Track-type tractors remain one of the most cost-efficient stripping tools available to coal miners. Whether they are "sweetening up" a dragline operation with prebenching or serving as the primary tool, dozers are important in driving down mining costs. This article reviews the application zone of track-type dozers. It also provides suggestions for site setup, equipping tractors and machine operation. In recent years, the track-type tractor has become more of a production tool in mining. With the advent of bigger machines, bulldozers have become a typical component in mining operations, removing overburden down to the top seam of coal. Large tractors can also be teamed up with draglines and other systems to maximize the effectiveness of the mining system. Bulldozers remain the tool of choice for topsoil removal, spoil reclamation or any application that demands low ground pressure, or short distance. The introduction of the 523-kW (700-hp) track-type tractor to the mining industry has made the bulldozer a low-cost-per-ton means of removing overburden. The large tractors offer enough productive capability to be considered prime stripping tools. And they can lower mining costs by complementing other mining systems (dragline, cast blasting and loader/truck). Four criteria determine whether a track-type tractor is the right machine for a particular application: ? Production requirements - dozer may fit job requirements better than a second dragline. [ ] ? Product support - availability of parts, service and technical expertise. ? Labor situation - how much of the cost per ton goes to the operator. ? Resale opportunity - recover a percentage of capital cost. Mining efficiency is economically controlling the cost of any system. Most operations rate the most economical means of moving material as cast blasting, dragline and the track-type tractor. All three of these systems share one common value: They are all sensitive to distance. Regardless of the application, all mining systems have an economic range. Exceeding this distance will affect cost and productivity.

In 1960, the Kennecott Copper Corp. and the U.S. Bureau of Mines entered into a joint research program to determine the changes in stress, strain, and displacement created by changes in slope angles. The field site was the Kimbley Pit, located near Ely, Nevada; the supporting laboratory investigations were made at the Bureau's Denver Mining Research Center. Following a study to determine the rock stresses in the mining district, the strike and dip of geologic defects (fractures) in the rock, and the laboratory-determined strength of the rock, a new slope angle and pit configuration was selected, and instruments were installed to measure changes in stress, strain, displacement, microseismic noise rate, and sonic velocities at several points in the west wall of the pit. Between February and November 1966, the west slope was changed from an average angle of 45° to a new slope angle that started at 45° on the south wall, gradually increased to 57 ½ at the center of the west wall, and to 61° on the north wall. The pit was deepened from about 500 feet to about 550 feet. About 2.55 million tons of waste and ore were removed by stripping and mining.

SUMMARY The productivity of drill and blast methods of mining in hard rock is limited by the cyclic nature of the operation, and a plateau of performance has been reached, even with the most advanced equipment developments. Higher mine operating costs and lower metal prices have more than ever generated the need for breaking through these productivity barriers. After initial field testing The Robbins Company has designed and manufactured, on a joint venture basis with Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., Australia, a prototype "Mobile Miner" for continuous cutting of hard rock. This paper describes the cutting concept, the initial application of a completed 1,156 m (3792 ft.) long 14% decline, actual performance and delay analysis, developmental modifications, anticipated performances of a fully developed machine, and possible future applications. INTRODUCTION Gwinnett County, Georgia, is a part of the rapidly expanding metropolitan Atlanta Georgia area. Located approximately 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Atlanta, Gwinnett County has a current population in excess of 600,000 and is projected to reach a population of 1,200,000 by 2025. As a part of the County’s master plan to supply drinking water for the expanding population and to increase system reliability, the Gwinnett County Public Utilities Department undertook the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project. Figure 1 shows a vicinity map for the project. Prior to construction of the Shoal Creek Raw Water Intake and Pump Station Project the County had a single raw water intake to feed water from Lake Sidney Lanier (Lake Lanier) into a filter plant for processing into potable water. This project together with a newly constructed water filter plant provides Gwinnett County additional capacity and system redundancy to prevent interruptions to the drinking water supply. Lake Lanier is a man made reservoir with over 800 km (500 miles) of shoreline and was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s for hydro electric power generation, flood control, and navigation benefits for the Chattahoochee River. Over time, Lake Lanier has become an increasingly important source of drinking water for the metropolitan Atlanta area. This paper focuses on the primary underground construction and lake tap components of the project including a 42.7 m (140 ft) deep pump station shaft 24.4 m(80 ft) in finished diameter transitioning to a 6.1 m (20 ft) finished diameter shaft, a3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter by 19.8 m (65 ft) deep intake shaft constructed in an average of 21.3 m (70 ft) of water, and a 190.5 m (625 ft) by 3.05 m (10 ft) finished diameter modified horseshoe tunnel connecting the two shafts. This raw water intake system, in conjunction with the incorporated pump station with 8 pumps and dual1,829 mm (72 inch) pipelines, provides a system capacity of 1,091,062 m3/day(240 MGD) to two water filter plants and is expandable by the addition of pumps to1,500,210 m3/day (330 MGD). Parsons provided design and construction management services for the project. The $29.6 million contract to construct the project was awarded to W.L. Hailey &Company. Notice to proceed was given August 6, 2001 and substantial completion was achieved on January 20, 2004. Value engineering changes adopted for the project contributed to completing the project at a final cost of $28.8 million.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, NIOSH conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the research, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This document highlights NIOSH's research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers, and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan, and if appropriate training is provided. Delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines have caused significant fatalities and economic losses in recent years. Instead of occurring right around the advancing face, this particular type of coal burst is characterized by its occurrence at a certain distance behind the advancing face. To better understand the mechanism of a delayed coal burst, we used borehole camera, electromagnetic CT, and borehole deformation monitoring device to observe the fracturing and deformation process of an advancing entry’s surrounding coal in the field. Borehole camera detection showed a zonal disintegration phenomenon in the advancing entry’s surrounding coal. Electromagnetic CT detection showed that zonal disintegration developed within 14 days of excavation. Borehole deformation monitoring indicated a deformation rate difference between the intact zone and fractured zones. The deformation rate difference was observed to increase with time and cause increasing elastic energy accumulation in the intact zone. The cumulative elastic energy in the intact zone finally caused a delayed coal burst in the entry. Sensitivity analysis of the cumulative elastic energy was conducted based on a thick-walled model deduced from field detection. The model shows that the smaller thickness of the intact zone brings higher elastic energy in the intact zone. This investigation provides an improved understanding of delayed coal bursts in deep coal mines.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

"The use of gas, temperature and airflow sensors to monitor mine ventilation atmospheres offers numerous safety and operational bene-fits to mines. Detection of dangerous gases, changes to airflows and temperature variations are some of the obvious benefits of using at-mospheric sensors in mines. The prediction of atmospheric conditions between sensors however is potentially difficult, and gaining full cover-age a mine will require either many sensors or a method of extrapolat-ing and predicting atmospheric conditions between and downstream from a sparser array of sensors. A dynamic simulation computer model technique is demonstrated to predict time based changes to atmosphere conditions downstream from sensors. The dynamic model predicts the time based changes to conditions throughout a mine model by simulating the mixing, addition and dilution of gases and airflow changes in incremental time steps. The advantages of this method is that a real time overview of full mine atmospheric conditions can be viewed at all locations, even areas without sensors. In addition, with careful planning and consideration of potential contaminant sources, the number of required sensors can be minimized. INTRODUCTIONMine Ventilation Sensors The importance of continuously monitoring mine atmospheres has been recognised since mining underground began and the effects of harmful gases on human health were discovered. Through the 19th and early 20th centuries, coal miners would take canaries underground with them as an early detection system against life threatening gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and methane (Figure 1). The canary, normally a very songful bird, would become agitated, stop singing and eventually die if not removed from these gases, signalling the miners to quickly exit the mine (Davalle, 2011)."

Researchers at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) performed comparative testing of six different water sprays at pressures ranging from 689 kPa (100 psi) to 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) in a 14.5-m3 (512-ft3) confined dust chamber. Testing was conducted to determine the effect of various pressures on each spray’s respirable coal dust knockdown ability. It is known that higher water pressures are typically preferred for lowering airborne dust concentrations, but it was important to determine at what pressure range the dust knockdown ability of each spray plateaus or reaches its minimum dust concentration. Results from this testing showed that several sprays saw up to 100% decrease in dust concentrations during the five-minute water spray testing period, with some occurring well below the maximum 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) spray pressure.

The "Old Reliable" four million pound blast in March of 1972 marked the opening, as far as is known, of serious efforts to commercialize the In Situ concept. That was a coyote shot, and it was followed by three blasts at McAlester Fuel's "Zonia" operation which were surface hole shots. As the only individual who had a principal part in all four shots, it seems to be appropriate to present experiences in the developments and evolutions of the in Situ method of ore extraction. Some of the problems will be described, along with proposals for management of such projects in the future.

The past three years have been the most difficult period in the modem history of the barge line industry. Having withstood the fuel cost run ups of the late 1970s and the imposition of inland waterways system user fees, the industry has struggled more recently with an overcapacity problem of unprecedented proportions. In responding to these challenges, the industry is undergoing important long-term structural changes, with the various individual barge lines pursuing an array of divergent long-term business strategies. This paper discusses these strategies in terms of their probable impact on the industry as a whole, and argues for the survival of a competitive number of large, national, independent barge lines as the outcome most in keeping with the long-term interests of the mining and minerals industry.

The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

Coal is expected to play a major role in energy supply in the next 20 years. Oil is a convenient and still reasonably abundant fuel. However, its major sources of supply are regions where there is nervousness about political stability. Uranium is a more efficient fuel - but there is a continuing community apprehension regarding its use. What coal may lack in efficiency, it makes up in long term availability and competitive overall cost. Moreover, diversity of source ensures stable long-term supply. In this way, a major role for coal in the world energy scene is assured. Cyclical considerations aside, demand for coal will increase significantly and it will meet a substantial share of new energy demand, replacing oil and gas in major industrial and electric utility markets. By around the year 2000, coal's share of world energy could reach 30% and rival oil as the largest single source of energy.

Chlorination and carbochlorination processes have industrial applications in metallurgical activity for extraction and purification of uncommon metals such as rare earth elements (REE). This study reviews the chlorination and carbochlorination reactions of light REE (LREE) oxides with chlorine considering the thermodynamic, stoichiometric, and kinetic aspects of the reactions. Lanthanides between lanthanum to gadolinium were considered as LREE, in agreement with previous literature, and the results were detailed in this review. LREE were analyzed taking into account their oxidation states and were divided into three groups accordingly. The results presented show that, although the LREE are chemically similar, their behaviors during the reactions with Cl2 and Cl2–C, and the different LREE-O–Cl compounds formed, have particularities. It was observed that gadolinium, in both thermodynamic calculations and experimental results, presents some differences, and it can be considered intermediate between light and heavy REE; i.e., reactions between LREE2O3 and Cl2(g) begin at approximately 250 °C, except for Gd2O3 that begins at 327 °C. The present work will contribute to a better understanding of the chemistry of LREE oxides and Cl2 under different conditions and the products obtained in the LREE–O––Cl2(g) and LREE–O–C–Cl2(g) systems.

"INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

On 10 August 1976, The Geosat Committee was organized in Denver to institute The Geosat Program. This program is an industry backed effort to evaluate and help select optimum space remote sensing systems for geological purposes. It is believed that the recommendations of The Geosat Committee can be supported by industry as additional exploration tools which can materially benefit industry and the Nation with respect to our energy and other natural resources needs. Appended is a general summary of The Geosat Committee Organizational Meeting and general review of The Geosat Program. The Geosat Workshop Report. Completion of the H-3 Highway Tunnel Project was a critical element in opening this award winning project. The exploratory tunnel was completed as a maintenance tunnel and included difficult shafts extending into the main tunnel cross passages. The project also involved a major addition to the traffic operations center including a deep excavation in close proximity to the tunnel portal structures. The projects also included various completions and improvements to the main tunnels, such as paving, drainage, maintenance, and a variety of critical life-safety issues, such as radio systems, telephones, etc. The highway opened in December 1997.

An uneven gas distribution through the burden layers inside a blast furnace (BF) results in abnormal gas resistance or pressure changes. Rapid variations in the abnormal gas resistance will lead to the occurrence of channeling. A visualization technology mainly made of pressure distribution was developed to predict BF channeling phenomena in this study. The real-time data of BF shaft pressure was used to create a 3D visual model by neural network algorithms and 3D real-time BF pressure changes were observed. The root mean square deviation (RMSD) of the BF shaft pressure was used as an index to set up the predicting criteria of channeling occurrence with the opening of BF Annular Gap Element (AGE), and a predicting system based on the criteria was built. The two criteria for the channeling alarm are the RMSD of the BF shaft pressure (> 0.15 kg/cm2 ) at the upper two levels, and the AGE opening being greater than 60%. This system has been installed in the China Steel Corporation (CSC) BFs, and the test results showed that a prediction can be obtained 8 to 16 min ahead of channeling allowing sufficient time for the operator to adjust the BF operation in order to avoid the occurrence of channeling.
