Seaham - and in the case of the last two, there are huge areas of high quality coal to work under conditions where spontaneous combustion is a real hazard. The seam being extracted has an immediate roof in goaf left by the incomplete extraction of a contiguous seam worked before the turn of the century. The presence of residual coal stocks and old roadways and cavities adds to the difficulty of preventing unwanted air movement. The main preventive measures adopted are the construction of airtight gateside packs and the use of sprayed surface coatings in the gate. Sampling systems and sampling points are described and, in particular the field of continuous monitoring from the surface is examined. The resulting possibility of a quantitative as well as qualitative assessment of the preventative measures required is discussed.

"Changes proposed in 1969 to modernize legislation governing the exploitation of mineral deposits in the United Kingdom serve as the basis for a discussion of what is considered to be a desirable framework for future legislative proposals.Proposals with regard to prospecting and exploration, evaluation, and acquisition and exploitation are considered, as are suggestions relating, inter alia, to aerial surveys and land restoration.It is concluded that without legislation along the lines proposed there can be no significant revival of metal mining in Britain."

The following procedure was used to determine cut-off grades: define the orebody profile; plan the stope layout and quantify the work involved; formulate equipment-performance norms; calculate unit costs; input process recoveries and metal prices; and calculate the cut-off grade. Use of the method is illustrated using data from a copper mining complex in India. Results from the study led to the following conclusions for underground mines in general. Cut-off dependent costs vary significantly with the stoping method employed, orebody thickness, the degree of mechanisation and the working efficiencies of the workforce and equipment. This applies even within the same deposit. Sub-level stoping and its variants can be operated at a lower cut-off grade than cut-and-fill and its variants. Thinner orebodies affect cut-off grades adversely, but with thinner orebodies very little further reduction in cut-off grade can be achieved once a certain minimum width has been exceeded. For the same stoping method and in the same mine the cut-off grade varies with the degree of mechanisation. Labour-intensive methods require higher cut-off grades. An allowance for working efficiency should be made when calculating cut-off grades. Higher process recoveries allow a significant lowering of cut-off grades

An attempt is made to summarise the mining law of England, Wales and Scotland. Attention is also drawn to the recent privatisation of the electric power and gas industries and the intention of the present Government to follow suit as regards coal mining. The subject of mining law is discussed under the headings: minerals or rights that have been nationalised or are vested in the Crown; ownership (of land and mineral rights); special customs; tracing of owners; right of support (arising from mining); ancillary rights and easements; obtaining prospecting and mining rights; planning permission; statutory aids to obtaining rights; notes on the history, law and practices of petroleum (onshore and offshore), gas, coal, prescribed substances, gold and silver; electricity; safety, health and welfare; and technical information and boreholes. A correction in the subsequent issue amends errors on p.A75 and A82 and regrets the publication of misinformation on the availability of grants

Two of the most important economies in coal-washing are in the actual washing of the coal and in a proper lay-out to reduce to a minimum the cost of labour for handling and washing. A guarantee is usually required for turning out a washed coal containing not more than 2% of free dirt and a resulting refuse with not more than 2% of free coal; any plant that gives results within such guarantees can he considered economical, provided that there are no other losses during the washing process. Various drainage arrangements and washery lay-outs are illustrated and discussed with respect to drainage, bunkers, sieves, settling tanks and conveyors and two further points considered: siding accommodation, which may become quite important with washeries of large capacity especially when the coal is brought in railway-wagons; and the irregularity with which the coal arrives. At first sight, the extinction of a mine fire by the action of some such gas as carbon dioxide would appear to be quite a simple and practicable operation. From a consideration of the theoretical aspects only of the question, it becomes evident that the matter is not so simple as it appears to be at first sight. The fire at the Senghenydd Colliery occurred as the result of the disastrous explosion of October 14th, 1913. This explosion was confined to the west side of the colliery; and as a result the timbers in the main intake on this side were set on fire; but these were soon buried beneath falls, and the tire continued under them. Attempts were made to extinguish it with water, with the aid of chemical extinguishers, and by digging it out; hut these had to he abandoned, and ultimately the fire-zone was sealed off by “ bashings” (stoppings). By December, progress in the decrease of combustion was so slow that it was decided to try the effect of inert gas. The general view of the author is that all the good intentions of manufacturers can fail completely if the variations in circumstances in underground mining are not considered at all times. With a belief that it is the customer that has the experience and know ledge of problems which occur on long installations. Reilloc talk with customers in coal mines around the world, and have done so from their inception. With considerable experience in their home market, their technical approach was received with enthusiasm by coal companies in both Australia and South Africa, and whilst experience was obtained in other countries, it is the particularly close working relationship in these two areas that is covered in this paper. The refinement of manufacturing techniques and the fine tuning of the specification to which the chain is made was developed in conjunction with factual underground experience obtained by customers as they sought to improve their productivity and a reduction in working costs. With a reliable product the mines are able to concentrate on improved operational techniques to extend the useful working life and plan for multi-panel usage of the chain.

The philosophy and detail of mill design in developing countries, where it is frequently difficult to obtain experienced, qualified supervision to operate the plant, are discussed. The resulting design suggests the desirability of simple units, with maximum visibility of equipment operation and material movement, which allow the minimal technical supervision to see the plant conditions prevailing. Information on plant conditions during periods of lesser supervision can be provided by the use of simple, low-maintenance recorders. Where the mill is intended for operation in a developing country, it is insufficient for the flowsheets and plant layouts merely to be drawn: the process metallurgist must pay meticulous attention to details that could ordinarily be left to the design detailing group. The design of this type of mill requires a knowledge of human engineering—of the type of individual who will operate and supervise the plant; probable changes in personnel should be taken into account. Details are suggested for coarse-ore handling, screens, feeders, secondary and tertiary crushers, conveyors, dust collecting, fine-ore feeding, grinding mills, conditioners, flotation, thickeners, filters, reagent systems, sand pumping, sampling, instrumentation, safety and construction

"The absence of homogeneity, in dust-clouds underground indicates the use of a method in which the volume of air sampled is an appreciable proportion of the total volume under consideration. Of the available methods, only the impinger and gravimetric techniques seem to comply with this requirement. In practice, greater efficiency of collection of the smaller particles is possible by the use of a gravimetric filter than with the impinger. For this reason if, as seems desirable, a standard method of sampling be sought, the adoption of a gravimetric technique is to be recommended.Provided that the amount of dust collected is reasonably large, the paper filter would seem to be preferable to the solid crystal type of filter on account of its greater convenience in use.Alternative methods of sampling are desirable to cover the wide range of practical conditions."

The high degree of mechanisation, which is mainly diesel-powered, has a significant effect on heat loads; heat output from this source often exceeds the heat flow from the surrounding rock. The extensive use of diesel-powered equipment also influences ventilation rates and minimum values are necessary to ensure that emissions of diesel exhaust are adequately diluted. Many Australian mines are in subtropical or tropical areas with high ambient wet- and dry-bulb temperatures on surface. This, coupled with the large amount of heat from mechanisation, usually means that refrigeration is required at much shallower depths. A secondary problem is associated with the definition of acceptable thermal environment conditions, which are sometimes based on the assumption of no air movement. This gives rise to very stringent thermal environment acceptance criteria, which, in some areas, would prohibit work on surface, let alone underground

Ghana contains auriferous belts which cover 51 800 km2 of its small area of 239 400 km2. From 1493 to 1600 35.5% of the world gold production was from the Gold Coast (renamed Ghana in 1957). This dropped to 8.9% from 1701-1800. For the past fifteen years annual production has averaged less than 2% of the world total. By 1985 only four gold mines were operating, compared with 45 in 1934 and 11 in 1945. Since 1987 Ghana has experienced a boom in gold mining activities. By 1991, 83 new companies had acquired prospecting licences. At least five new companies have started large-scale production. About 650 licensed small-scale mining groups are in operation. The economic and technological factors that have contributed to the decline of gold production in Ghana are discussed. A summary is given of the methods used to mine and recover gold. These cover small-scale workings, dredging, open cast operations and underground mining. The advantages and disadvantages of these technologies and the future of gold mining in Ghana are considered.

In the five coalfields of Staffordshire, there have been some 43 incidents of spontaneous fires and heatings which have required special attention in the past ten years. This total excludes incidents in the Thick Coal Seam of South Staffordshire, which was worked until 1967, and which was subject to an almost continuous series of heatings. The incidents have been classified to show the sites of occurrence, the contributory factors which may have caused them and the treatments applied to them. The remedial techniques, as practised in Staffordshire, are dealt with in detail, with particular reference to standard methods of stopping-off. Precautionary measures taken are described, including a "liability to spontaneous combustion" classification of all seams, and the setting up of an emergency organization with emergency stocks of materials and equipment. The paper is concluded by a few words on the organization and control at the time of an incident.

Almost all the presently viable nickel reserves in the Yilgarn Block contain nickel in a sulphide phase. Both volcanic peridotite- associated (VPA) deposits and intrusive dunite-associated (IDA) deposits are characterized by massive, matrix and disseminated sulphides (typically, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, magnetite and other spinels), though in the IDA deposits the volume of disseminated sulphides is far greater than that in the VPA deposits. Potentially all geophysical techniques have application in the direct detection of these deposits'gravity for the detection of the dense massive and matrix ore; magnetics for the detection of magnetite and pyrrhotite in the ores; electromagnetics for the detection of the massive and matrix ore; and induced polarization for the detection of disseminated and to some extent matrix and massive ore. In practice the application of geophysical techniques is limited to a varying extent by (1) the relatively small size of an economic accumulation of sulphides, particularly the VPA deposits, (2) the extreme depth of weathering and lack of outcrop on the Yilgarn Block and (3) the abundance of geological noise or anomalous responses caused by sources other than economic mineralization.

Diesel powered equipment is currently used extensively in mining and tunnelling operations around the world due to its mobility, flexibility and through selective application to enhance productivity. However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

The main, though rarely mentioned advantage, is likely to be the standardisation of best practice and product. In a batch process conditions vary cyclically, but with a continuous process they would, at least ideally, remain the same for long periods of time. The other main advantages of continuous over batch processes are likely to be reduced operating and capital costs, the improved possibilities for automatic control, and more consistent product quality. Recent developments are surveyed for ironmaking and steelmaking with reference to blast furnaces; solid-product and molten-product direct reduction; the trough-type processes of Thring, Worner, the Japanese National Research Institute for Metals and Glinkov; basic-oxygen furnace (LD) variants; spray steelmaking; continuous casting and vacuum degassing; rolling; and coating. Encouragement in the devleopment of continuous processes may be drawn from the way unexpected difficulties, such as trouble with sulphur and refractories, were tackled and overcome to achieve the float glass process
