Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantities, a series of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of J. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for example, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New River (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a full account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. Passive methods of treating mine water use chemical and biological processes that decrease metal concentrations and neutralize acidity. Compared with conventional chemical treatment, passive methods generally require more land area, but use less costly reagents and require less operational attention and maintenance. Currently, three types of passive technologies exist: aerobic wetlands, organic substrate wetlands, and anoxic limestone drains. Aerobic wetlands promote mixed oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and are most effective when the raw mine water is net alkaline. Organic substrate wetlands promote anaerobic bacterial activity that results in the precipitation of metal sulfides and the generation of bicarbonate alkalinity. Anoxic limestone drains generate bicarbonate alkalinity and can be useful for the pretreatment of mine water before it flows into a wetland. Rates of metal and acidity removal for passive systems have been developed empirically by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Aerobic wetlands remove Fe and Mn from alkaline water at rates of 10-20 and 0.5- 1.0 g. m-2? d-1, respectively. Wetlands with a composted organic substrate remove acidity from mine water at rates of 3-9 g. m-2? d-1?. A model for the design and sizing of passive treatment systems is presented in this report.

This report is the first in a "final" series of publications on the Juneau Mining District (JMD). This volume summarizes the results of Bureau of Mines (Bureau) investigations in the JMD during the period 1984-1988. Volume 2 consists of a detailed description of Bureau investigations of mineral de-posits, prospects, and occurrences. Volume 3 is a report on industrial minerals within the district. This study has identified and examined more than 300 mines, prospects, and occurrences containing gold, silver, copper, zinc, lead, nickel, cobalt, tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, and PGM. More than 20 of these were discovered during this study. An additional 20 prospects not mentioned in the literature were rediscovered during the JMD study.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a state-of-the-art study of techniques currently employed to close large openings in underground mines. A large opening was considered to be any opening over 10 feet high and having a cross section of at least 200 square feet. Five salt mines and one limestone mine were visited to observe various methods of sealing large openings. Because of the variations in conditions from mine to mine, no definite conclusions could be drawn as to which is the best method. In mines where waste material is available, stoppings built by piling waste material are efficient and economical. Where waste material is not available properly constructed brattice cloth stoppings are superior to those built from wood, concrete block, or urethane foams.

Experiments in reclaiming acidic surface-mined coal lands with raw fly ash from bituminous-coal-fired powerplants were conducted by the Bureau of Mines at two sites in northern West Virginia. Plots at both sites were treated with varying tonnages of fly ash from three area powerplants and were planted with a variety of grasses, legumes, trees, and shrubs. Eight grasses and seven legumes were investigated. Greatest promise for growth under harsh soil conditions was shown by Kentucky 31 fescue, rye and red top grasses, and birdsfoot trefoil, a legume. Survival of trees and shrubs was negligible. Addition of fly ash to the spoil increased the pH to a range tolerable to some types of plant growth, improved the texture of the soil, and increased the available water of the resulting mixture.

The Federal Bureau of Mines refined chromium from an aqueous electrolytic process in molten sodium chloride-chromium chloride electrolytes. Oxygen and nitrogen contents were reduced by a factor of 10 to 40, but most other impurities were little changed. The product usually contained a little more iron than the feed. Since iron was entering the bath from the iron pot and the graphite liner at a nearly constant rate, contamination of the chromium deposits by it was more serious at low currents and deposition rates. A few runs in an iron cell with a nickel liner yielded chromium containing one half as much iron as the feed, but up to 1.5 pct. nickel. In all cases the anode feed lay in the bottom of the container, which itself was used as the anode connection. With a 12-in. cell, variations in applied voltage from 0.05 to 1.5, in current from less than 10 to over 100 a., and in initial cathode current densities from less than 100 to over 2,000 a./sq.ft. had little or no effect upon the analysis of the metal produced) except for iron content. Changes in bath analysis from 3 to 11 pct. chromium were also without effect. These changes did bring about large differences in the physical forms of the crystals obtained. The thick heavy crystals produced at low voltage and current contained voids which made them difficult to leach free of chlorides. Easiest to leach were the thin leaf-like crystals obtained at around 1 v.

A study of the composition of the corresponding fractions of a primary and a high- temperature tar was undertaken to throw light on the net results of the pyrolysis of the primary products of coal decomposition in high-temperature coking practice, with reference both to total quantities of the chemically similar constituents and to their distribution throughout the boiling range. No exactly parallel investigations are on record. The distribution of substances in high-temperature tars, however, is fairly well understood. Such tars are more or less similar, for they consist of the more stable phenols, aromatic and olefinic compounds resulting from the pyrolytic decomposition of a wide variety of primary tar constituents. For example, from a typical distillation curve for high-temperature tar phenols4 it may be seen that the greatest portion of the phenols distills between 180° and 220° C., a fairly narrow range.

"During the past several years, alunite from the Marysvale (Utah) region has been the subject of investigation by the Electrometallurgical Section of the Bureau of Mines. The nature and occurrence of this mineral, with considerable data on the Utah deposits, together with a number of results of preliminary experiments, have been given in a previous report. 6/ The geology of the Marysvale region has been reviewed recently. 7/The present paper reports the results obtained by a method involving the sintering of alunite with boric acid and subsequent treatment of the sinter to produce alumina and potassium sulphate.The preliminary work just mentioned had given indications of the separation of sulphate salts high in potassium from fusions of alunite with borax glass.During the course of further work along those lines, fusions of boric acid and alunite were tried. No separation of salts was obtained, but it was observed that rather complete removal of so3 from the alunite occurred and that the sinter could be leached with water to give a solution contain¬ing most of the potash and a residue containing most of the alumina. A large metallurgical experiment station at Salt Lake City to house the works of the Bureau of Mines in the intermountain area properly has long been projected. It finally became possible when a Public Works Allotment of $300,000 was set aside for building and equipment. With the new building assured, the Bureau of Mines decided to move the headquarters of its Metallurgical Division from Washington, D. C., to Salt Lake City, Utah. It was felt that this move would simplify they administrative work of the chief engineer of the division, as all stations devoted primarily to metallurgical work are west of the Mississippi. These include Rolla, Mo.; Minneapolis, Minn.; Pullman, Wash.; Reno, Nev.; Berkeley, Calif.; Boulder City, Nev.; and Tucson, Ariz. In addition to these stations will groups, of investigators working on metallurgical problem, are maintained at Pittsburgh, Pa., and College Park, Md. Salt Like City was clearly a more central point for the direction of this scattered work than Washington, D. C. The building (fig. 1, A and B) was designed from general plans worked out by the authors of this paper. Contraction was begun in March of 1939, and by the end of the year the Metallurgical Division had moved, into its now quarters.

NIOSH researchers conducted a study to compare seat designs on underground coal mine haulage vehicles. The objective of the study was to support prior findings that NIOSH-designed seats, which incorporated ergonomic design features (e.g., viscoelastic foam padding and low-back support), are improved designs. Based on measured levels of vehicle jarring/jolting and perceived discomfort, researchers evaluated four different designs - two in-use and two NIOSH-developed, ergonomic designs. Researchers collected data using a short questionnaire, a linear, visual analog scale, and accelerometers with a data recorder. Results showed that vehicle operators favored the NIOSH seats with added adjustability, low-back support, and improved seat padding over the existing seats. In addition, the measurements indicated all NIOSH seats performed better than the existing seat, under the no-load (worse of two) conditions, in reducing peak acceleration, crest factor, and RMS acceleration. The authors summarize the data collected and operator preferences for seat designs and different foam padding arrangements.

Colorado coal-mine fatalities, which have gradually decreased since 1914, have shown a marked decline since 1924. Data on coal-mine fatalities in Colorado published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines5 indicate that the deaths per thousand 300-day workers have decreased from 9.13 in 114 to 6.14 in 1926, and that the deaths per million tons produced have decreased from 9.18 in 1914 to 4.98 in 1926. Table 1 gives fatality rates in Colorado and in the United States from 1914 to 1926 inclusive. [ ]

Combining contract and in-house research, the Bureau of Mines has developed and inmine-tested a novel device to improve the field-of-view of operators of off-highway mining equipment. This device utilizes a downward-looking, flat fresnel lens. The lens, plus louvers to reduce glare, is housed in a protective steel structure. The complete unit is called a blind area viewer. The viewer, when mounted on the right- front corner of the deck of most large haulage trucks, will increase a driver's direct field-of-view from about 35 pct (of where he/she has to drive) to about 80 pct. The improved visibility allows the driver to see possible collision hazards and roadway obstacles better, thus improving mine safety and increasing productivity. Economic analysis shows that the blind area viewers, which are now commercially available, pay for themselves in about a month on a 170-ton-capacity truck. The viewers are also applicable to other large mining equipment, such as front-end loaders, draglines, and downhole drills, or any place where seeing around a corner would be advantageous, such as along conveyor flights in processing plants during startups.

This paper describing the mining practice and methods at the United Verde Extension mine, Jerome, Ariz., is one of a series of papers in preparation by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods used in various mining districts of the United States. The United Verde Extension mine is a massive, high-grade deposit of copper sulphide containing some gold and silver and is mined almost exclusively by the conventional square-set method with some local modifications. About 450 men are employed underground and 1200 tons of direct smelting ore is produced per day. Figure 1 is a surface map of the Jerome district.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine the feasibility of joining refractory metal compounds to each other and to oxide ceramics by a vacuum hot press-diffusion bonding method. Very satisfactory joins were made of ZrC to ZrB2, ZrN to ZrB2, ZrC to ZrN, and of ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 to Al203. Each of these join assemblies contained a mixture layer comprising 50 weight-percent each of the two end compounds. The mixture layer, sandwiched between each end compound, enhanced bonding and smoothed out the thermal expansion gradient between the two end members. Strength and thermal shock tests showed that the join areas of the ZrC, ZrN, and ZrB2 joins were stronger and more shock resistant than the parent materials. Also included in the joining tests was one each of TiC to TiB2, TiC to TiN, TiB2 to TIN, and TiC to ZrB2 joins. Each of these was well bonded, showing that the vacuum-hot-press method can be used for a variety of systems.

The Nation's mining and quarrying industries have again met the annual challenge to their ingenuity--that of reducing disabling work injuries among their employees. The effectiveness of management in facing this problem and in meeting this responsibility is evident from the results of the 1961 National Safety Competition. Three hundred ninety-three or 45.3 percent of the mines and quarries participating in the competition established a new record number of participants operating throughout the competition year without a disabling work injury. Another record established in the 1961 contest was the number of participants (868) enrolled in the competition. This annual safety competition was begun in 1925 and is conducted by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. It provides for six bronze Sentinels of safety trophies which are awarded each year to the winning participant in each group. Since its inception, the competition has exerted a strong influence in the field of safety promotion. The statistical record of its accomplishments over the years gives strong support to the theory that well-organized and well- administered safety programs are effective tools to be used to reduce the number of disabling work injuries. It stimulates and holds the interest of employees and management in accident prevention. Because of this, mines and quarries participating in the contest have a more favorable safety record than those operations not enrolled.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to improve design methods for mining volcano-genic massive-sulfide (VMS) type deposits in environmentally sensitive regions. This study was conducted at the Greens Creek Mine, which is typical of many VMS-type deposits throughout southeast Alaska, and served as a case history for computer modeling and structural analysis. Results indicated that the finite-element design method provided reasonable comparisons with both the anticipated regional stress regime and the measured deformational response of the underground accessways. Investigators concluded that reasonable accuracy can be expected for stability analyses of proposed mine design scenarios at this mine using the results of this preliminary study.

The work on synthetic mica and related subjects is being reported in a series of technical articles (see Supplementary Bibliography), each of which describes some special aspect of the subject. This is the final report on chemical analysis of the fluoride-containing silicates. A condensation of this report has been published (26).3/ Chemical analysis affords one of the best means of ascertaining the final com-position of either a heterogeneous mass or a single pure crystal, particularly where some constituents may be volatile. The analysis of fluoride-containing silicates was not so well known or understood that highly accurate results were commonplace. For example, on synthetic mica a university laboratory reported 11.6 and 9.2 percent fluoride when at least 13.3 and 11.3 percent were present, respectively; a commercial testing laboratory reported 9.14 percent as compared to 12.6 percent; and a glass company reported 7.0 percent as compared to 9.0 percent present. No intimation is made that these analysts could not have done better, but the point to be stressed is that the methods in use were long, tedious, and generally required a certain familiarity for best results.

Recent dry-top electric smelting tests at the Northwest Electrodevelopment Experiment Station, Albany, Oreg., indicate that a high-titanium slag and a good grade of pig iron can be produced from alluvial Idaho ilmenite. A total of 120 tons of concentrates were smelted during this investigation, to yield an average of 0.5 ton of slag and 0.3 ton of pig iron per ton of ilmenite. Power consumption averaged 1,400 kv.-hr. per ton of ilmenite, at a feed rate of 400 to 500 pounds per hour, when operating at an electrical energy input of 290 to 370 kilowatts. The optimum operating voltage appeared to be 110 volts, phase-to-phase. Graphite electrode consumption averaged 15.6 pounds per ton of ilmenite smelted. Magnesite furnace refractory withstood the corrosive action of the hot metal and slag better than carbon refractory.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the relationship between cur-rent load and temperature rises in coal mine trailing cables. Six low-voltage, unshielded, portable power cables were continuously and intermittently loaded with direct current of various magnitudes. Temperature rises within and on the cables were measured with thermocouples, and the data were recorded with a computer. Thermal time constants were calculated, which fixed the periods of the duty-cycle tests. Relationships between average temperature at the conductor-insulation interface and current load were established. The steady-state and intermittent currents that produce a 90° C average conductor-insulation temperature were then determined. Comparisons with Insulated Cable Engineers Association (ICE A) steady-state ratings revealed that 10 to 25 pct more current than recommended ICEA ampacities is required to reach rated insulation temperature. Examination of the maximum intermittent temperatures attained showed that autoignition of coal dust and burn injuries to personnel handling the cable would not be concerns if the temperature at the conductor-insulation interface averaged 90° C.
