The mining industry worldwide is currently facing a significant restructuring process. In most underground mines, widespread mechanization of the mining processes increases production while reducing staff numbers. At the same time, mining depths as well as the lateral spread of the mine workings are increasing. This ever-changing mining environment requires sophisticated solutions for the design and operation of underground mines. In fact, a reduced number of mining engineers is taking responsibility for everincreasing mine operations. This applies not only to the excavation of the minerals, but also to all other aspects of the mining operation, including health and safety, disaster management, and mine rescue organization. Most mining engineering graduates entering the industry lack experience in mine emergency management. Young engineer trainees must learn mine emergency management and rescue work in addition to their normal training experience on the job. Often, and unfortunately, emergency and rescue training at different mining companies is not carried out to the highest level and standard and with the best possible training outcomes. The tasks and challenges a young engineer faces while being trained in a new position do not leave much room for additional training in mine rescue and emergency management. At the same time, experienced, ?old hands? are retiring and cannot easily be replaced due to limited graduation numbers. Strategies are being developed at mining universities worldwide to train mining engineering students in handling mine emergency situations and to provide hands-on experience for managing potential accident and disaster scenarios underground. Two of these strategies, from the USA and from Central Europe, are presented in this paper. These specific strategies have to be seen under special consideration of the local and regional boundary conditions, but might serve as case studies for mining schools and universities in other countries.

The waste-heat boiler is used within the Sulphide flash smelting process as the main dust and energy recovery unit. The large volume of off-gas discharged from the flash smelter is at a very high temperature (1350°C) and contains a significant dust load that subjects the downstream waste-heat boiler to tough and demanding conditions. The boiler cavity is especially prone to dust accretions, fouling, and corrosion caused by accumulation of molten particles and precipitation of sulphuric acid. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied within a qualitative study to model the flow and heat transfer distribution throughout the waste-heat boiler. The commercial CFD package, Fluent 6.2.16, was applied to a modified waste-heat boiler (23 m ×11 m ×5.4 m) within the Outokumpu flash smelting process. This investigation focuses on the geometric modifications to the typical boiler design, which includes elevation of the ceiling, placement of flow-obstructing baffles and radiation plates parallel within the flow path. Also investigated were various boiler operating conditions such as the circulation of process off-gas, air leakage from the dust discharging hoppers and variation in inlet gas composition. The geometric modifications had the desired effect of increasing the volumetric utilization and therefore enhancing heat transfer between the boiler surface and the gas stream and dust segregation. Introducing circulated off-gas at a rate of 20 m/s and at a 45° angle to the front of the waste boiler further enhanced cooling while reducing the high impact of the furnace-uptake gas-stream on the boiler ceiling. The placement of radiation plates was found to be very effective in enhancing the heat transfer surface and distributing gas flow within the boiler. The Chambishi Metals Cobalt Plant in Zambia has recently installed a novel oxidation/precipitation pressure leach process as part of the COSAC (CObalt from Slag And Copper as by-product) Project. Aniron-cobalt-copper alloy, produced by the carbothermic reduction of slag, is atomized and pumped to the COSAC Leach Plant, where cobalt and copper are recovered as dissolved sulphate salts, andiron is rejected primarily as hematite. Cobalt and copper are subsequently recovered as cathode metal in the existing Chambish ioperation by conventional electrowinning. This paper examines the challenges faced during the design and subsequent successful commissioning of the COSAC Leach Plant. The challenges discussed include alloy handling, autoclave design, autoclave cooler design, residue liquor recovery and the water balance design. The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological models even further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip. Composite ores are more often used for production of iron in connection with reserve depletion of traditional ore crude in the regions with developed metallurgy. In particular, the majority of perspective ferrum-ore deposits of the Urals are presented by titanferous magnetite ores which contain a significant amount of titanium and vanadium alongside with ferrum. Thus, the deposits of titanferous magnetites of the Southern Urals on the average contain about 20 % of Fe, 8,7 % TiO2 and 0,24 % V2O5. Due to a high content of titanium oxides it is impossible or it is inexpedient to process such ores in blast furnaces. During work just on titanferous magnetite ore refractory titanium-containing slags are formed in a blast furnace, and in case of its dilution by ores of different types the titanium due to the small content in slag is thrown out. It is often impossible to separate such ores into ferriferous and titanferous concentrates because ferrum and titanium are present in the same minerals. This work attempts to selectively reduce ferrum in solid oxide and to separate metallic iron from titanferousslag with fast fusion. Solid-phase reduction of ferrum has been carried out with carbon at temperature of 1000? 1300°?. In products of solid-phase reduction the extremely disperse mix of metal iron and only partially reduced titanium oxides have been achieved. It is impossible to separate such a mix mechanically. However, the fast fusion of the mix allowed separating it into cast iron and slag with the high content of titanium. Thus the cast iron contained less than 0,1 % of titanium, and the slag did not contain practically any ferrum.

A diverse selection of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are available for use in underground mines. Research in recent years at the UNSW Mining Research Centre led to the construction of a rockbolt pull-testing facility. This facility has subsequently been upgraded, commissioned and initial test work has been completed to verify the pull-test process. A test program has been completed with the objective to understand the load transfer mechanism and improve the general performance of rockbolts. This paper describes the results of this research. Faites des recherches ces dernières années à l'UNSW que le Centre de la Recherche Minier a mené à la construction d'une facilité de l'essai de la traction du rockbolt. Cette facilité a été améliorée par la suite, le travail de l'épreuve en commission et initial a été complété pour vérifier le processus de la traction-épreuve. Un programme de l'épreuve a été complété avec l'objectif comprendre le mécanisme du transfert de la charge et améliorer la performance générale de rockbolts. "The complete and successful closure of a mine in the South African environment remains problematic. Closure remains an elusive mining phase due to unclear roles and responsibilities, inaccurate closure management data, and the inability of stakeholders to conceptualize and integrate closure information into business processes. Currently there are no proven methods available to address the complexities encountered during a closure application, and to date no mine has been granted full closure. Many mines are left abandoned and unrehabilitated, resulting in risk to investors, surrounding communities, and regulators. This investigation aimed to determine, categorize, and rank reasons for unsuccessful mine closures. Focus groups consisting of public and private stakeholders were identified and surveyed through a structured, rank-order questionnaire to determine the relative importance of reasons why achieving formal and final mine closure remains elusive. Various requirements and aspects were identified and listed according to four categories: namely, primary, secondary, process drivers, and information sources. These aspects should be considered in the development of an integrated mine closure model.Background and rationalePrior to 1956, mine closures were not subject to legislative requirements, being merely governed by insufficient environmental regulations under the Mines and Works Act 27 (MWA) (Swart, 2003). In 1981 the Chamber of Mines (COM) published a document titled ‘The rehabilitation of land disturbed by surface coal mining’, which constituted the first notable contribution to environmental protection. This guideline was later referenced in the Minerals Act of 1991, which for the first time laid definite environmental burdens on the Mining Right Holder (MRH). The Minerals Act of 1991 was superseded by the current Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) and the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act Regulations (MPRDAR), which specify a regulatory process for mine closure applications and financial provisions."

A description is given of a simple, cheap device that enables the intact shear strength of rock to be determined quickly and inexpensively. Thin rock plates, prepared with a diamond saw, are tested in double shear by a linear punching action. By varying the direction of the diamond-saw cut in a number of specimens, the change in shear strength can be measured for different orientations relative to the rock fabric.

The extraction of minerals and coal at greater depth, employing higher-powered machinery to improve production levels, imposes an increased burden on the ability of a ventilation system to maintain an acceptable mine climate. Hence, mechanical mine cooling systems are often adopted, which can be expensive in terms of both their associated capital and operating costs. Consequently, in order to optimize the total mining costs, it is essential to provide the mine operator with a method with which to determine the most cost effective and efficient mine cooling system. In a previous paper1a novel energy analysis employing the concept of exergy was proposed and applied to cooling systems applied to two conceptual model mines, representative of UK deep coal operations, and their resultant subsurface thermal environ-mental conditions predicted. This paper presents an analysis of the results obtained from the application of this novel technique to assess the performance of various cooling systems applied to a current UK colliery that is experiencing climatic problems due to its depth and highly mechanized production and development workings. To perform this analysis, ventilation and climatic data collected at the case study mine were used to construct balanced mine ventilation and climatic network models to replicate the subsurface environment. Where air conditions exceeded specified climatic limits within identified climatically control zones, mechanical mine cooling systems were employed. A number of cooling system configurations were applied to these model to investigate the potential to satisfactorily regulate the thermal environment. The heat energy transferred out of the air stream by the various cooling methods was absorbed using a variety of chilled water systems, which were designed to operate at various water flow rates and temperatures. Models of various cooling system were developed and applied to control the underground climate within this mine network to within pre-set climatic limits. The results of a comparative analysis of the energy transfers that were produced by the application of the different cooling systems are presented in the form of exergy performance indices. The results produced by simulation models constructed to represent chilled water distribution networks to supply the various air coolers, are designed and balanced. The results of the exergy analyses applied to the operation of the various chilled water pipe networks are discussed and used to assess the exergetic performance of the application of each proposed cooling system to the mine ventilation network.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have found their applications in the modelling of unit operations of mineral processing plants. In this research, laboratory-scale tests were conducted, using a three-inch diameter Mozley hydrocyclone. Main parameters included pressure drop at inlet, solid per cent, vortex and apex diameter were adjusted. The corrected cut size (d50c) and the flow rates of underflow and overflow were determined. Multi layers perceptron (MLP) feed forward network architectures were designed to predict the responses. The results showed a good correlation between experimental and network output, for corrected cut size and flow rates. Sequential grid mining has been employed as the primary mining strategy at the AngloGold West Wits Elandsrand Mine since the inception of stoping operations from the sub-vertical shaft system in 1988. Little has been published on sequential grid mining as a mining strategy since, and the purpose of this paper is to describe sequential grid mining, its history, its implementation at Elandsrand, and the outcome to date. The results obtained using sequential grid mining have been evaluated from seismic data, productivity statistics, and rock related accident statistics. Comparisons with neighbouring mines namely Western Deep Levels and Deelkraal, have been made to substantiate the improved conditions observed at Elandsrand, and to compare sequential grid mining directly with longwall mining in similar conditions and at similar depths. Sequential grid mMining is shown to be cost-effective, more flexible, and safer than long wall mining in similar conditions, at least on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef in the western part of the Carletonville Goldfield. More work is necessary to establish it as the favoured mining strategy at depths exceeding 3000 metres, and for reefs other than the Ventersdorp Contact Reef.

Our purpose is to record and to explain the widely changing numbers of the huge total of black workers on the gold mines of South Africa over the century from 1896 to 1996. These men were recruited from up to twenty territories, and their contributions are examined. The major areas providing labour over this long period have been Lesotho, the former Transkei within South Africa and Mozambique. From 1989 to 1996, for instance, these three areas accounted for over sixty per cent of the total labour force (tlf). Our principal Figure 1 shows the tlf fluctuating through time to reach a peak of 480 000 in 1988. Irregular falls are also documented with the most serious in 1995 to 180 000. Based on this graph we consider the political, economic, sociological and historical reasons behind these changing employment opportunities. These have included external world-scale events such as war or depression, as well as internal changes of national economy and policy. We show the importance for numbers employed of the discovery of gold in the Orange Free State in 1946, the influence generally of the ?Winds of Change? and the firm maintenance by the State of law and order. Varying gold production costs and profitability against high tax rates, allied with increasing wages and a lack of development capital, have led in the last decade to employment falling by fifty per cent, despite an actually higher value of gold output. Finally, this analysis considers the role of the migrant labour system as it affects, and is affected by, conditions in the gold mining industry, with special reference to its less than humane consequences in the numerically dominant territories of Lesotho and Transkei.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluorides1,2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02.SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F.XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo¬dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

New technologies, such as computer based learning, wireless computing, internet2, online courses, distance learning, and in general multimedia applications are being implemented in the higher education sector in an increasing manner. However, these implementations are not coherent, and lack standards. However, one example of the existing standards is the development and implementation of the virtual learning environments. These technology tools help in delivering the eLearning objectives. There is a major initiative in Europe (eEurope action plan) in promoting eLearning towards creating a knowledge-based society. Technology implementation is the major driver for achieving the eLearning objectives. A two-year pilot project on implementing technology tools including virtual learning environment (VLE), video-conferencing, and simulation and visualization was carried out for providing a blended learning environment for undergraduate and graduate students in Mining Engineering (undergraduate) and Mineral Deposit Evaluation (M.Sc.) course at the Imperial College London. The pilot project was funded by the Imperial College Centre for Educational Development (ICCED). The project did contribute towards activities for creating an institute-wide eLearning strategy in line with the eEurope action plan.

When an underground excavation is created near to an instrumented measuring location, deformation at the location increases. The characteristics of this deformation increase, as well as the duration of the influence caused by the adjacent excavation, is dependent on parameters such as opening geometry and measuring location. In this study, neural networks were applied to investigate the deformation increase and the influence of each parameter on the deformation change derived from extensometer measurements at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in New Mexico, USA.

Keywords: copper, concentrate drying, steam dryer, dryers By placing additional demands on energy and gas flow, the moisture content of a copper concentrate has an adverse effect on the smelting process. Different drying technologies, such as directly heated rotary dryers, flash dryers, and steam dryers, are available to solve this problem. The energy requirements of and off-gas generated from different dryer types are compared. The performance of the steam dryer was found to be superior to that of the others. In particular, the rotary steam dryer and its benefits are discussed. Structural properties confer an advantage on the rotary steam dryer, for wear on tube elements is eliminated, and drying efficiency is improved. If steam is available, the rotary steam dryer is an excellent choice for drying copper concentrates.

It is common practice for underground mine plans to be created sequentially, where results from one planning process form the input data for another. While this is practical for manual methods, computerized optimization techniques should consider an integrated approach to creating the global mine plan. This is because optimizing an individual mine planning process, such as stope layouts, introduces a likelihood of increasing costs or decreasing revenues associated with other areas, such as production scheduling, as harmful decisions must be balanced. Considering the interaction and influence that individual underground mine planning processes have on each other during optimization will provide more profitable results than if these are ignored. Optimization techniques for stope layouts and production scheduling are reviewed. An integer programming model is proposed that allows for either integrated or isolated optimization. Both approaches are separately applied to a block model. The results demonstrate the model?s ability to produce optimal long-term sublevel stoping mine plans and the benefits of using an integrated approach. The modelling of lithological domains is a critical step in mineral resource and reserve evaluation. Deterministic models rely on an interpretation of the available drill hole data and expert knowledge, but do not account for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of the lithological domains. Instead, probabilistic models based on conditional simulation can be used to map the probabilities of occurrence of the domains within the deposit, which reflect the uncertainty in their presence or absence at unsampled locations. The mineral grade model is then obtained by weighting the predicted grades associated with each lithological domain by the probability of occurrence of this domain. Such an approach accounts for the continuity of the grades proper to each lithological domain and for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of these domains within the deposit. A finite elements simulation, combined with a thermal and structural studies were used.
