The exact application of sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry has precipitated considerable debate in recent years. Since the publication of the Brundtland Commission?s Report, Our Common Future, numerous attempts have been made to define sustainable development in the mining context. The inability of the Brundtland Report to outline an effective sustainability framework, combined with its contention that no single blueprint for sustainable development exists, has prompted many academics and practitioners to provide viewpoints on the application of sustainable development in the mining and minerals industry. This paper provides an overview of the many groups of assessments made of sustainable development in the mining industry. Sustainability assessment and reporting for this industry sector using indicators are also addressed.

Construction of two shafts, as well as associated deep concrete structures, for a major storm sewer project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin required ground water control and temporary ground support to depths ranging from 19.2m to 55.0m. Lowering of the site ground water table eras not possible because of potential consequences for existing nearby structures. Construction entailed completion of two shaft collars into bedrock. In addition to the shafts, several adjacent connected. structures were completed. Ground freezing was selected to provide temporary ground support and ground water control for all excavations. The first application of using reinforced frozen earth was successfully incorporated on the project. The procedure enabled the contractor to create openings in excess of 9.1m in height, without bracing, through highly stressed frozen earth walls. Design features and construction procedures for completion of ground freezing and related excavation are reported.

Over the past decade mined unlined rock cavern storage for crude oil and refined products has become economically more attractive. This trend is likely to continue, primarily due to advances in excavation methods, rising steel costs for above ground tanks and larger capacity requirements. The construction experience related in this paper comprises the excavation of more than 80 storage facilities (total capacity 90 million bbl) for crude and refined products ranging from propane to heavy fuel oil. This paper also deals with the experience gained as well as the problems derived from the utilization of these oil storage facilities.

The Campbell gold operation of Placer Dome Inc. produces an arsenopyrite-sulfide concentrate that must be treated by roasting, biooxidation or pressure oxidation to obtain high gold recoveries. Pressure oxidation is a proven process that also meets Ontario's stringent environmental regulations. A comparison of biooxidation and pressure oxidation was completed early in 1990. Placer Dome selected pressure oxidation as the preferred process to replace the roaster. The commercial plant design was based on technology supplied by Sherritt Gordon. In July of 1991, the existing roaster operation was shut down and a new pressure oxidation plant was commissioned. The Campbell Red Lake Mine, in Balmertown in northwestern Ontario, is the first plant in Canada to use Sherritt Gordon's pressure oxidation technology to recover gold from a refractory ore body. A similar process has been used at Sao Bento in Brazil since 1986. The Porgera complex in Papua New Guinea also uses Sherritt's technology. At the Campbell Mine, gold occurs as either free gold or is encapsulated with sulfide minerals, mainly arsenopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These sulfide species are recovered from the ore by crushing and grinding to 80% -75. µm (200 mesh), followed by flotation. About 40% of the gold in the ore is recovered by gravity separation. The remainder reports to the ground slurry feed to flotation. The flotation concentrate averages about 55 to 60 t/d (60 to 66 stpd). A typical analysis is shown in Table 1. Before the installation of the pressure oxidation plant, the flotation concentrate was treated in a two-stage, fluid bed roasting circuit. Roaster off-gases passed through two parallel sets of cyclones, followed by electrostatic precipitators. Arsenic trioxide was captured in a four-chamber baghouse before the gas was discharged to a stack. The arsenic trioxide was sold or conveyed to an underground storage vault. The roasted calcine was fed to a gravity separation circuit and then subjected to cyanide leaching. Gold was recovered from the filtered leach solution in a Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation circuit.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

A novel flotation device, cyclonic static micro-bubble column flotation (FCSMC), was introduced in this paper. FCSMC has been widely applied for fine coal preparation in China, and its application has been further expanded to the mineral processing industry. The FCSMC system features a unique cyclonic structure which enhances the separation performance of the column. In this paper, the cyclonic separation mechanism of FCSMC process was investigated, and corresponding kinetics equations were established to probe the separation principle of this device. Some typical examples of using FCSMC to separate different materials including coal, copper, fluorite, etc., were presented. This paper will be a case history of the shaft and tunnel concrete lining techniques used at the Rocky Mountain Pumped Storage Project located in northwest Georgia. Emphasis will be placed on the shaft lining techniques with only a brief description of the tunnel concrete lining techniques. The 10.67 meter (35 foot) diameter shaft and tunnel concrete linings are 0.61 meter (2 foot) nominal thickness with a single row of reinforcing bars. The tunnel was placed in 18.29 meter (60 foot) lengths with bulkheaded end sections. The 172.72 meter (566.68 foot) vertical shaft was placed in 3.05 meter (10 foot) high sections using jump forming techniques.

The Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited (REGM) operates three metallurgical complexes for the recovery of gold from the Witwatersrand Gold Reefs at the town of Randfontein, 40 kilometers west of Johannesburg. Mining operations in the. area commenced in March 1889 and ceased temporarily in 1965 when the viable ore reserves had been depleted. Exploratory drilling in the 1960's indicated viable deposits of gold in the Elsburg reefs, south of the Witpoortjie Horst Block, _which formed the Southern limit of the previously exploited areas. Three shaft complexes have been established to exploit this area, known as the Cooke secti'on. In 1983 the Doornkop shaft was sunk to the north of the Cooke section to mine Kimberley reef and the South reef.

The Coteau Properties Co.'s Freedom mine is a surface operation near Beulah, ND that produces more than 13.6 Mt/a (15 million stpy) of lignite. Coteau, a subsidiary of North American Coal Corp., ranks among the largest mines in North America. In 1994, Coteau ranked eighth in annual coal sales, becoming the largest mine outside the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. However, for the Freedom mine to stand alongside the Powder River Basin heavyweights, Coteau had to overcome several obstacles. These included a coal seam with three-quarters the heating value and overburden-to-coal ratios three times higher than Powder River Basin mines. Coteau's ability to compete has been built around a program of continuous improvements in productivity, cost efficiency and innovation.

Editor’s note: This is the first of two MINING ENGINEERING articles about the Grasberg deposit. The second, focusing on open pit mine development, will appear in the April issue of the magazine. The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc. lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in the mid-1980s. Production at the open pit de- posit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold ore body is contained within a young igneous complex of dioritic composition that intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork. Irian Jaya comprises the western half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg District lies 70 km (43 miles) inland from the Arafura Sea at an altitudeof3500 to45OOm (11,480to 14,764 ft). It straddles the Papuan fold belt. This belt forms the east-west trending chain of mountains that extend the entire length of New Guinea and is the site of numerous mineral districts.

Recent investigations conducted by Federal, State, and industry organizations suggest that significant coalbed gas resources may exist in the Cretaceous and Paleocene-Eocene coal beds of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain. Exploration efforts have focused on three areas which are in south Texas, north-central Louisiana, and south-central Mississippi (Figure 1). Coal-bed gas production is currently underway in south Texas and in north-central Louisiana. In Mississippi, several test wells have been drilled but no data are available on their production potential.

"This study adopts and analyzed a shield tunneling case in Taiwan, with a diameter from 5.25m to 6.70m and the smallest radius of curvature 100m, which was constructed in gravel formations as well as a vibration sensitive area. In this case study, a vibration monitoring plan, comprising the sensors inside the shield machine and on the surface, was proposed and performed to provide the vibration data during the construction. In this project, the major vibration reduction considerations were increasing the open ratio of the cutter head (to reduce the cutting function) and reducing the rotational speed of the cutter head. The results of the construction suggest the appropriateness of the above considerations. The findings could provide suggestions to the other similar shield tunneling cases. INTRODUCTION Underground vibrations during shield tunneling are typically isolated and absorbed by the soil. However, a portion of these vibrations may disseminate to the surface. These vibrations are considered micro-vibrations, which generally do not pose a threat to surface structures, and are thus seldom the focus of research. The present project was located in the Hsinchu Science Park where shield excavation bypassed numerous high technology manufacturing plants (e.g., wafer manufacturing plants). The vibrations generated by shield tunneling may affect the vibration-sensitive manufacturing equipment and instruments in these plants, and induce problems in manufacturing processes. Therefore, research to comprehensively understand the characteristics and potential influence of such vibrations is essential. To clarify the characteristics and potential influences of vibrations generated during shield tunneling, the vibration level in the excavation of the Taoyuan International Airport Access (TIAA) Metropolitan Rapid Transit (MRT) Project was examined, as it possesses similar excavation conditions to the present project. The parameters collected from relevant tests were provided as a reference to the firms along the excavation route of the present project to explain the effects of vibrations, and to relevant units for shield machine selection and project execution. No yield problems resulting from shield machine induced vibrations were reported by the firms, and the vibration levels measured in the present project were comparatively lower than those in the TIAA MRT Project. Because the related literature is scarce, this study aims to analyze the collected measurement data and provide suggestions on shield machine selection or designs. Such that we can more properly evaluate and control the impact of shield tunneling induced vibrations in similar projects."

Introduction The success of in situ leaching depends upon: • maintaining adequate injection and recovery flow capacities in wells, and • distributing leach solution effectively to contact and leach ore minerals within the target zone. Solution balance is an important indicator of the capability of a particular in situ hydrologic design to efficiently and effectively control and distribute leach solution within the target ore zone. As part of ongoing hydrological investigations into in situ leaching, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is studying factors affecting solution balance in an unsaturated copper ore deposit at the Cyprus Casa Grande Mine. The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of hydrogeologic features and in situ operating conditions on changes, during leaching, in: • solution storage within the deposit, and • solution balance. At the Casa Grande Mine, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility, solution balance estimates are obtained for 10 selected intervals during 17 months of leaching under a variety of well configurations, pressures and flow conditions. Operational and geological description The Casa Grande Mine is located 32 miles south of Casa Grande, AZ. The mining area is within the Casa Grande Deposit, a porphyry copper stock consisting primarily of an intensely-fractured, granodiorite cap overlying a copper sulfide base. As a result of mine dewatering activity, unsaturated conditions existed in the deposit prior to leaching (Schmidt et al., 1990; Friedel and Schmidt, 1991). No groundwater was present in any of the in-situ-leaching, test-facility wells after drilling and prior to leach solution injection. Also, no ground water seepage occurs in the test-facility drift. The Casa Grande, In-Situ-Leaching Test Facility consists of 58 injection and recovery wells collared in an underground drift. The wells were drilled at various angles into the granodiorite deposit in a series of 15 divergent fans (Fig. 1). The fans are 12.5 ft apart and lie parallel to one another between the 900- and 1100-level drifts. Each fan contains three to five wells drilled at angles ranging from 6° to 89° from the horizontal. The wells can operate in an injection or a recovery mode. Currently, 36 flow sensors and 28 pressure transducers (part of a hydrologic, data acquisition system) are used to continuously monitor injection-well flow rates and pressures.

"The Jurassic coal fields which lay in west China are the major energy base and contain half of coal resources in China. Due to the gather and degeneration rules, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal is distinguished with permo-carboniferous coal, which needs to be studied deeply. Programmed heating experiments of five Jurassic coal samples and three permo-carboniferous coal samples from different primal coal fields in West China were conducted to identify the characteristic parameters in the low temperature stage of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. The experiments were carried out under non-isothermal heating conditions up to 180? at the heating rate of 0.33?/min in an air atmosphere. The result showed that oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity of all coal samples increased with the rising of the temperature, which of the Jurassic coal was higher than that of Permian-carboniferous coal. The C2H4 gas of Jurassic coal generated earlier, more than that of Permian-carboniferous coal in the process of oxidation and spontaneous combustion. It indicated that the Jurassic coal was easier to be oxidized and spontaneous combustion and the index parameters of spontaneous combustion were different between the Jurassic coal and permo-carboniferous coal.INTRODUCTION Coal was the foundation of industry development, and occupied 70% of primary energy production and consumption structure in China. According to the data of the 3rd coalfield prediction, 39.6% of the total coal resources were located in northwest Jurassic coal field in China [1], where the quality of coal was excellent. The study of northwest Jurassic coal already dated from the 80s of the 20th century, about coal rock composition, coal metamorphism [2], coal-derived hydrocarbons, coal structure [3], etc. The results of these studies showed that the composition and properties of Jurassic coal was obviously different from Permian-carboniferous coal, as well as the characteristic of spontaneous combustion [4]. As a result, the spontaneous combustion characteristic of Jurassic coal particularly needed to be studied. Now more and more methods could be conducted to test the characteristics of coal spontaneous combustion, for example, thermal analysis technology [5-7], programmed heating experiment [8-10] and coal spontaneous combustion experiment [11,12]. In these methods, programmed heating experiment could be conducted to determine the oxygen consumption rate, CO gas production rate and heating intensity quickly."

Stone is considered by many to be the premium material for beauty and durability in all kinds of construction. Its use dates to the dawn of civilization and only buildings made of stone have survived from ancient times. The use of stone relative to other materials declined from the beginning of the present century reaching a low point in the third quarter, but there has been a resurgence in the use of stone in construction during the past decade, due probably, to new techniques for producing stone, a greater recognition of its beauty and durability, and greater affluence among consumers. The aesthetic appeal of stone is attested to by the many attempts to simulate it in synthetic materials. Today, natural stone is considered by many to be the ultimate in aesthetic appeal, durability, and ease of maintenance. Consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. The US Bureau of Mines reported that the total value of US consumption in 1978 was $1 13 million and that total imports were valued at $65 million in 1979 (Anon., 1980). In 1989 consumption of domestic dimension stone was valued at $208.3 million and imports at $525 million. This dramatic increase occurred after demand had decreased at an average rate of 2.5% in the two decades prior to 1978 (Anon., 1980). More than half of the imports come from Italy, but production of dimension stone has increased worldwide spectacularly. Meaningful statistics on dimension stone are hard to acquire. The finished piece of stone is a highly value-added product, but stone may be sold as rough blocks, sawed slabs, or finished product. The same piece of stone may therefore be sold and reported three or more times. Furthermore, although the quantity of stone is most commonly reported in tons, stone cladding is more often sold by the surface area and at the same price for different thicknesses. By any measure, however, the production and consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. A significant indication of the resurgence of stone was the introduction of two new trade publications during the 1980s. Stone World (Tradelink Publishing Co., Inc., Oradell, NJ), introduced in 1984 is published monthly and Dimensional Stone (Dimensional Stone Institute, Inc., Woodland Hills, CA), introduced in 1985 is published monthly. Both magazines provide useful information on new technology, market trends, producing areas and companies, and other information not previously available.

Separating oil shale from waste material or into high- and low-grade fractions can have a major economic influence on the surface retorting process. Different shale rock components vary significantly in physical and surface chemical properties, such as specific gravity, color, and water wettability. Various techniques that use the differences in one or more of these properties have been proposed to preconcentrate oil shale before retorting. This article discusses some proposed techniques, such as gravity separation, sorting, and froth flotation. Retorting oil shale is the most common method for recovering oil from the rock. This process is accomplished either underground (in situ) or above ground (ex-situ or surface retorting). Both techniques have serious limitations, such as low recoveries in the underground method and the ability to process rich shales only in the above ground retorting method. Also, environmental problems are associated with both techniques. Some of these limitations could be overcome if feed to the retorts is of consistent grade. This could be achieved by selecting appropriate sites for in situ retorting and selective mining for surface oil shale retorting. Both of these, however, would have a serious economic impact on shale oil recovery. Obviously, little control can be exercised over preparing feed material in the in situ retorting process, but beneficiation of oil shale could definitely be advantageous in surface retorting, and should have positive influence on the overall economics of recovering oil from the shales. For example, preconcentration of mined shale could result not only in reduced costs for materials handling, but also in waste disposal costs, since waste characteristics before and after the retorting process are significantly different. Upgrading the oil shale might also allow substitution of alternate technology for retorting as well as extend the process to recover oil from marginal deposits. Also, the separated material may become a potential source for recovering other values from shale deposits. Overall, the incentives for preconcentration are to reduce costs and improve thermal efficiency of the recovery process. Oil Shale Properties Important to Preconcentration Oil shale is a carbonaceous rock assaying 5-30% organic material (kerogen) and 70-95% ash-forming minerals. Kerogen is soft, nonbrit¬tle or semi-brittle material, and generally forms a matrix between irregularly distributed mineral grains. INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2.
