The Bureau of Mines has conducted a laboratory and field corrosion test¬ing program to determine materials of construction for the leaching and gas-sparging crystallization environments of the clay-HC1 process in order to more fully utilize the alumina from domestically available kaolinitic clays. Laboratory tests were used to determine the corrosion rates of 22 metals and alloys by weight-loss measurements in these two environments of the process. The results of this laboratory study were used both to suggest metals and alloys for field testing and to determine the effect of the individual solution components on the corrosion behavior of the metals and alloys. Results from the field tests were used to recommend Ta, Ta-2.5W, and Ta-10W for con¬struction of the agitators for the leaching process. The metals and alloys recommended for construction of the gas-sparging crystallizer heat exchangers were Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb, Nb-1Zr, Nb-3Zr, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the first stage and Ta, Ta-2.5W, Ta-10W, Nb-28Ta-10W-1Zr, Nb, Nb-10Hf-1Ti, and Zr for the second stage.

Information Circular (IC) 9453 Roof falls continue to be the greatest single safety hazard faced by underground coal miners. During1996-99, 44 coal miners lost their lives in rock falls and nearly 2,400 were injured. In addition, nearly 6,000 non injury roof collapses were reported. Roof supports are installed to protect the miners, but support system failures contributed to most of these incidents. Reducing the terrible toll taken by ground falls continues to be a major goal of research by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).During 2000-01, NIOSH conducted a series of open industry briefings on New Technology for Coal Mine Roof Support in Norton, VA, Charleston, WV, Evansville, IN, Tuscaloosa, AL, Price, UT, Glenwood Springs, CO, and Washington, PA. Drawing on many years of research undertaken by the NIOSH Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Laboratories, the proceedings describe what types of coal mine roof support are available, how they work, and when they should be used. The major subjects covered include roof bolts, standing roof supports, cable supports, and longwall shields. Some special topics are also addressed, including an analysis of roof fall accident statistics, techniques for better skin control, and material handling considerations. The proceedings volume also contains information on several important new technologies, which are described for the first time, e.g., guidelines for selecting roof bolt

THE TOTAL production of energy in the United States in 1954 decreased 4.6 percent below 1953. The production of coal continued to decline, and the production of crude oil decreased for the first time since 1949. These decreases were partly offset by an increase in the production of natural gas. The total energy production of 35,365 trillion B. t. u. in 1954 was the lowest since 1950. [ ] This drop in energy production was consistent with the 1.1-percent decline in gross national product during the year-from 364.5 billion dollars in 1953 to 360.5 billion in 1954.

Provide guidance on the selection of millisecond initiator delays between blastholes in surface mine blasting to provide a desired degree of rock fragmentation consistent with safety and vibration considerations. The Problem Blasting remains the primary means of fragmenting, rock for all kinds of mining, quarrying, construction, and excavation activities, and it is the only practical and economic method of breaking up and moving large amounts of material such as coal overburden and stone aggregate. Because of the large amount of blasting done, typically using 4 billion pounds of explosive to break about 8 billion tons of rock annually in the United States, a small improvement in blasting performance will have a significant productivity impact. Standard blasting practices involve the selection of time delays in a blast for at [cast three purposes: (1) to control energy flow to minimize adverse vibrations, (2) to provide sufficient time relief for good rock displacement, appropriate muck pile shape for digging, and the prevention of collar violence, misfires, and flyrock, and (3) to provide an appropriate amount of interhole stress wave and gas pressure action for a desired fragmentation size distribution. Timing guidelines that exist are based on subjective observations rather than measurements, even for the relatively new casting methods. Until this Bureau study, no definitive analysis had been done to quantify the fragmentation and productivity of full-scale blast rounds as functions of precision delay timing.

The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (WIDCO), evaluated the dewatering of fine coal-refuse slurry using chemicals and various types and combinations of drains in natural earth impoundments. About 40 lb of lime and 2 lb of polymer per ton of dry solids were mixed with the underflow from the preparation-plant thickener. Clear, free water was immediately liberated from the slurry. The percent solids by weight of the slurry increased from about 17 to 30 immediately, and after 5 days increased to 45 wt-pct. This indicates a threefold reduction in total volume after 5 days from 172 cu ft/ton solids originally to 56 cu ft/ton solids.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of unsupported liquid emulsion membranes (LEM's) for the extraction of copper from relatively dilute aqueous solutions (=0.3 and 2.5 g/L Cu), The performance characteristics of the three main unit operations of an LEM circuit (emulsion generation, metal extraction, and emulsion breaking) were assessed in laboratory-scale batch tests. In single-stage extraction tests using 2.5-g/L Cu feed solution, emulsion membranes extracted up to 94 pct of the copper from solutions without pH adjustment and 99.7 pct when the pH was maintained at about 2.5. Simulated two-stage crosscurrent and countercurrent circuits extracted all but 3 and 4 ppm of the original copper content, respectively. Extraction data from solutions containing mixtures of metals indicated a strong preference for Cu2+ extraction when oxime-type extractants were used in the LEM; however, some coextraction of Fe 3+ and Zn2+ was experienced. An electrostatic coalescer was used to break the copper-loaded emulsions for separation of the component phases. Up to 96 pct of the contained stripping solution (internal solution) containing the extracted copper was separated from the organic phase of the emulsion membrane. The recovered organic phase was recycled without apparent problems.

Grinding experiments were conducted to determine the finest anthracite particles that could be produced in a ball mill. Continuous and batch tests were run in a dry-grinding ball mill. Batch grinding produced the finest coal particles. They averaged 2.2 microns in diameter and were 99.0 percent smaller than 37 microns. Continuous grinding yielded a product 6.1 microns in diameter, with 96 percent smaller than 37 microns.

"Records of individual wells form the basis for the successful operation of any company engaged in the production of petroleum. The expense attached to the compilation of records is negligible in comparison with the benefits resulting from their use. There a company has not a complete system of records, immediate attention should be given to the preparation of forms upon which to collect data, and, to the collection of data for these forms. The records needed vary with each district, but for each field a set should be adopted that will best meet the needs of each property. Practically all operators, and particularly all successful operators, agree on the necessity of good records, shopping what the wells have done, are doing, and may be expected to do in the future. Any operator realizes the value of records of sales of oil and should place almost equal emphasis on the records of well logs and histories showing the east and present performances of wells. Indeed, trustworthy records are absolutely necessary for the proper operation of any oil or gas property.Complete records should be kept on each well from the time the location and elevation are determined until the well is abandoned, and the engineer should review old records often enough to be familiar with the past performance of the various wells and with the conditions that affect production. Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

The law of June 5, 1911, suplements and amends the Laws of April 21, 1810 (the basic law) and May 2, 1837. The Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, coordinates the provisions of the Law of June 5, 1911, with those of the Laws of April 21, 1810, of May 2, 1837, and of July 8, 1865, that have remained in force, as well as with certain articles of the Law of September 1, 1913, which revisad the system of taxation. The revised code has been brought together in one volume.3 All citations in this abstract refer to the coordinating Royal Decree of September 15, 1919, unless it is otherwise specifically indicated.

From 1870 to the end of 1929 the coal production of Utah has been some- what less than 110,000,000 tons. During this period at least three major disasters have occurred with fatalities totaling about 380, establishing a decidedly bad record of approximately 3.5 persons killed by major mine explo- sions per million tons of coal produced. Even during the period when there have been no disasters, such as the years 1914 to 1920, inclusive, the fatalities in ordinary working were about 5.4 per million tons produced, against 3.7 per million tons for the whole United States for the same years. The 5-year period following the World War, 1918 to 1922, inclusive, had 4.7 fatalities per million tons; hence, the fatality record in the coal mines of Utah has uniformly been in excess of the average of the coal mines of the entire country. Notwithstanding this poor record, Utah has given to the coal-mining world many excellent safety methods and practices, and Utah coal mines in general take greater measures toward safe mining than do the coal mines of any other State; if practices and methods allowed and pursued in coal mines of other States were tried in Utah coal mines, there would be a succession of disasters.

Two methods are presented to determine the mechanical shaft torque as a function of time for an induction motor. The methods are based on the motor equivalent circuit and use as input variables of the motor terminal voltage, line current, input power, and power factor. One method uses all four variables and the other uses only voltage and current. The test data deals specifically with continuous miners, but the theory could be applied to other mining machines driven by multiple induction motors. Results are given for the tramming, maneuvering, cutting, and cutting with loading operations and are in the form of a minimum, a maximum, and an average of the shaft-torque time function. The theoretical development and computer implementation are discussed for both methods.

THIS INFORMATION CIRCULAR contains 1956 and 1957 injury experience and employment data for metal mines in the United States and Alaska. Unlike previous publications, this report covers only metal mining and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines and mills reporting voluntarily to the Bureau of Mines on an annual basis. Injury and employment data for the nonmetal industries, which from 1911 through 1955 were published in the same series as the metal industries, for the first time will be published separately as an information circular entitled "Injury Experience in the Nonmetal Industries, 1956 and 1957." The Bureau of Mines is authorized to make requests for injury and employment data, and the information submitted by operators of metal mines and mills is a step forward in promoting safety in the metal-mining industry. Every effort has been made to make this coverage as complete as possible.

Reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, from State mine inspectors, for November, 1930, showed that 219 men were killed in the coal mines of the United States during the month, an increase of 25 over the previous month and 33 over November, 1929. On the other hand the production of coal decreased, the output of 43,329,000 tons in November being 8,397,000 tons less than in October and 9,005,000 tons less than in November a year ago. The larger number of fatalities accompanied by a smaller output of coal resulted in a higher death rate4 per million tons in November than in the same month last year or in October, 1930. The November rate was 5.05, as compared with 3.55 for November, 1929 and 3.75 for October, 1930. The increase in the rate for the industry as a whole was chargeable entirely to bituminous mines,, as the anthracite mines had fewer fatalities in November than in either of the previous months to which reference has been made. Reports for bituminous mines alone 'allowed that accidents at class of mines resulted in a death rate of 5.12, based on 195 fatalities and a production of 38,122,000 tons. This rate indicated an increase of 55 per cent over the rate for October, of the same year, and 72 per cent over the rate for November, 1929. The October record was 146 fatalities and 44,150,000 tons, and that for November a year ago was 138 deaths and a production of 46,514,000 tons. Twenty-four deaths occurred at anthracite mines in November, 1970: the output of coal was 5,207,000 tons, hence the rate was 4.61 per million tons. During the corresponding month a year ago there were 48 deaths and 5,820,000 tons of coal produced, which indicated a death rate of 8.25. In October, 1930, the death rate was o.34; based on 48 deaths and 7,576,000 tons.

Over the past two decades, there have been significant reductions in industrial exposures to hand-arm vibration, especially when specific tools and work processes have been redesigned to incorporate anti-vibration and ergonomic principles. Nevertheless, Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) remains a significant occupational health problem as disease symptoms continue to occur even when vibration exposure levels believed to incur low risks have been reached2. This inconsistency may be related to the methodology that is typically used to estimate workday vibration exposure levels, involving laboratory and/or very short duration field measurements coupled with estimates of overall eight-hour tool operation times determined from brief observations of tool tasks and/or self-reported surveys. One solution is to use small, commercially-available, personal vibration dosimeters to calculate, record, and display long-duration vector sums and energy equivalents of vibration. However, since these devices are attached to the worker and require tool-mounted accelerometers, they are incompatible with the worker performing normal duties involving putting down or changing tools. In addition, these commercial systems do not allow for the characterization of the transmission of vibration to the hand such as monitoring the mechanical coupling between the hand and the tool handle (e.g., grip forces). O’Boyle and Griffin showed that variations in applied force can alter vibration transmission characteristics by 50% or more indicating that the measurement of grip force is essential for modeling vibration transmissibility and vibration exposures5. In summary, a need exists for the development of a method and device that will more accurately characterize workday-long vibration exposures. Methods A portable, light-weight, Vibration Exposure Monitor (VEM) system was developed to record user-specific tool-operating times, vibrations, and grip forces throughout all, or a representative part, of a workday. It monitors frequency weighted and unweighted accelerations from a palm-mounted uni-axial accelerometer (Model 352C22, PCB Piezotronics, Depew, NY) and calculates exposure levels using the root-mean-square (RMS) and higher power mean values, such as the root-mean-quad (RMQ) and the root-mean-oct (RMO). Grip forces are also monitored using a palm-mounted force sensor (Model 400, Interlink Electronics, Camarillo, CA) from which average grip force levels and exerted grip extrema are calculated. At the core of the VEM system is a commercially available, battery-powered microcomputer (Tattletale, Model 8v2, Onset Computer, Onset, MA) with one megabyte of memory and eight analog channels using 12-bit sampling at a single-channel maximum of 100 kHz. Analog signal processing (i.e., anti-aliasing, with cutoffs at 4 and 1250 Hz, and ISO 5349-13 frequency weighting) is accomplished using custom circuitry that is directly interfaced with the microcomputer. A survey of existing and developing field permeability test methods was conducted in order to identify and specify capable methods to be used in feasibility investigations or performance monitoring for in situ leaching of ore deposits. Geologic settings of leachable deposits are discussed, as well as representative techniques used for the in situ leaching operation. Subsurface investigation techniques including drilling, core recovery, and down-hole inspection methods relevant to field permeability investigations are discussed. Field experience is examined and capable field permeability test methods are identified. Specifications for test borehole preparation, test performance. and methods of analysis are given. The test methods are comparatively rated in a matrix with respect to costs ease of use, and data effectiveness' for a broad range of conditions. Well Pump and Packer test methods receive high ratings. Recommendations are made for needed developments in field permeability test methods and a comprehensive bibliography is given.

"In a previous report of the Bureau of Mines (Serial No. 2080 reference was made to a fatal accident from falling rock in a quarry in Utah, and ways of avoiding such accidents were pointed out. A fatal accident similar to it in some respects recently occurred in a limestone quarry in Maryland. All operators of stone quarries are desirous of reducing accidents to a minimum, and almost without exception they welcome any suggestions having in view the establishment of safer quarry practice. It is believed, therefore, that a brief outline of the cir-cumstances surrounding this later accident may be of practical advantage to quarry-men, as it may serve as a guide to them in so conducting operations that such unfortunate occurrences may be reduced in number.The quarry where the accident occurred is in form a circular pit 500 to 600 feet across an 80 to 100 feet deep. The rock is a dense limestone with the beds dipping at an angle of 35 to 45 degrees from the horizontal. Numerous erosion cavities in the form of pockets or narrow spaces following joint planes are filled with red sand and clay. They are confined largely to the upper 20 or 30 feet of the deposit. Open bedding planes are 4 to 10 feet apart toward the surface, and are spaced at wider intervals toward the base of the quarry. The open bedding planes present smooth uniform rock surfaces that dip steeply into the pit at the northeast side of the quarry opening. These smooth surfaces constitute a source of danger, as they may permit loose material to slide into the pit.In this particular instance a blast had been discharged, throwing down a mass of rock for steam-shovel loading. Three men wore employed thereafter for a period of about two days in cleaning down all loose material that might be dangerous to workmen luring the loading process. A mass of red sand and clay in which several large bowlders were embedded was left on one of these slanting surfaces, for the material seemed to be sufficiently secure to be quite safe. The lower edge of the slanting surface was about 25 feet above the quarry floor. The quarry conditions are illustrated in fig. 1, where (a) represents the quarry floor, (b) the vertical quarry (c) the slanting joint plane surface, and (d) the rock and earth resting on the surface."
