This paper describing the mining methods employed and setting forth prevailing, costs at the property, is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines dealing with properties in various mining districts of the United States and Canada. The Vipond mine is a gold property located at Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and operated by the Vipond Consolidated Mines (Ltd.). For the past fiscal year (ended July 31. 1930) ore was mined and milled at the rate of 310 tons per day, and the value of the bullion produced was $896,397.61.

This document contains most of the materials needed to use the exercise. The main part of the document is the instructor's copy. The Bureau of Mines, under the sponsorship of the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office, conducted a laboratory-scale hydrogen safety study which determined several combustion characteristics of hydrogen diffusion flames. Experiments show that ambient air may enter the top of a hydrogen flare stack when the hydrogen flow is low. A new concept, supported by photographic evidence, predicts that diffusion flames burning in air on a wide, upright pipe (stack) and fed with slow, upward flows of buoyant gas will induce a downward flow of air along the walls of the pipe that can support combustion within the pipe. Predicted flamedip limits agree roughly with experimental values determined on 6-, 12-, and 18-inch-diameter stacks and increase with increasing stack diameter. Measurements were made of the limiting flow at which a hydrogen diffusion flame blows out in still air. By means of an empirical application of the critical boundary 8 velocity gradient concept, these data lead to a blowout limit of about 10 reciprocal seconds for a hydrogen diffusion flame. Burning rates of large hydrogen diffusion flames ranging from about 0.03 to 1 ft/sec were used to predict approximate flame heights on flare stacks. Temperatures of larger hydrogen diffusion flames up to about 3,600° F were observed, but the most representative value appears to be about 2,600° F. It was found that crosswinds do not strip significant amounts of unburned hydrogen from its diffusion flame and that water-cooled flare stacks are not likely to be damaged when flame is blown back into them by opposing winds.

The ferberite district of Boulder County, Colo., has been an important producer of tungsten since 1900. During World War I, high prices for tungston concontrates resulted in a brief period of intense activity, and the production in 1917 was 2,707 tons of 60 percent W03 concentrates. Production declined thereafter, and in 19.2 the tungsten produced in Boulder County represented about 4 percent of the Nation's output, being exceeded only by the scheelite production in California, Nevada, and Idaho. Boulder County has boon an important source: of tungsten in the Korean emergency; the present report does not describe this recent activity, as it will be covered by a future publication. Tungsten occurs in small ore shoots of narrow and irregular veins. Most of the ore shoots have been found outcropping on the surface. Core drilling; has been used by the larger operators to explore for new veins and to locate extensions of known veins.

Solvent-extraction characteristics of dodecyl phosphoric acid (DDPA) were investigated to determine its potential as a fractional or selective extract-ant for individual elements in a rare-earth-yttrium mixture. The DDPA is an effective extractant for splitting rare-earth mixtures into light and heavy subgroups. Yttrium normally extracts with the heavy rare-earth elements but may be shifted toward an extraction sequence with the light rare-earth elements by increasing the pH. Elements in the light and heavy ends of the rare-earth series can be separated from middle-group rare-earth elements by using diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) as an aqueous phase counter-extractant. Hydrogen-ion dependency of the distribution coefficients differs from that reported for similar systems at tracer-level concentration.

A primary, function of the Bureau of Mines is to encourage elimination of waste and the most profitable use of mineral raw materials. In line with this objective the Bureau has frequently stressed the importance of waste utilization at stone quarries. From time to tine studies both technical and economic in character have been made of problems pertaining to the most efficient use of natural, stone, particularly that which may be classed as a by-product of the higher grades of dimension stone. Every quarry producing ornamental or building stone yields large quantities of material that for one reason or another is unsuited for high-grade products, even though a great deal of work has been expended upon it more or less unavoidably. It is obviously good judgment to sell this odd-sized or off-grade stone at whatever price can be obtained rather than to spend more money to place it on the waste dump. In many cases, however, a really profitable side line has been developed.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 377 natural gas samples from 19 States and two foreign countries. Of this total, 373 samples were collected during calendar year 1970. The remaining four samples were collected during previous years, but releases granting per-mission to publish the analyses were not received until 1970. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Twelve previous publications have presented the results of 9,050 gas analyses prior to 1970. While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

This Bureau of Mines report examines the percentage depletion allowance rate structure in relation to several criteria that are indicative of U.S. mineral import dependence. These criteria are the minerals considered as strategic and critical for stockpiling purposes, the ratio of reserves to forecast cumulative demand (1976-2000) for selected minerals, and the U.S. net import reliance as a percentage of apparent consumption (1978), also for selected minerals in general, it was Found that there does exist a direct, although not perfect, relationship between the percentage depletion allowance rates and the degree of import dependence as indicated by these three criteria. The higher percentage rates tend to he associated with those minerals for which the United States is, or will likely he, heavily dependent on foreign sources. In addition, a basic discussion of the mineral depletion allowance is provided, including numerical examples illustrating the computation of the allowance under several assumptions. Also, the percentage depletion allowance rates for individual minerals are tabulated.

[Health and safety hazards from contamination of the atmosphere in places frequented by persons depend to a considerable extent on whether the contaminating agent possesses sense-perceptive properties which will give warning of its presence before it '.an create harmful conditions. If a distinct and easily recognized warning is given in advance of harmful conditions, hazards ace mitigated, but if warning properties are inadequate or absent, the hazards are augmented. When evaluating the hazard presented by a potentially harmful substance used under conditions of possible escape into the air of places frequented by persons, it is therefore necessary to consider the warning properties of the substance along with ether pertinent information such as toxicity, inflammability, physical properties, and mode of use. If the contaminating agent inherently lacks warning; properties it may be possible to impart them by adding to the hazardous substance a small quantity of a relatively harmless substance which has a high warning intensity.]

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. A large number of operators of various industries in the United States do not appear to realize the great returns in dollars and cents which result from intelligently directed safety work . Managers of co 1 mines , metal mines , open-pit mines , quarries , steel mills , cement mills , oil rei meries , iron works , or other industrial operations , should by all means realize the great waste resulting from accidents , in order to appreciate the necessity for a continuous accident -prevention policy . While the prevention of accidents is worth while from the humanitarian standpoint alone , it has an equally important economic side , and before our mining industrial operations will be made as safe as they should be , it is apparent that this dollars and cents viewpoint must be given full recognition in order to bring before many of the men who run the industries the great importance of this phase of industrial management . : There is a tendency upon the part of the opera or who has not given thought to the cost of accidents ( and there are many mining operators of this type) to insure his company against compensation losses and against catastrophes for which he can secure insurance , and think he has done his duty ar an executive . Even though industrial operations were not compelled to pay compensation , and even if the management were not moved by humanitarian motives to try to stop accidents , it would pay many times over to carry on accident prevention work vigorously and continuously. : In some parts of the United States , the state compensation and insurance requirements are such that the operator does not receive a reduction in his insurance rate per men employed upon having made safety installations or upon having achieved a reduction of accidents in his plant . Under such conditions the management frequently does not feel encouraged to emert much effort in bettering the accident rate . However , when the responsible officials of a company realize the much greater harm to an operation which results from doing no accident - prevention work , and the great benefit in reduced costs which usually follows effective safety work , they should be inclined to do almost everything possible to reduce accidents , regardless of considerations as to accident compensations . There are enough indirect costs resulting from accidents to wreck many types of business ; excessive accidents result in disorganization and failure , while immunity from accidents usually means a smoothly running efficient organization .

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is evaluating water spray additives for the purpose of improving respirable dust control during coal mining operations, with particular emphasis on the longwall shearer. Recent field tests of surfactant-polymer reagents at two production longwall operations have shown favorable respirable dust reductions compared with water sprays containing no additive. Gravimetric dust samples obtained by a technician downwind of the shearer while following or preceding the machine showed dust reductions in the range of about 40% to 60% for some of the reagent formulations compared with using water alone. Three polymers were tested: two polyethylene oxide compounds of different molecular weight and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC). All were effective for dust reduction, and two were cost effective when used in combination with sodium di(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate surfactant. How-ever, the use of these reagents requires the longwall operator to be more aware of headgate dust control. Experimental evidence indicates that dust captured by reagent-treated sprays at the shearer can be reemitted in the headgate area if stagcloader-crusher sprays and other dust controls are inadequate.

The San Juan Coal Mine, located near Farmington, New Mexico, supplies the San Juan Generating Station with more than 6 million tons of coal annually. To replace dwindling surface mine production, San Juan installed a longwall in 2002. The roof rock in much of the underground reserve consists of interbedded coals, carbonaceous shales, and mudstones. Roof support consists of fully-grouted roof bolts, both tensioned and non-tensioned, supplemented by modified cable trusses. Short-encapsulation pull tests conducted by San Juan’s geotechnical engineering department showed that some of the immediate roof layers provided variable bolt anchorage. To ensure that the roof bolts were obtaining the necessary anchorage, additional tests were conducted in a variety of locations. The results have been used to determine the optimum support design for different areas of the mine. Another series of tests evaluated the performance of several bolt and hole diameter combinations. The experience at San Juan Mine shows that short-encapsulation pull tests can provide the information necessary to improve ground control in variable roof conditions. It also illustrates how a pro-active geotechnical engineering program can be an essential component of a state of the art underground coal mine.

This report covers the final phase of a project demonstrating the economic efficiency of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. A demonstration mine was established at Big Wheel Gap in northeastern Tennessee. Not only was cross-ridge mining feasible for the selected site, but parallel cut methods could not be used due to a deficit in available spoil storage. Cross-ridge mining permitted coal extraction at a cost almost identical with costs simulated by computer projections using mathematical optimization techniques. No unexpected environmental problems were encountered. Volume I is accompanied by Volume II which describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, software used to support the mining demonstration.

Much has been written and many discussions have been held concerning the prevention of accidents in coal mines , and considerable progress has been made in eliminating hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen . Although much progress has been made in the reduction of injury rates in the Pennsylvania anthracite field , the injury rates for the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are generally higher than the average for coal mines in the United States as a whole , because the mining conditions , including the safety problems , in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields are more complex than in other coal fields of the United States . Several factors contribute to this extremely difficult problem , among which are : Multiple - vein mining , steeply pitching measures , folds or faults , hard smooth floors underneath the veins , and the remining or reclaiming of pillars in severely crushed , broken ground . In the early days of the Pennsylvania anthracite industry , only the more productive veins were mined , and this resulted in bypassing those veins that were relatively thin and those containing considerable proportions of impurities . However , the development of modern coal - preparation equipment , improved marketing conditions , and the adoption of mechanical equipment , such as the various types of conveyors and scraper loaders , have made possible the recovery of the thinner and poorer veins . Furthermore , in the early days , little or no attempt was made to recover the coal pillars , usually owing to the great amount of virgin coal available . Consequently , much of the anthracite produced within the last few years has been recovered by second and third mining and frequently by fourth mining - in areas where operations had been suspended for many years . In such areas , the coal veins and intervening strata are usually crushed as the result of gradual subsidence , which intensifies the hazards incidental to roof control , haulage , ventilation , and mine gases . Moreover , the use of coal - cutting equipment is not practicable in most anthracite mines because of. the inclination of the veins and because , in crushed -ground areas , the faces must be advanced slowly and for short distances at a time to permit the erection of timber sets and the placing of forepoles to support the roof and sides . Thus , the slow process of mining brought about by these conditions has resulted in the production of only 0.424 ton of anthracite for each man- hour worked , as compared with 0.753 ton? for each man - hour worked at other coal mines in the United States . A summary contained in Bulletin 462,8/ a publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines , reveals that the rate of fatal injuries in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry was improved from 13.47 deaths per million tons produced in 1870 to 3.88 deaths per million tons mined in 1942. During the period March 16 , 1942 to January 1 , 1947 , the fatality rate was reduced from 3.88 to 2.87 deaths for each million tons mined . On the million man-hour basis , the rate of fatal injuries was reduced from 1.643 to 1.130 and the nonfatalinjury rate was lowered from 119.01 to 83.12 during the same period . The improvements made in both the fatal- and nonfatal - injury rates have required the cooperation of the workmen , the mining companies , and the State and Federal inspection departments . Many individual mines and companies have achieved commendable safety records which contributed greatly to the over - all average for the industry , particularly during the 1942-47 period . One of the most outstanding of these is the Continental mine of the Continental -Archbald Coal Co. , a member of the Moffat Co. Interests .

The recovery or partial recovery of the oil remaining in oil sands after the usual methods of production have become unprofitable is perhaps the greatest problem in the petroleum industry today. The amount of this oil remaining in the sand is variously estimated by those familiar with the subject to be 25 to 90 per cent of the original content.2 Lewis3 states, "The estimate of 80 to 90 per cent of the oil left underground does not seem incredible."

The Bureau of Mines has developed an automated reflectance scanning microscope system, primarily for determination of volume proportions, size distribution, and mode of association of the physical (petrographic) components of coals. The process, which is potentially more rapid and objective and less tedious than a visual microscopic procedure, involves magnetic tape recording of several millions of reflectance readings on micro-meter sized areas of polished coal surface and computer analysis and interpretation of some characteristics of the coal components. The system was tested in a study of pyrite distribution in steam coals. The application was essentially successful, but defects in polished pyrite surface characteristics and problems in adequate sampling prevented completely satisfactory results. Pyrite con-tent and coal-pyrite particle association could be determined nearly as well as by visual microscopy, but size distribution data were less acceptable.

The Bureau of Mines conducted radiation-ventilation studies in six large underground uranium mines to investigate the extent of radon-daughter exposure experienced by the miners and to analyze the ventilation systems to set what changes were required to achieve recommended radiation standards. The studies entailed tracing and measuring the mines' ventilating air, quantitatively and qualitaitively, from its entrance into the mines, through production areas, and lack to the surface. Pressures consumed in creating airflow through mine circuits were determined by altimeter surveys. Air quantities were measured with anemometers or by chemical smoke cloud methods. Air quantities delivered through tubing were determined using U-tube water gages to magnahelic gages to measure velocity pressures. Radon-daughters were filtered from mine air to measure alpha activity; activity levels were converted to "working levels," the established unit for reporting miner exposure. Attention was given to locating unnecessary contamination influx sources and recirculating air. The radiation-ventilation surveys showed that where basic principles of food ventilation were not followed, high alpha radiation levels invariably resulted. Some mines required more primary air for controlling radiation levels throughout active areas, but more efficient use of available air was generally possible. Premature contamination of intake air was prevalent where development Openings intersected ore or passed by worked-out stopes. Several auxiliary systems were inefficient in secondary distribution, recirculating air already too highly contaminated for ventilation. Many got these common problems can be traced try the lack of dine planning with radiation control in mind.

In anthracite mining , pumping is a problem of major importance , and water must be handled and rehandled in almost every mine whether the mine is in operation or idle . The motor - driven centrifugal pump is the most commonly used type of unit for the large pumping installations, and experience has . proved that fully automatic control has certain advantages over manual control . Some of these advantages are greater safety for maintenance personnel , continuous protection against faulty operation , which could cause damage to the Lumping apparatus , and lower pump -room operating costs .
