Changes in world mine and smelter supply sources of zinc have led to changes in zinc supply patterns in the United States during the past 3 years, 1970-72. The result has been a growing reliance on foreign sources of zinc metal to furnish an ever-increasing portion of expending domestic requirements. This review of fundamentals and historical developments is intended to provide background in order to place the future of the U.S. zinc industry fn perspective. The properties and uses of zinc are described. A new study on U.S. reserves is presented with description by geographical region and comparisons with older reserve data. The technology of the zinc industry from prospecting through refining is described with emphasis on the metallurgy involved in the various methods of smelting. Production, consumption, and imports are discussed and illustrated with graphs and tables to review the past and present patterns. Government actions affecting the industry are shown.

The industrial hygiene and safety aspects with internal combustion engines in mining systems is truly interdisciplinary and encompasses many fields such as mine ventilation, exhaust gas and particulate analyses, mine atmospheric environment monitoring, mathematical modeling of generation, dilution and dispersion of pollutants in ventilation systems, and engine testing and approval. This bibliography, therefore, is a compilation of references from interdisciplinary sources pertaining to diesels and related areas. Related areas are defined as those concerned with: (i) mine ventilation system design and operation; (ii) description, measurement, modeling and monitoring of mine atmosphere contaminants, and (iii) tests, standards, selection procedures, and operational practices for internal combustion engines in underground mines. References cited from source materials span the years 1900 to early 1977. Total number of references cited is 511. Subjective criteria governed the definition and selection of references. Therefore, this bibliography is not claimed to be all-inclusive nor does it purport to be an exhaustive search of all sources.

The Bureau of Mines has completed 4 yr of deep-bed filtration research comparing the efficiencies of granular magnesium oxide (MgO) and conventional filter sand in single- and dual-medium filters when filtering mineral-processing and mine waters. Bench and field evaluation tests were conducted using water types ranging from synthetic suspensions of asbestos, kaolin, metal hydroxides, and milled sand to process waters from magnetite beneficiation, iron ore flotation, granite cutting, and a steel mill. Even though the turbidity reductions were similiar, MgO filters were found to be advantageous when filtering water pretreated with alum because the volume throughput before breakthrough (turbidity > 1 NTU unit) was much more for the MgO filter than for the sand filter. Reduced head loss owing to the greater porosity of the MgO filter beds is potentially the most beneficial advantage in employing MgO as the filter medium, especially when filtering water pretreated with polymer flocculants. Granular MgO (periclase) is durable and can be backwashed Like sand. It is compatible with anthracite in a dual-medium filter and apparently is not poisoned by dissolved metals in the process water. No single solid-removal mechanism could be identified for the improved filtration observed with granular MgO.

This publication is a compilation of tested methods for the analyses of titanium tetrachloride, titanium sponge, and various intermediate materials and products. They are presented in concise form without the detail usually found in publication of new methods because many of them are modifications of well known procedures. The Electrometallurgical Experiment Station, Boulder City, Nev., has been developing titanium production methods since 1945. Most of this development was on a modified Kroll Process but also included work on sodium reduction and electrolytic methods. During these years a large variety of samples were analyzed. Most of the analytical problems were solved using published methods or modifications of the same. At the start, there were no published procedures for analyzing titanium sponge using spectrochemical methods. A great deal of study was given to testing several of the well known techniques, and some of them, such as direct sparking of the metal, proved to be completely unsatisfactory. Solution-spark techniques were finally tried, and satisfactory procedures were developed for some of the more common impurities. These spectrochemical methods were then put into routine use for several months before their publication.2/ Some new modifications have been made, and techniques have been developed to determine other impurities found in titanium sponge and tetrachloride. All spectrochemical methods used in 1954 are included in this publication.

The Bureau of Hines and industry (mining and private) have studied the placement of hydraulic sandfill in deep-vein mines to identify existing problems and to develop techniques to strengthen the support characteristics of the sandfill. The hydraulic sandfill system, physical properties of typical classified mill tailings, and properties of sandfill modified by various techniques are discussed. Computer analysis has defined the support capability of various sandfills using actual mine field data as a reference base. High-modulus sandfill can provide adequate support in deep-vein mines to alleviate rock and pillar stresses and to reduce rock-burst incidence.

METHODS for measuring relative permeability as a valid function of saturation were compared by the. Bureau of Mines, using core samples from representative oil-productive California formations, from the Bartlesville sand in Oklahoma, and from synthetic samples. Measurements for gas-oil systems were made by steady-state dynamic, unsteady-state displacement and two stationary-phase methods. Measurements for water-oil systems were made by the unsteady-state displacement method. As the ratio rather than individual relative permeabilities is measured by the last method, three methods for calculating individual relative permeabilites from their measured ratio were compared for gas-oil systems and two methods for water-oil systems. Errors arising from capillary discontinuities, such as the end effect and stabilized-zone flow, are discussed and evaluated; possible errors rocs arising from turbulant flow are also examined. The inapplicability of non-steady-state methods for water-oil systems that are not definitely oil-wet is discussed in detail. Measurements of relative permeability to both gas and oil can be made quickly and accurately by the steady-state dynamic method when rates of flow of the two phases are sufficient to minimize the capillary discontinuity at the outflow end of the sample. At such rates relative permeability-saturation measurements are essentially independent of the rate of flow. The steady-state method wits modified by a dispersion section at the inflow end of the sample acid designated tie dispersed-feed method.

"Acid mine drainage can be controlled by water treatment, retardation of the pyrite oxidation reaction system, or enhanced prediction that allows preventive action to be taken. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in each of these areas; the results of this research are summarized in the eight papers that comprise this volume. Field work to evaluate overburden analysis, alkaline injection, and bactericidal control of acid formation is described, along with two new inexpensive methods to treat acid mine water. These papers were prepared for an acid mine drainage technology transfer meeting held in Pittsburgh, PA, on April 3 and 4, 1985. INTRODUCTIONAcid drainage from coal mines is one of the most persistent industrial pollution problems in the United States. Over 5,000 miles of streams and rivers are adversely affected, primarily by underground mines that have been abandoned for decades. Meanwhile, at active mining operations and at sites where mining occurred after 1977, discharge water must be treated to meet fairly stringent regulatory limits--at a cost to the industry of over $1 million per day.The Bureau of Mines has a special responsibility to facilitate integration of mining and mineral processing with environmental safeguards. This responsibility is twofold: the development of techniques to reduce or eliminate environmental degradation, and the improvement of existing pollution control processes to make them more efficient and more cost effective. Research in acid mine drainage exemplifies the Bureau's concern for these environmental aspects of mining.This collection of papers summarizes much of the Bureau's recent research on acid mine drainage and will give the reader a sense of where the research is headed, in addition to providing details regarding new technology and recently acquired knowledge. "The main purpose in the compilation of accident statistics is to reveal conditions that may result in injury to persons or property so that remedial measures may be applied. For practical reasons it is usually found necessary to restrict inquiry to conditions which actually have caused personal injury, and to omit those which nay, but have not yet, resulted in damage, Fortunately or unfortunately, there is a sufficient number of the former to indicate the existence of hazards so numerous as to require all of the attention which the industry can devote to the subject.Two years ago, the Bureau of 'mines, in cooperation with the National Safety Council, undertook an intensive campaign to obtain more complete and satisfactory information regarding mine accidents than had theretofore been available. Since 1911 the bureau had been receiving annual summaries from all companies operating metal mines, showing, in a general way, the number and causes of accidents that occurred during the preceding year and the number of men employed at the mines. Monthly summaries of fatal accidents at coal mines were received from the state inspectors, showing the number of deaths attributed to each of 22 main causes of accidents, Information for individual coal mines was not furnished.While this information, nation-wide in scope, is indispensable because it epitomizes the progress or retrogression in the industry as a whole, and serves as a background of specialized studies, yet certain classes of acci¬dents, for example, those that are more or less peculiar to specific districts or mines, require an analysis in greater detail than is possible on the sole basis afforded by the annual summaries.The need for more specific information was realized some years ago in the State of Pennsylvania in connection with the administration of the workmen's compensation law, The mining industry is well acquainted with the val¬uable studies of accidents, particularly nonfatal accidents, in the mines of that State being conducted by Mr. Rush N. The mechanical properties of coal are often represented by the orthotropicmaterial model, which consists of nine elastic constants. The material symmetries involved are found in coal primarily because of the natural process by which it was formed. In this thesis the material properties of five U.S. coals, as obtained from cubical testing, are examined, using as a basis for comparison the assumption of the orthotropic material model. An analysis is performed on each set of coal material data in order to examine its conformability to other, less complex material models, these being the transversely isotropic model consisting of five elastic constants and the 'isotropic model consisting of two elastic constants. In addition, the material properties of two American shales are analyzed, based on the assumption that they comply with the transversely isotropic model. An analysis similar to that performed on the coal material is applied to the shale in order to determine the conformity of its material properties to the isotropic model.

This paper is one of a aeries being published by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and practices used in mining and preparing crushed stone for market. Performance, in terms of units of work or tons produced per machine and per operator man-hour, is given whenever that information can be obtained. Direct operating costs are useful for comparing different methods and are included if available. In addition to descriptions of equipment and methods used the Bureau considered it desirable to discuss the engineering reasons for the choices that have been made, This paper is particularly concerned with the operation of the Liberty quarry and plant of the Campbell Limestone Co, The plant is in Pickens County, adjacent to the main line of the Southern Railway, and is about 18 miles west of Greenville, S, C. The rapid growth of the metallurgical, chemical, and allied industries on the Pacific coast just prior to and during the war caused a sudden increase in the demand for refractories, which was the immediate cause of a revival in interest in refractory clays available on the Pacific coast, particularly in the Pacific Northwest. Population increases and shortage of shipping facilities caused an increase in the amount of various ceramic materials and products used and produced on the Pacific coast, with accompanying demand for information regarding sources of clay. In an effort to supply part of this information, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines, University of Washington, started a program in 1944 to test the refractory and other properties of clays from seven Pacific Northwest deposits that had been drilled and sampled as part of the Bureau of Mines alumina from clay investigation. Figure 1 shows the location of these deposits.

The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines information circular (Ie) is to discuss how job analysis methods taken from different disciplines can be used together to form a more complete picture of jobs in the mining industry. "Job analysis" is a term used by many researchers, but use of the term is far from standardized. Authors of papers on this subject often state that there is confusion in how or why jobs are to be analyzed, what the resulting information is to be used for, and what the "job analysis" actually means. The process of breaking a job into elemental tasks and analyzing them is used to determine what skills and knowledge are needed to perform a given job, to improve efficiency, and to develop safer job procedures. All are valid reasons to analyze jobs, but the methods used to accomplish the analyses may be very different. In order to create a more complete picture of a job, it may be useful to incorporate methods and information from different areas of study rather than choosing one method for analysis.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTFatalities from falls of roof and coal are responsible for the death of more than 1,000 miners annually in the bituminous coal mines of the United States or practically one—half of the total fatalities in and about these mines. The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal—mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years.The necessity for studying falls of roof and coal becomes apparent by referring to the following data from a table by Adams and Chenoweth:3"

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system, or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

This study compiles data on the zircon resources of the Pacific Northwest States, Alaska, and California, to determine the productive capability of industrial concerns to make ductile zirconium and hafnium, and to investigate markets for the nonmetallic products of zircon. West coast zircon resources are large but mostly marginal to submarginal. Development of a stable and profitable zircon mining industry on the west coast will depend upon recovery and utilization of the other associated heavy minerals needed by regional and national markets. The west coast has the only completely integrated facility for processing zircon sand to reactor-grade zirconium and hafnium and for making fabricated products from these metals. The future of the zirconium metal industry appears to be good because of increased use of the metal for nuclear propulsion and power-generating plants.

This report describes research by the Bureau of Mines on alternative materials-handling strategies for reducing the costs and incidence of back injuries in low-seam coal mines. Strategies recommended for redesigning materials-handling tasks include elimination of tasks, mechanization of tasks, and matching lifting tasks to the physical capabilities of underground miners. The report also discusses other methods that can be used by management to reduce the costs associated with back injuries.

Water-swelling fluormicas and fluormontmorillonoids were synthesized and described. They were found predominantly in the system Mg0 - MgF2 - Si02, with varying amounts of Li+ or Na+, Some water-swelling synthetic minerals were prepared with only strontium or lead in the twelvefold position, Water- swelling compounds containing either K+ or Ba+ were not found. The synthesized water-swelling products were shown by electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and chemical analysis to be typically two-silica-layer, platy compounds, Except for the complete substitution of fluoride for hydroxyl, the compounds were similar to the natural micas or montmorillonites. The stability and properties of the compounds were further established by electrodialysis, by differential thermal analysis, and by anion and cation exchange methods. Fluoride in the interlayer positions was nonexchangeable except through decomposition of the product. Exchanging the sodium or the lithium of the synthetic fluormicas or fluormontmorillonoids with potassium ion, particularly those derived from KOH provided a product from which a completely inorganic paper of extraordinary flexibility was fabricated. This paper had excellent mechanical and electrical properties except for water adsorption and a high power factor. Neither of these problems was solved during this investigation. However, papers with dielectric strength from 1,500 to 5,000 volts per mil were readily fabricated, particularly from the lithium containing fluormicas or fluormontmorill onoids.

This Bureau of Mines report presents several factors that currently enter into the design, manufacture, and testing of windows and lenses used in explosion-proof enclosures. Emphasis is also given to the sealing concepts for lenses. Criteria for adhesives and sealants are suggested based on the survivability of an explosion-proof enclosure as a structure, rather than upon the minimum material properties of its constituents. Procedures for surface preparation of adherends are also discussed.

Modifications of the conventional method of preparing ductile vanadium metal by calcium reduction of V2 05 in a bomb were explored for clues to a more economical procedure . The modifications examined included ( 1 ) omitting the gas purge of the bomb ordinarily used for eliminating atmospheric nitrogen , (2 ) using low- grade vanadium feed materials , ( 3 ) using alternative reductants , such as aluminum , magnesium , and silicon , and reductant mixtures , and ( 4 ) bomb refining of aluminothermic metal produced in open- vessel reductions . The most promising modification appeared to be bomb refining , using calcium to purify vanadium metal -- of low aluminum but high oxygen content-- prepared by open- vessel aluminothermic reduction of vanadium pentoxide .
