The Past. In the past, large metallurgical companies (for example the mining houses) had the necessary infrastructure both to develop metallurgical flowsheets and to undertake the construction and project management of metallurgical plants. Effectively, the sole contribution by contracting companies was the supply, and possibly the installation, of specific items of equipment. OBITUARY: AUSTIN WHILLIER (1927 - 1981) On Thursday, 13th August, 1981, Dr. Austin Whillier passed away peacefully in Johannesburg after a long illness. This event has been a serious blow indeed, and its effects will be felt, not only by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa and the South African mining industry, but also throughout many scientific and technical spheres both in South Africa and further a field.

Historically, engineers and scientists, particularly those involved in the coal-mining industry, have been slow to adopt statistical methods. However, the need to obtain the maximum information .from expensive exploration and development programmes, and the current focus on total quality management, have led to a change in perceptions if classical statistical and geostatistical methods and their application as planning tools. Some if the underlying issues associated with the generally poor communications between statisticians and engineers/physical scientists, which contribute to some if the misconceptions relating to statistical methods, are discussed The potentially profitable application if a number if statistical techniques in the fields if geological evaluation and mine planning! development is also reviewed, with specific reference to the coal industry.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

THE BRITISH COUNCIL AWARDS 1971-1972 The British Council invites applications from permanent residents of the Republic of South Africa and South West Africa, for the following awards: SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships are available to such permanent residents who hold university degrees or comparable professional qualifications. The scholarships are tenable for postgraduate study at universities and other educational establishments in Britain for the academic year of approximately ten months beginning 1st October, 1971. BURSARIES Bursaries are available to such permanent residents who hold university degrees or who, being already established in their professions or trades, hold other qualifications. The bursaries are tenable at British educational institutions or other suitable establishments in Britain for a course of training, study or research lasting not less than two months or more than six. The British Council may, at its discretion, bear the cost of single or return fares to Britain. The closing date for applications is 31st July, 1970. TRAVEL GRANTS Travel grants each of £300 are available in respect of journeys to Britain undertaken between 1st April, 1971 and 31st March, 1972 and are provided to facilitate visits to British universities by persons holding staff appointments or graduate research posts at South African universities. Visits must normally be of at least six months duration. The closing date for applications is 31st October, 1970. THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE PROPERTIES OF LIQUID METALS Tokyo, September 1972 The Second International Conference on the Properties of Liquid Metals will be held under the auspices of The Japan Institute of Metals and The Physical Society of Japan from 3rd to 8th September, 1972 in Tokyo. The purpose of this conference is to continue and extend the efforts towards the objective of the First International Conference on the Properties of Liquid Metals at Brookhaven, 1966. The paper points out that bord-and-pillar mining is the most important method of coal extraction in South African underground coal mines, and advocates that pillar design procedures should be refined to make more rational allowance for the differences in strength properties between various coal seams and roof and floor strata. However, any deviations from well-established design procedures must be based on sound engineering principles and reliable data on the strength properties of the seams and strata concerned. Recent information indicates that practices for the protection of surface structures against underground mining should be revised.

This paper reviews some of the traditional methods of reserves estimation based on lognormal distribution with or without an additive constant. In the rush to computerize mine planning and grade control generaly, proven estimation methods, such as Sichel's t, seem to have been overlooked. By use of a personal microcomputer, the traditional methods were investigated thoroughly, the results being tested against existing tables and figures. The fitting of a lognormal distribution, including estimation of the additive constant, is discussed, and the calculation of Sichel's t estimator and its associated confidence limits is described in detail. Payability calculations for a lognormal distribution are also covered briefly. The advantages of personal computers, particularly speed and ease of use, are emphasized. This low-cost approach permits detailed investigation of some of the assumptions and approximations inherent in the established methods of calculation. Several disturbing discrepancies are revealed in various factors, and some generalized statements made by previous authors are found to be over-simplistic. Full details are given of acceptable approximations and computer algorithms, and concern is expressed over the possible loss of proven methods under the welter of new, sophisticated computer software.

The tenth international symposium on the application of computer methods in the mineral industry (APCOM) was held in Johannesburg in April; the first time it had taken place outside North America. In the technical sessions fifty-seven papers were presented, providing a review of current work and including some important original contributions. These papers and a full account of the discussion at the symposium will soon be published in a single volume. The Technical Programme The first session of the symposium included an opening address given by Mr J. W. Shilling, President of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, and a keynote address by Mr K. F. Lane of the Rio Tinto Corporation Limited. Mr Shilling spoke about the history of the South African mining industry and about some of the work of the Chamber of Mines. He stressed the importance of the symposium in familiarising those in mining with computer applications, and expressed his hope that it would stimulate and inspire scientists and engineers in the effort to develop safer and more economic methods of mining. Mr Lane, talking about economic and financial modelling, gave a fascinating account of the experience of RTZ over the last twelve years. This symposium, being held at The President Hotel, Johannesburg on 9th-11th September, 1969, is being jointly sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The South African Corrosion Council and the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association, and supported by the C.S.I.R. The three days of technical sessions, at which 350 delegates are expected, will include introductory films on the properties and uses of stainless steels, papers on corrosion problems and prevention, design and economics, welding and applications in industries of particular importance to South Africa. The programme includes four overseas guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields. This paper reviews lead as a commodity, starting with a brief historical outline and dealing with the various uses of lead in some detail. It then goes on to discuss some statistics in relation to the production and reserves of lead, before sketching its mode of occurence. The topics are approached in regard both to the world and to South Africa, with the emphasis on the later. The mining and concentration of lead at Black Mountain Mine at Aggeneys in the north-western Cape Province are detailed, before a general account is given of the smelting, hydrometalurgical extraction, and refining of lead, together with the processes used in these activities. The paper concludes with a discussion of safety and health in regard to lead and a brief look at the commodity's future.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

SYNOPSIS The theory of elasticity has been shown to provide a means of determining the stresses and displacements induced by mining in deep level hard rock mines. This theory has been incorporated into an electrical resistance analogue on which the plane of a reef or ore-body can be modelled to enable the rapid determination of stresses and displacements at points in the plane of the reef. This electrical analogue has been used to determine energy release rates caused by scattered mining, which, to some extent, is a measure of the degree of hangingwall fracture. A correlation between predicted energy release rates and actual underground conditions in stopes in the O.F.S. goldfields has been encouraging enough to define parameters on which future stoping layouts can be based. The use of the elastic theory through the analogue has been extended to the assessment of the influence of stoping operations on off-reef excavations. Underground conditions at damaged and undamaged areas have been compared with predicted elastic stresses at the positions under review, resulting in the derivation of design parameters for use in siting off-reef excavations in the prevailing geological conditions in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. The analogue has also been used to assess the vulnerability of certain un mined dykes to bursting. Correlations between stresses induced on dykes by stoping and dyke behaviour underground has enabled critical stress levels to be determined for several persistent dykes occurring in the O.F.S. and Klerksdorp goldfields. A number of long and short term planning projects at mines operating in the Anglo American Corporation and General Mining and Finance Groups are described, where the data derived from the electrical resistance analogue is processed by computer programmes and assessed on the strength of the design factors derived from the correlation of field work and the elastic theory.

A study was made of the smelting process in two experimental furnaces patterned on Iron Age furnaces excavated at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Johannesburg. In a number of smelting experiments, the influences of air supply, temperature, time of operation, fuel consumption, and other operational factors were investigated. Metallurgical and metallographic aspects of the furnace operation and smelting products are discussed, and the experiments are compared with similar research work conducted in Europe and Africa.

On 23rd October, 1969, 54 members of the Institute set out at an early hour from Rand Airport in two chartered Dakota aircraft for a visit to the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam site. The weather was at the start rather unpromising but after passing Bloemfontein the overcast cleared and it turned into a glorious day for a most memorable visit. The Institute is indebted to U.C-Dumez-Borie Dams Limited, the main civil engineering contractors, and Mr J. D. McNamara their executive manager, for the very excellent arrangements made for this excursion. From the time the aircraft landed till a slightly belated departure the organisation of the extensive tours arranged for the parties was quite outstanding and a matter for congratulation to all concerned. At each of the many places visited there was a senior official to give an authoritative and comprehensive description of the work under his control. In addition the guides on the buses, loaned by the Department of Water Affairs, kept up an interesting running commentary throughout the day. A further much appreciated facet was the introduction of many of the experts on the site and a brief talk by each after an excellent lunch served at the recreation club. Each visitor also received a brochure with a progress report and a detailed site plan, with various sections highlighted in colour, and obviously prepared at the cost of much time and effort. The visit included tours of the large dolerite quarry, where some 150 000 tons of rock are removed each month, the 42 in. gyratory primary crusher, the secondary crushing and screening plant, the rod mill plant for sand production, and the automated blending and concrete batching plant. The transport of mixed concrete by 'silobuses' to the 6 cu. yd buckets of four Blondin cableways, two of which are radially movable and two with buffing towers, and the placing of the concrete in the huge blocks of the wall was watched from a vantage point. The most interesting part of the visit was without a doubt the inspection of the wall itself and the explanations of the many intricasies of its design and care in construction, covering aspects such as positioning of galleys, interlocking of blocks, reinforcement, refrigeration, actual concrete placing, subsequent grouting, etc. Other points of interest were the very complicated design of the wall itself, the river diversion plans, with three stages of coffer dams, the spillways, and the very well cut penstock tunnels.

The Conference began with registration, followed by a well-attended cocktail party on the evening of Sunday 25th, where, in a convivial atmosphere, Dr Louw Alberts, President of Mintek, welcomed the delegates and wished them an enjoyable and informative week. The Conference was formally opened by the Minister Mineral and Energy Affairs, the Honourable Mr D. W. Steyn, at 9hOO on Monday. Sketching the history of Mintek and its predecessors, Minister Steyn described the objective and achievements of Mintek, as well as the background to mineral-processing research in South Africa and the policy of the South African government towards the development of the mineral industry.

The modeling of the uranium-leaching process, and the logging of data from a plant for the evaluation of the model, are reported. A phenomenological approach was adopted in the development of the model. A set of eight chemical reactions was chosen to represent the complex chemistry of the process, and kinetic expressions for these reactions were incorporated in differential equations representing mass and energy balances. These equations were coded in FORTRAN to form a program that simulated the process, and that allowed averaged and continuous data from the plant to be compared with the model. Difficulties with the screening of large volumes of pulp to remove plus 600 /km material before the adsorption circuit and to retain plus 20-mesh carbon in the adsorption contactors have largely been solved, with the result that the plant can now handle its design throughput. The elution and electrowinning processes have been modified to simplify the circuit, but the regeneration of carbon remains unsatisfactory. The production of fine carbon in the plant can lead to increased gold losses, and this carbon must be collected and treated. Collection methods for fine carbon and some indications of the quantity of the carbon and its gold values are given.

This paper, 'A review of the biological treatment of cyanide-bearing waste water' discusses the necessity for the treatment of cyanide-bearing waste water with a view to the avoidance of environmental pollution, and the limitations of the available chemical and physical processes are referred to briefly. The sources of cyanide-bearing waste waters are mentioned. The mechanisms of production and utilization of cyanide by fungi and bacteria are discussed. The work done in connection with the biological removal and destruction of cyanide is summarized, the successes achieved are described, and the relevant processes are listed. In conclusion, some advantages of biological processes for the removal of cyanide are mentioned.

For a number of years the steel tube and pipe industry has worked on resolving problems of product quality. These have largely been resolved and new products have been developed to take advantage of new developments. To fully coordinate market acceptance guidance on use of galvanized piping was also required. This was largely achieved locally in 2004 with the publication by the SABS of ARP 060 - Guidance on the use and application of hot dip galvanized steel piping for the transportation of potable water in South Africa. Use of this document is not easy however and a need to have a simple computer model to assist the specifier was identified. Working with a major tube and pipe manufacturer this is now being developed and this paper will provide the background to the model?s development and its intended use. There is still a need for a partner Code of Practice on the performance of galvanized piping in buried conditions and the need for this will be highlighted together with current available information.
