Some of the investigations conducted by the Bureau of Mines have for their object the collecting and disseminating of information regard- ing methods by which the fuels of the country may be most effi- ciently used. As the analysis of flue gases tends to develop better methods of firing, which in turn reduces waste of fuel, the Bureau of Mines in this bulletin presents for the benefit of those in charge of boiler plants and all other persons interested detailed information on methods of sampling and analyzing flue gases, and on the utilization of the analyses in promoting boiler-room economy. This bulletin is intended to be a companion to Technical Paper 80," and is written in plain and nontechnical language, as far as pos- sible, so that it may be readily understood by persons who have not had the advantage of a technical education. Whenever possible, illustrations of apparatus and methods of handling have been used rather than elaborate descriptions. The material presented in this report is arranged in two parts. The first part contains the description of the apparatus and the methods used in sampling and analyzing flue gases. The second part gives experimental results obtained with the different methods of sampling and collecting flue gas that are recommended in the first part of the report. Only simple apparatus and methods are considered, as they are accurate enough to show the large heat losses due to the use of too much air, and are also accurate enough to indicate any incomplete combustion losses of economic importance. Without doubt the loss due to large excess of air is the greatest one in the boiler room, and can usually be greatly reduced by making proper use of gas analysis. Before engineers in the isolated industrial plants can be induced to analyze for small traces of combustible gases, they must be first taught how to analyze for carbon dioxide (CO), and they must learn to appre- ciate the great possibilities of reducing loss from large excess of air. As part of a joint U.S. Atomic Energy Commission-Federal Bureau of Mines program for using nuclear energy to supply process heat, a simulated nuclear loop has been constructed to test components. This loop has been operated for more than 1,800 hours at 100 p.s.i.g. Of this period, 23 hours were at 2,500° F. and higher; 540 at 2,000° to 2,500° F.; 840 at 1,500° to 2,000° F.; 200 at 1,000° to 1,500° F.; and 260 below 1,000° F. Leakage at flanges and welds was not a serious problem. A helium-recycle system with gas temperatures of 2,300° to 2,500° F. and a static pressure of 250 p.s.i.g. appears feasible. Difficulties were encountered with the recycle compressor due to thermal distortion of the impeller and shaft. The use of sealed bearings limits compressor operation to the life of the bearings.

The Bureau of Mines developed a concentration method to upgrade and utilize marginal natural or direct-shipping iron ores and fine-grained lean iron ores. Presently these ores receive little beneficiation and accordingly have low iron-silica (Fe-Si02) ratios. Ore samples were roasted with equal weights of solid reductant at 1,100° C for 1 hour to metallize the iron and for an additional hour at 1,200° C to promote grain growth. Concentration was effected by crushing and screening techniques and/or wet magnetic separation. Sized concentrates (minus 4 plus 35 mesh) derived from crushing-screening processes contained from 80 to 85 percent iron that was 90 percent metallized. Iron-silica ratios as high as 12:1 and iron recoveries from 75 to 94 percent were obtained. The sized concentrates were judged suitable for use as blast furnace feed. Minus 200-mesh metallized concentrates derived from roasted minus I-inch plus 8-mesh ore fractions and magnetically concentrated contained 90 percent Fe and 4 percent or less Si02, chemically qualifying them as feed for electric furnaces. Roasting minus 8-mesh ore with hydrogen, then magnetically concentrating it, produced iron concentrates containing 57 percent to 67 percent Fe and 3.6 percent to 8.4 percent Si02. The concentrates having Fe-Si02 ratios ranging from 8:1 to 12:1 were considered adequate for use as blast furnace feed. Overall iron recoveries for the 12 ores tested ranged from 56 percent to 94 percent with an average iron recovery of 86 percent.

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. "Preliminary examination of the Glass Buttes mercury deposits, Lake County, Oregon, was made in August 1945 at the request of W. S. Lazier, present lessee of the deposit.Most of the prospect openings in the area were inspected. The more significant workings were sampled and napped in detail. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation to date.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. noon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. P. S. Dean, assistant director.Special acknowledgment is due to S. H. Lorain, chief, Albany Division, Mining Branch and to S. R. Zimmerley, chief, Salt Lake City, Utah, Metallurgical Division, for analyses of the ores.The presence of quicksilver in the Glass Buttes district has been known since about 1930. The area immediately north of Middle Butte has been superficially prospected by numerous test pits, trenches, shafts, and short adits, which revealed a number of opalized zones. Many of these opalized zones contain weak to strong concentrations of cinnabar. The area has not boon explored thoroughly; no mercury has been produced from any of its deposits.A block of 48 full-size claims has been located to cover a large part of the area in sections 34 and 3, Tps. 23 and 24 S.,R. 23 E.,W.M. These claims, held by, location are owned by H. S. Miller, lumberman of Bend, Ore. W. S. Lazier, 10N. W. 20th Avenue, Portland, Ore., currently controls the property under,a nominal leasing agreement. J. W. McDaniel, 44 Lake Place, Bend, Ore., has done much of the underground and surface exploration on the property.The Glass Buttes district is an area of low relief in the Deschutes River drainage system near the northeast corner of Lake County, Ore. (See fig. 1.) The arid climate is marked by extremes of winter and summer temperature. Water for cane use is not available in the immediate area. Well water, however, can be obtained in limited supply on ranch property 5 miles to the south."

The Federal Bureau of Mines provided five test materials--amosite, short-and long-fiber chrysotile, crocidolite, and nonfibrous tremolite--to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) for studies on the biological effects of orally ingested asbestos-related materials. An inter-agency agreement between the Bureau and NIEHS made possible this program to characterize these test materials. The Bureau in turn received support through contracts with the Ontario Research Foundation for the milling of amosite and crocidolite, and with the University of Maryland for microscopic measurements. The five test materials, which were supplied in quantities of 960 to 1,200 pounds each, were characterized by chemical-instrumental analysis for elemental composition, surface area, density, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, mineralogy, and particle size analyses. Particle size distributions were emphasized because of the current theories relating adverse biological effects to length-width characteristics of durable elongated particles.

Mineral production was confined to out-put of cement and gravel. However, exploration was being conducted by the U.S.S.R. and the United Nations Development Program. Development of a domestic limestone deposit and crude oil from an offshore oilfield was underway. Benin's currency remained fixed to the French franc. The gross domestic product (GDP) was $977 million in 1981, the latest year for which information was available. 2 COMMODITY REVIEW Cement.-Construction of a cement plant with 500,000 tons per year capacity neared completion at Pobé. The operator of the plant, using locally produced limestone, was the Societe des Ciments d'Onigbolo, a joint venture between Benin and Nigeria. Nigeria was expected to utilize most of the cement produced. Equipment for the plant included a 1,600-ton-per-day, oil-fired pre-heater.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale flammability experiments to investigate the possible use of water spray systems for inerting or quenching mine-gas ignitions, such as those encountered at the working face of a coal mine. The inerting results for premixed methane-air-water mixtures indicated that water droplets of less than 10 µm tend to be as effective as the vapor. Water requirements for inerting such mixtures were much smaller than those for quenching the sustained flame propagation by the application of water sprays. The minimum water mass concentration for quenching methane-air flames increased linearly with increasing droplet diameter (surface weighted mean) and decreased with increasing spray temperature, whereas the droplet surface area required per unit volume was essentially constant for a given gas mixture composition. Data extrapolations indicated that a quenching system may be feasible for the longwall mining application.

"INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARYDuring the latter part of 1943 a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahepac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by ""pinching"" or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance the original ore body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained. ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States and Alaska since 1939. The Mahopac mine was visited by W.T. Millar, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines, on June 5, 1943, accompanied by Dr. William Agar of the Federal Survey, and again on July 29, 1943, accompanied by Dr. A. F. Buddington and H.F. The Bureau of Mines 8-liter flammability system was used to study the effectiveness of a variety of powdered inhibitors in preventing the propagation of explosions of coal dust or methane in air. Over 35 different chemical additives were evaluated against Pittsburgh seam pulverized coal. The least effective inhibitors were the carbonates, which required mass additions in the range of two to three parts inhibitor to one part of coal dust in order to prevent propagation. The most effective inhibitors were the derivatives of ammonium phosphate, which were effective quenching agents at additions of only one part inhibitor to four parts of coal dust. Alkali halide powders were of intermediate effectiveness. These laboratory-scale results are in good agreement with full-scale mine experiments in all cases where detailed comparisons have been made. Data were also obtained for the effectiveness of several of the same powdered inhibitors against methane-air explosions. Their relative order of effectiveness and the concentration ranges required for quenching the gas explosion are comparable to those measured for coal dust explosions. Data are also presented for the effectiveness of N2 and CF3Br addition. Some preliminary data are also presented for powder addition to methane burner flames. Those data are compared with other burner data and evaluated in terms of their relevance to explosion tests.

Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. The Bureau of Mines investigated an electrolytic technique for oxidizing ore slurried with brine to determine its effectiveness in extracting mercury from ores. Optimization experiments conducted on a 2.5-pound-mercury-per-ton ore resulted in 95 percent mercury extraction with operating conditions of 30° C, a current density of 0.5 ampere per square inch, and a treatment time of 3.5 hours. Corresponding power consumption amounted to 38 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Amenability experiments conducted on 62 different mercury ores resulted in 90 to 99 percent mercury dissolution from ores containing 0.6 to 20 pounds of mercury per ton of ore, Treatment time ranged from 1 to 7 hours in 4-to 20-percent sodium chloride solutions, and power consumption was in the range of 10 to 50 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Pilot mill experiments in a 100-to 200-pound-per-hour extraction plant have been in progress to quantify power and reagent requirements. These data will be reported in a subsequent publication.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Robena No. 4, located near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief tine periods. With present instrumentation, the spectrum can be covered from 40 Hz to 400 kHz. It is recorded using broad-band analog magnetic tape, and the noise data are later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise envelopes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of tine to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots. The general results are that at frequencies below 10 kHz, power line noise within the mine is severe. Impulsive noise is severe near arcing trolleys, and at lower frequencies near any transmission line. Carrier trolley phone signals and harmonics are strong throughout the mine whenever the trolley phone is in operation. Additional information beyond that included in this report may be obtained from the authors, who are with the Electromagnetics Division of the National Bureau of Standards.

This report describes the results of a measurement and analysis program to characterize wireless radio transmission in metal/non-metal mines over a wide frequency range from 0.2 - 1000 MHz and over a variety of mine environments. Six mines were chosen based on the relative economic significance of their product to the U.S. economy. Mine types include oil shale, uranium, potash, lead/zinc, copper, and silver. Particular mines were chosen so that the group would embody the most important mining techniques. The results show that transmission at medium frequencies are optimum for wireless mine communications, in agreement with extensive testing previously performed by the authors In coal mines, and that mine-wide wireless systems are feasible with a minimum requirement for new dedicated wiring. At least one need for such a wireless system was identified in each mine visited.

Mainland China To Pay Japanese Company On Contract Claim. - Mitsubishi will receive $39 million from Red China, half of what was asked, for China's having, curtailed work on a 5369 million steel rolling mill at Baoshan near Shanghai. Copper Found in Chile. - Utah International Inc., in conjunction with Getty Oil Co., has discovered a cooper deposit in northern Chile. Early drilling reveals an enriched zone grading 1.2% to 2 3% copper. Chile already has tie world's largest Cu reserve base. Soviets To Aid Laotian Tin Industry. - The U.S.S.R. has agreed to help strengthen the tin industry in Laos, a client state. In the past, Laos has only produced small amounts of tin concentrate, 500 tons to 1,000 tons per year presumably shipped to smelters in Singapore or Penang, Malaysia. Under the agreement made in June, the Soviets are to supply equipment to increase the out put of tin from the Phontieu, Neng, and Nongsen mines and help Laos with the construction of a tin smelter. The U.S.S.R. itself is a net importer of tin, although a substantial producer of the metal.

The Bureau of Mines studied the feasibility of producing copper matte in an electric furnace from blends of copper concentrate similar to those currently smelted in a gas-fired reverberatory system at an installation in Tacoma, Wash. A 800-kva electric-arc furnace was used to determine the distribution of constituents when arseniferous concentrates are being smelted in an electric-arc furnace. Test results from smelting 40 tons of materials indicated that electric smelting is more like a conventional gas-fired system than originally expected. Although gas composition over the molten bath is much different in an electric furnace, the secondary constituents such as arsenic, lead, zinc, and antimony behaved the same as in a reverberatory furnace. The results established that an electric furnace would be compatible with sulfur and particulate recovery facilities that are being used.

Diesel-powered haulage equipment is used in this mine, and the electromagnetic noise environment it creates was measured to see how it differs from the environment created by electric-powered haulage equipment. This report summarizes 10 selected Bureau of Mines research contract reports produced from 1970 to 1980 which consist largely of geologic studies of coal mine roof support problems. Significant highlights from the contract final reports are discussed and presented in practical terms. The selected reports focus on the Appalachian and Illinois coal mining regions. In the Appalachian coal region, two geologic structures, roof rolls and slickensides, predominate over all structures as features that directly contribute to roof falls. Studies of these and other structures are reviewed, and improved methods of utilizing drill core and core logs to prepare hazard maps are presented. Among the reports described are several on the weakening effects of moisture on shale roof, as determined from both laboratory and underground measurements, and an assessment of air tempering as a humidity-control method. Also summarized are findings concerning the time lapse between roof exposure and permanent support installation as a factor in the effectiveness of roof bolting.
