INTRODUCTION The state-of-the art in the area of soil-structure interaction is not sufficiently developed that one can accurately predict the earth load distribution on buried structures. This lack of knowledge has led to the use of high factors of safety in their design and conservative assumptions for the loading diagrams. As a step towards the improvement of the design methodology for buried structures, it is important to be able to apply new analytical techniques and monitor the performance data obtained on full-size buried structures. The performance data should preferably include: 1) the actual stress distribution on the buried structure, 2) stress distribution in the buried structure and surrounding soil media, 3) vertical and lateral movements in the soil adjacent to the buried structure, and 4) deflection of the buried structure. Brown (1967), Davis (1972), Krizek, et al (1974), Krizek and MacQuade (1978), and some few others have compared the performance of full-size culverts with finite element results. Despite all these efforts, a complete understanding of the soil-structure interaction problem has not yet been fully achieved. In an effort to make improvements in the existing design procedures for buried structures constructed in an open-cut, the Department of Environmental Services (DES), Washington, D.C., in conjunction with Howard University, undertook a detailed study of Section II of the Capitol Hill Relief Sewer (CHRS). Inclinometers were used to measure lateral movements of the excavation wall and the total normal interface stresses acting on the concrete sewer were obtained using glotzl total pressure cells. This paper describes the results of the field instrumentation program for acquisition of data, their comparison with the design assumptions, and the results of a series of post-construction finite element analyses of the CHRS project.

Resume Guidelines There are some things to remember when preparing a resume. These include: • Limit your resume to one page, unless you have a lot of experience. Then it should be a maximum of two pages. • Use 8.5 x 11 plain bond paper, white or off-white. Stay away from colored paper, odd size paper, and cute resumes. They are counter-productive. • Make certain your resume is typed professionally. Be sure to check for spelling, grammar, and typographical errors. • Have your resume reproduced by copier or printing shop. The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

The transportation of solids by slurry pipeline is a rapidly growing field. Although early patents date from the latter part of the nineteenth century, it has only been within the last twenty years that successful long distance slurry transport lines have come into their own. The pioneering efforts in this country include the gilsonite slurry pipeline from Bonanza, Utah, to Grand Junction, Colorado, and the coal slurry pipeline from Cadiz to Cleveland, Ohio. Both of these lines were constructed in 1957 and had a combined annual capacity of about 360 million ton miles. Although the Cadiz pipeline was mothballed in the early 1960's, the interest in slurry transport systems continues to increase and one engineering and construction company is predicting that by 1980 an annual slurry system rate of more than eight billion ton miles will be achieved. The design and construction of cross-country pipelines for fluids such as crude oil appears relatively simple when contrasted against the complex problems encountered in slurry systems. Considerable effort has been expended in hydraulic research laboratories in an attempt to improve our understanding of slurry behavior. This effort has been rewarded with considerable success and is best illustrated by the large number of slurry systems now planned or under construction. However, slurry transport in pipelines is still, in many instance more of an art than a science. This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

On behalf of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to your Institute for presenting us with this opportunity to outline the regulatory control programme as it relates to the mining industry in the Province of Ontario. In Canada, and particularly in Ontario, we are blessed with an abundance of natural resources. Fresh water in the form of lakes and rivers covers nearly 17 per cent of the area of the Province. (Total area of the Province of Ontario is 412,582 square miles.) The mining industry, which had its beginning in the early 1800's with a small iron ore plant, has progressed with the major discoveries of nickel and copper in 1883, silver in 1903, gold in 1908, iron in 1939 and uranium in 1953, to the point where, in 1966, almost one billion dollars in mineral wealth was mined in Ontario. Water, in spite of its great abundance and with due respects that it may become a natural resource worthy of export in the foreseeable future, has become increasingly precious in Ontario, particularly in the more urban areas in the southern part of the Province.

Overcoring tests were conducted at the Near-Surface Test Facility(NSTF) to assess the suitability of five techniques (U.S. Bureau of Mines borehole deformation gauge (BDG), Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) hollow inclusion stress cell, Luleå triaxial gauge (LuH gauge), and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) doorstopper) for in situ stress determination in a closely jointed basalt. This effort is in support of the Basalt Waste Isolation Project, which is studying the feasibility of locating a nuclear waste repository in the basalts of the Hanford Site in southeastern Washington. This paper presents the results from the overcoring study that formed the basis for selection of two techniques to be used during the further exploration of the basalt formations at depth.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating the Co and Mn resource of the West-Central Arkansas District, including field investigations, mineralogical characterization, beneficiation, and hydrometallurgical tests. The deposits occur within the Ouachita Mountains and are con-trolled structurally, occurring along the axes of anticlines making up the mountain ridges. Brecciated novaculite is cemented with a mixture of Mn oxides, primarily cryptomelane and psilome-lane. Cobalt is concentrated within a particular Mn oxide phase, lithiophorite. Chemical analyses on head samples reported up to 25 pct Mn and 0.17 pct Co. Magnetic separation yielded products with up to 41 pct Mn and 0.22 pct Co at recoveries of 95 pct Mn and 93 pct Co.

There are many influences which have a bearing on the economics of industrial minerals production. The purpose of this paper is to discuss briefly three factors which have economic significance in the production of these mineral commodities. The three items of discussion include 1) the nature and relative value of the industrial minerals group, 2) project planning, and 3) market analyses. General aspects of these factors are familiar to most of us. However, an attempt will be made to give some current details regarding each. Also, in reality, project planning and market studies are usually so closely associated that they will be discussed jointly, rather than separately. This will be done by way of examples which show how these two activities actually evolved for two industrial minerals projects.

Advanced physical coal cleaning processes that are now under development may remove significantly greater fractions of pyritic sulfur and ash than do commercial coal cleaning processes at comparable heating value recoveries. These processes may be useful for reducing sulfur dioxide emissions from electric utilities and other emission sources. However, little work has been done to determine their applicability to any major coal market. The northeastern states of the United States are interested in burning more coal, but with further sulfur dioxide emission restrictions. Their nearest coal sources are relatively high sulfur Northern Appalachian coals. The project discussed in this paper, which is scheduled to be completed in June 1985, has the objective of technically and economically evaluating various coal supply scenarios involving five selected advanced physical coal cleaning processes; and comparing the economics of them with alternative fuel supply options open to the northeastern users.

The Guillermo Gaviria Echeverri tunnel and its access roads project in Antioquia, Colombia is a mega infrastructure project that includes a road network with the longest tunnel in Latin America and several short tunnels, the latter being the focus of this study. The design of the project required careful consideration of several special factors, such as the tunnels’ steep slopes of up to 5%, high fire load of 100 MW, bidirectional operation, and short lengths that make it difficult to place ventilation equipment. The combination of all these parameters cause a challenging design problem for the ventilation systems and smoke control of the short tunnels. To address this challenge, a risk assessment study was conducted to support the design of a new and innovative ventilation strategy that deviates from relevant guidelines and standards, like the Austrian RVS [1][5][6] or the German EABT [8] in order to provide a customized solution for this particular project. This strategy resulted a cost-effective solution, that allowed a reduction in the number of required jet fans and at the same time reaches or reduces the risk level compared to traditional ventilation strategies.

Barrick Gold plans to have four new gold mines in production by 2006. Together, the mines would increase the company’s output by 40 percent. The projects include Veladero in Argentina, Alto Chicama in Peru, Cowal in Australia and Tulawaka in Tanzania. All of them are scheduled to begin production between the first quarter of 2005 and the first quarter of 2006. They are expected to drive Barrick Gold’s growth profile to a target of 211.5 to 217.7 t (6.8 million to 7 mil-lion oz) of gold production in 2007. The company’s projected output for 2004 is 152.4 to 155.5 t (4.9 million to 5million oz) in 2004. Overall, higher production and lower costs are expected in the early years from the new mines.

The designers of the new Arafertil concentrator in Brazil provided for complete automatic control of the grinding circuit to meet the operating objective of maximum throughput at a specified grind. Analog control methods were selected because of proven reliability and simple maintenance, and in order to minimize commissioning time and effort. This paper summarizes the step-by-step effort required to progress from local loop control of certain individual parameters to an integrated system capable of achieving the design goal. Emphasis is placed on the practical aspects of commissioning a control system.

Biotechnology has become a household word of the nineties, and it is expected to become as important in the next century as the computer is in the present. Numerous books and articles portray biotechnology developments as nothing less than a scientific revolution. Almost everywhere one looks new biotechnical breakthroughs are being reported that offer almost limitless opportunities to harness the force of living things to produce materials and manipulate their properties. Biotechnology has been broadly defined as any applications of biological organisms, systems, or processes to manufacturing and service industries. This seemingly new technology is, in fact, one of mankind's oldest scientific activities (Table l), which has been recently revolutionized by techniques of genetic engineering that arose out of basic research in biology, biochemistry, genetics, and information sciences. From fields as old as agriculture and medicine to those as new as monoclonal anti-bodies, transgenic plants, or biocomputers are encompassed by biotechnology. Like most human endeavors, industrial minerals play critical roles in biotechnology. In addition biotechnology holds real potential to improve extraction and beneficiation of certain industrial minerals themselves. BIOTECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW Companies using established biotechnical techniques make up large and diverse groups such as agriculture, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The massive US Pharmacopia (Anon., 1990a) provides detailed specifications for minerals used in medicines. Alumina, zirconia, apatite, and bioactive glass have seen service as implant materials (Williams, 1990) and new uses for minerals in health sciences are being actively researched. Agriculture produced $361 billion worth of food and drink during 1991 in the United States; organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and enzymes accounted for $68, $59, and $42 billion, respectively (Anon., 1992a). It is not possible to separate the contributions of industrial minerals to biotechnical products, but they represent a very large and rapidly growing new field of uses. The new biotechnology has nearly 300 small companies, plus 15 established companies with 742 biotechnology-related firms (Dibner, 1991b). Revenues exceeded $2 billion in 1990 and are expected to grow to $50 billion by 2000 (Anon., 1992c), with worldwide sales exceeding $100 billion (Burrill and Roberts, 1992). Federal research amounted to $3.4 billion in 1990 (Anon., 1992b). The United States is the world leader in biotechnology, but other countries have large, well-funded programs. Despite debate about safety, obstacles to new biotechnology products are declining (Embers, 1992, Gibbons, 1991). Fifteen biotechnology drugs valued at $1.2 billion (Thayer, 1991a) are on the market, and more than 100 are in various stages of testing (Edington, 1992). Many diagnostic tests are also in use or development (Demain, 1983, Anon., 1992). Large scale efforts to produce or transform important chemicals are also underway (Ng et al., 1983, Hinman, 1991), and research into geologic uses of biotechnology has begun. Much has been published about microbial mining, oil recovery, desulfurization, bioremediation, and other geologic aspects of biotechnology, but this chapter is the first attempt to explore interactions of biotechnology and industrial minerals. This chapter examines uses of minerals in biotechnology; how biotechnology can be used to discover, recover, and beneficiate industrial minerals; and speculates on some potential, but as yet untried uses. Definitions What exactly does the word biotechnology mean? Bud (1989) states that the first use of the term was by Karl Ereky in 1919 to cover the interaction of biology and technology, and in 1933 the term was used in Nature. After citing seven different definitions, Smith (1988) concludes that biotechnology is a series of enabling technologies involving practical applications of organisms or their subcellular components to manufacturing and service industries or to environmental management. Walker and Cox (1988) suggest a definition of "the practical applications of biological systems to the manufacturing and service industries and to the management of the environment." Primrose (1991) says that it is "the commercial exploitation of living organisms or their components." There is essentially an older broad use of the term and a new use. The US Office of Technology Assessment (Anon., 1984) uses a broad definition that includes any technique that uses living organisms (or parts of organisms) to make or modify products, to improve plants or animals, or to develop micro-organisms for specific uses. Definitions are different, but they all have several fundamental elements that include the control, management, or manipulation of living things for commercial, industrial, or useful ends. While such a definition encompasses all of agriculture in practice the "new" biotechnology is restricted to processes involving microorganisms-plant and animal cells, or enzymes. Many consider biotechnology to be recent, but it is one of our oldest technologies as evidenced by the prehistoric origin of brewing, cheese-making, and other techniques. [Table 1] gives some of the important developments in the history of biotechnology. Smith (1988) breaks down historical developments of biotechnology into four phases: 1) prehistoric with no understanding of underlying processes; 2) nonsterile processes; 3) sterile processes after 1940; and 4) genetic and recombinant DNA technology deliberate design of special organisms or processes.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. The LA Effluent Outfall tunnel is a 7-mile long, 18' internal diameter, secondary treated effluent discharge tunnel currently under construction by Dragados USA for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District No. 2 (LACSD). The purpose of this tunnel is to add redundancy and increased capacity for discharge of secondary treated effluent from the LACSD’s Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, located in Wilmington, California within Southern Los Angeles County. Current discharge from this facility flows through two existing tunnels of 8' and 12' horseshoe profile, constructed in 1937 and 1958, respectively. When the new tunnel is complete, it will add an additional capacity of 670MGD in peak wet weather flow conditions. Geology of the roughly 7 mile long tunnel was divided into six reaches by the contract documents. Tunnel Reaches (TR) 1 to 3, comprising 19,550' will be excavated in alluvial sands of the San Pedro and Lakewood formations, with cover ranging from 45 to 90 feet. In this reach the tunnel intersects the seismically active Palos Verdes fault Zone. TR 4 is a 1,600' transitional zone between alluvium and the rock formations of the Palos Verdes (PV) Hills, comprised mostly of Malaga Mudstone. TR’s 5 and 6 total 15,591', and are within the rock formations of the PV Hills with overburden ranging from 315' to 475'. The primary constituent of the PV Hills is Altamira

Approximately sixty, small, surface coal mines in Pennsylvania participated in a program designed to improve safety performance in the workplace. The method involved the use of safety sampling and observation to assess the safe standards of worker behavior and work conditions. Data were collected through the use of operation-specific, on-site safety records covering seven major occupational units. Workplace events observed (acts and conditions) were assigned a hazard classification; feedback, both immediate and delayed was initiated to improve safety performance. The experiences drawn from this pilot project have proven the need to continue to pursue this behavioral approach; however, a stricter methodology needs to be adopted in the collection and analysis of data.

The selection of a stripping method and subsequently, the stripping equipment, are two of the most important decisions confronting a project engineering staff during the initial feasibility study of a new coal stripping operation. The selected stripping units average from 60 to 70 percent of the total capital outlay for mine equipment and their selection will affect the type, size, and quantity of the attendant equipment, such as loading shovels, drills, haulage trucks, and bulldozers. This paper is intended to report on an in depth study by Utah's Technical Services Staff regarding the selection of stripping equipment for the Goonyella Coal Mine in Queensland, Australia. We will touch briefly, on the objectives considered in this selection; the various alternatives which were explored; the general assumptions that were followed throughout the engineering and design of an appropriate stripping system; and computations necessary to determine the amount and size of stripping equipment. INITIAL EXPLORATION Utah Development Company (presently 90% owned by Utah Construction & Mining Co. and 10% by Australian investors) commenced systematic geological studies of the Bowen Basin coal fields of Central Queensland in 1961. The Blackwater Mine as shown in Figure 1 has since been established in this area and is now producing 3.0 million tons per annum of washed coking coal. Geological reconnaissance was then extended to the northern part of the Bowen Basin and in 1963 Utah's coal prospecting area covered 2444 square miles of Central Queensland. The authority to prospect north of Blackwater has since been trimmed to 810 square miles by relinquishments to the State.

Grinding efficiency in a vertical stirred mill is affected by a wide range of process and mill configuration variables. Of these, the media fill, size, and intrinsic density have a significant effect on power draw and grinding performance. Media-related factors that influence grinding performance include, e.g.,a higher media filling providing additional particle breakage sites, or a lower bead density decreasing the running torque at a given media filling. It has been estimated that the grinding media can cause up to a 30% change in the specific energy required to grind. FLSmidth has generally recommended that the intrinsic density (specific gravity) of the grinding media be more than triple the slurry density. This density difference helps to ensure that sufficient stress intensity is generated in the mill to provide particle breakage. It also reduces the chance of media ?float? if there is a spike in either slurry density or slurry flow rate. The VXPmills have historically operated at slurry density values between 1.2 and 1.5 kg/L, which translates to nominal bead intrinsic density range between 3.6 and 4.5 kg/L. The current trend towards regrinding bulk flotation concentrates to even finer sizes, to improve recoveries of fine grained minerals, has provided motivation to consider closed-circuit operation of stirred media mills. The slurry density in this application is typically higher than in open-circuit operation due to the higher percent solids in cyclone underflows. An additional effect is that closed-circuit operation increases the potential for media float due to higher flow rates as slurry is recycled to the mill. The normal progression in extending the operating range of existing equipment is to carry out laboratory testing before pilot-scale and plant-scale trials. The results presented in this paper examine the media density to slurry density ratio and its effect on grinding performance.

The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.
