A good thing is becoming a bad thing. Rock mass classification systems, that are so excellent for communications between engineers and geologists, and that can be valuable in categorizing project experience, are emasculating engineering geology and rock mechanics. Some engineering geologists have been sucked into thinking that Q and RMR values are all that is needed for engineering purposes, and seem to have put aside what can be learned from structural geology and geomorphology. Many rock mechanics engineers seem to have forgotten the scientific method. This paper attempts to redress the situation by showing how mechanics can be used in rock engineering to design with a similar rigour to that used in the fields of structural engineering, hydraulics and soil mechanics. It also attempts to remind practitioners of what can be achieved by skilled engineering geology.

During the last 100 years, the submerged arc furnace has been one of the most amazing diversified melting units. These furnaces have found their application in more than 20 different main industrial areas such as iron, ferro alloy, chemical industry, lead, zinc, copper, refractory, titanium oxide, recycling, phosphorus etc. Such an evolution was only possible because of tremendous efforts in research and development and due to the large range of design solutions. The worldwide strong competition also forced the industry and plant suppliers to develop highly efficient, economically balanced units in optimized sizes and with long lifetimes, to adapt to the market conditions. Regarding the environment, the plants improved significantly in terms of water treatment plants and off-gas treatments as well as on site recycling units. This paper will give a short overview regarding the history of the furnace and the latest developments in today?s main application fields: ferro alloys, non-ferrous, special application and recycling. In addition new activities in research and developments are briefly discussed.

The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

'The deteriorating air quality and general degradation of the environments in industrialized and urban regions of South Africa have been of concern for more than a decade', says Mintek's Dr Johann Engelbrecht. 'The accompanying effect on health, visibility, and damage to property and the environment have prompted the public, authorities, and industry to take appropriate action. A recent study conducted by the Medical Research Council on schoolchildren in the Vaal Triangle, clearly demonstrated the relationship between the deficient quality of the air in that area, and the resultant respiratory diseases.

Selection of the most suitable roadheaders (boom type tunnelling machines) for the galleries/tunnels to be excavated in certain rock and under known project conditions is important for avoiding problems during application. This research utilized a multiple attribute decision-making method and studied how this will be applied for the selection of boom-type excavation machines. The Cayirhan Coal Basin was used for selecting roadheaders using the analytical hierarchy process, which is one of the multiple attribute decision-making methods. To conclude, this study reveals that decision-making methods can be used in the process of selecting roadheaders for the excavation of galleries. Slat-band chains, currently manufactured from Type 430 ferritic stainless steel, are used as conveyors in various industries. A process to strengthen these chains?with the aim of prolonging the lifetime of the conveyors?was developed recently. The process entails heat treating the cold-worked chain at 475°C,strengthening the material by precipitation of the Cr-rich phase a? at relatively long periods of aging. In the present work, it was found that increasing the interstitial content by solution heat treatments (at 880°C or 930°C) prior to cold rolling and aging, causes an increase in strength at shorter aging times as a result of the precipitation of chromium-rich carbides and nitrides. The solution treatments can introduce martensite into the microstructure if carried out at a sufficiently high temperature. This, along with the deformation caused by cold work, also increases the strength. Corrosion resistance is not affected by the treatments, but ductility is lowered. However, calculated critical crack lengths indicate that solution treatment at a temperature below the Ac1allows for a larger critical flaw size, and that the lifetime of the chains will probably be determined by fatigue. Although the duration of the service of the chains are reportedly controlled by wear, with these treatments the tensile strength of the material is increased to within acceptable limits for conveyor chains. The tensile strength is an indication of the wear or abrasion resistance of a material. It is expected that after the treatments, the wear resistance will be improved, but since embrittlement occurs, the fatigue resistance is lowered. It is concluded that the preferred processing route for the chains would be solution treatment at 880°C, fast quenching to trap the interstitial atoms, cold rolling and then aging at 475°C for 8 minutes.

Strategic and tactical planning are both required in the mining industry but have completely different objectives and require different environments. If these are not fully understood, then the best value for a mining operation may not be realized. This paper examines the differences in these approaches and how they interface in the mining environment. The objectives, content, skills required and the implied management issues for these two components are examined with the hope that this will assist management and the planning teams in defining their respective roles and expectations. The opinions are those of the author based on his experience on several mining operations and projects.

"‘Roof support awaiting time’ (RSAT) is a term used at Goedehoop Colliery’s Simunye Shaft to describe the potential production time lost due to the continuous miner (CM) standing idle waiting for roof support to catch up. Investigations revealed that in 2013, Simunye Shaft had approximately1400 hours of RSAT, which suggests that the mine could have potentially produced an additional 280 000 t of coal. This project consisted of two parts. Firstly, the causes of the high RSAT and means to improve the situation were investigated. Secondly, as insisted by mine management, the CM cutting sequence was investigated as a possible cause of high RSAT. Machine-related challenges due to the roofbolter installing support too slowly, geological conditions (mostly hard roof conditions and slips),logistical challenges pertaining to the CM cutting sequence, man-related challenges related to operator fatigue, re-support, operator inexperience, and the absence of support targets were identified as main contributors to RSAT. Furthermore, results showed that the roofbolters in the sections at Simunye Shaft are slower than the CMs. A target of 28% reduction in RSAT was set. Experts from Kennametal and Fletcher were consulted to find solutions for the identified causes. In total, eight solutions for RSAT were identified, but the solution that contributed most significantly to reducing RSAT was to use hard roof drill bits as a standard product at Simunye Shaft. Calculations showed that by using hard roof drill bits, RSAT can be reduced by 43%, which is more than the specified 28% target. The cutting sequences at Kriel, Greenside, and Simunye Shaft, togetherwith three newly developed cutting sequences, were simulated using the UCMS (Underground Coal Mining Simulation) program. A re-aligningprinciple was incorporated into the newly developed cutting sequences toalign the cutting sequences to general support work and to reduce RSAT. A decision matrix revealed that a cutting sequence in which boxing takesplace in R3 (third road to the right of the belt road) and in which the re-aligning principle has been incorporated will be the best option for Simunye Shaft. The recommended cutting sequence will lead to a 5% increase in production.The work presented in this paper was carried out as partial fullfilment for the degree BEng (Mining Engineering)"

In 1963, the full-scale engineering study for the development of an iron, steel, and vanadium plant was initiated. This was the birth of Evraz Highveld and its process flow as it is known today. Highveld started out as a steelworks that produced steel and vanadium-bearing slag from a titaniferous magnetite iron ore mined from its own mine site near Steelpoort. The process utilized co-current rotary kilns for prereduction, and submerged-arc furnaces for the production of pig iron with approximately 1.15% vanadium. Because of various technical challenges that the submerged-arc furnaces experienced over the years, a decision was taken in 2004 to convert the furnaces to open slag bath (OSB) operation, in order to enable the maximum production of iron and vanadium while improving the control over operational parameters. The conversion proved to be highly successful and, since 2005, three furnaces have been converted to OSB operation. The fourth furnace will be converted in the first half of 2011. The conversion to OSB furnaces not only yields higher vanadium recovery to the metal at the iron plant, but also improves the overall throughput of the steel plant. This is the result of the higher carbon content of the liquid iron from the OSB furnaces, eliminating the need for anthracite addition to the shaking ladle process. This reduces the blowing time by approximately 60%. The conversion of the furnaces to OSB configuration is seen as an enabling technology change and a prerequisite to the implementation of other plant improvements that are envisaged. The long-term vision of EHSV is to convert five furnaces to OSB mode, and permanently decommission the two remaining submerged-arc furnaces. This will allow EHSV to maintain current steel and vanadium production but at a significantly improved overall efficiency.

ABSTRACT – This paper investigates the possibility of interpreting the shear band evolution in hard soils and soft rocks as the result of shear propagation from pre-existing natural defects. Thesis done through the application of the principles of Fracture Mechanics, a Slip-Weakening Model(SWM) being used to simulate the non-linear zone at the tips of the discontinuity. Experimental observations have been carried out on prismatic samples of Beaucaire marl through biaxial compression tests in plane strain conditions. A numerical simulation confirms the validity of the proposed approach. RÉSUMÉ – Cet article présente la possibilité d’interpréter l’évolution des bandes de cisaillement dans les roches tendres et les sols raides comme le résultat de la propagation pour cisaillement à partir d’un défaut préexistant. Le Slip-Weakening Model (SWM) a été employé pour modéliser la zone non linéaire a l’extrémité d’une discontinuité. Nous présentons des observations expérimentaux obtenues à travers des essais de compression en déformation plane sur des échantillons prismatiques de marne. La simulation numérique d’un essai confirme la validité de la méthode proposée. KURZFASSUNG – Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht die Ausbreitung von Scherzonen in(bindigen) Böden und im Lockergestein anhand der Entwicklung von Scherrissen ausgehend vonexistierenden Schwachstellen zu erklären. Die Umsetzung erfolgte mit Hilfe der Bruchmechanik,für die Modellierung der nichtlinearen Zone an den Rissenden wurde ein Slip-Weakening-Modell(SWM) eingesetzt. Es wurden zweiaxiale Druckversuche an prismatischen Probekörpern vonBeaucaire Mergel unter der Bedingung eines ebenen Verzerrungszustandes durchgeführt. Dienumerische Untersuchungen bestätigten die Annahmen der untersuchten Theorie.

The proposed Gautrain Rapid Rail Link (GRRL) will require approximately 15 km of double or twin high-speed rail track tunnels located for the greater part beneath the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, including Houghton, Rosebank and Sandton. During the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) it became clear that potential surface vibration above and in the vicinity of the tunnels was a matter of serious concern to the residents of the affected properties and that the impact required assessment. The general method proposed is based on a US Department of Transportation, 1998, publication in which abase vibration curve derived for typical high-speed passenger trains is adjusted for the topological, geological and other features to predict the surface vibration and the associated ground-borne noise. The predictions indicate that some isolated areas might be impacted but that the impact will likely be limited, and it is possible to mitigate the impact using suitable track construction methods and track support systems.

"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. One of the seminal pioneering papers in reserve evaluation was published by Danie Krige in 1951. In that paper he introduced the concept of regression techniques in providing better estimates for stope grades and correcting for what later became known as the ‘conditional bias’. In South Africa, the development of this approach led to the phenomenon being dubbed the ‘regression effect’, and regression techniques ultimately formed the basis of simple kriging in Krige’s later papers. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Georges Matheron (1965) formulated the general theory of ‘regionalized variables’ and included copious discussion on what he termed the ‘volume-variance’ effect. Matheron defined mathematically the reason for, and quantification of, the difference in variability between estimated values and the actual unknown values. In 1983, this author published a paper that combined these two philosophies so that the ‘regression effect’ could be quantified before actual mining block values were available. In 1996 and in some earlier presentations, Krige revisited the regression effect in terms of the conditional bias and suggested two measures that might enable a practitioner of geostatistics to assess the ‘efficiency’ of the kriging estimator in any particular case. In this article, we revisit the trail from ‘regression effect’ to ‘kriging efficiency’ in conceptual terms and endeavour to explain exactly what is measured by these parameters and how to use (or abuse) them in practical cases.

CaF2is often used as a fluoride addition to the chloride salt flux in the melting of aluminium scrap. The solubility of CaF2in the chloride salt system is limited. Dissolved CaF2is considered to improve the properties of salt fluxes. Experimental investigations indicated that the solubility ofCaF2in 70 wt % NaCl/30 wt % KCl, German salt flux used in aluminium scrap melting, might be lower than expected according to literature data. The pseudo binary section CaF2-(70 wt % NaCl-30 wt % KCl) was investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). The determined solubility of CaF2appeared to be considerably lower than presented in the literature. The pseudo binary section calculated using thermodynamic data partially confirmed the results. DTA allowed us alsoto determine the crystallization temperature interval of the two phase eutectic consisting of the solid solution NaCl-KCl and CaF2. "Continuous mining systems containing multiple excavators producing multiple products of raw materials are highly complex, exhibiting strong interdependency between constituents. Furthermore, random variables govern the system, which causes uncertainty in the supply of raw materials: uncertainty in knowledge about the reserve, the quantity demanded by the customers, and the breakdown of equipment. This paper presents a stochastic-based mine process simulator capturing different sources of uncertainties. It aims to quantify the effect of geological uncertainty and its impacts on the ability to deliver contractually defined quantities and qualities of coal, and on the system efficiency in terms of utilization of major equipment. Two different areas of research are combined: geostatistical simulation for capturing geological uncertainty, and stochastic process simulation to predict the performance and reliability of a large continuous mining system.The process of modelling and simulation in this specific production environment is discussed in detail. Problem specification and a new integrated simulation approach are presented. A case study in a large coal mine is used to demonstrate the impacts and evaluate the results in terms of reaching optimal production control decisions to increase average equipment utilization and control coal quality and quantity. The beneficiation of fine iron ore will increase in importance in the future because most new iron ore resources will be in the form of lower grade ore deposits that will require liberation of iron ore minerals at finer sizes. Generally this fine iron ore will be beneficiated to produce a pelletizing concentrate with very strict chemical and physical specifications. In addition, because of the increasing demand for iron ore there are now more opportunities to produce by-product iron ore from mining operations producing other commodities. In the past the associated iron ore minerals would report to final tailings but now there is potential value to be realised from by-product revenue. These by-product iron ore opportunities are almost all centred on producing pelletizing concentrate. Currently pelletizing concentrates are produced mainly by various combinations of flotation and magnetic separation. The selection of the beneficiation route will depend on ore mineralogy and considerations around plant capacity and final concentrate quality. The main economic iron minerals are magnetic, haematite being paramagnetic and magnetite being ferromagnetic. This, therefore, means that magnetic separation can be applied, in principle, to all fine iron-ore beneficiation plants. While flotation has a considerable capacity advantage over magnetic separation, the real advantage of magnetic separation over flotation in fine iron-ore beneficiation is that treatment of -10 µm iron ore is possible-in flotation, the feed is deslimed at 10 µm and the -10 µm stream is considered to be final tailings, even though there is often a significant amount of contained iron ore. This paper describes a study around the recovery of fine magnetite in the form of a pelletizing concentrate. The study is based on an evaluation of an iron ore by-product opportunity from an iron oxide copper-gold (IOCG) deposit. Experiments were conducted to quantify the differences in magnetic separation performance with decrease in particle size treated. A mineralogical evaluation of all the test work products was undertaken to facilitate the interpretation of the test work results. These results were then used to propose an economically viable flowsheet for maximizing fine magnetite recovery using magnetic separation.

Interest in the potential use of high-density, thickened tailings has recently increased significantly. Reasons for considering this new technology vary across projects, but commonly include the need to conserve water, perceived lower risk of catastrophic failure, potential easier closure, or even reduced overall costs. As with any new technology, there has been some tendency to overstate its potential benefits. This paper reflects on whether or not the potential benefits that have been attributed to paste and thickened tailings have been realized. Using a grading system, thirteen benefits that were ascribed to the new technology some years ago are evaluated. Data is taken from case studies, and it is suggested that the key proven benefits appear to be reduced operating costs in some cases, reduced wall-building costs, and reductions in water consumption. One key potential benefit that has not been universally achieved is a reduction in the footprint of the tailings facility. Reports in the literature highlight the sometimes confusing nature of trade-off studies. Unless full life-of-mine costs are considered, these studies can be misleading and incorrect. The need to establish a consistent basis for comparative studies is discussed.
