The BIOX® process was developed for the biological pre-treatment of refractory gold ores and concentrates ahead of conventional cyanide leach gold recovery. Rights to the process are currently with BIOMIN Technologies SA, a subsidiary of Gold Fields Limited. There are currently eight operating installations worldwide employing the process on a commercial scale. EKATO is a company specializing in developing new or optimizing existing mixing applications. EKATO has acquired a vast amount of expertise in agitation over its 75 year history. In a joint research project the reactors of the BIOX® process were characterized from the aspect of their mixing performance. BIOMIN is constantly testing new mixing solutions and reviewing potential vendors to increase the efficiency of the BIOX® process. EKATO?s intention was to qualify as an approved vendor for supplying agitation equipment to the BIOX® process. A two step approach was planned: In phase one of the project EKATO would develop an alternative agitation solution to the established option, exhibiting at least similar performance levels. In phase two potential possibilities to improve the overall design would be developed. This paper focuses on phase one and addresses the systematic approach applied by EKATO in characterizing the mixing processes. Mixing tasks were assessed individually applying basic theory and scale-up and -down rules to the individual tasks. Testing with model systems was done at the EKATO technology center in Schopfheim, Germany, on scales of 50 liters and 1 m³. The results showed that the ISOJET-B impeller design showed promising performance under BIOX® reactor conditions. Scale-up with the ISOJET-B was done in order to apply it in the 21 m³ live volume test reactor at Fairview mine in South Africa. At Fairview tests were performed using model systems and eventually under real plant conditions with BIOX® slurries. The results were a success and confirmed that the scale-up factors determined during the testing at EKATO?s technology center could be substantiated in the ?model scale? 25 m³ reactor. Testing under the actual process conditions showed that all design parameters were within the desired range to be considered an excellent leaching performance. This successful joint development shows the importance of a close cooperation of technology licensors or end-users and equipment suppliers. It is vital for understanding all factors influencing the mixing performance of processes. Exercises such as this will provide equipment suppliers and plant operators more confidence in managing further scale ups at ever larger engineered plants.

A Honeywell TDC 2000 central process control system was installed at Rössing in 1984. The system controls the metallurgical operations from crushing to the finished product of uranium oxide and manufacture of sulphuric acid. The operation was previously controlled from nine separate local control rooms. The paper briefly reviews the design and commissioning of the control system on an operating plant and discusses the impact on manpower organisation and training needs. Development of the process control system during its first two years of operation is reviewed and a summary is given of the current status of computer control at Rössing. The impact of the new system on overall plant operation and performance efficiency is also briefly described. In conclusion, future developments of computer control and overall optimisation of metallurgical operations are reviewed.

Mineral processing efficiency depends on various factors and among them includes head grade fluctuations feeding the processing plant. Head grades can fluctuate beyond an admissible range, implying in recovery decrease for the mineral of interest. Grades feeding the processing plant depend on the geological domain which is being mined and on the mining schedule. Therefore, it is necessary to keep grade variability controlled. Blending piles are an efficient alternative to reduce grade fluctuations. The main factors influencing blending efficiency are the pile size or its mass and the number of layers used to pile up. Large piles are more efficient to reduce variability, however, there are economical and operational limits associated with them. This study investigates a methodology to analyse the ideal pile size to reach an acceptable variability given the in situ grade fluctuations. Geostatistical simulations provide the means to assess grade variability using an optimized mining schedule. These block grades are used to simulate any given pile throughout the mine`s life. The methodology was illustrated using a case study to control coal ash content at a mine supplying ROM coal to a power plant. Keywords: homogenization, piles, geostatistical simulation.

Tati Nickel is currently operating a hydrometallurgical demonstration plant in Botswana, using the Activox® process developed by LionOre Technology to produce nickel cathode and a cobalt salt from a sulphide concentrate. Cobalt is extracted using Cyanex 272. This reagent also extracts all the iron, aluminium, copper, zinc, and manganese from the nickel stream. Versatic 10 carboxylic acid is then used as extractant to recover nickel from the stream, separating it from calcium and magnesium, and upgrading it to provide a suitable advance electrolyte for nickel electrowinning. However, the selectivity of Versatic 10 for nickel over calcium is limited, and gypsum formation in the extraction circuit is a problem when attempts are made to maximize the recovery of nickel. Mintek has developed a synergistic system with Versatic 10 for improved separation of nickel from calcium and magnesium. Laboratory testwork was conducted on the raffinate of the cobalt solvent extraction circuit to optimize the Versatic 10/Nicksyn? (Mintek synergist) system to be employed. Extraction and stripping parameters suitable for this stream were optimized in the laboratory and then applied on the demonstration plant. A commercial batch (0.5 tons) of Nicksyn? reagent was produced for the demonstration plant. The laboratory testwork results and the demonstration plant performance are discussed in detail in this paper.

Hydraulic fracturing technology is presented as a solution to improve permeability and thus solve the extraction problem of coal seam gas in low-permeability gas-bearing coal seams. Given an existing group of original cracks, the propagation of main hydraulic cracks and hydraulic wing cracks was simulated using realistic failure process analysis software. The process represents the structural transformation of hydraulic fracturing and permeability improvements caused by it. In addition, a field test for improving the permeability of gassy coal seams by hydraulic fracturing was also conducted. The propagation of the main cracks and wing cracks by hydraulic fracturing forms a network of original joint cracks, hydraulic wing cracks, and main hydraulic cracks, which improve the permeability of the coal seam. High-pressure water in the drill hole and in the main hydraulic cracks permeates the two flanks of the hole, forming the permeating water pressure. With an increase in drill water pressure and an extension of the main hydraulic cracks, the permeating water pressure on both sides of the main hydraulic cracks in the coal mass also increases. Hydraulic cracks tend to form connections through rock bridges. The extension of hydraulic wing cracks through connections in the rock bridges between the cracks transforms the rock mass to a fractured structure and improves its permeability. Hydraulic fracturing technology for improving permeability in underground conditions can increase the amount of gas drainage by a factor of 15. A stress relief area develops at a radial distance of 10-2.0 m from the hydraulic fracturing drill hole, while an area of rising stresses, called the pressurized area, develops a further 15 m away from the pressurized hole. Practice has proved the existence of the stress transfer phenomenon and the high stress area after fracturing. This kind of hydraulic fracturing technology is more effective in holes drilled from underground than in surface drill holes, with respect to costs and controllability, and is therefore the major trend in gas drainage development in coal mines.

Most coal plants must run under conditions of varying feed conditions or are asked to produce qualities different from that used in the design. This can cause overloaded conditions as the ?bottlenecks? within the plant, depending on plant operation or as the feed changes. During plant design, geological information can be used to determine washability envelopes and blends that may be expected. Historical data can also be used to develop a size distribution envelope as well as to assign reasonable models for each of the unit processes. In operation, a plant can be sampled to determine changes and to refine process models. The information obtained can then be used in an accurate simulation to define how the plant can deal with the changing environment. This paper uses Limn: The Flowsheet Processor to simulate the coal plant in detail and will produce an accurate model, in terms of equipment sizing as well as water, medium, and solids balance, for each change in feed condition. It will show examples of running the simulation through complete density and size ranges and will determine the equipment required to address each part of the performance envelope.

The new mineral royalty regime for South Africa was signed into law in November 2008, with its main objective being to compensate the State for the depletion of public minerals through a royalty charge payable from 1 March 2010. The aims of this paper are to establish the potential impact of mining royalties on State revenues, industry affordability, and explore whether the dual formula system is likely to encourage miners to become refiners. It also measures the royalty dispensation against economists? tax standards in an attempt to make a judgement on the ?equity? of the new system. This paper argues that most stakeholders should be comfortable with most of the requirements of the Act for most of the time. However, the new regime is unlikely to motivate miners to become refiners, as the benefit of the reduced rate on refined minerals appears to be insufficient to justify the additional costs to refine the mineral resource to the prescribed states of beneficiation.

COLLOQUIUM The President welcomed everyone present and mentioned that this was the first of the Colloquia which are to replace the Institute's monthly meetings. He stressed that discussion at Colloquia would be completely informal and would not be recorded unless the contributor requested publication. In conclusion, he thanked the organising committee, the authors and the contributors, and introduced the author of the first paper. The following papers were presented:- 'The future development of the Iron and Steel Industry' by J. P. Coetzee (Published in the Journal March 1971). Among those who contributed to the paper were Dr Bleloch, Dr K. Gebhard, Dr Way and Professor Müller. The main point made by Dr Bleloch related to the reserves of coking coal and of coal for power generation this in country and he deduced that in South Africa we are critically short of coking coal. On the basis that 4 million tons per year of coking coal are consumed for our present steel production, over 16 million tons would be required to meet the anticipated expansion in steel output by A.D. 2000. This must be set against the grim forecast made by the Coal Advisory Board in 1967 that our national reserves of coking coal will be exhausted before A.D. 2000. This gives tremendous significance to the development work presently being carried out by Iscor on alternative methods for coke production. On the other hand the blast furnace may have to be replaced by an alternative process for the reduction of iron ores, e.g., the use of rotary kilns followed by electric arc smelting. Dr Bleloch also expressed grave forebodings about the reserves of bituminous coal, pointing out that with present methods of mining the recoverable coal in any given reserve is in general only 50 per cent of that reserve. He stated that in the past seventy years great quantities of coal have been forever placed beyond the reach of mining by being undermined by extraction of lower seams or lost by being burned. A final point made by Dr Bleloch was the fast rise in the capital investment in a fully integrated steel plant, the figure having risen in the past decade from just over R200 to R350 per ton of finished steel per annum. Dr Gebhard spoke of the direct reduction processes for iron making pointing out the difficulties of securing a high percentage of reduction and the relatively high cost of smelting in electric arc furnaces. A principal requirement in the design of a backfill transportation pipeline is the accurate prediction of the values of key slurry flow parameters. Input variables, such as particle size and solids concentration, are usually determined by the load-bearing requirements of the placed fill. It is therefore necessary to identify the optimum conditions of transport for a particular combination of input variables. This paper critically reviews the methods available to predict the values of flow parameters in slurry pipeline systems in the light of experimental data generated at a test facility. Particular reference is made to rod milled waste and deslimed tailings transport systems and, in the case of the former, it is shown that both pumping and load-bearing requirements can be optimized.

"The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."

Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

A project was funded by the Australian coal industry to investigate the mechanisms that might lead to sample bias when using cross-belt cutters, in order to help coal industry personnel to make better decisions about the purchase, maintenance and operation. It concentrated on DEM modelling of skew cutters. These are set at an angle to the belt with the intention of minimizing disturbance to the non-sampled material. Two bias mechanisms are likely to cause bias for cross-belt cutters. Waves of material are bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters and material is thrown by the leading edges of cutter blades for all types of cross-belt cutters. These mechanisms cause some parts of the load of material on a belt to be over-represented. The effects of these mechanisms cannot be made to be negligible, so cross-belt samplers cannot be trusted to produce unbiased samples, especially for segregated streams of material. However, it is possible to give a bound on the maximum likely bias. The grades of two portions of the stream can be estimated by stopping the belt and shovelling off 1/3 of the cross-section of the load on the belt into a container, concentrating on the final side of the belt and the top of the load. The remaining material should be put into another container and the difference in grade determined. The maximum likely bias is typically about 10% of this difference. For a cross-belt cutter, having an extraction ratio near to 100% is not a reliable indication that the cutter has little or no bias. Some bias mechanisms affecting cross-belt sample cutters make sample mass too high and some make it too low, so an extraction ratio near 100% can occur if two bias mechanisms are both active. The electrical control of three-electrode submerged-arc furnaces suffers from a number of complexities, mostly due to the nature of the furnace electrical circuit providing power to the furnace where the three electrodes are interconnected within the furnace through the molten metal bath. This gives rise to what is known as the interaction effect 2, where variations in one electrode?s current can cause comparable changes to the currents in the other electrodes, particularly in larger furnaces with low power factor. Resistance-based control of the electrode penetration has largely alleviated these problems, since the resistance encountered by each electrode is predominantly dictated by the length and conductivity of the current path from the electrode?s tip to the molten metal bath, which acts as the three-phase circuit?s floating neutral point. Hence resistance changes due to tip position or conductivity changes beneath one electrode do not affect the resistances beneath the others, effectively decoupling the control of the individual electrodes1. Although resistance-based control is therefore generally accepted as superior to current-based control for the regulation of submerged-arc furnace electrode penetration, a few furnace operators still prefer to use current control under specific furnace conditions. This paper presents the results of analysing the performance of both current and resistance-based control in typical scenarios encountered on industrial furnaces, taking into account a number of factors including electrode penetration, power distribution, efficiency and asymmetry of the electrode currents. In order to accomplish this, three typically encountered scenarios were simulated. The results obtained show that resistance control provides more benefit in all cases, however, the uneven electrode current distribution generated by resistance control when electrodes are on top stops may cause some concern if baking of the electrodes is required in this scenario.

In 2002 the commissioning of an ilmenite smelter on the North Coast of South Africa was extended by three months due to the failure and subsequent replacement of the magnesia-based refractory lining. The lining failed due to the hydration of magnesia caused by an unexpected source of water. The incident resulted in significant financial losses and a prolonged insurance claim which was settled in 2009. As magnesia-based refractories are used extensively in both ferrous and non-ferrous applications, the authors of the paper want to share the experience gained from this incident with others. The paper reviews the literature available on furnace start-up practices and explains the hydration of magnesia using available sources. The incident is studied in more detail, both technically and economically, and the costs incurred are quantified in terms of the cost of the original lining. The paper concludes with lessons learned and recommendations made for future work. The intention of the paper is to stimulate open debate regarding best practices in preheating of furnaces lined primarily with magnesia. Keywords Commissioning, hydration, start-up, magnesia.

Abstract: In this paper both continuous and discontinuous modelling are utilised in order to analyze the stability of the Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. The large span cavern (62 m) was built for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, and is a unique case study because of the large amount of available input data, through a comprehensive pre-investigation, stress and deformation monitoring program before, during and after the excavation. Phase2, a two-dimensional non-linear finite element program, and the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) are used as representative tools for continuous and discontinuous modelling, respectively. The analysis results are compared and discussed taking the reliability of the models, time-consumption and costs into consideration. Some guidelines for the total modelling process, from field measurements to final results, are also presented. Zusammenfassung: In diesem Artikel werden sowohl kontinuierlich als auch diskontinuierlich Modellierung verwendet, um die Stabilität, der in den Berg gebauten Olympiahalle in Gjøvik zu analysieren. Die Olympiahalle wurde 1994 zu den Olympische Spielen in Lillehammer errichtet. Ihr Dach erstreckt sich über eine Breite von zweiundsechzig Meter. Für den Bau wurden umfangreiche Daten durch Voruntersuchungen, und Überwachung von Gebirgsspannungen und Deformationen bevor, während und nach Exkavation eingesammelt. Auf Grund dieser großen Datenmenge stellt die Olympiahalle ein herausragendes Beispiel für den Bau ähnlicher Projekte dar. Für die kontinuierlichen Modellierungen wurde „Phase2“, ein zwei-dimensionales, nicht lineares „endlich Element“ Rechnerprogramm angewandt. Die diskontinuierlichen Modellierungen erstellte man mit Hilfe von der „Diskontinuierliche Deformations Analyse“ (DDA). Die Analysenergebnisse sind mit Rücksicht auf die Zuverlässigkeit der Modelle, Zeitverbrauch und Kosten verglichen und diskutiert worden. Im Artikel werden Richtlinien für den Modellierungsprozess von Dateneinsammlung bis Schlussfolgerung gegeben. Résumé: Dans cet article la modélisation continue et discontinue sont utilisés pour analyser la stabilité de Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. Cette caverne de grande portée (62 m) a été construite pour les Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver de 1994 à Lillehammer, et est une étude de cas unique grâce à la grande quantité de données disponibles, de par un programme de pré-investigation compréhensive, monitorage des contraintes et déformations avant, pendant et après l'excavation. Phase2, un code d’éléments finis non linéaire à deux dimensions, et l’Analyse en Déformations Discontinues (DDA) sont utilisés comme outils représentatifs de la modélisation continue et discontinue, respectivement. Les résultats d'analyses sont comparés et sont discutés, prenant en compte la fiabilité des modèles, la consommation en temps de calcul et les coûts. Quelques indications pour le procédé total de modélisation, des mesures sur place aux résultats finaux, sont aussi présentées.

Labour-intensive narrow reef stoping, as traditionally practised in South African gold and platinum mines, is almost unique in the modern first-world mechanized mining environment. Shortcomings of the system include the ever increasing cost of labour, a cap on achievable productivity and a poor safety record, particularly in the field of rock-related accidents. In the absence of sustainable alternative technologies, the South African mining industry has spent millions of rands improving the present system, focusing on improving workplace safety. This paper details the changes to stope support at Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg operations, and the impact on rock-related safety performance. "Face mapping is a simple but invaluable means of geological and geotechnical data acquisition whereby intact rock properties, rock mass properties, discontinuity properties, and structural orientation can be assessed. Although traditionally done via direct contact with the mapping face through techniques such as line mapping or window mapping, remote face mapping using various digital techniques has become increasingly popular in recent years. Sishen is a large open pit mining operation requiring a comprehensive geotechnical data-set to evaluate pit wall design and stability with the necessary level of confidence. Geotechnical borehole data, face mapping data, geotechnical laboratory testing data, and implicit structural models provide the main sources of this information. Although a large geotechnical borehole database has always been maintained at the mine, face mapping has in the past been restricted to sporadic and isolated stability assessments. In 2013 the mine acquired a terrestrial laser scanner with the resolution, photographic capabilities, and software required to carry out geotechnical face mapping. A face mapping procedure was set up based on accepted face mapping methods, the data requirements of the mine, and capabilities of the laser scanner system. Mapping data obtained from the scans was integrated into the Acquire geological data management system, a purpose-designed structured query language (SQL) database system used for storing the mine’s geotechnical data. Within the geotechnical design process, having face mapping data available has improved confidence in the properties of the rock mass and structural environment, allowing for better definition of geotechnical design sectors. Overall, the face mapping and geotechnical analysis features of the terrestrial laser scanner in use make it an invaluable geotechnical data capture tool, provided a system is in place to store mapping data in a manner that allows for meaningful rock mass and structural information to be produced. IntroductionFundamental to the geotechnical design process is the acquisition of a reliable and complete geotechnical data-set. Geotechnical data acquisition will typically commence during the early stages of a project and continue well into the operational life of the mine, with the data confidence progressively increasing as the amount of data captured increases. Sishen mine currently bases all open pit geotechnical designs and geotechnical risk assessment on geotechnical borehole data in conjunction with interpreted structural models. Boreholes are logged and the data is captured in an ongoing process. This process forms the initial step in the geotechnical design and risk assessment process whereby the raw data is used to classify the strength properties for each lithology, provide inputs for geotechnical block models, and ultimately provide the inputs for slope design analyses. To date, borehole data has provided the only largescale, organized data-set for input into geotechnical analyses at Sishen. Although borehole data is the best and most comprehensive form of geotechnical data, there are some shortfalls that can be addressed by other data collection methods. The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.
