An anhydrous chlorination process has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for the production of copper, ferric oxide, and sulfur from chalcopyrite. The first part of the process is a chlorination step in which elemental sulfur and a mixture of iron-copper chlorides are produced. This paper describes the second step of the process in which the copper and iron chlorides are reacted with oxygen to selectively convert the iron chloride to ferric oxide and chlorine leaving the copper in the chloride form. The chlorides are pulverized and dropped countercurrent to a flow of oxygen in a vertical 20-cm-diam. reactor at 800° C. By leaching with brine, the copper chloride may be separated from the insoluble iron oxide and reduced to copper powder by electrowinning. It has been demonstrated that 70 to 80 pct of the iron can be converted to oxide in a single-stage operation with a chlorine content in the offgas of 80 pct. After removal of the oxygen, this chlorine could be recycled to the chlorination step. A two-stage operation will convert 98 to 99 pct of the iron in the mixture to insoluble oxides. The offgas from the second stage contains 70 pct chlorine.

Fiber-optic technology is progressing rapidly, including the development of fiber-optic sensors for many applications. These sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity, light weight, small size, high bandwidth, and freedom from electromagnetic influences. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating the use of fiber-optic technology to monitor mine atmospheres. This report describes a methane monitor based on differential absorption of infrared light. The monitor can detect methane concentrations as low as 0.2 vol pct as far away as 2 km via fiber-optic cable. The upper range is 100 vol pct methane. Since the system requires no electrical power within the mine, it is intrinsically safe.

There have appeared, from time to time, comparisons of various features of coal mining practice in the United States and Great Britain. A recent, article, appearing in a British journal, points out that the American miner produces 3 1/2 times as much coal per shift as the miner, at one-half the cost, and proceeds to explain the natural industrial, and engineering causes which lead to this result. Amon« he reasons advanced. is that the American coal miner enjoys the advantage of more easily worked seams of coal, due to the fact that the coal mining industry in the United States is of more recent date than in Great Britain. The latter qualification is not correct, because where these advantages exist, they will persist. The coal beds of the United States are not buried deeply, except in the remote parts of the country, as in the Uinta Basin of Utah. The article referred to states that many of our miners are still employed on out seams reached by "adits", (which we term entries), or by vertical shafts of moderate depth. It is probable in fact that the great bulk of the coal of the United States is taken out from a depth of less than 400 feet.

"INTRODUCTION The Cline mine has been worked intermittently for copper and gold since 1895. Scheelite has recently been detected with the aid of a ""Mineralite"" on the old waste dumps of the mine. Four diamond-drill holes were drilled by the Bureau of Mines from August 13 to September 25, 1946. Results of this drilling showed the vein to pinch at depth and to carry no mineralization of economic importance.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Reduce costs of surface mine reclamation by improving scaper operating efficiency and reducing tire costs. Approach The Wheel Slip Monitor senses and compares the peripheral speed of a scraper's four tires 10 the true ground speed of the scraper, and alerts the operator if any of the tires exceeds a predetermined amount of slip. This system helps scraper operators reduce wheel slip during the loading cycle, thereby improving the loading efficiency of the scaper and reducing tire wear and damage. How It Works The system consists of five ultrasonic doppler velocity-sensing devices for measuring the speed of each wheel as well as the true ground velocity (see photograph). Each sensor produces an electrical output signal having a frequency proportional to the speed of the tire or terrain. The signals are conveyed through electrical cables to a control box in the operator's cab where they are converted to voltages proportional to individual wheel speeds (see photograph). The signals are further processed to activate a blinking red light, corresponding to any individual wheel which is slipping, and to sound a beeping tone that is audible to the scraper operator. The rate at which the light blinks and the tone beeps is proportional to the degree of slip. Alerted, the operator can take corrective action.

The properties of the Colorado Copper Co. in Sinbad Valley, Mesa and Montrose Counties, Colo., were rehabilitated and sampled by the Bureau of Mines in October, November, and December 1942. The several deposits were reexamined in March and April 1945 to obtain information disclosed by company work after December 1942. The development program included surface trenching, rehabilitation of several edits, and channel sampling of the exposures. Assay determinations wore made on 204 samples from the surface and underground workings. The results are given in the appendix. Several copper deposits in the Sinbad Valley area are similar in origin. The host rocks are sedimentary and mice in age from Pennsylvanian to Cretaceous. The Colorado No. 3 deposit occurs in the Cutler formation, which consists of many small lenses of conglomerate, sandstone, and shale. Mineralization is closely associated with faulting. On the Pyramid group the enrichment occurs in a zone of fracturing and jointing end also spreads into the adjoining sandstone. The ore deposition on the Copper Rivet claim is associated with a fault zone and is confined to en area above the contact of the Dolores-Wingate formations. Mineral deposits on the Sinbad claims occur at intersections of faults with blue-gray Pennsylvania limestone. Copper enrichment occurs along faults and as replacement of the surrounding limestone. Metallurgical tests indicate that ores from the Colorado No. 3 and Pyramid claims can be treated successfully by leaching with sulfuric acid. This method cannot be applied to ores from the Copper Rivet or Sinbad deposits because of high calcite content. Flotation tests at Boulder City, Nev., showed a recovery of less than 60 percent with a 14.24 percent copper concentrate.

This report summarizes the results of a hydrologic research study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in cooperation with Energy West Mining Co. at the Deer Creek and Cottonwood Mines, near Orangeville, UT. The USBM evaluated hydrologic and overburden failure data to assess the response of local ground water to underground coal mining in single-and multiple-seam conditions. Fourteen springs located over the two mines were investigated in the study along with overburden failure response caused by longwall panel extraction. Spring discharge was compared to climatic variation and time of undermining to quantify response to undermining. Spring discharge had been reduced owing to below-normal precipitation during the period evaluated. The response of springs to mining in the vicinity was influenced in part by the thick overburden present at the study site the presence of hydrophilic clays and mudstones in the overburden stratigraphy, and elevation of the springs above mine level, which buffered the effects of undermining.

Improve the health and safety of underground mine workers by finding ways of keeping them away from unsupported areas of the mine. Background Roof falls have been the leading cause of fatal accidents in the underground coal mining industry. During 1985-89, 92 coal miners were killed by falls of roof and rib, with more than 4,000 miners injured. According to accident investigation reports from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, 47% of the victims of these fatal roof fall accidents were in the area of unsupported roof al the time they were killed. There is an urgent need to find out why miners go under unsupported roof and to devise strategies for preventing this unsafe behavior. Approach To discover what can be done to prevent miners from going under unsupported roof, confidential interviews were conducted with 297 miners who work in the face crews of 6 different coal mines. The interview topics included company policies and actions regarding going under unsupported roof, how foremen react to people who go under unsupported roof, circumstances likely to cause some people to go under unsupported roof and how to prevent these situations, and observations concerning those who go under unsupported root.

This study is one of a number conducted to determine the concentration of dust in the air during the complete cycle of operation in wet drilling information as to various factors connected with drilling in mining operations is considered to be of definite value in the control and prevention of air dustiness, and it is particularly desirable to ascertain What features of present-day wet-drilling operations in mine work contribute to dust disease and to remedy deficiencies when they are found. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS A testing alit through rock strata is being developed by the Mining Division of the United States bureau of Mines at Mount Weather, Va., and the tests discussed in this report were conducted there. This experimental alit in rock, constitutes a typo of laboratory where mine conditions can be closely simulated and where many of the variables likely to occur in an actual mine can be eliminated or at least controlled with reasonable effort, thus affording maximum opportunities to secure fundamental data uncomplicated by extraneous conditions. Samples of gas were obtained directly from the coalbed during drilling of horizontal and vertical boreholes in six different formations. The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography for C1 to C5 hydrocarbons and for 02, H2, H2, He, and C02. Methane in the gas varied from 63 to 99 percent; carbon dioxide from 0.1 to 15 percent. The CH4 /CO2 ratio varied and showed no apparent correlation with age, rank, or bed. The majority of samples contained ethane, propane, and butane; hydrogen and helium were found in some samples. Oxygen and nitrogen were usually present, possibly as a result of air contamination. A more extensive sampling program would be necessary to establish relationship between the amount and composition of the gas in the coalbed and other factors.

Laboratory and underground studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to evaluate the effectiveness of a water-powered scrubber and a brattice partition to create a clean split of air for longwall workers at the tailgate. In simulated laboratory tests, the system was very effective in creating a clean split of air. Observed system efficiencies were 74 and 84 pct with induced airflows of approximately 2,000 and 2,500 cfm, respectively. Underground evaluations indicated that the system was capable of reducing respirable dust at the tailgate. The first underground evaluation resulted in protection efficiencies of 30.7 and 42.5 pct at scrubber water pressures of 150 and 450 psig, respectively. A 33.7-pct protection efficiency was observed in the second underground evaluation with a modified partition and the scrubber operating at 250-psig water pressure. To be most effective, the system should have the scrubber operating at a flowrate of 10 gpm at 500 psig to deliver a maximum quantity of cleaned air behind a well-sealed partition.

In 1984 and 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied part of the 162,887-acre Mormon Mountains Wilderness Study Area (NV-050-161) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Lincoln County, NV, about 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The study area had no mines or mining claims in 1985, and no mineral resources were identified within the study area, or at the Whitmore mine or Iron Blossom prospect near the study area. The alluvial fans around the southern boundary are staked with about 450 placer claims. Chemical analyses of samples indicate that some limestone in the study area is suitable for manufacturing cement or for agricultural purposes but the limestone is distant from markets and therefore not economic in the foreseeable future. The study area is blanketed with oil and gas leases, but no known productive horizons were identified.

The very modest-sized mineral industry of Afghanistan was burdened for another year with problems of internal strife occassioned by the presence of Soviet armed forces. Despite this, production of the few traditional commodities continued, and the mineral industry moved to develop additional mines and plants for both traditional and new products with considerable technical and construction assistance from the U.S.S.R. Among the limited range of mineral commodities for which production was reported, there were no startling changes between 1984 and 1985. Production of both coal and natural gas advanced only slightly, despite substantially higher 5-year plan goals, and cement output was down marginally. Probably the most significant development in 1985 was the Possibility that mine and/or smelter production of copper was initiated during the year.

In 1990, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 12.321 acre Black Warrior study area, one of several proposed additions to the Sawtooth Wilderness. No identified mineral resources were delineated. There were 123 lode and placer claims in or adjacent to the study area. There is a known hot spring adjacent to the study area, but presently no geothermal leases are pending. Lode mines in pr adjacent to the Black Warrior study area have produced 4,022 tons of ore from which 1,981 oz of gold and 811 oz of silver were recovered. None of the vines are currently active. During the field study 125 rock samples were taken. Significant gold assays and favorable geologic characteristics at seven properties indicate that gold occurrences and resources with byproduct metals may exist in the study area. Two other sites yielded anomalous gold assays; however, sage favorable geologic characteristics are lacking. Presently, identified gold resources are being delineated by drilling programs in the nearby Atlanta and Rocky Bar mining districts. These districts have geologic characteristics similar to the Black Warrior area. During the field study 22 placer samples were taken. In most places where an anomalous concentration of gold was found, the stream channels are too narrow for operations other than recreational suction dredges. However. One area is estimated to contain over 2 million yd3 of gold-bearing gravels.

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for AN-FO haulers. Approach An automatic fire sensing and suppression system for AN-FO haulers was developed and on-vehicle tested. How It Works The system works in two ways to protect personnel from dangerous and unpredictable AN-FO fires. First the system senses and suppresses fires on the truck before they spread to the AN-FO in the bunker. This design was chosen because AN-FO truck fires generally start when combustible liquids (such as diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid or lubricating oils) are ignited by hot surfaces mainly on three areas: the engine, the transmission or the power take-off. These fires are quickly sensed by a linear temperature sensor strung throughout these three areas. The system then warns the operator and automatically suppresses the fire by discharging 30 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent through a network of fixed hoses and nozzles. Second, this system includes six spot thermal sensors mounted inside the bunker on the truck to monitor the AN-FO temperature in case a fire does spread to the bunker area. The standard enthalpy of formation, low-temperature heat capacities, and enthalpy increments above 298 K were determined by the Federal Bureau of Mines for synthetic dawsonite [NaA1C03(OH)21. The enthalpy of formation was determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry, with the result ?Hf°298 = -469.4±0.7 kcal/mole. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 6 to 307 K by adiabatic calorimetry. Tabulated are low-temperature values of Cp°, S°, and H.-Ho° from 3 to 298 K. The derived entropy at 298 K is S298 = 31.55±0.3 cal/deg mole. Enthalpy increments above 298 K were obtained by copper-block drop calorimetry. Tabular data of Cp°, S°, H°-H°298, -(G°-H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf are given from 298 to 477 K. Enthalpies and Gibbs energies of decomposition are also reported.

Research was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a well-point dewatering system in conjunction with a french drain to intercept waste impoundment leakage while reducing the volume of waste water requiring treatment. A well-point dewatering system composed of 585 production wells was installed around the perimeter of a leaking impoundment that previously used only a french-drain system for leakage control. The placement of the well-point system was designed to intercept and remove the leakage from the groundwater before the contaminant reached the french drain. Groundwater monitoring at this site revealed that after a period of approximately 40 days the well-point dewatering system had stabilized and effectively prevented the further spread of contamination to the french drain.

Exploration of the Antimony Peak district by the Bureau of Mines was conducted under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act of 1939. Antimony was one of the seven metals designated at that time as strategic by the Secretaries of War, Navy, and Interior upon advice of the Army and Navy Munitions Board. As a result of many field examinations, the Antimony Peak property was chosen as one of the most attractive for the possible development of emergency antimony reserves. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines began in November 1940 and was concluded in May 1941.
