The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.

Various aspects of judgment and decision-making are key themes in this book. The model presented here serves as a loose structure for the chapters that follow this one. The notion of a model is introduced because growing research interest in the subjective aspects of group and individual behavior has led to a debate over whether judgment is a skill that can be understood scientifically. A related point of contention is whether such an understanding could lead to the development of methods for estimating people's ability to make good decisions during an emergency. There is some literature that supports the potential usefulness of this approach. However, little agreement seems to have been reached on how to define and operationalize even those basic concepts necessary to assess the soundness of decisions from within their environmental and group contexts [Jensen and Benel 1977; Godden and Baddeley 1979; Baumann and Bourbonnais 1982; Brecke 1982; Stone et al. 1985]. A look at the real-world process is clearly needed. The need to attempt a better understanding of judgment and decision-making properties stems from those occasions in the existence of an organization when there is a lot at stake. The process of decision-making (which is part of the exercise of judgment) has been analyzed in situations such as corporate takeovers [Janis and Mann1977], military combat [Begland1979], clinical emergencies [Baumann and Bourbonnais 1982], and aviation events [Billings and Reynard1984]. The fundamental assumption of these analyses is that, while there are untold successes, there are also notable numbers of failures resulting from decisions that can be ascribed to one or more errors in judgment. From a cognitive perspective, any person engaged in decision-making (either alone or in a group) is actively involved in a process characterized by certain elements. These were mentioned in chapter 1, but are reiterated briefly at this point: (1) detection of a problem, (2) definition or diagnosis, (3) consideration of available options, (4) choice of what is perceived as the best option given recognized needs, and (5) execution of the choice based on what has transpired [Flathers et al. 1982; Baumann and Bourbonnais 1982]. At any moment in this process, there are factors at play that have a large impact on one's ability to solve complex problems in a limited time: (1) an internal state [Hedge and Lawson 1979] is the sum of a person's psychomotor skills, knowledge, attitudes, etc.; (2) uncertainty [Brecke 1982] is caused by faulty or incomplete information received from the external environment; (3) stress [Biggs 1968; Jensen and Benel 1977] is generated both by the problem at hand and any background problem that may exist; and (4) complexity, as it is used here, refers to the number of elements involved that must be attended to. These variables are depicted in figure 5.1, and their relationship to each other and to an outcome is indicated. This schema is designed to suggest interaction, because while the judgment and decision-making process may be conceptualized as discrete stages, experience tells us that this is not the way people function in real-world situations.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

The absorbed power (PAbs) has been suggested as a better measure of human responses to whole-body vibration, since it relates to the cumulative energy dissipated by the body exposed over a given duration. Moreover, unlike the other measures, the PAbs can adequately account for the intensity of exposure. Although, the vast majority of off-road vehicles impose considerably severe vibration along the horizontal axes, the vast majority of studies on biodynamic response characterization consider only vertical vibration. Only a few studies have reported PAbs responses of the seated human body exposed to horizontal vibration and the major contributing factors [1]. This study aims to characterize the PAbs responses of seated human subjects to horizontal (uncoupled x- and y-axis) vibration as functions of the vibration intensity, subject mass, seat height and the, type of back support. Methods Experiments were conducted using a rigid seat with an adjustable backrest inclination and seat height. The seat was installed on a horizontal vibration simulator and the forces at the seat base and the backrest were measured by three-axis force plates. Two single-axis accelerometers were installed on the seat back and the platform, oriented along the axis of motion. The experiments were performed using three different seat heights (350, 390 and 410 mm), back support conditions (NB- no back support and sitting erect; Wb0- Upper body supported against a vertical back support; and WbA- back supported against an inclined backrest, while sitting relaxed) and three different magnitudes of broad band excitations in the 0.5-10 Hz frequency range (0.25, 0.5 and 1 m/s2 rms acceleration under x-axis and y-axis, applied independently). A total of 8 healthy adult male volunteers with total body mass ranging from 59.4 kg to 92 kg and aged between 21-51 years took part in the experiments. The subjects were seated with their hands in lap, and feet supported on the moving platform for each posture. Each measurement was repeated 2 times, while the data were analysed using a bandwidth of 50 Hz and frequency resolution of 0.0625 Hz. Round Mountain Gold (RMG) in central Nevada, reports that over a nine-year period and a million operating hours, its fleet of 150-ton and 190-ton haul trucks has averaged better than 93% availability, with some of the trucks approaching 70,000 operating hours. Repair costs have been far below industry averages. Mine operations manager Pete Kesl credits the high availability and low repair costs to a succession of Product Support Agreements between RMG and Caterpillar dealer Cashman Equipment. He adds that good equipment and a high level of trust and co­operation between all parties to these agreements have been essential to their success at Round Mountain.

The concept of limit burning velocities is being used to formulate a quantitative theory of flammability limits. Competing and complicating processes dissipate power from a combustion wave and quench propagation at some characteristically low limit velocity. Two earlier reports dealt with process (a), natural convection (RI 8127); and with process (b), conductive-convective wall losses (RI 8469). This report considers process (c), radiative losses, and process (d), selective diffusional demixing. The limit burning velocity for radiative losses is [(SU)c ~ e cp] It is normally not a significant process for premixed gas flames; however, for laminar flame propagation in a gravity-free environment, it is the only loss process present. Accordingly, limit velocities at zero gravity should be much lower than on earth, and premixed gases should be flammable over wider composition ranges. For highly emissive dusts, soot, or ash-forming flames, radiative losses are significant even under normal gravity conditions. Selective diffusional demixing is a complication that manifests itself in the form of cellular flame structures and wide gaps in composition between upward and downward propagation limits. It induces a burning velocity shift (?Su)d, causing the flame to behave as though it were richer or leaner than its initial composition, depending on whether the fuel or the oxidizer mole¬cule has the higher diffusivity. A simple pertubation analysis shows that the process generates stable cellular flames whenever [dsu] > 0, where ci is the concentration of the reactant with the higher diffusivity. The same analysis indicates that at the opposite stoichiometry, where [dcu] < 0, laminar structures are stabilized. A simple formula for the diameter of cellular flames is derived, which predicts that dcell should vary inversely with the product of the diffusivity difference Di -DJ, and the burning velocity slope [dc ]. Those predictions are in good agreement with the available data. Buoyancy forces for upward propagation induce flame front curvature, and hence buoyancy and selective diffusion are mutually supportive in upward propagation. Thus large gaps in composition between upward and downward limits are present in those composition domains where cellular flames are stable.

Computation of the thermodynamic properties of the reaction products in the deflagration of explosive gas mixtures has been a most valuable guide regarding the possible kinetic mechanisms of homogeneous combustion processes. Knowledge of the physically possible end states is indispensable for understanding observed deviations from equilibrium in heterogeneous combustion. However such information on dust flames is entirely lacking. To complement a Federal Bureau of Mines study of stationary graphite dust flames burning in pure oxygen,6/ this report gives examples, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature, of composition profiles in an idealized oxygen-dust flame, with both mass and enthalpy being preserved. Similar profiles can be obtained from the data of the paper for elevated temperature and pressure.

Motion capture involves recording the position and global orientation of joint sensors of a real object, in most cases a real person performing some human activities. This information is usually recorded at uniformly spaced instances of time, or as it is often called frame-by-frame. Then the recorded motion data sets are processed and mapped into a skeleton hierarchy of a virtual, computer simulated human figure to control the motion of the virtual human in the computer simulation. In the first part of the paper we review several new techniques developed to facilitate the manipulation, noise reduction, storage and reuse of captured data, which have a potential to reduce the overall cost of motion simulation and improve its realism. In the second part of the paper we consider the real life problem of reducing a worker?s risk from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. We formulate a set of requirements to motion editing for this particular task and analyze the limitation of existing techniques

Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) affects industrial workers exposed to long term hand-transmitted vibration from powered-tools. Peripheral neuropathy is a major component of the symptom complex of HAVS. Long term exposure to vibration causes myelin damage in peripheral nerves and reduces nerve conduction velocities in rats1. This study addresses the effects of acute vibration at constant acceleration of 49 m/s2 on myelinated fibers in peripheral nerves in Sprague-Dawley male rats using the ‘rat-tail vibration model,’ which simulates hand-transmitted vibration2. Methods Male Sprague-Dawley rats (~300 g) were assigned to vibration groups: 1 hr continuous vibration at 60 Hz; 4 hr continuous exposure at frequencies of 30, 60, 120 or 800 Hz; immediate and 24 hr following a 4-hr cumulative exposure of continuous and intermittent vibration at 60 Hz. Unanesthetized rats were restrained in cages on a nonvibrating platform with their tails placed on a vibrating stage accelerated by a B&K motor type 4809 and vibrated. Intermittent vibration was delivered in bouts of 10 min vibration alternating with 5 min rest periods repeated over 6 hr. Sham controls were restrained without vibration. After vibration exposure, the rats were anaesthetized, and the ventral nerve trunks from the proximal tail segment 7 were fixed in glutaraldehyde, embedded in epon-araldite and sectioned at 0.5 µm thickness and stained with toludine-blue for morphological quantitative analysis. The total number of myelinated axons in each cross-section of the nerve was counted using the Image J software. Myelin damage was identified by focal increase in area and intensity of toludine-blue staining and unraveling of the myelin sheath. Statistical analysis for comparing sham and the different vibration groups was done using Dunnett’s test. Animal treatment and all surgical procedures were approved by the institutional review board and compiled with the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act. Results The rats tolerated continuous vibration very well and exhibited no behavioral signs of stress. When exposed to intermittent vibration, there was increased vocalization, a startle reflex at the beginning of each bout of vibration, deposition of porphyrin around the eyes and transient hypersensitivity to touch.

Background. There is currently little information regarding factors associated with specific modes of motion segment failure using a fatigue failure model. Methods. Thirty-six human lumbar motion segments were fatigue tested using spinal compressive and shear loads that simulated lifting a 9 kg weight in three torso flexion angles (0°, 22.5°, and 45°). Twenty-five segments failed via fatigue prior to the 10,000 cycle maximum. These specimens were visually inspected and dissected so that the mode(s) of failure could be determined. Failure modes included endplate fractures (classified into nine varieties), vertebral body fractures, and/or zygapophysial joint disruption. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine whether certain morphometric variables, amount of motion segment flexion, disk degeneration scores, and/or loading characteristics were associated with the occurrence of specific failure modes. Findings. Results indicated that stellate endplate fractures were associated with increased posterior shear forces (P < 0.05) and less degenerated discs (P < 0.01). Fractures running laterally across the endplate were associated with motion segments having larger volumes (P < 0.01). Endplate depression was more common in smaller specimens (P < 0.01), as well as those experiencing increased posterior shear force (P < 0.05). Zygapophysial joint damage was more likely to occur in a neutral posture (P < 0.01). Interpretation. These results suggest that prediction of failure modes (e.g., specific endplate fracture patterns) may be possible (at least for older specimens) given knowledge of the spinal loads along with certain characteristics of the lumbar spine. Ohio has an estimated 46 billion tons of coal beneath 12,000 square miles of the eastern third of the state. Recoverable coal reserves within this vast area are estimated at 21 billion tons, 3.2 billion tons of which have been mined since 1800. Ohio is the eleventh-largest coal- producing state in the nation and ranks third nationally in coal consumption. Coal resources in Ohio lie in as many as 60 identifiable coal seams along the northwestern flank of the Appalachian coal basin. Except where interrupted by minor faults and erosional discontinuities, these rocks dip gently and uniformly to the east, simplifying the mining methods needed to extract the coal. Fourteen of Ohio&apos;s 60 coal seams are considered to be important, although only a small number of seams are currently being mined. Ohio first enacted a surface coal mining law in 1948, requiring in part a $100 per acre reclamation bond. Ohio progressively strengthened its surface mining law in 1949, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1965,1972,1975,1978, and 1981. At the time of its enactment, Ohio&apos;s 1972 mining law was one of the most stringent in the country. This law also created a state coal severance tax of four cents per ton to be used for abandoned mine land reclamation. Ohio received primacy to regulate the surface coal mining operations within the state August 16,1982. Its Abandoned Mine Land Program was approved on the same date.

The Production Profile Program is written for use on a Digital Model PDP 11/70 computer using a Fortran IV level G language. It may be run on any system which uses G level or an upward compatible version of Fortran IV language. Please note, however, that the Model PDP 11/70 for which the program was written is programed to read DEC026 type keypunching. If the user&apos;s computer is programed for another type of keypunching it may be necessary to re-keypunch the Production Profile Program. The Production Profile Program uses a fourteen card input. The data must be keypunched according to the layout described in detail in the multiple card layout forms (following). The output from this program must be printed on wide paper, as a full 120 columns are used. The samples of output at the back of this appendix have been reduced for inclusion in this report.

To pinpoint dust sources and to improve dust control on longwalls. Approach Use short-term gravimetric sampling to determine the severity of various dust sources, and to evaluate dust control techniques used in longwall mining. Short-term gravimetric sampling can be used to isolate dust levels produced by various dust sources. How It Works Traditionally, gravimetric samples have been collected over an 8-hour shift, yielding time-weighted, average dust concentrations. This method gives a good indication of the full-shift respirable dust exposure of underground workers, but is less than satisfactory for identifying dust sources, determining their severity, or for evaluating the effectiveness of dust control techniques. Short-term gravimetric sampling uses equipment available to all mine operators. Two individuals composing the survey team each collect multiple (three to four) gravimetric samples during selected segments of the mining cycle. Multiple samples are necessary to insure accuracy, and to obtain a valid average measurement of the respirable dust concentration when sampling for short periods of time (typically 20 to 30 minutes). The gravimetric instruments may be carried in a sampling package or in a "sampling vest." A fishing vest with four large pockets can be used for this purpose. The sampling pumps are carried in pockets and the sampling head assemblies arc hung across the front of the vest.

Rock-dusting is an. effective means of preventing coal-dust from propagating an explosion in a coal mine, but it will not prevent gas from igniting-explosively and with much attendant damage locally. Ventilation must therefore be effective at all times, regardless of the employment of other explosion-prevention methods, if gas explosions are to be avoided. This paper describes a gas explosion which occurred in as bituminous mine that was well rock-dusted at the point of ignition and which exemplifies the value of rock-dusting, the necessity of maintaining effective ventilation, and the need of permissible rock-dusting machines receiving power from a permissible locomotive. Description of Explosion The mine in which this explosion occurred is developed on a panel system in a practically level seam; the panel entries are driven in pairs, and the air current intakes on the right entry and returns on the left entry. Near the mouth of the intake a door is placed to control the ventilation; board stoppings are placed in crosscuts, except the second from the face, in which a brattice cloth curtain is hung, the last crosscut is left open and line brattices conduct the air current from the last crosscut to the faces. In No. 7 entry the last cross-cut was 152 feet from the face, the line brattice being within 38 feet of this face, and the second crosscut was 250 feet outby the face of the back entry or return. Seven days prior to the explosion the intake and return entries were rock-dusted to within 38 feet of the face, and as the entry had advanced during the week, the rock-dusting was to be extended.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Monongalia County, W. Va. It is one of a Bureau of Mines series planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. Over 9.5 million tons of coal was produced in Monongalia County in 1957, of which more than 7 million tons was cleaned mechanically in 8 cleaning plants. On January I, 1954 the Bureau of Mines estimated that 1,576 million tons of recoverable coal remained in the county in beds 28 inches or more thick.

Those of the oil-shale operators in this country who are sincerely attempting to make a real industry out of oil-shale developments, are anxious to obtain fundamental data on the retorting of oil-shale; particularly as regards the effect of certain variable factors in the process of retorting on the quantity and quality of products yielded from oil shales when they are subjected to destructive distillation. From careful examination of a con siderable number of suggested processes for treating oil shales and the con flicting ideas on which they are designed, it seems probable that accurate information of a fundamental nature is highly essential to the successful establishment of an oil-shale industry in this country. . Accordingly, the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Colorado, is undertaking to furnish some definite and impartial information of this type through investigations now under way at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. A retort for the distillation of oil from oil shale has been designed and installed, together with the necessary auxiliary equipment for controlling and determining variable factors of distillation, and for recovering and de termining the quantity and quality of the products yielded from the shales. The retort is of such a nature that conditions of retorting can be accurately . and completely controlled, and varied at will. It is not designed as a com mercial retort, but only for research purposes. A testing laboratory with equipment necessary for the examination of the shales, physically and chemic ally, and the products yielded by them, has also been fitted up . The material used in the investigations is oil shale obtained from the DeBeque, Colorado, shale field. It yields on distillation in the Bureau of Mines testing apparatus, about 42 gallons of oil to the ton, and is there fore a fairly representative sample of the shales that probably will be first worked in Colorado. The shale used will be as uniform as possible in character and oil yield and will all be obtained from the same seam at the same point, in order to avoid the introduction of unnecessary variable factors in the tests and to render results strictly comparable •

The Missouri Pb ores are the only domestic Co resource being mined and processed for other metals; therefore, they present a viable short-term opportunity for Co production. Lead, zinc, and copper concentrates are produced from the ore. The Cu concentrate can contain up to 30 pct Co and the Pb concentrate up to 15 pct Co. Since Co is detrimental to the processing of the Zn concentrate; the remainder of the Co is rejected to the tailings. The tailings can contain as much as 50 pet Co originally present in the mined ore. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have successfully tested on a continuous basis a process that recovers a bulk sulfide concentrate from mill tailings. The concentrate contains up to one-half of the Co and from 50 to 90 pct of the Pb, Zn, and Cu. Concentrate weight represents 10 pet or less of the total tailings.

Chronic whole-body vibration exposure, as expected in large construction and mining vehicles, has been associated with neck and back pain and injury.1 While work has been done towards gaining a better understanding of the relationship between vibration and shock and muscle activity of the back musculature2, relatively little information regarding the activity of neck, shoulder and upper arm muscles is known. Today’s equipment designs must conform to domestic and international standards, however these standards do not specifically address the vibration exposure in the head and upper quarter. Further it is not well known how the control configuration within a vehicle (e.g. steering wheel versus arm controls) influences muscle voluntary and reflex activity levels. Greater muscle activity may lead to greater muscle fatigue – which in turn may be associated with greater risk of injury.2 Thus, muscle contractions needed to maintain static postures as well as those resulting reflexively should be considered during an analysis of seating position. Unfortunately, little is known regarding the influence of arm position on head and neck muscle function. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative muscle activities of 5 neck, shoulder, and upper arm muscles during riding simulations of large construction equipment, using three different arm control options. Methods Five typical heavy equipment ride files were “played back” through a man-rated Servo Test 6-degree of freedom (dof) vibration system. Each ride was repeated using 3 seat and control configurations (steering wheel (SW), floor mounted arm-rest controls (FM), seat mounted arm-rest controls (SM)). Two trials were performed for each ride and seat control combination (each trial: 60 sec of 6-dof and 60 sec of vertical vibration). Five channels of surface electromyography (EMG) of the right-side cervical erector spinae muscles (neck extensors), sternocleidomastoid (neck flexor), upper trapezius (shoulder elevator), biceps brachii (elbow flexor) and triceps brachii (elbow extensor) muscles were collected throughout each ride (~ 2min) using pre-amplified (10x), 1 cm silver bar electrodes, with 1 cm fixed inter-electrode distances (Delsys, Inc). Further analog amplification was set at 10k (1k for one subject), and sampled at 1000Hz using a 12-bit DAQ card and Labview 7.1 software (National Instruments). A total of 7 right-handed male subjects were tested, but only 5 had complete EMG data sets to analyze for this sub-study. EMG was analyzed using root mean square (RMS, in mV) of 20 ms moving windows, and then averaged across the entire trial for a measure of mean total muscle activity (voluntary and reflexive). The muscle activity to maintain the static posture was estimated as the mean RMS EMG over a 1 sec interval just prior to and/or after completion of the ride. Repeated Measures ANOVAs were used to test for with-in subject differences using a = 0.05.
