A rocket parachute signal flare is often used to signal a maritime emergency. In the general operation of these devices, a solid rocket motor propels a metal body to an altitude of approximately 1000 ft (305 m). At the end of the rocket motor, a propelling charge drives a signal flare and parachute out of the metal body and ignites the flare, which then burns for approximately 40 seconds as it falls to earth. A constitutive model for the simulation of fracture and fragmentation processes in rapidly loaded rocks is studied. The model was included in a wave propagation finite element code. The results obtained from two different configurations of explosive charge and reflecting surfaces in a plane strain problem were studied. The evolution of the time-dependent fracture pattern is presented.

In this current era of production in large volumes of surface mining, which demands the realization of large-scale blasting, the mining industry must deal with the impact of the vibrations generated by the detonations that are carried out daily in the mines. In this context, the need arises to minimize and control the impact produced by vibrations by determining the interference times of each generated vibration waveform. The vibration waves are produced by the detonation of the explosive charges of each blasthole, analyzing the vibration waves produced by each blasthole, allow us to determine the optimal time between the detonation of each blasthole to reduce the vibrations of the production shot. Once the optimal time is found, it is possible also, to predict the vibration of the production shot (considering times and sequences) using predictive models. The waveform recorded includes information regarding the particle velocity and the dominant frequencies of the vibration. To determine the time between holes, a graph was constructed with the values of the vector Sum VPP (m / s) vs Time between blastholes (s), once the time between blastholes “t” was found, the simulation of the output sequences continued in such a way that, by adding the single waves generated by the blasthole, it gave us a record of vibrations with the lowest level of vibrations.

In this paper vibratory crack response is compared to that produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils induced by natural events. These natural phenomena include changes in the water table, changes in soil moisture, and formation of ice lenses to name a few. Previous papers have compared vibratory responses of cracks to atmospheric effects such as those produced by the passage of weather fronts and daily changes in temperature and humidity. Periodicity of these atmospheric effects is on the order of a day to half a dozen days. Thus it is possible to observe atmospheric effects with measurement over a period of weeks to several months. On the other hand, crack response produced by volumetric changes in foundation soils occurs over a period of many months and/or may be seasonal in nature if not longer in the case of drought. Thus its measurement requires long periods of observation (many months to significant fractions of a year) or observation during critical seasons. Since it occurs over long periods of time, its observation may be obscured by climatologically induced crack response. These soil volume changes are compared with climatic data to describe the correlative nature of crack response in time with the soil volume change phenomena and likely climatic causes.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.

Qinling Tunnel is the longest tunnel in China. The rock stratum is very hard rock - intact mixed gneiss. At the beginning of the construction, drift-pilot excavation is very costly due to the use of regular drill and blasting methods. After tests on the acoustic impedance match between rock and explosive, watergel explosive, which has a high velocity of detonation and high brisance, has been used for hard rock blasting. In addition, different cut plans have been compared. It was found that four-large-hole cut is the most effective. And the number of drillholes and specific charge cut down and the average advance reaches more than 94% of the blastholes depth. Thus, the difficult problem of hard rock blasting in drift pilot is successfully solved, while safe and quick construction is guaranteed.

This paper presents a new method of formulation design for multi-component composite explosives. Based on the thermochemistry of the detonation process, the mathematic model of formulation design is established by optimization mathematics. Using the heat of detonation as target functions and taking the constraint conditions such as oxygen balance and costs etc into consideration, this model can provide an optimal solution quickly by means of personal computer. Using this method, the calculation and the simulation tests for a series of constituent sets and various constraint conditions can be conducted easily. In this way, the optimal formulation for the explosive can be determined, on the basis of the maximum heat of detonation and the lower cost.

Chemical explosives may become a key element in many of the in situ energy and mineral recovery methods under development. This paper discusses the potential role of explosives in deep rock mining for resource recovery. Several energy and mineral recovery programs described are an outgrowth of the Plowshare Program and Explosives R&D conducted as part of the AEC/ERDA mission at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. Several important aspects of the use of explosives in deep rock mining are reviewed. First, the status of knowledge of deep rock fracturing to create permeability underground is discussed. Completely contained blasting has not been a widely applied tool used in the mining industry. We conclude that data available on deep rock fracture is minimal and that the mechanisms that control the processes must be understood before technical and economic feasibility can be established. We also discuss the unusual problems in the selection of an explosive or blasting agent for deep rock applications including emphasis on the functioning at depth and safety aspects. Finally, a brief review of similar activities within the U.S. is given.

Post-blast assessment techniques using off-site data which includes location, seismograph and photographic data were discussed during the Blaster’s Weekend at this year’s ISEE Conference. Blast and property locations with commonly available GPS units allow for the spatial relationships surrounding the blasting to be documented. When distances are coupled with the charge weight per delay, the scaled distance can be calculated to any structure for either compliance with the rules, or to project limitations. When blasting seismograph data is obtained, the scaled distances are then able to be plotted against ground and air vibration levels for post-blast assessment purposes.

We have developed a method for predicting and controlling ground vibration from blasting using a rigorous scientific approach. The method is based upon the superposition of seismic waveforms generated by a single-hole free-face shot, recorded at seismographs deployed in an array that includes environmentally sensitlve locations. Waveforms generated by single-hole shots are shown to be reproducible. The waveforms for each of the sites are used to construct synthetic seismograms for delayed shots based upon linear superposition. A computer code systematically constructs the seismograms for the delayed shots, with incremental delays between holes of 1, 2, or 3 milliseconds (ms). A Fourier amplitude specs-rum is calculated for each synthetic seismogram and the spectra are plotted on a map in delay-frequency space, i.e., each row of the map represents the Fourier spectrum for a blast with a particular delay interval. Optimization blast design parameters for rounds used at surface mines, quarries or cast blast has taken on a new importance with the increased the cost of the explosives and electronic detonators. This paper addresses the fundamentals of blast design and optimization explosive energy utilized for fragmentation. This laboratory studies shows that one key variable-the strain energy set up in rock mass by blast vibration – can be used to predict the extent of damage done to the rock strata, the degree of fragmentation of the broken rock, and the velocity of the broken rock. It also shows how the dynamic strength of the rock strata is influence the fragmentation size distribution as well as the blastability.
