Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

To reduce the frequency of mining incidents and improve safety and production efficiency, it is important to develop technology for the autonomous positioning and navigation of mining equipment, without the assistance of satellite navigation signals. In this study we review the current technological environment for positioning and navigation underground and present several integrated navigation strategies. Existing underground positioning and navigation technology is described, and the performances of different methods based on this technology analysed and compared. The combination types and positioning effects of underground positioning and navigation strategies are discussed. Recent research directions for filtering methods and positioning estimation algorithms for underground positioning and navigation are reviewed. Finally, we summarize the future direction of underground positioning and navigation technology and related algorithms.

A copper-gold project has required a number of trade-off studies underpinned by test work to settle on pragmatic flowsheets and throughputs to support a pre-feasibility study that provides a compelling financial case. The primary trade-off studies were based on the mine schedule, ore type feed-grade recovery relationships, likely concentrate grades and typical marketing terms as well as the estimated capital and operating costs for a range of throughputs and mining strategies. Secondary trade-off studies were conducted for specific circuits and additional processing options. Although the details of these studies are not presented, the technical options and subsequent flowsheets are discussed. While the flowsheets will be optimised during the feasibility study stage, the basis is now fixed for the four ore types that would be mined from the copper-gold orebody. The ore types, resulting from a strong weathering profile, exhibit a wide range of copper mineralisation and gold associations, as well as gangue types. They display a range of characteristics that necessitated a nuanced approach to flowsheet development. The primary separation techniques that have been employed include gravity, classification, flotation and leaching while a range of comminution methods have been selected to suit the properties of the ore types. While technical issues are important factors in terms of maximising the quality of separations, recoveries and revenues, attention to material handling, equipment characteristics, the mine schedule, and capital and operating costs are equally important considerations for settling upon a suitable and robust flowsheet. The fourth Teetered Bed Separator (TBS) has just been installed in Australia, and trials have been run in many sites. There is a growing recognition of the potential advantages of using TBS technology to treat coal in the ?3+0.25 mm size range, at cut points below 1.60. From these activities, there has been a substantial growth in knowledge with respect to application engineering and operational functions. The paper briefly describes the installations, including flowsheets, and so provides a background to the potential deployment of TBS technology. There are a large number of potential applications for TBS technology, including treatment of fine ROM coal in new plants, or in upgrade situations for re-processing of spiral product, or scavenging coal from coarse tailings. As well, cost effective capacity upgrades are possible by using TBS units for treating the sands size fraction. Issues arising from Australian TBS installations and application engineering are also discussed.

Mining projects are capital-intensive and are also characterized by high technical and economic risks. These factors pose challenges to mining entrepreneurs when they seek to raise seed capital for mining start-ups. There are limited sources of mining investment funds in South Africa and each has shortcomings due to one reason or another. Another impediment is South Africa?s status as a developing economy, in which the standards of living ? which in turn influences the savings culture ? the limited GDPs and budget, the socio-political environment, and banking, mining, treasury and other regulations, determine the size of investments, particularly in mining ventures. The proposed funding mechanism was developed with the aim of filling the gaps identified in existing funding mechanisms that were developed by the government with the introduction of the Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), 2002. The shortcomings identified were presented to the study participants as questions to obtain views that were used to define innovative ways of raising mining start-up capital. Most participants in the study supported the derived hypotheses and proposals, and these were used to refine the proposed mechanism for mining investment in South Africa. The proposed funding framework is aimed at encouraging interaction between mining entrepreneurs, government, and the investors to align goals and expectations when undertaking a mining investment.

Due to the modernisation of mines, traditional training methods may be supplemented to support the upskilling of supervisors in mines. A project was initiated by the SAMERDI SATCAP programme to demonstrate the “art of possibility” through a modern training methodology. Two exemplar digital supervisory leadership development modules for underground gold and platinum-group metal conventional and modernising mines, were developed for potential uptake by the mining industry. These exemplar modules were exhibited on a digital platform, towards leading and driving mining modernisation. The research adopted a mixed method approach that included a literature review, a review of an existing supervisory leadership development programme, data gathering, a pilot study, and stakeholder validation workshops. The research supported the development of exemplar digitised modules. The two digitised modules were showcased to the industry for potential adoption. Training slides, a facilitator guide, and a training video were developed for ease of use by industry. The training modules are generic and not specific to a particular mine. They may be used by multi-commodity mines, including gold and platinum-group metals, as ‘stand-alone’ modules. They are customisable, through consultation with relevant service providers for specific working environments. The findings indicated that both the traditional classroom training and the new digitised online learning solution offer advantages for supervisory leadership development. Digital learning is not a new concept for supervisors at mines and modern training methods are well-supported by supervisors in the industry. A ‘modernised’ training solution may consider a ‘blended’ learning approach that combines traditional training with digital methods.

Mine stope is typically backfilled with cemented paste backfill, which provides a regional underground stability and also a reduction of aboveground tailings accumulation. During backfilling, a phenomenon known as arching occurs and affects the stress distribution of the cemented paste backfill. The change in temperature due to uncontrolled heat transfer from the surrounding rock mass and/or generation from hydration process complicates the stress distribution development of cemented paste backfill. This paper presents results of the investigation on the effects of hydration to cemented paste backfill behaviour when backfilled into a narrow wall model using uncemented paste backfill as controlled sample. The parameters considered include backfill type (cemented paste backfill vs uncemented paste backfill), curing temperature (30°C–60°C), and stress evolution during pouring, consolidation, and curing stages. Results show that uncemented paste backfill re-establishes arching effects more readily, with lower peak stresses and greater stress relaxation than cemented paste backfill, of which its behaviour is significantly influenced by hydration under elevated temperatures. The main outcome of this work is that hydration critically controls the stress-temperature response of cemented paste backfill, and the balance between hydration-driven strength gain and stress relaxation can be leveraged to optimise backfill mix design for safer and more efficient stope filling.

From 2022 to 2040, the global demand for mineral commodities is projected to increase by fourfold to six-fold, largely due to traditional drivers such as population growth and urbanisation compounded by the adoption of decarbonisation technologies that are more mineral intensive than fossil fuel technologies. To meet this projected demand, companies operating in the minerals industry should accelerate the development of mineral projects. Since most of the companies generally operate in multiple geographical, regulatory or legislative jurisdictions, it is critical that the information on Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves they report on in the public domain should be comparable and consistent across different jurisdictions. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards fosters alignment of national and regional mineral reporting codes through an internationally accepted template that creates common technical understanding of definitions, classification, estimation processes and the Public Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves. The Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards Template-based codes guide reporting at respective national and regional levels. Since mine planning is critical in the conversion of mineral resources to mineral reserves, a shared technical understanding should aid comparability of mine planning results. However, differences persist in the way mine planning results are reported. Unlike most previous studies, which have primarily focused on comparing mineral reporting codes, this paper updates and extends such comparisons by exploring how similarities or differences in reporting should influence the mine planning process. It also recommends some principle and process changes to assist mine planning professionals to improve consistency and comparability in reporting mine planning results.

The study was intent on assessing the socio-economic impact of a zinc mine in South Africa through the application of people-centric digital tools using a case study research methodology. The global mining industry is undergoing significant technological shifts to modernize, improve operational sustainability, and align with the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) agenda. While the case study mine is a more modernized mine, continuous improvement around the ‘social’ pillar becomes critical, and to this end application of people-centered digital tools presented as the vehicle to understand community needs and impacts. Despite considerable annual corporate social investment by mines annually, the overall impact or social return on investment is marginally understood. Towards contributing to addressing this gap, digital ESG ‘social-related’ data gathering tools for mines decision-making were developed, including the training-needs assessment tool, community-social needs assessment, small, micro, and medium enterprise (SMME) communications and engagement tool, digital leadership competencies gap assessment tool, and change management blueprint, which further allowed for customization to the mining context. Hence, the novelty of this paper relates to applying digital tools to provide real-time information of the needs of a community, both socially and economically. The findings suggested that these digital tools enabled gathering of information for the establishment of regional and operational baselines towards enabling of social investment returns in relation to socio-economic transformation development interventions. These tools have been applied to a zinc mine context, with lessons and experiences obtained through this study, invaluable to the application of these digital tool in other mines in South Africa. The study was conducted in September 2023 across five host communities, surrounding the zinc mine, in the Northern Cape region, with 120 participants involved in the application of three relevant community-related digital tools, which included the training needs, community-social needs, and SMME communications and engagement tools. It was evident that the digital ESG tools could be used for data gathering for the mine’s informed decision-making and allowed for securing of insights on community needs in near real-time, and further proved practical for community use.

The two components of pillar design formula being used in South Africa are pillar strength and pillar load. While considerable effort has been directed to the determination of pillar strength, the other half of the safety factor equation, the load, has not received the same amount of attention. The load acting on pillars has always been calculated using the Tributary Area Theory (TAT). This paper summarises the recent studies on coal pillar loading using various numerical models. It concludes that although there are meaningful differences under certain circumstances, there is still a compelling argument to use the TAT in coal pillar design. Les deux parties composantes de la formule de conception de pilier généralement utilisée en Afrique du Sud sont la résistance de pilier et la charge de pilier. Tandis que des efforts considérables on été dirigés vers la détermination de la résistance de pilier, l’autre moitié du facteur de sécurité n’a pas reçu la même attention. La charge agissant sur les piliers a toujours été calculée avec la Théorie d’Aire Tributaire (TAT). L’étude présente résume les études récentes sur la charge de pilier de charbon utilisant des modèles numériques variés. La conclusion est que bien qu’il y ait des différences significatives selon les circonstances, il y a toujours un argument puissant pour utiliser le TAT dans la conception de pilier de charbon. Die in Südafrika für die Auslegung von Pfeilern verwendeten zwei Formelkomponenten sind Pfeilerstärke und Pfeilerbelastung. Während beträchtlicher Aufwand zur Bestimmung der Pfeilerstärke gemacht wurde, wurde der anderen Hälfte der Sicherheitsfaktorsgleichung nicht die gleiche Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Die auf die Pfeiler wirkende Last wurde immer unter Verwendung der Tributary Area Theory (TAT) berechnet. Diese Arbeit fast neuere Studien betreffend der Belastung von Kohlepfeilern unter Verwendung verschiedener numerischer Modelle zusammen. Die Schlussfolderung ist, daß obwohl unter bestimmten Vorraussetzungen bedeutende Unterschiede existieren, nach wie vor ein bezwingendes Argument besteht TAT in der Kohlepfeilerauslegung zu verwenden.

One understudied area of environmental law is the socio-ecological impact of ownerless mines. This impact is particularly pronounced in resource-dependent regions like South Africa and Western Australia, creating significant rehabilitation challenges. This article hypothesises that effectively managed financial provision could be valuable for rehabilitating legacy mines. Using a qualitative, comparative methodology, the article analyses the financial provisions for mine rehabilitation in South Africa and Western Australia, focusing on statutory provisions, funding mechanisms, and rehabilitation outcomes. Key themes, such as context, measures, and outcomes, are explored to assess the effectiveness of each financial model. Purposive sampling is used to select case studies from both regions, and thematic analysis is applied to interpret the data. The analysis highlights the financial rehabilitation measures in both regions, providing a structured framework for ownerless mine rehabilitation. South Africa's approach, guided by the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) of 2002, depends on state budget allocations, leading to funding inconsistencies and slow rehabilitation progress. In contrast, Western Australia’s Mine Rehabilitation Fund Act (MRFA) of 2012 uses a levy-based system, ensuring continuous financial support for mine rehabilitation. South Africa's state-dependent model has led to delays in rehabilitating derelict and ownerless mines, while Western Australia’s funding model has facilitated steady progress. The article recommends that South Africa adopt a levy-based financial mechanism, strengthen legislative enforcement, improve financial oversight, and integrate proactive mine closure strategies to accelerate rehabilitation, reduce environmental hazards, and promote sustainable development in mining-affected communities.

The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. Metal powder compaction offers unique advantages in the manufacture of net-shape components using techniques such as laser sintering, conventional press and sintering, metal injection moulding, direct rolling, direct forging, and hot isostatic pressing. If the output from the primary metal production process is in powder form, then considerable cost and energy savings can be realized by direct conversion to semi-finished or final shapes. This possibility exists for titanium and possibly also for Ta, Zr, Hf, and Nb metals. However, these attractive benefits are associated with some significant risks. The high surface-to-volume ratio of powder particles coupled with the reactive nature of these metals means that special care must be taken when handling them. Powder explosions are unfortunately still a regular occurrence internationally and these often result in serious injury and loss of life. Even seemingly 'safe' compounds such as sugar, flour, and grain can be extremely hazardous when handled or milled and dust clouds are produced. In addition, exposure to airborne particles can have adverse effects on the human body, especially when particles are inhaled on a regular basis. Furthermore, the medical consequences of these are not fully understood, especially in the case of nanoparticles. The impact is often not observed immediately and debilitating illnesses may emerge only years or decades later. As far as is known, there are no South African guidelines for handling of metal powders. This paper attempts to provide an awareness of the risks associated with metal powders (including those produced indirectly by other metalworking/finishing operations) as well as some guidelines for their safe handling, based on international best practices.

Mineralogy, traditionally associated with concentrator studies, is being increasingly applied to problems in pyrometallurgy. Such investigations commonly make use of a number of techniques, and the results are combined for a meaningful interpretation, which can lead to a successful solution for the problem. Mineralogical techniques are described for various pyrometallurgical operations. Examples are given of studies and investigations involving mineralogy in chemical-looping combustion, feed monitoring to platinum-smelting furnaces, and losses to slag in base metal and platinum smelting.

During research on mainly the weathering of kimberlite, it became evident that its mineralogical composition is an important factor in the complex process of physical and chemical disintegration. The mineralogy of tuffisitic kimberlite breccias from two localities, the Cullinan and Venetia mines, is compared with special reference to the occurrence of associated clay minerals. The clay mineral composition influences the engineering properties of these rock types. It is illustrated how the presence of swelling clay components can be confirmed by ethylene glycol treatment and chlorite minerals by heat treatment using X-ray diffraction. Smectites are present in both tuffisitic kimberlites, dominant at Venetia while chlorite is more frequent at Cullinan. More tuffisitic kimberlite breccias samples from venetia were also characterized. It was found that kimberlite disintegration is correlated with the presence and abundance of smectite.

This paper deals with the selection of alternative accesses to a podiform chromite orebody in Turkey. The most important alternatives studied in a related project have been stated as a new vertical shaft and a ramp system. The comparison of these alternatives have been carried out on the basis of total investment costs, ore transport unit cost and net present value (NPV) of overall project for various depth. The results show that up to the depth of 700 m, the total investment cost and NPV favours the ramp access while unit ore transport cost make the shaft access preferable.

"SynopsisA number of important areas in nuclear fuel cycle, at both the front end and back end, offer ideal opportunities for the application of non-destructive evaluation techniques. These techniques do not only provide opportunities for non-invasive testing of e.g. irradiated materials, but also play an important role in the development of new materials in the nuclear sector. The advantage of penetrating radiation used as probe in the investigation and testing of nuclear materials makes X-ray and neutron radiography (2D) and tomography (3D) suitable for various applications in the total nuclear fuel cycle. The unique and different interaction modes of the two radiation probes with materials provide several opportunities. Their complementary nature and non-destructive character makes them most suitable for nuclear material analyses, analytical method development, and the evaluation of the performance of existing nuclear material compositions. This article gives an overview of the X-ray and neutron radiography/tomography applications in the field of nuclear material testing, and highlights a few of the success stories. Several selected areas of application in the nuclear fuel cycle are discussed to illustrate the complementary nature of these techniques as applied to nuclear materials.IntroductionDuring the development of new materials for the nuclear industry, materials testing and characterization are of the outmost importance to maintain safety standards and reliability. No compromise on safety in the workplace in any area within the total nuclear fuel cycle can be tolerated, and therefore most in-situ material characterization and testing is conducted by certified and qualified personnel schooled in destructive and non-destructive testing (DT and NDT) methods. It is estimated that approximately 65% of the roughly 130 million carats of diamonds mined globally per annum originate in Africa and has an annual value of US$ 8.4 billion', Many of these mines are located in remote areas of the continent where the directly affected project community's income is often well below the poverty line. Often associated with these communities are occurrences of localized over exploitation of natural resources, environmental destruction and the abundance of social ills.

One of the most challenging aspects in semi-mobile in-pit crushing and conveying (SMIPCC) system design is determining the optimum depth at which to change from a purely truck-based haulage system to a conveyor-based haulage system. We used scenario analysis to determine the optimum transition depth between a truck and shovel (TS) system and a SMIPCC system. Traditional pit-limit algorithms were used to generate the final pit limit on a copper deposit, which was then divided into four pushbacks. The final operating pushbacks (phases) were designed for both TS and SMIPCC. The end depths for each phase are viewed as candidate transition points to switch from the TS to SMIPCC haulage system. Economic calculations were applied for five different scenarios, including adopting SMIPCC from the outset (pure SMIPCC), after the first, second, and third phases, and finally not using the SMIPCC system (pure TS) at all. The analysis indicates that the second scenario, at a depth of 335 m, results in the lowest cumulative discounted cost (CDC). In this case, the CDC is 17.6% lower than that for the pure TS scenario and 10.7% lower than for the pure SMIPCC system scenario.
