PROLOGUE Nowadays, where production costs and energy costs are increasing and at the same time requirements in fineness and purity of industrial mineral products are getting higher and higher, industry has to look for more efficient grinding systems and developments to produce these products more economically. Therefore lots of new developments in high energy jet mill pulverizing have been made. In the main, however, these developments involved more or less just the new principle of fluidized bed jet pulverizers but not the older spiral jet mill principle. In some cases, especially in the filler industry where laminar minerals are used and higher aspect ratios are required, the spiral jet mill principle has advantages in a better delamination of these minerals. To comminute minerals down to products with a d97 < 3 µm, the specific energy consumption increases up to 2,000 kWh/t – 3,000 kWh/t or even more, depending on the grindability of the mineral. So the production of these fine materials is quite an expensive task. But jet mill grinding is and will be the most favorable method to produce micro-products and in the near future nano-products, despite the high energy consumption.

"During the excavation of the north bound tunnel of the Devil’s Slide Tunnel project, deformation (convergence) was measured after passing through Fault Zone B. The tunnel convergence was not symmetrical, but was larger on the left side of the profile. It was determined that a shear zone nearly parallel with the tunnel drive was contributing to the uneven deformation. This paper will discuss how it was determined that the shear zone existed and how multi-point borehole Extensometers (MPBX) were used to verify that a significant amount of the deformation was occurring due to movement along the shear zone as the excavation was advanced. In addition, performance of the shotcrete liner in the area of the convergence will be examined. Finally, the paper will consider the means and methods that were utilized to ultimately control and stabilize the deformation. INTRODUCTION The Devil’s Slide Tunnel Project consisted of excavating two 1,250 meter tunnels each with a profile of 80 m2 utilizing the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) or otherwise known as the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The tunnels are part of the California Coastal Highway south of Pacifica, CA, a suburb of San Francisco. The tunnels were opened to traffic in March of 2013. Geological Setting The tunnels run north-south through the San Pedro Mountain ridge, which is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The tunnel lies within the San Andreas Fault system and is 7.2 km west of the surface trace of the San Andreas Fault and 2.8 km east of the surface trace of the San Gregorio Fault. The 10 km strip between these two faults is referred to as the La Honda structural and terrain block (Decker et al. 2010; Amini et al. 2005; Earth Mechanics Inc. 2003). Locally, the tunnel passes through three blocks representing different geological conditions: South Block, Central Block, and North Block (Figure 1) (Decker et al. 2010; HNTB Corporation et al. 2005). The South Block consists of Mesozoic aged granodiorite and quartz diorite. The South Block also contains many local shear zones and a low angle thrust fault (Fault A). The South Block ends at Fault B, which is the southern border of the Central Block."

"The global mining industry is facing increasing challenges in terms of geological, technological and social aspects. Potential exploi-tation of deposits shows a tendency to increasing depth with complex ores and decreasing grades. A promising approach to deal with these constrains is by applying alternative extraction methods like (bio-)hydrometallurgy as in-situ leaching (ISL) technology. The Bergakademie Freiberg University of Mining and Technology established the “Biohydrometallurgical Center for strategic Elements” (BHMZ) to foster the interdisciplinary research along the entire biohy-drometallurgical process chain to extract indium from sulfide ores. The involved Department of Underground Mining Methods deals with the design and implementation of a pilot-scale underground testing facility for microbial in-situ stope leaching in its “Research and Educational Mine”. This paper discusses the potential of in-situ bioleaching under technological aspects. In addition, different conditioning approaches based on hydraulic and explosive methods for enhanced permeability in the formation are introduced and the gathered data will be presened. INTRODUCTION A reliable, substantial and sustainable supply of raw materials is of crucial importance for any industrialized country. This dependency applies to “strategic elements” including rare earth elements (REEs), platinum group metals (PGMs) as well as a variety of other metals like indium and germanium which are needed for high-tech industry and products such as electric and electronic devices, fibre optics and laser technology (Barakos et al., 2016; European Commission, 2010). Due to the economic growth of the BRIC-countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China), the resource policy of China as well as the volatile world mar-ket prices of different metals the availability of these critical raw materi-als and therefore the dependency of the high-tech producing countries has become increasingly important (Barakos et al, 2016). Adequate supply is often affected by the increasing depth of de-posits, lower metal concentrations and more complex ore mineralogy. In addition, mining activities are increasingly restricted by their envi-ronmental and social impact and footprints. As a consequence, con-ventional mining and processing methods are limited by high energy consumption and technical constraints."

This paper summarizes the practical considerations of the various electrical separation methods used in mineral processing. The effective factors related to mineral characteristics and equipment attributes are described and analyzed with reference to conventional industrial applications of the electrical methods. Some new aspects of electrical methods application and their potential for mineral beneficiation, apart from the mineral systems that have been successfully beneficiated, are also presented. In addition, wet dielectric separation, which now appears to be promising, is briefly cited.

Many factors must be considered when designing a heap leach pad. Geotechnical properties of the ore, can and will affect how well an ore leaches, the solution recovery, stability of the heap, and settlement. As a heap is stacked some of these properties will change due to the increased load. In order to properly design a heap these properties should be determined beforehand so that the heap performs as intended.

Numerous mineral deposits of somewhat limited extent and grade are associated with most of the Tertiary granitic intrusions in the Cascade Mountains of Washington. The Silver Star area in southwestern Washington is typical of many of these small, and at the present time, economically marginal mineralized areas. Small but fairly high grade deposits of copper, lead, and zinc sulfides are found within the borders of a small granodiorite stock, and in surrounding Tertiary volcanics. This paper will discuss these deposits and their genetic relationships with the intrusion.

In 1986, a cooperative effort by the Homestake Mining company, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was initiated to determine shaft stability while recovering high grade ore in a nearby pillar. Premining finite element simulations indicated the shaft would remain in elastic ground. Six years have elapsed and, despite some initial concern during the first lifts, it appears that the bulk of the original reserve will be safely and profitably recovered. An integrated application of rock mechanics tools from laboratory testing through numerical modelling to mine measurements and observations contributed substantially to the operational success of the project.

The majority of Appalachian coal deposits lie in a multi-seam environment. Historically, the decision to extract a particular seam has been based on ease of access, ownership and economics rather than ground control considerations. As mining progresses and seams are being mined out, it is increasingly common to find working and abandoned mines in close vertical proximity to each other. Such contiguous operations can produce both positive and negative ground control situations in neighboring seams. These ground control problems, defined as interaction problems, are frequently reported, and their severity can range from minor roof problems that may require no additional support to complete loss of a large section of coal reserves (Stemple, 1955; Peng & Chandra, 1980; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Su et al, 1984). As a consequence, interaction problems are of growing concern to the Appalachian underground coal industry. Although interaction problems in multi-seam mining have been recognized for many years and many investigations have been conducted to study the problems, the ground control principles involved in their development are only partially understood. Previous research has identified four interaction mechanisms: pillar load transfer, innerburden shearing, arching effects and upper seam subsidence (Haycocks et al, 1982; Haycocks & Karmis, 1983). Pillar load transfer mechanisms and innerburden shearing have been successfuly used to explain interaction phenomena associated with undermining operations, while arching and subsidence have been used to assess problems during overmining. In addition, interaction-controlling factors such as cover, innerburden and seam thicknesses, extraction percentages on both seams, time delay between operations on two seams, and characteristics of innerburden rock have been identified and utilized in evaluation of interaction effects (Haycocks & Karmis, 1983; Webster et a1.,1984). As an example, Figure 1 shows the relation of innerburden layering and thickness to interaction on the lower seam. The combination of such theoretical work and the analysis of case study information has made it possible to determine, with a certain degree of confidence, the interaction damage in undermining conditions. The results of such an approach have been sufficiently successful and complete to be incorporated into a software package to assist field engineers in estimating potential interaction effects when undermining a previously mined upper seam (Grenoble et al, 1984; Grenoble & Haycocks, 1985; Grenoble et al, 1985). 1.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter seeks to provide an overview of important factors involved in the implementation of heap leach technology as a vehicle for gold extraction from its ores. Toward this end, brief discussions of the various elements important to this process are presented here. Topics covered in this chapter include a brief history of the process; basic chemical reactions responsible for the process ; characteristics of ores amenable to heap leaching; location of the greatest concentration of heap leach projects in the U.S.; heap leach components, methods, regulatory/permitting considerations; and economic considerations. Most of these subjects are treated at much greater length in subsequent chapters. Thus, this chapter serves as a summary for those which follow, in addition to providing the reader with a feeling for those topics which may be of most immediate interest. 1.1.1 History of the Process Modern Day Precious metal heap leaching technology has developed over the past decade, although the principles of heap leaching per se, as well as those of gold extraction through cyanidation have a long history (see discussion below). However, it is in the past 10 years that heap leaching has developed into an efficient method of treating oxidized gold and silver ores. It has proven to be both an efficient way to extract precious metals from small, shallow deposits, as well as an attractive way to treat large, low- grade, disseminated deposits. Heap leaching has several advantages compared to conventional milling (i .e., crushing, grinding, and agitation leaching). In general, these advantages include simplicity, lower capital and operating costs, shorter start-up times, and less intensive environmental regulatory concerns. A possible disadvantage of currently existing heap leach technology is a potentially lower percentage of metal extraction being obtained from the ore than would be the case with conventional milling (Potter, 1981; Hiskey, 1985; and Thorstad, 1987) The actual principle of heap leaching has a long history as inferred previously. For example, mines in Hungary recycled copper-bearing solutions through waste heaps in the mid-sixteenth century (Hiskey, 1985), and Spanish miners percolated acid solutions through large heaps of oxide copper ore on the banks of the Rio Tinto around 1752. By 1900, leaching operations were employing such techniques as leach/rest cycles to maximize copper recovery (Taylor and Whelan, 1942; Thorstad, 1987). Copper dump leaching is currently

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the autogenous grinding circuit at Hibbing Taconite. The scope of the presentation includes; a brief history, the process flowsheet and the steps taken to improve mill productivity, availability and metallurgical performance. Hibbing Taconite is located near the center of the Mesabi Range in Northern Minnesota 100 miles from the Canadian border and 80 miles north of the Lake Superior Port Cities of Duluth and Superior. A 105 mile railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where our pellets are loaded into lake carriers for lower lake destinations. It is worthy to mention the Mesabi Range&apos;s most famous landmark which is immediately to the south of our mine area. This is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine which operated until the mid-1970&apos;s producing more than 700 million tons of red ore between 1893 and 1973.

This article describes three practical applications of the Hill of Value (HoV) methodology within different stages of strategic planning for open-pit mining operations and projects. In the pursuit of optimal mine planning, this study establishes a comprehensive case study during the (i)design phase, by refining key parameters for efficient decisionmaking. (ii)production planning, where the HoV is used to define achievable production rates, enhancing operational effectiveness through a nuanced consideration of mining and processing capacities. (iii)Additionally, the study introduces a conceptual framework for orchestrating the optimal sequence of multiple pits during the planning phase, with a focus on maximizing project value.

"INTRODUCTIONCrossrail will provide London and the South East of England with a world class, high-capacity railway to ease congestion on London’s public transport system and enable better access between business, residential and entertainment districts. At the heart of this £14.8bn scheme lies Farringdon Station, which will form a major interchange between Crossrail, Thameslink and London Underground. The £400m Farringdon Crossrail station was awarded to a joint venture of BAM Ferrovial Kier (BFK) in 2011, and comprises two ticket halls, two platform tunnels and a multitude of connecting tunnels all constructed using open face sprayed concrete linings (SCL). BFK appointed Dr. Sauer & Partners (DSP) as their specialist SCL designer. As the main contractor for both C300/C410, the Western Running Tunnels and Station Caverns, and also for C435 Farringdon Station, BFK were in a unique position to develop strategies to reduce cost, time and risk for the Client. One such innovation involved the continuation of the TBM drives for the running tunnels right through the length of the new Farringdon platform caverns. This created large diameter precast concrete pilot tunnels for the subsequent platform enlargement using SCL. The benefits of such an approach are described in detail by St.John et al 2015. BFK also introduced another alternative strategy to reduce cost, time and risk, by proposing to abandon the TBMs in the ground (“Turn & Bury”) permanently rather than recovering them through the ticket hall shafts. This de-risked the programme, enabling critical ticket hall construction to proceed unhindered. However, one consequence of this revised strategy was an area of increased underground congestion, with two SCL tunnels (RTE2 and ES2) and a bored tunnel (complete with abandoned TBM) in close proximity to a ticket hall excavation (see Figure 1) and a sensitive, listed railway structure. Faced with this complex geometry, and combined with challenging geotechnical conditions (Gakis et al 2015), the team chose to install enhanced monitoring to study the behavior of tunnel RTE2 and provide additional assurance that the tunnels were performing as predicted. Applying advanced 3D numerical modelling and taking into account the residual tensile strength of the SCL helped avoid unnecessary reinforcement installation in primary lining and/or early installation of a secondary lining in RTE2 prior to ES2 construction."

The Caribbean islands, with their very diverse geology, are a source of several industrial minerals both for their own domestic consumption and for export. The geology of the Greater Antilles, which comprises Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica has a Mesozoic or pre-Mesozoic basement overlain by sediments and volcanics, the latter being dominantly island arc in character. Later granitoid intrusions were emplaced. Obduction of ophiolites also occurred variously from the mid- Cretaceous to the Palaeogene. Thick accumulations of limestones surround the older strata, along with Neogene and younger sediments. The Lesser Antilles islands form an arcuate chain, mainly of volcanic rocks of calc-alkali or sub-alkaline affinity with some younger limestones and siliciclastic sediments. Trinidad and Tobago have closer similarities with the South American continent in their geology. Tobago has a metamorphic complex, juxtaposed with a volcanic-plutonic complex, and limestones. Trinidad has very thick Cretaceous to Recent exposed sedimentary sequence. The current exploitation of industrial minerals in the Caribbean is dominated by construction raw materials (mainly sand and gravel, limestone, and cement), although there is extraction of gypsum, silica sand, marble, clay (almost entirely for construction use), pumice, and natural asphalt. Salt is obtained from solar evaporation of seawater. Limestone of high purity and high brightness, gypsum, pumice, and high-density igneous rock have potential for further development of their markets, particularly ex- ports. Potential new and undeveloped industrial-mineral resources include residual and sedimentary kaolin, bentonite, zeolites, magnesite, and talc. Cuba could be a source for many industrial minerals in the future.

During foundry sand reclamation process development, molds formed from reclaimed chromite sand showed a rapid decline in tensile strength during thermal cycling tests. Because this characteristic could limit reuse of chromite sand in the foundry, the sand was examined in detail. Scanning electron microscopy, x-ray mapping, magnetic susceptibility, and x-ray diffraction were utilized to evaluate processed chromite sand. It was found that process variables such as binder composition, reclamation temperature, and processing method had a significant effect on the chromite sand particle surface. X-ray diffraction indicated a crystallographic change in the processed sands. Magnetic susceptibility also increased after processing. Diffusion of iron to the particle surface and increased surface roughness were identified as potential causes of the decreased tensile strength in the molds.

The quantum of coal fines below 6 mm in run-of-mine (ROM) coal has been increasing due to progressive mechanization of mining methods which has created a substantial incentive, worldwide, to develop suitable fine coal beneficiation techniques. The majority of the efforts have been directed toward reduction in ash/sulfur contents in clean coal. The beneficiation techniques may be broadly grouped as those based on specific gravity and surface property. The processes, which use heavy medium cyclone, water-only cyclone, concentrating tables, and spirals, belong to the former group while the latter group encompasses froth flotation, column flotation, oleo- flotation, and oil agglomeration. In almost all the gravity based techniques, it has been noted that a classification step prior to beneficiation is essential for effective treatment. In general, the effect of design and process variables on the performance of these units and also the quantification of the processes have been the main areas of research and development. In froth flotation, efforts throughout the world have been mainly to understand the effect of variables and to optimize the process. Quantification of the process has been attempted through kinetic studies and mathematical modeling. The efforts have led to the development of new reagents, machine designs, and flowsheets for a specified objective. The attempts so far with the column flotation and oleoflotation processes have indicated a great potential. Extensive R&D efforts are in progress to understand as well as to commercialize the processes. The efforts in the oil agglomeration process have been toward substantiating the inherent merits of the process by developing cheaper bridging liquids and technology to recover and reuse the oil to make the process commercially viable. Modeling of the process has also been attempted to predict the yield and size distribution of the agglomerates. This paper reviews and summarizes the recent developments in the science and technology of fine coal beneficiation processes. The current trends in R%D efforts for these processes are also highlighted.

One-third of the world&apos;s and most US kaolin is produced from Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary sedimentary strata in Georgia and South Carolina. The kaolin is part of a belt extending to Arkansas of aluminous lateritic deposits, including bauxite. Original sediments were profoundly altered by chemical weathering during Early Tertiary time. Mining exploits those uncommon deposits where extreme leaching and chemical recombination have produced a clay of nearly pure mineral kaolinite. Properly selected and refined, kaolin is an important pigment, filler, extender and chemical compound in the paper, paint, plastics, ceramics and catalyst industries.

In the precious metal industry, activated carbon is used extensively for the recovery of gold and silver from cyanide solutions, particularly from slimy pulps and unclarified solutions. However, carbon can easily become fouled by inert particles in the pulp, thus decreasing the activity or gold loading of the carbon. This paper attempts to quantify the distribution of fine inert particles in activated carbon. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the intrusion of fines will be postulated. Precipitated silica and ground silica sand were used to simulate pulp conditions and their loadings on activated carbon were determined by ashing. The kinetics of intrusion of fines into the pores of carbon were relatively fast, and were dependent on the concentration in the pulp. Results indicated that particle size of the solids and zeta potential of the fines influenced the loading of inert species on carbon. Scanning electron microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry showed a decrease in solids concentration to the centre of the carbon particle.

Natural Zeolites are a less expensive and in certain applications a superior alternative to organic ion exchange resins. Mining and metallurgical waste streams are difficult to treat because the effluents which contain potentially valuable heavy metals such as copper, lead, and silver are often highly acidic and contain significant quantities of suspended solids. Under rigorous operational conditions, certain natural zeolites can remove the metals, which if desired can be recovered by either elution or conventional smelting techniques. There are significant differences in cation exchange rate, selectivity and capacity as well as resistance to either high or low pH, blocking cations and tolerance to elevated or depressed temperature and pressure not only between different zeolite minerals but between the same mineral from different deposits. Applying natural zeolites to the treatment of mining and metallurgical waste streams depends on matching the specific zeolite to the effluent by characterization of the zeolite minerals.

INTRODUCTION A great deal more is involved in a sampling effort directed at a placer deposit than physically capturing a quantity of representative material and extracting the desired component. The distribution and dimensions of the sample sites must be chosen after consideration has been given to the type of deposit and the concentrating mechanism. Interpretation of the sampling results is likewise an extremely important part of the sampling program. SAMPLE SPACING The interpretation begins with the selection and design of the sampling program. A decision regarding genesis of the deposits and their geometry must be made in order to select a suitable technique and sampling pattern. Deposits differing genetically will have differing distributions and degrees of concentration.

When considering alternative equipment choices in mill or process flowsheets, it is important to determine both capital and operating costs of such equipment as well as other possible savings related to downstream operations. This paper presents a few case studies and shows cursory guidelines for the selection of equipment for new installations or in the retrofitting of existing plants. Based upon recent plant experience, suggestions are given to improve the operation of clarifiers, thickeners and vacuum filters.
