A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise-induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise- induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise-induced hearing loss. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard SecoS215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock debris, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via an exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

Keywords: co-generation, furnace CO-gas cleaning, disintegrator scrubber, Theisen In a closed, electric, reduction furnace, no oxygen enters the furnace from the surrounding environment. The off-gases are thus not ?burnt? and therefore contain a considerable amount of CO and H2. Traditionally these gases have been captured and burnt in a flare stack. Recent developments have led operators of such furnaces to revise this strategy and to consider utilising these gases as a fuel for gas-fired generator sets to produce electricity, thus becoming more energy efficient. On 31 March 2010 the new emission standards, in accordance with the Air Quality Act, Act 39 of 2004, were promulgated. The minimum emission standards according to the act require that the particulate matter emissions from the primary fume-capture systems on closed furnaces for ?new plants? in ferroalloy and calcium carbide production not exceed 50 mg/Nm³ and 25 mg/Nm³, respectively. By implementing co-generation, the producer automatically complies with the new environmental emission standards for an off-gas. As much as 30% of the electrical power cost, which is set to double in the near future, can be saved by partly generating one?s own electrical power. In December 2010, the National Treasury published a discussion paper for public comment, one entitled ?Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: The carbon tax option?. Irrespective of how the tax is finally implemented, it will result in an increase of production costs in affected industries. This paper focuses on the characteristics of a furnace-off-gas cleaning system for closed ferroalloy smelters, characteristics that meet the requirements of both reducing solid-matter emissions and operating a safe and reliable gas plant.

Publications on hard rock tunnel support design in the South African mining industry have originated primarily from the goldmines during the past 50 years. Little has been published to date on the platinum and chrome mines of the Bushveld Complex. This paper covers the search for a suitable design methodology for off-reef tunnels at Impala Platinum Mine, situated on the Western Lobe of the Bushveld Complex. The fall of ground accident statistics for off-reef excavations of the mine are presented and the available rock mass quality evaluation systems are reviewed. The Q-Tunnelling Quality Index (or Q-Index) is selected because it assesses the important driving factors behind falls of ground at Impala. Two off-reef excavations are evaluated using the Q-Index, and it is shown that minor modifications are required for implementation at Impala. It will take some time before support design throughout the mine is based on the outcome of proper geotechnical investigations based on the Q-Index. Widespread implementation of such support designs should help to solve the fall of ground problem in off-reef excavations while at the same time reducing support costs.

The past decade has seen rapid expansion in the West African mineral exploration environment. This expansion has been largely driven by changes in ?Political climate ?Fiscal and legal regimes ?Exploration approaches ?West African geology. Major regional mapping and geochemical surveys by the UNDP, and the BRGM in the late 1970s and early 1980s laid the foundation for the rapid development of mineral exploration and resources during the past decade. An additional driving impetus was the discovery by native artisanal miners of many significant new gold occurrences at Libiri, Essakan, Bouda and Tirahori, during the great droughts of the late seventies and early eighties.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B Eng Met Surface coatings persisting on zircon particles, after being leached in an acidic solution, are believed to be the cause of zircon misplacement during the electrostatic separation of heavy mineral beach sands. Electrostatic separation is employed to separate non-conductive zircon particles from more conductive rutile particles. Surface coatings on zircon particles are believed to render the non-conductive zircon particles more conductive, resulting in the contamination of the more conductive rutile stream with zircon particles. Resistivity measurements, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed to compare the surface characteristics of zircon particles found in the different product streams following electrostatic separation. XPS analysis showed that no significant difference exists in the outermost layer of the zircon particles found in the different streams. SEM analysis showed the existing surface coatings on zircon particles from different product streams to have similar chemical compositions. Resistivity measurements confirmed the results obtained from both the XPS and SEM analysis; no significant differences in the resitivities were observed. From the results obtained it suggests that surface coatings present on zircon particles are unlikely the primary cause of zircon misplacement. Zircon losses can possibly be a result of machine related aspects. Key words: XPS; SEM; resistivity measurements; electrostatic separation; heavy mineral sands.

The implementation of routine real-time micro-seismic monitoring of open pit mine slopes has been discussed. Some examples of seismic arrays have been given, and a recommendation of suitable seismic sensors made. Unfortunately near-surface sensors are required for good location accuracy, and the effects of reflection, mode conversion and surface waves must be accepted and compensated for during processing of the seismograms. It makes sense that mining at the base of a slope and levels of seismic activity within the slope should be related, and this is confirmed using both 2002-2003 and 2005 seismic data recorded at Navachab mine. An example of how seismic data can be used to gain information about seismically active geological structures has been described. The removal of broken rock, and not blasting nor the breaking of supporting rock, has been found to cause slope micro-seismicity. While the standard Brune source model is suitable for some 20% of the seismic events, unreasonable results are obtained for the rest. A moment tensor inversion has been performed after S-wave splitting and surface effects have been filtered out. This approach confirms a predominantly shear mechanism for a typical high frequency source.

Mining production scheduling is the process of determining the sequence of block extraction over a period of time that will yield the maximum net present value for a mining operation. The block extraction sequence needs to occur under certain resource constraints which presents an NP-hard problem that is computationally intractable and complex to solve for large scale problems using exact mathematical models such as Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). In this paper, we used a metaheuristic optimisation model based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA) to solve the production scheduling problem. The problem definition and resource constraints are formulated using a mining specific GA that enforces block extraction precedence and mining capacity constraints through a normalisation method. A case study is implemented with the GA model, and the results and computational time are compared with that of a MILP model with CPLEX solver which is based on a branch-and-cut algorithm.

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. The Gordonsville Operation of Pasminco US Inc. along with the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech studied, developed and implemented a pilot-scale hydrometallurgical facility for the industrial recovery of germanium and gallium. This paper describes the joint testing and engineering programme that culminated in this successful process.

Discussion on the load bearing capacity of ground and the stability of tunnel is presented. We derive a simplified solution of a circular lined-tunnel in an elastic ground. The solution results in a better understanding of characteristic curves. Use of DEM allows us to consider effects of possible yield of the overstressed zone around the tunnel and inherent discontinuity of ground on the curves. Diskussion auf der Last Tragfähigkeit Bodens und die Stabilität des Tunnels wird dargestellt. Wir leiten eine vereinfachte Lösung eines kreisförmigen Ausbautunnels in einem elastischen Boden ab. Die Lösung ergibt ein besseres Verständnis der Kennlinien. Um Gebrauch DEM erlaubt uns, zu betrachten Effekte des möglichen Ergebnisses der überbetonten Zone den Tunnel und zugehörige Unstimmigkeit des Bodens auf den Kurven. La discussion sur la portance de charge de la terre et de la stabilité du tunnel est présentée. Nous dérivons une solution simplifiée d'un revêtement-tunnel circulaire dans une terre élastique. La solution a comme conséquence une meilleure compréhension des courbes caractéristiques. L'utilisation de DEM nous permet de considérer des effets du rendement possible de la zone surchargée autour du tunnel et de la discontinuité inhérente de la terre sur les courbes.

Current mine production planning, scheduling, and allocation of resources are based on mathematical programming models. In practice, the optimized solution cannot be attained without examining all possible combinations and permutations of the extraction sequence. Operations research methods have limited applications in large-scale surface mining operations because the number of variables becomes too large. The primary objective of this study is to develop and implement a hybrid simulation framework for the open pit scheduling problem. The paper investigates the dynamics of open pit geometry and the subsequent material movement as a continuous system described by time-dependent differential equations. The continuous open pit simulator (COPS) implemented in MATLAB, based on modified elliptical frustum is used to model the evolution of open pit geometry in time and space. Discrete open pit simulator (DOPS) mimics the periodic expansion of the open pit layouts. Function approximation of the discrete simulated push-backs provides the means to convert the set of partial differential equations (PDEs), capturing the dynamics of open pit layouts, to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Numerical integration with the Runge-Kutta scheme yields the trajectory of the pit geometry over time with the respective volume of materials and the net present value (NPV) of the mining operation. A case study of an iron ore mine with 114 000 blocks was carried out to verify and validate the model. The optimized pit limit was designed using Lerchs-Grossman?s algorithm. The best-case annual schedule, generated by the shells node in Whittle Four-X yielded an NPV of $449 million over a 21-year mine life at a discount rate of 10% per annum. DOPS best scenario out of 2 500 simulation iterations resulted in an NPV of $443 million and COPS yielded an NPV of $440 million over the same time span. The hybrid simulation model is the basis for future research using reinforcement learning based on goal-directed intelligent agents.

South Africa remains the largest global producer of gold, accounting for 11.3 per cent of total world mine production, which amounted to 2520.2 t in 2005. The benefits and disadvantages associated with hedging practices in general, and among South African gold producers is examined. The wide variety and unique nature of risks faced by the mining industries provide a strong case for hedging. Only the principles of hedging, such as selling ounces of gold in the ground at a pre-agreed price for delivery at a future date as a cost-effective mechanism for price risk management, is discussed. Progressive and cumulative increases in the volume of forward sales in the major producing countries are considered by many to be the cause of the declining gold price over the past decade. In spite of negative publicity, forward selling continued as an industry-wide practice until recently (2002) when the global hedge book contracted by 352 t; contraction amounted to 158.6 t in first quarter of 2006. The objectives and benefits of hedging include continuity and stability of cash flows, stability in price achieved, reduction of frictional costs, and creating an effective management tool. The importance of a defined hedging strategy in reducing uncertainty about the hedging objectives is essential to a successful hedging policy. Historical patterns in hedging revenues at an industry level indicate five distinct periods during which the fortunes of hedgers have fluctuated. Finally, since 2001 the rising gold price and reduced price volatility through the consolidation in the global price means that the need to stabilize revenue flows is less urgent. This has meant that hedging is becoming progressively less important for the mining industry at large.

During galena flotation of Rosh Pinah milled material, metal ions and salts contents of various water resources (deionized, simulated circulated, lead concentrate thickener, lead tailing thickener and borehole) influenced mineral recoveries, upgrade ratios, selectivities, froth stability and flotation kinetics. The various water resources employed during galena flotation caused activation, depression or selectivity effects on minerals due to the presence of different ions in solution. Metal ions in these water resources were adsorbed by the ore, whilst ions associated with gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) were released into the flotation pulp. Lead concentrate thickener water caused depression of sphalerite and pyrite, increased fast floating fractions for silver, copper minerals, sphalerite and quartz (unwanted), and improved slow floating rate selectivity against pyrite and sphalerite. Lead tailing thickener water enhanced sphalerite recovery during galena flotation (unwanted), and increased fast floating fractions of pyrite. Western borehole water did not affect galena recovery, but sphalerite and pyrite recoveries were unacceptably too high. Ions from copper, lead, and zinc salts tended to release high amounts of ions, such as calcium, magnesium, silicon, and manganese from gangue minerals (dolomite and quartz) during milling. During galena flotation, lead ions depressed sphalerite, pyrite and dolomite at a lead concentration of 400 ppm, but sphalerite was activated at a concentration of 800 ppm. Sphalerite was activated with copper ions (89% recovery, 2.09 upgrade ratio) and depressed with zinc ions (maximum recovery of 25%). This corresponds with findings in previous investigations. Dolomite and quartz were slightly activated with zinc ions. No evidence was found that lead and copper ions activated any gangue minerals during galena flotation. Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. The technological advancements in computing power in the last 30 years have enabled the practical visualization of complex geological environments in three-dimensional (3D) space. 3D models and their application in the mining industry are becoming increasingly important, for example, to identify future exploration areas and targets, for mineral assessment and evaluation, and prediction and planning of future drill-holes. However, acquiring borehole data is an expensive practice, with drilling programmes costing mining companies up to billions of dollars each year. Tighter financial constraints on exploration budgets result in more pressure being put on three-dimensional models to accurately identify future target areas. This article aims to evaluate the potential drilling success of simulated greenfield and brownfield exploration using a 3D geological model created of Leeuwpoort tin mine. These simulations investigate the probability of intersecting a mineralized zone of economic interest and evaluate how the probability is affected when the number of drill-holes and distance from a known intersection changes. Furthermore, these simulations attempt to obtain an indication for the minimum number of drill-holes required for a successful exploration campaign at the mine. The investigation also aims to establish a first-pass attempt towards developing a ‘favoured procedure’ for identifying potential exploration targets for tin deposits with geological and geochemical characteristics similar to Leeuwpoort. The results for the ‘favoured procedure’ established are statistically tested using the ‘bootstrapping’ method. By simulating various exploration scenarios, the study also emphasises the importance of predicting successful drilling, which aids in budgeting for drilling programmes as the minimum number of drillholes needed for a specific exploration project can be determined.

Keywords: Thermal, conductivity, diffusivity, expansion, history, density, specific heat capacity, industrial rich high-carbon manganese slag The thermal conductivity of slag is an important parameter in the design of furnace-containment systems based on freeze-lining technology. Literature indicates that the crystal content of a slag has a significant influence on its thermal conductivity. Industrial, rich, manganese-bearing slag was cooled at different rates to create samples with different microstructures. The coefficients of thermal conductivity of these samples were measured in a nitrogen atmosphere from room temperature to 990°C at 100°C intervals. The laser-flash measurement technique was used for this purpose. Follow-up investigations included XRF and XRD and modelling in FACTSage.

A typical sub-level block cave mining extraction method employs an undercut level to establish a cavity in hard rock, and as such requires special support methods and products to be installed during the development phase. The undercut level development in the block cave orebody is then sacrificial, and support elements will eventually report to the crusher and perhaps conveyor belt systems for transportation to surface. The choice of support products installed in the undercut level development should take cognizance of the detrimental effect these could have on the mining system such as cutting of conveyor belts, obstructing crushers, safety aspects, and productivity. This work explores the probability and practicality of making use of new-generation support products to make the operation safer as well as enhance productivity in the development phase and during the undercut operation. This paper will investigate the use of glass reinforced plastic(GRP) rockbolts and GRP mesh instead of conventional steel bolts and mesh along with resin capsule-filled holes with the GRP bolts. Complementing this with thin spray liner (TSL) application as another means of creating a safer operating environment, as well as a productive support medium, will also be addressed. These proposed items are envisaged to reduce production downtime and improve the safety of our people. These items are all easy and light to handle, cuttable and crusher friendly, as they will break up during the crushing process.
