A highly flexible laboratory-scale fluidized-bed reactor was designed, constructed, and successfully operated continuously at temperatures up to 1,300° C during an investigation of thermal methods for decomposing gypsum. This report discusses briefly the many problems encountered in developing the 10-inch-diameter reactor and describes its design and construction in sufficient detail to enable other research organizations to build a comparable unit. The reactor consists of a 10-inch-inside-diameter vertical tube which can be varied from 6 to 10 feet high; it is formed from 2-and 3-foot sections of silicon carbide pipe. The tube is surrounded by a 3-inch heating space formed by an outer 4.5-inch-thick circular wall of insulating firebrick. A cone-shaped fluidizing chamber is bolted to the bottom of the reactor. Fluidizing gas enters through the bottom of the cone, and ore is introduced by means of a screw feeder connected to an inlet located just above the gas port. A silicon carbide overflow tube of 1.25-inch inside diameter extends upward into the reactor. The depth of the bed is controlled by substituting different lengths of overflow tube. Twin dust-recovery systems, each composed of a cyclone and Fiberglas filter, are attached to two gas outlets at the top of the reactor tube. The reactor is designed for research on both exothermic and highly endothermic reactions. It can be fired externally by means of four natural gas burners that jet tangentially into the annular space at the base of the reactor. Alternatively, it can be fired internally, using a mixture of air or oxygen and natural gas as the fluidizing medium. A separate instrument panel contains flowmeters, manometers, an automatic program controller, and a multiple-point recorder for printing a record of the temperatures measured by thermocouples located at critical points in the reactor.

A process for recovering manganese from open-hearth steel-plant slags was investigated. The proposed method of accomplishing this is indicated by the flow diagram in figure 1. Mixtures of open-hearth, steel-plant flush slags and limestone, so proportioned as to have molar [CaO -3P205] ratios of approximately 2, were fired at approximately 2,400° F. in an oxidizing atmosphere and then cooled slowly. This treatment produced a clinker consisting principally of two solid phases comprised of (1) various combinations of the oxides of manganese, iron, aluminum, and magnesium, probably in spinel complexes, and (2) a dicalcium silicate phase, which contains the phosphorus. Reduction of these clinkers with hydrogen or with gaseous mixtures containing CO, CH4, and other hydrocarbons at about 1,300° F. formed manganous oxide as well as varying amounts of ferrous oxide and iron. Carbon monoxide and mixtures of hydrogen and carbon monoxide effectively reduced the clinkers but also gave higher proportions of soluble iron when the manganese was extracted from the reduced clinkers by leaching at about 80° F. with ammonium carbonate solutions containing 26 to 28 percent ammonia and 15 to 26 percent carbon dioxide. It is believed that the manganese is in solution as an ammonia-manganese complex. Concentrations of about 90 grams of manganese per liter were obtained by batch countercurrent procedures. By distilling 50 percent of the ammonia, the ammonia-manganese complex was decomposed, and approximately 90 percent of the manganese was precipitated as the carbonate with the simultaneous precipitation of 15 to 30 percent of the iron, the larger amounts of iron precipitating in the continuous tests. The manganese-iron ratio in the product could be increased either by recycling more manganese from the distillation to the extraction or by aerating the liquor to purge it of iron before, rather than after, the distillation step. Calcination of the pelletized manganese carbonate in an oxidizing stmosphere at 2,000° F. or above gave a final product, Mn304, resistant to crushing and apparently possessing the other physical properties essential in a ferromanganese blast-furnace feed.

"INTRODUCTION These safety standards for anthracite mines have been prepared for use as a guide for Federal inspectors. They are a revision of ""Tentative Inspection Standards for Anthracite Mines,"" published as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7282 issued in May 1944 and used as a guide in Federal inspections. No provision made in these safety standards should be construed or operate to nullify any existing State statutes; they are intended to supplement the State statutes in the interest of increased mine safety. Mines are inspected in accordance with the Federal Coal-Mine Inspection and Investigation Act of 1941, Public Law 49, 77th Congress, H. R. 2082. Any unusual hazard noted by an inspector and not covered by these standards will be discussed in the inspection report, and suitable remedial procedure will be recommended.ARTICLE I. - SURFACE STRUCTURESSection 1. Breaker and cleaning plant.Electric switches and controls in breakers and cleaning plants should be enclosed.Where coal is dumped at or near air-intake openings, reasonable provisions should be made to prevent the dust from entering the mine.Section 2. Volume III of the final report examines the indication versus interruption procedures used on motion-drive power equipment, with emphasis on surface excavators. The report begins with a review of the electromechanical acid conversion used with the Ward-Leonard control system. Protection criteria for the drive-system components are then discussed. Fault sources and fault calculations for both the ac supply source and dc power loop are introduced to assist in discussing indication and interruption procedures. The subject is then expanded to examine the dynamic process of the machine and determine the effects of fault current and position of the machine to allow for an orderly shutdown. With this analysis, possible indication an interruption procedures are given for the four-quadrant duty cycle of excavators. The report concludes by introducing other mining operations that utilize similar motion-drive systems and also static (solid-state) drives and recommends further research in these areas, as well as a more detailed examination of the dynamic fault analysis for excavators.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency of 243 miners. These workers were from eight underground coal mines in the eastern United States. The objectives of the study were (1) to gather information on skill levels, since all miners in the study had prior instruction and opportunity to practice donning the apparatus, and (2) to summarize a quality control procedure useful in conducting periodic evaluations of donning proficiency. The sampling procedure used proved to be both reasonable and efficient in gathering information on training effectiveness. It also provided a good statistical base for making informed site-specific decisions regarding SCSR training needs. Results from the observed samples at each of the eight mines indicate a wide variability across sites. The rate at which miners failed to isolate their lungs varied from 3.3 to 40.0 pet. Concomitantly, proficiency rates (miners either performing adequately or demonstrating a perfect 3 + 3 sequence) ranged from 13.3 to 63.3 pet.

This report summarizes the cost of U.S, mining and milling industry compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim water quality guidelines for waste discharges. Applicable excerpts from Public Law 92-500 are stated and interpreted in conjunction with the guidelines being used for implementation of the law. Over 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applications for discharge permits were used to develop the quality and quantity data base needed to estimate the cost to comply with EPA guidelines, Cost of three basic treatment methods were considered: Aeration, addition of lime, and sedimentation. From the process design, cost-capacity graphs were developed to consider maximum flow rate, maxi lime addition, and average flow rates. The graphical method used in this evaluation should provide a reasonable guide to the effect of waste treatment and, therefore, Public Law 92-500 and corresponding EPA guidelines on the mineral processing industry. The cost of complying with the EPA guidelines will have the effect of prompting the mining industry to minimize the production of waste water and of undertaking some additional treatment, Two case studies are presented to illustrate efforts that might be fruitful for minimizing waste water production and for treatment of combinations of acid mine drainage, mill wastes, and metallurgical process wastes when treatment is deemed necessary.

"Although the advantages of large-capacity air receivers for underground mines are plainly evident from published information about various installations in the United States and abroad, details of their construction are not generally known in this country., Ordinary present-day air-compressor installations servicing mining machines are designed to supply air at a specified pressure in sufficient quantity to meet the peak demand of the mine,2/ although this demand may exist for only a few minutes out of 24 hours and, as usually happens, eventually exceeds the capacity of the compressor. Most of the receivers provided with these compressors (to a certain degree of standardi¬zation) are capable of storing a volume of air approximately equal to that compressed in 1 minute by the machine.3, 4/ As a result, during peak-load periods the compressor operates at full load capacity without maintaining kick-off pressure. At other periods of the work cycle, production of compressed air is intermittent.At least one large mine5/ has adopted large-capacity receivers to reduce wear on its air-compressing system caused by the sudden demand of peak loads. Under the old system, the compressors jumped suddenly from half speed to full speed; boilers furnishing steam to the compressors were taxed heavily to provide the increased requirements of power; and machines using the air, among which were four large hoists, were required to operate at 65 pounds per square inch rather than at the 90 pounds per square inch for which the compressors were regulated. Operation of air machines, especially drills, at pressures lower than those for which they were designed decreases their efficiency and increases maintenance costs. In addition, air that comes directly from the compressors has had little opportunity to cool and dry enroute.6./ As a result, quantities of compressor lubricant and water are carried into the machines that use the air. When expansion occurs in the cylinder or turbine of such engines, the temperature of the air drops, and this oil and water is precipitated. The water washes away lubricating oils in the machine, causing poor performance and high cost of maintenance; the compressor oil, in addition to being a poor lubricant for compresed-air engines, exerts a corrosive action on gaskets and rubber hoses.7/Reduction of peak demands on air compressors by large receivers lowers power costs by establishing more nearly constant load factors,8/ and in some cases by permitting the use of smaller compressor capacity.8,9/Load factor is the ratio of average demand to maximum demand; a low load factor costs money.10/Elimination of high-peak demands raises the load factor by making the average and the maximum demand more nearly equal. Further savings may be made possible by large receivers where their use permits charging to be done at night in regions having lower power rates during that period.11/Where ordinary receivers are used, compressor breakdowns cause immediate work stoppages in the mine owing to lack of air. Similarly, the capacity of a large receiver has been known to permit uninterrupted work in the mine until the compressors have been returned to service.9/Large-capacity receivers, either steel-tank or underground rock-chamber, offer a practical solution of many existing problems by providing a sufficient reserve of compressed air within the pressure range required for efficient operation of machines to level off peak demands on the compressor. The com¬pressors operate when the demand has reduced the pressure in the receiver below the regulating pressure and until all air used from the receiver has been replaced. It has been found possible in at least two mines,8.9/ one of which the author has visited, to entirely eliminate one compressor and to obtain more efficient performance from the remaining one by the construction of an underground coal-chamber receiver.8/"

This report deals with the effectiveness and economy of installing mine timbers treated with preservatives in long-life service locations. Early in the present century, when mine timbers and labor were plentiful, it was not general practice to install treated timbers in such places. Because national sources of good mine timber are declining steadily, the mining industry must now conserve timber. Moreover, the cost of installing and replacing mine timbers has been rising. Therefore, even the simplest of treatments can be expected to give some return on the investment when applied to timbers that are to be installed in relatively permanent locations. Better methods of treatment will produce better returns. In a service test of maple timbers treated by the hot-and cold-bath method and installed in main haulageways of the Athens mine of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., Negaunee, Mich., zinc chloride-treated timbers had an average useful life of 13.3 years; borax-treated timbers, 11.2 years; and sodium fluoride-treated timbers, 7.7 years. Untreated timbers used as controls had an average useful life of 3.8 years.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a field study to assess the performance of various chain pillar configurations in terms of gate road entry sta-bility. Vibrating wire stressmeters (VWS's) were installed in four consecutive gate road chain pillars. Field data collected during panel retreat were analyzed to gain a better understanding of the mechanics of vertical load redistribution in gate road chain pillars as it relates to ground control problems. Several different pillar configurations were investigated including abutment-yield and yield-abutment-yield designs. "Early in World War II it became apparent that the known bauxite re- serves might not be adequate to supply the demands of the American aluminum-producing industry, as the transportation of bauxite from abroad to this country might easily be interfered with by hostile action. Consequently, the Bureau of Mines set up an intensive, well-integrated program for the production of cell-grade alumina from low-grade domestic ores. This pro-gram of investigation covered the production of alumina from clay, alumite, red mud, and other low- and marginal-grade ores. In line with the Bureau's usual policy of conservation of natural resources, it was decided that the investigation should be extended to cover the production of alumina and other valuable byproducts from aluminum dross.Statistical information showed that during the year 1943-44, an average of 2,900 tons of aluminum dross was generated monthly. This dross, after partial removal of free metal, had an average metallic aluminum content of approximately 9 percent. Some of this dross was produced by the melting of alloyed aluminum; but a large proportion 1,700 out of 2,900 tons - was generated by two producers of primary aluminum, and the dross did not contain an great proportion of alloying metals. Compared with dross from other sources, this 60 percent of the country's capacity can be assumed to have relatively uniform composition. Moreovcr, the problem of collection and distribution can be minimized because of the relatively small number of plants included in the organization of these two producers of virgin metal.Except for large pieces of metallic aluminum that easily can be mechanically separated for remelting, this dross has been discarded and scrapped. Inasmuch as chemical analyses show that the alumina content of dross is far higher-than ordinary ores - 111 percent alumina equivalent in dross compared to 57 percent alumina in bauxite - aluminum dross is a far richer source of aluminum than any known naturally occurring ores. The discard, of this waste material during the war and reconversion periods would be unsound economically. The work reported herein describes tests at the College Park Station of the Bureau of Mines on the recovery of metal, alumina, ammonia, methane, and abrasive-grade corundum from dross."

"INTRODUCTION Three representative lots of ore wore obtained from the Aguila minim district in Arizona during the Bureau's exploration of manganese deposits there. Since only selectively mined ore from this district will meet commercial-grade specifications, the ores were studied to determine their amenability to concentration.Although the purpose of the investigation was to determine the possibilities of the district as a source of commercial-grade manganese, testing was sufficiently comprehensive to indicate the response of the ores to several different types of treatment. Many data of secondary importance have been omitted, end only the more pertinent tests are presented in detail.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to. Metals Reserve Company was ferro-grade manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., O.18 percent; Al12O3, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.O percent iron, and. 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premiums were paid for manganese con¬tent over 48 percent and iron content under 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing loss than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than U. percent. silica plus alumina.. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that the maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined.."

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents an evaluation of the coal mining industry's impact on the economy of Pike County, KY. A software package called IMPLAN was used to perform the analysis. The results of this study show that coal mining was the primary income producing industry in Pike County in 1990, accounting for about 46% of the county's Total Industry Output, and 21% of the total employment.. Coal production in that year amounted to 29.6 M mt (32.6 M st). Two alternate economic scenarios were developed to study the potential effects of changing coal market conditions on the county. Scenario A assumes market changes result in a coal production increase of 4.5 M mt/yr (5.0 M st/yr), and scenario B assumes a decrease of 4.5 M mt/yr (5.0 M st/yr). Scenario A would result in a 15.3% rise in the value of Pike County's Total Industry Output, adding a total of 1,663 jobs (+6.1%) in all sectors in the county. Scenario B would have the opposite effect, decreasing the Total Industry Output and employment by identical amounts. Such knowledge would allow local and regional officials to anticipate the economic and social impacts of shifts in coal production, and plan accordingly to mitigate impending changes.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. The objective of this work was to define jet fan performance in d variety of large cross-section underground mine applications and to develop guidelines for thin performance in open airways, dead headings, and multiple face areas. Measurements include common ventilation instruments, continuous recording remote electronic anemometers to measure air velocity, and sulfur hexaflouride tracer gas with chromatograph analysis to determine dilution rates and air recirculation. For open airways the following were determined: Large jet fans are leas efficient in smaller airways, but quite effective in larger open airways for achieving both uniformity end greater air entrainment, when inclined about 10° or elevated. For dead headings the following were determined: The jet fan must be placed against the rib of the heeding closest to the incoming airstream from the crosscut or recirculation will increase. The fan should be placed at the pillar corner to increase airflow. As the fan is moved closer inby, recirculation increases. Larger fans promote recirculation. Inclining fans about 12° improves airflow in large headings. For face areas the following were found: For panels having uncontrolled airflow, the fan should be placed in the incoming airflow, about one pillar inby, and directed diagonally across the faces. For panels having narrower rooms and controlled airflow, the fan should be placed alongside the panel side in the first room so as to direct or intersect the incoming airflow at the next entry or crosscut.

The Federal Bureau of mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted exploratory investigations and geologic mapping in the Wishbone Hill district of the Matanuska coalfield almost continuously from 1942 through 1958. These investigations delineated reserves of high-volatile bituminous coal necessary to supply the rapidly expanding military and civilian requirements in the Anchorage area. This report describes the program conducted by the Bureau of Mines from 1949 through 1958, and briefly summarizes previous investigations, the results of which have already been published. The coal-bearing structure on both the north and south limbs of the prominent Wishbone Hill syncline was explored by 8,719 feet of churn drilling and 25,460 feet of diamond-core drilling. A total of 33 holes were drilled ranging in depth from 60 to 2,114 feet. To supplement the drilling operations, bulldozer and dragline trenching were undertaken at key locations; about 25,000 cubic yards of dragline trench were excavated in the vicinity of the old Premier mine.

Coal has been transported by belt conveyors in mines for many years; however, only since the beginning of the general mechanization period have complete transportation system of this type been employed. Aside from my complete belt-conveyor transportation systems, belt conveyors are frequently used in conjunction with other transportation. Many early installations, for the most part, were made without standards as a guide. As a result, some States have outlined certain requirements based more or less on experience following mine fires. Correlation of these regulations should result in more uniformity in connection with standardization of regulations. The National Electrical manufacturers Association has published standards for mining-belt-conveyor installations2/ that should be helpful to the coal-mining industry generally. Bureau of Mines Schedule 2F3/ requires certain controls for permissible-belt- conveyor drives, and similar requirements are listed in Bureau of Mines bulletin 514.4/ Committees of the American Mining Congress have prepared much valuable information concerning operation of belt conveyors, and a subcommittee on fire-resistant belting has been active. 5/

The purpose of this publication is to describe the power-distribution system of the mine and refinery of the Duval Sulphur & Potash Company at Carlsbad, N. Mex. This distribution system has been excellently predesigned to meet requirements and fit special conditions encountered at the property. In presenting the material, the authors point out various features that would be desirable for incorporation in other systems under similar conditions. Central location of switchgear in pressurized vaults and ventilation of such equipment with filtered air prevent salt accumulations and contribute to trouble-free operation. The simplification of power-distribution circuits and overload protection, as a result of centralization of switchgear, the use of individual control circuits enclosed in conduit (which aids troubleshooting), and central location of control panels, are factors which contribute to efficient, safe operation. Those features are applicable to many operations where fire or explosion hazards are encountered, or where dusty conditions may exist, as well as in operations where numerous individual drives are involved.

Rapid, sensitive, and precise methods of determing major, minor and trace constituents of oilfield brines are needed. Several methods have been developed or adapted by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Petroleum Research Center, Bartlesville, Okla. The following methods are described in this report: Spectrophotometric and volumetric for iodides and bromides; potentiometric for pH, alkalinity, acidity, borate boron, total boron, and organic boron; gravimetric for potassium; disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) volumetric for total hardness, calcium, and magnesium; spectrophotometric for fluorides; and color comparison .for arsenic. Adequate sensitivity, precision, and accuracy were obtained for each method. The Bureau of Mines pioneered in research on the analysis of oilfield waters (2, 46, 47).6 However, several of these early procedures were quite time consuming. Also, they did not include methods for determining trace and minor constituents of brines.

1. The Lower Freeport and Lower Kittanning beds are the most important beds in Clearfield County, Pa., from the standpoint of production. The Lower Kittanning bed has the largest remaining recoverable reserves of any of the beds in the county. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 1,909 million short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 1,177 million short tons is in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in some beds were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.
