This paper describes the state of the art in backfilling techniques used on East Driefontein Gold Mine. Areas covered are the preparation plant, the distribution plant, the pipeline network and finally placement techniques. The in-situ performance of placed backfill has been assessed by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization, and results to date will be shared. Details of the backfill expansion programme that will enable this facility to be made available to all working places are included. Benefits obtained by the introduction of backfilling are described, together with certain management aspects to be considered in the control of quality and quantity of support supplied via a pipeline.

This paper presents a method that enables one to estimate the risk-adjusted discount rate. that should be used In project discounted cash-flow analysis. The risk-adjustment process is carried out via the capital asset pricing model of modern finance theory, in which the appropriate measure of risk is the beta coefficient of the project concerned. The resulting discount rate thus depends on the properties of the project Itself, and not on the nature or cost of the capital of the firm considering the investment.

A systematic approach to the analysis of alternative methods of ventilating and cooling large hot mines is presented. The important factors that have a bearing on ventilation and cooling requirements and practices, such as air flow through the mine, geographical distribution of eat loads, and micro-ventilation considerations, are dealt with. The analysis of these factors leads to definitive ventilation and cooling strategies, air and water process design, specifications of details, and designs of the associated plant and equipment.

(Queensland), Ph.D., (Fellow) The special characteristics of the autogenous mill are stated, and a suitable type of model for the mill is presented. Details of the test plant and experimental techniques for obtaining the data for model development are next given. followed by a discussion of the methods developed for the computation of the model parameters, namely the appearance matrix, the abrasion and crushing breakage-rate functions, and the discharge-rate function. Examples of results obtained with the model are given, and finally there is a brief account of confirmatory work on a fullscale autogeneous mill.

This. paper indicates how the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), as a major consumer of raw materials, determines the tonnage and quality of essential raw materials required to satisfy an increasing demand for steel and how this led to the establishment of a coal mine with a highly sophisticated beneficiation plant in the Waterberg coalfield, near Ellisras in the Transvaal. The planning of the project, with specific reference to the limited reserves of metallurgical coal in South Africa, the quality and quantity of the coal to be produced, and the way in which the project was managed is discussed briefly.

A new type of bit, that has been developed and is being evaluated, shows great potential in expanding the range of rock strength that can be cut by continuous miners and roadheaders. This new style of bit is called the frustum. The tools tested in this program were developed, manufactured and patented by Briese Industrial Technologies, Inc. The frustum derives its name from the unique geometric shape of the cutter, or cutting insert. The frustum shape cutting tool has previously been proven as an effective cutting tool for machining metals, metal matrix composites and polymers. The frustum rock bit has a very dense carbide frustum shape tip mounted on the end of a steel body similar to the conical bits typically used on continuous miners and roadheaders. In between the carbide frustum cutting tip and the steel body there can be a bearing that allows the frustum to rotate around the bit axis. When the bit is forced into the rock at a skewed angle, the frustum tip rotates as it travels. This rotation greatly reduces the cutting forces acting on the bit when compared to the current state of the art conical drag bits. This cutting force reduction, derived from the frustum’s cutting action, allows for much harder and more abrasive rock to be cut without quickly wearing out the bit. Full scale laboratory cutting tests have been performed with the frustum bit in direct comparison to the current state of the art conical bits. Field trials of the frustum bit are currently being planned. Test procedures, results and findings are presented.

The first Issue in this new series brings together a set of review articles by leading authorities in the field which, taken together, provide a thorough and detailed survey of many of the key topics of current concern relating to the environmental impact of mining. The level of treatment of most topics is at first introductory but evolves through to the advanced level of current research, backed up by extensive citations of relevant primary literature and other sources. Thus the Issue as a whole will be found equally valuable by students of environmental science and those actively engaged in research related to this theme.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sub-layer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

The report describes the Amuran project in the Welkom area, which is being conducted by six members of the Anglo American Group. The project comprises three plants for the flotation of pyrite, a twin-stream uranium plant in which 'high-grade' slimes and pyrite can be leached separately, a pyriteburning sulphuric acid plant, and a plant for the recovery of gold from calcines. Details of these plants including capital costs and estimated production are given. Mention is made of the adsorption of gold onto activated charcoal and wet high-intensity magnetic separation as possible suitable processes for these residues.

This paper examines the South African fiscal system as it applies to the mining industry and, where components are found wanting, discusses possible alternatives. It is concluded that the South African system has long provided a stable environment for mining investment and growth. However, the introduction, of steep surcharges during the past decade or so (since abolished) and ring fencing (since relaxed but not abolished) has started undermining this stability.

This paper outlines the tax provisions that became defective in January 1992, which allow a working mine to make tax-deductible contributions to a dedicated environmental body that is itself not subject to tax. Such a body will then provide a source of funding for the mine's future environmental expenditures. It is concluded that the establishment of such environmental bodies is a financially sound, tax-effective route, allowing mines, prospectors, and quarry operators to provide for future environmental rehabilitation.

This paper gives an account of the development of a plant for the differential flotation of mixed sulphide ore, special reference being made to the separation of copper and zinc sulphides. The uniqueness of the geology, mineralogy, and metallurgy of each complex ore-body is stressed. Consideration is given to the scale-up of laboratory data, and to some of the factors involved in the design of milling and flotation plants for this type of ore. Process control and development are discussed, as are the human requirements for the optimum operation of a concentrator.

Processing of copper-cobalt orebodies in Africa?s Copper Belt has received much recent attention with various flowsheet options being developed specifically for the refining of cobalt. The upfront leach and copper refining routes are well understood whereas the refining of cobalt is more complex, requiring numerous impurity removal steps to produce high purity metal. This paper describes an investigation into one of the possible processing steps in the refining of cobalt, namely, cobalt solvent extraction. The paper emphasizes the importance of upstream impurity removal to achieve the required cobalt solvent extraction feed composition. 18% (v/v) Cyanex 272 in an aliphatic diluent is used as the organic phase. The pH profiles in the various stages are evaluated in order to obtain a raffinate containing <10 mg/[l] cobalt and with a low magnesium content reporting to the stripping section. The pH profile is also used to minimize the impurity deportment to the cobalt electrolyte. The effect of adding a preneutralization stage before feeding the organic phase to the extraction circuit is investigated. Zinc build-up in the stripping stages is also looked at. It is recommended for the purpose of this study that four extraction stages at an O:A ratio of 1 with a pH profile from 4.9 to 5.7 be employed. The pH is controlled with 40 g/[l] NaOH. A preneutralization stage is required, where the organic phase is contacted with 10 M NaOH. Two scrubbing stages are recommended at an O:A ratio of 40, using the cobalt electrowinning advance electrolyte as the scrub liquor. Three strip stages are to be employed at an O:A ratio of 0.67.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. "Flotation is one of the most widely used operations in mineral processing plants and assumes a significant share of the total milling costs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new set of capital and operating cost models for major flotation machines based on the application of single (SRA) and multiple regression analysis (MRA). Thirty-seven major flotation machines were analysed for this purpose. Depending on the machinery type, different technical variables such as diameter, required air flow rate, required floor space, cell volume, required air pressure, and power were considered as predictor variables, individually (in SRA) or simultaneously (in MRA). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used in MRA due to the high correlation between predictive variables. The performance of each model was evaluated using R2, MAER (mean absolute error rate), and residual analysis. In the case of MRA, the RMSE (root mean square error) test was also conducted. Maximum obtained MAER of 13.5% and minimum R2 of 0.86 indicated that these models could be applied as credible tools in estimation of capital and operating costs of flotation machines for design and feasibility studies.IntroductionMineral processing is a vital part of mining projects and mainly involves comminution, sizing, concentration, extractive metallurgical processes, and dewatering. Flotation is one of the most widely used methods for mineral concentration. Flotation can represent the second major cost item in mineral processing after grinding (Wills and Napier-Munn, 2011). Accordingly, it is a main concern of mining project managers to select and optimize flotation circuits in order to decrease costs and increase productivity. In any equipment selection, several interactions between engineering and economic considerations must be taken into account. Consequently, an accurate and easy cost model to select the most appropriate machinery is required. Moreover, cost models could be used in flow sheet simulations applied in design and optimization. Models of unit operations built into the simulators could be improved by linking the equipment cost models (Khalesi et al., 2015)."
