Under a general program to extend the resources of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines examined the Quien Sabe antimony mine in October 1948. The preliminary evaluation demonstrated that a diamond-drill program was warranted co establish the tenor and persistence of the veins and permit an estimation of antimony reserves. The Bureau of Mines conducted a diamond-drilling program on the property from December 1949 to May 1950. Ten holes aggregating 2,483 feet were drilled. Nine of the holes encountered antimony-bearing vein material.

Native asphalt was produced by three companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by one firm, R. L. White Co., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon found only in Colorado and Utah, was mined by two firms, American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), and Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) closed its mining operation during the year.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).

The Bureau of Mines is developing nickel catalysts for converting synthesis gas derived from coal to synthetic natural gas. The present report describes the relationship between the composition of aluminum-nickel alloys in the composition range NiAl3 to Ni2Al3 equilibrated at 840° C and the properties of catalysts obtained from them. Methanation activity was determined in the temperature range of 300° to 360° C in a flowing gas stream containing 1 pct CO, 8 pct H2, and the remainder He. One part per million of H2S was added to the gas stream at 400° C to evaluate the susceptibility of catalysts to sulfur poisoning. The total surface area was measured by the adsorption of nitrogen at liquid nitrogen temperature, and the active surface area was measured by the adsorption of hydrogen at room temperature. Total surface area and active surface area were found to increase with increasing proportion of aluminum-saturated Ni2Al3 in the precursor alloy, but methanation activity and resistance to poisoning by H2S were nearly constant. However, the methanation activity of the catalyst prepared from stoichiometric Ni2Al3 was less than half that of the other catalysts.

The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

This Bureau of Mines report is a background study of the International Tin Agreement. Attempts at stabilizing the tin market prior to the agreement are detailed, as well as the conditions and negotiations that set up the agreement. Details of the five consecutive 5-year agreements beginning in 1956 are presented, with emphasis on membership and the agreements' primary tools: the buffer stock and export controls, Attention is focused throughout on the United States activities during the period, especially with regard to its strategic stockpile, and its involvement with the agreement culminating in its membership, for the first time, in the fifth agreement beginning in 1976. Considerations leading to the U.S. decision to join are detailed, and U.S. activities in the negotiations for the sixth agreement are presented. The status and outlook for the agreement are discussed, and evaluations of the effectiveness of the agreement and its components are reviewed.

One phase of Bureau of Mines work in health and safety, is promotion of the use of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respiratory protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of minimum requirements for self-contained breathing apparatus,3/ gas masks, supplied-air respirators (hose masks, air-line respirators, and abrasive blasting helmets, hoods, or masks),2 dispersoid (dust, fume, and mist) respirators, and nonemergency gas respirators (chemical cartridge respirators). Approval tests of self-contained breathing apparatus are conducted by the Safety Branch, approval tests of other types of respira- tory protective equipment are conducted by the Health Branch, These branches are in the Health and Safety Division.

This Bureau of Mines laboratory research demonstrated that building bricks meeting ASTM specification C62-66 for grades SW and MW of FBS-type bricks can be produced from waste copper mill tailings. Waste tailings from accumulations at Magna, Utah, Anaconda, Mont., and Hayden, Miami, and San Manuel, Ariz., were dry-pressed into bricks, and the products were tested in accordance with ASTM Designation C67-66 on sampling, and testing of brick. An evaluation derived from pilot-plant production of similar brick at the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University indicated the production cost to be about $34 per 1,000 bricks. Utilization of such mill tailings on a commercial scale would eliminate the need for digging new pits for brick raw material production, conserve natural resources, and simultaneously remove potential sources of air pollution.

Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the Major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these-actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed sub¬jects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting dis¬ease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the ex¬pression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

A shortage of anthracite for home heating indicates the necessity of using other fuels for this purpose; low-volatile bituminous, or "soft" coal is the most feasible supplementary fuel, either burned alone or when mixed with anthracite. Comparison of Bituminous Coal and Anthracite Whereas anthracite is clean, burns without smoke, and requires little attention, bituminous coal is dusty, tends to burn with a smoky flame, and forms coke in the fire pot that must be broken up to maintain a continuous high output of heat. When properly fired, however, bituminous coal responds more quickly than anthracite to changes in damper settings and consequently can supply more heat in a short time. It is generally less expensive and usually contains less ash than anthracite.

Research was conducted to develop methods on a laboratory scale for recovering manganese from manganiferous slimes and limestones . The procedure is a low- temperature modification of the carbamate process , in which manganese is dissolved and the valence reduced by treating slimes and limestones with controlled amounts of sulfurous acid . Manganese ( II) hydroxide is precipitated and leached with ammonium carbamate solution , and manganese carbonate is separated by warming the leach solution . A major portion of the reagents is regenerated and recirculated . About 75 percent of the total manganese in manganiferous slimes , and from 50 to 75 percent of the total manganese in manganiferous limestones , are recovered as manganese carbonate containing 45 percent manganese .

Tantalum and columbium can be extracted from several of their ores or concentrates by chlorination procedures. Direct chlorination of high-grade minerals in the presence of carbon at temperatures between 500° and 800° C will extract up to 99 percent of the tantalum and columbium. Metallurgical beneficiation of low-grade source materials by carbothermic reduction produces a ferroalloy that is amenable to chlorination at a temperature of 500° C. Over 90 percent of the tantalum and columbium can be recovered.

It is estimated that well over 20 million lb of chromium and 8 million lb of nickel, plus other metal values, are diverted annually to furnace dusts, mill scale, and contaminated swarfs in the domestic stainless and other specialty steelmaking industry. Little inroad has been made toward the in-plant recycling of these wastes to reclaim the metal values. The Bureau of Mines has devised a process for recovering about 90 pct of the chromium and molybdenum and well over 90 pct of the nickel and iron from stainless steelmaking furnace dusts, swarf, and mill scale. Other metals such as manganese are also recovered. Initial laboratory results were confirmed and expanded to include a wide variation of stainless steelmaking waste mixtures. Later experiments have included specialty steelmaking wastes other than from stainless steelmaking. Significantly, the ease of technology transfer has been demonstrated by a number of industrial-sized (19-ton) commercial electric furnace heats, in which the pelletized wastes represented some 10 to 20 pct of the furnace charge, replacing part of the normal scrap charge. Results of these successful large-scale trials are presented. Some information is also presented on incorporation into the pellets of chromium-bearing particulate wastes originating from other than steelmaking production. Cost evaluation indicates the process is economically attractive.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to assess the impact of a directional water spray system on a unique single inlet dust scrubber on a low-profile mining machine. Tests were conducted in a full-scale model mine using a continuous mining machine. Tracer gas was introduced at the face and concentrations of the tracer gas were monitored at the face and in the return. Various parameters tested included mining position, depth of cut, brattice setback, and combinations of scrubber, and directional or symmetrical sprays. Results indicated that either water spray configuration improved the ventilation effectiveness of the scrubber by a factor of 2 to 3. Average face ventilation effectiveness (FVE) values for all testing of the scrubber and directional sprays were 0.95, versus 0.37 for a standard 20-ft blowing curtain without sprays. No FVE values were less than the standard 20-ft blowing results.

The Bureau of Mines study indicates that land utilized by the mining industry for mineral extraction and processing from 1930 through 1980 amounted to 5.7 million acres, or 0.25 percent of the land mass in the United States. Land reclaimed by the industry during the same period was 2.7 million acres, or 47 percent of the land utilized. Land use by the mining industry includes surface land used for excavation or mining, for waste from underground mining, and for wastes from milling or processing operations. Data on land use for disposal of overburden waste from surface coal mines and on areas affected by subsidence associated with underground mining are included for the period 1930-71 only. The 10 leading States in total land used for mining over the 51-year period were, in decreasing order, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, West Virginia, Florida, Indiana, California, Alabama, and Missouri. Seven mineral commodities accounting for 92 percent of land use are, in decreasing order, bituminous coal, sand and gravel, stone, phosphate rock, clay, copper, and iron ore, all predominately surface mined. Bituminous coal production was responsible for nearly half of the total area utilized. Reclamation of mined lands and waste disposal sites over the reporting period was largely on lands utilized in mining bituminous coal; 75 percent of the land used for bituminous coal production was reclaimed.

The effects of adding varying amounts of type I portland cement to hydraulic backfill are described. Six different fill materials, each with three cement contents, were tested to determine which fill properties have the most significant effect on cemented strength. Two strength prediction equations, based on the physical and mineralogical properties of the fills, were formulated, and these accounted for 96 and 99 percent of the variability of the data. Results of both unconfined compression and triaxial tests of cemented fills are given, and the effects of moist curing and fill densification on the 7-day strength are discussed. Permeability test data are given, and the decreased permeability due to cement content and curing time is shown graphically. A discussion of the limited evaluation of other potential stabilization additives (expansive cement, fly ash, sodium silicate, gypsum, and asphalt) is included in an appendix.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a regulated, intrinsically safe, rechargeable power supply for portable electronic equipment for underground use. The regulated output is ideal for microprocessor power requirements and is suited for operation in hazardous environments. Two rechargeable, sealed batteries are contained within the power supply. Provisions are made to use an external source of power if these batteries fail. Provisions are also made to charge these internal batteries when needed. The circuit is composed of three main circuits: the main regulator circuit, the input protection circuit, and the output protection circuit. The main regulator circuit provides remote voltage sensing, current sensing, fault monitoring, and internal thermal protection. The input protection circuit checks for excessive input current and low battery conditions. The output protection circuit contains two overvoltage detection devices. Schematics, a parts list, and a calibration procedure are provided in this report to enable readers to fabricate the power supply.
