Despite the importance of froth flotation to the mineral industries as a means of separating various minerals, the commercial flotation reagents used have varied little in the last twenty years. Numerous articles and books are available describing existing flotation chemistry and its application, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Aplan (1980), Somasundaran (1980), King (1982), Leja (1982), Ackerman, et. al. (1984), Crozier (1984), Hansen and Klimpel (1985). There are many reasons for this lack of significant new reagent development including the general utility and relative cheapness of collectors, such as xanthates, and frothers, such as methyl isobutyl carbinol and the glycol ethers. Another important reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials which make reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limit the use of theoretically based studies to "predict" new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of "specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than existing general all- purpose commercial reagents – something often difficult to prove in practice. Faced with this situation, a detailed applications research pro- gram [Klimpel (1980 ab, 1982, 1984 ab), Klimpel, et. al. (1982)] was organized from 1979-1985 on mineral flotation with the following goals: 1) the development of appropriate batch laboratory flotation testing techniques sensitive enough and statistically reliable enough to identify small differences in performance between different flotation tests (i.e., between various reagents, even those with relatively minor chemical structural changes); 2) the identification of mathematical models with appropriate numbers and types of parameters that have maximum statistical power to statistically distinguish between various time-recovery profiles; 3) the generation of laboratory and corresponding plant scale data in sufficient quantity and consistency so that the highly interactive nature of the "flotation system9' of chemistry/ equipment/operating conditions could be quantified; and 4) the invention and development of really new and unique reagents for giving improved flotation performance. Extraction and processing constitute an important area in the metallurgy of molybdenum. Molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) production is one of the most important stages in molybdenum production. In this study, the effects of different furnace types on MoO3 production were investigated by using molybdenum concentrate as a raw material obtained during the enrichment of copper ores. Preliminary experiments have been made using a chamber type furnace, and a transition to a pilot-scale has been carried out with rotary kiln experiments. The effects of a different time and atmospheric conditions on MoO3 roasting kinetics were investigated by experimental studies conducted in the temperature range of 500–650°C. It was determined that the optimum temperature and time for sulfur (S) removal was 625°C and 180 min in the studies carried out in the rotary kiln, and it was determined that 0.61%S content was reached with an average removal efficiency of 98%. The activation energy in these sets was calculated as 89.519 kJ/mol.

Risk management is an established loss-control methodology that has been applied successfully in many industries. Recently, interest in this structured approach has grown in the mining industry. The main objective of this research was to develop a risk-assessment process, which is a part of risk management, that can be used by the U.S. mining industry to more thoroughly characterize risks associated with haul truck-related fatalities. The assessment is based on historical data obtained from the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) investigation reports, which includes 113 fatal incidents that occurred from 1995 through 2006. The risk-assessment process used in this research involves the following basic steps: identification of the risks, risk analysis and risk evaluation. The preliminary hazard assessment (PHA) method is used in identifying and quantifying risks. Risk levels are then developed using a pre-established risk matrix that ranks them according to probability and severity. The resulting assigned risk value can then be used to prioritize control strategies. This paper is a part of a detailed study on risk assessment for equipment-related fatalities in mining sponsored by the Western U.S. Mining Safety and Health Training and Translation Center.

Choosing a mining method for an underground ore body is a complicated and often iterative process. Advances in technology give the design team an overwhelming array of possibilities for methods and equipment. Hecla's recent discovery of the deep Gold Hunter ore body has given the staff at the Lucky Friday Mine the exciting challenge of determining the optimum mining method. Taking an ore body from prospect to production requires traditional resource characterization, including drilling, delineating and modeling. Developing the mining plan is an evolving process, changing with each new piece of information as the project progresses through exploration and development.

The imposition of non-market regulations, such as the proposed SO2 standards for coal combustion, will typically lead to less efficient (thus more costly) production in a free enterprise system. For the coal industry these increased costs will occur in several ways, among which are mining less accessible low sulfur reserves and transporting low sulfur coal to distant markets. There are, of course, social benefits of reducing the S02 emissions from the use of high sulfur coal. The social benefits include decreased health risks, reduced damages to property, and certain unmeasurable benefits associated with the aesthetic appeal of clean air. Proponents of Federal S02 standards argue that the benefits gained from reduced emissions will exceed the costs borne by the coal industry and society in general in meeting the regulations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which costs of meeting future energy demands from coal will change under different sulfur standards. No attempt is made to estimate the benefits of imposing regulations. Specifically, the impact of SO2 standards on the private costs of meeting regional coal demands, the competitive positions of the nation's major coal producing regions, the degree to which strip mining as opposed to underground mining will be feasible, the amount of coal being processed, and the amount of coal transported over major rail routes will be analyzed.

Bismuth, one of the heavier chemical elements, is a pinkish metalloid that is chemically related to antimony. It is a byproduct of lead and tungsten extraction and, to a lesser extent, of copper and tin extraction. Antimony is a metalloid and less heavy chemical element, an extraction coproduct of metals such as lead, silver and gold. While both bismuth and antimony are metalloids, their major uses are as chemical compounds. Generally speaking, it is safe to address this conference as a conclave of Engineers, Owners' Agents, Governmental Representatives, and Contractors. As a group, we have assembled here to learn of our compatriots engaged in similiar underground operations throughout the United States and the World. We are here to learn of improved methods, higher technology, and better management. Through the acquisition of this knowledge, we each hope we can improve our own particular services, products and projects. This session is dedicated to a discussion of "Costs". The most apparent reason for a discussion of costs at this level is to expose subjects affecting costs and propose methods to reduce them. From that premise a contractor can identify three areas of discussion: design considerations, contract considerations, and governmental considerations. A fourth area of consideration is an introspective view of the contractor's role in the design construct process. Unnecessary costs and risks attributable to these areas are contributing excessively to ever increasing project and system costs. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS On April 20, 1977 the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago accepted proposals for the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan on Contract A and Contract B. This letting called for construction of over 33 km (21 miles) of the Mainstream Tunnel bored at 9.75 m (32 ft) to 10.67 m (35 ft.) in diameter. The mining industry is currently looking to better understand, anticipate, and be able to mitigate business and operational risks in order to deliver the rewards of risk taking, and to minimize the frequency and impact of risk on the downside. Assessing risk works from the premise that the identification and management of existing risks can be very challenging, especially when threats are not easy to detect, the likelihood of occurrence is difficult to gauge, and/or the consequences are uncertain. Some approach this as a ?check the box? task, even though fire and safety incidents continue to occur and investigations often find the hazard analyses did not properly identify the cause or consequence. You cannot engineer protective designs and safeguards for causes and consequences that have not been identified appropriately. For the mining industry, risk management is an important tool for making critical decisions and, in some cases, meeting regulatory requirements. Providing high-quality documentation that meets both regulatory and corporate requirements is critical for maintaining safe, uninterrupted mining operations. Risk management is a five-part process: 1. Identify the hazards and their causes, 2. Determine the hazard consequences, 3. Calculate the frequency of occurrence, 4. Quantify the risk associated with the system, process, or procedure, and 5. Provide feasible solutions for the risks

The meaning of the title, "Blank Piece of Paper," refers to the need for management to take a completely fresh viewpoint to the problems facing our industry. These problems are so severe and some so new that conventional thinking may not be adequate to resolve them. Innovation has to be a part of every company's approach to the solutions, our concept is to start with a "Blank Piece of Paper.' The objective of 'this paper is to outline steps which can be taken to improve the profitability of a mining business. This is not an examination of technical solutions to individual problems, but rather recommendations for overall change in management thinking. This philosophy is based on our actual, hands-on experience in major open pit operations worldwide over the past 25 years.

Highly stressed excavations in hard brittle rock may fail by self-initiated, triggered or dynamically loaded strainbursts (Moss and Kaiser 2021). The low-frequency part of seismic radiation associated with strainbursts is described by a crush-type seismic source mechanism with a significant negative (implosive) isotropic component and a ‘pancake-shape’ CLVD deviatoric component. The seismic source is co-located with the excavation damage site. For such strainbursts, the ejection velocity is primarily related to the depth of strainbursting, the rock mass bulking characteristics, the duration of the bulking process, and the effectiveness of the support system. For dynamically loaded strainbursts, the displacement and energy demand may be augmented by the impact of the stress wave from a distant seismic event. This article describes the failure process and factors contributing to rock deformation and energy demands for support design. Case examples are used to demonstrate the dependence of rock displacements, rock ejection and energy demand on the factors described above. A seismic source model is proposed to assess the depth of strainbursting and the duration of the related bulking process by using seismic monitoring data. The implications for support design are briefly discussed.

Off-grade molybdenite concentrates, mainly derived from secondary sources as by-products of the processing of copper, uranium and tungsten ores, do not satisfy the purity requirements (percent MoS2) for the production of molybdenum bearing products. This investigation is a continuation of a successful effort to refine a low-grade molybdenite concentrate to prepare a high-grade MoS2 using a mixed acid (HF + HCl) leach procedure. Specifically, this investigation is concerned with an understanding of the separation chemistry underlying the removal of the oxide/silicate gangue and the base-metal sulfide associations present in the low-grade molybdenite by their selective dissolution in the two acids. Experiments were conducted on an off-grade concentrate containing 42.6% Mo. Results of the controlled dissolution tests indicate that both HCl and HF are suitable for the removal of the associated alumina and both work well for iron, nickel and copper. However, HF was found to be the most effective for dissolving silica/silicate and magnesia. An attempt was made to rank the leaching efficiencies of the acids used singly, sequentially or in a mixed mode. Scale-up (300 to 2,000 g) experiments were conducted to validate this approach. Excellent purification of the concentrate was possible by processing the off-grade concentrate with 10% HCl plus 15% HF at 363 K for 7.2 ks in open polypropylene reactors with internal stirring. These conditions leached practically all of the oxide and silicate gangue and 96% of the metallic impurities. Starting from the low-grade molybdenite concentrate (42.6% Mo; 71.1% MoS2) it was found feasible to obtain a refined product containing 97.8% MoS2, which is suitable for industrial use.

Strip mine reclamation Fs the process of restoring the land affected by the mining process to its most productive use. This can be timber production, pasture, crop land, wildlife and/or recreational use. The mining companies must determine, through the advice of their technicians, what the most advantageous use of the land will be. If the Company does not own the surface, the owner or owners must be contacted to determine their desires as to how the land should be reclaimed. Many times, in making the plans to restore an area with vegetative cover, the watershed and the quality of the water in the area is overlooked. The water itself must be an integral part of the reclamation plan. Many lakes and/or pits can be created with proper planning. In areas in the Midwest, where lakes are a scarcity, these strip mine lakes can become storage reservoirs for large amounts of water, They can help control runoff and low flow augmentation. The strip mining operation will affect the watershed regardless of whether a reclamation plan in made or not. It is up to the reclamation technician to see that the plan benefits the watershed instead of affecting it adversely. This can be done during the operation by intercepting the water before Pt enters the active pit. Diversion ditches above the highwall will handle the runoff water from the watershed. Water that does gain entry into the pit should be removed as quickly as possible. If the rules and regulations adopted by the Ohio River Valley Sanitation Commission in Resolution 5-60 are followed, water encountered during the operation can be handled with little or no adverse effect to the receiving watershed.

Costs of complex/underground projects have been consistently underestimated and delivery on time and on budget has been problematic. This has been attributed, to inadequate cost estimates and unidentified and/or insufficiently managed risk. Use of probabilistic cost estimates like the Washington State Department of Transportation?s CEVP® process (developed by the author and others) has produced more realistic cost estimates, explicitly identified and quantified risk (as input to risk management plans) and early awareness of key project issues. This paper updates previous work (NAT 2004), adds implementation detail for probalistic cost estimating as used by WSDOT, FHWA and other agencies and will address key issues in risk management, as related to probalistic cost estimates.

Mechanically suitable grinding mills became available to the mining industry in 1908. Since then, mill operators have been searching for the best material and design with which to line the mills. These liner systems had to fulfill several criteria. Most important, they had to last long enough in an operating mill to protect its structure from the abrasive wear of the ore and the grinding media. In addition, they had to be capable of efficiently transferring the energy from the mill to the mill charge in order to facilitate the grinding process. And these liners had to be easy to install and remove. The first liners used were generally made of cast white iron, Hadfield manganese, unalloyed high-carbon steel and composites of steel and concrete or cemented in flint blocks or natural stone. In the early 1920s, pieces of solid rubber truck tires were used as emergency repairs for broken cast metal liners. Thus was rubber first introduced as a mill liner material. The first patent for rubber mill liners was awarded in 1921 to James Denny and Rolla Watson, both of the Coniagas Mine in Cobalt, Ontario, and to Dale Barnum of the Comstock Lode in Virginia City, NV. This original design was covered under US Patent No. 1470597. It had a fabric backed rubber that was bonded to the shell of the mill.

It is a pleasure to be here today to discuss coal's prospects with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIMS--- a group destined to play a crucial role in shaping our national energy future. Much has been said lately about attaining domestic energy self-sufficiency, but to date, little has been done. Oil tankers from Venezuela and Kuwait continue to glide across the seas to meet our incremental energy needs. Meanwhile, our principal domestic energy resources -- oil and natural gas reserves in the Outer Continental Shelf and the oil shale deposits and the coal lands of the West -remain untapped. Help, however, appears to be on the way. In a forceful address last fall, President Ford called for the elimination of oil as a fuel for base-loaded power plants and its replacement with coal by 1980. He also urged the accelerated leasing of federal lands on the Outer Continental Shelf, the resumption of coal leasing on federal lands, and the development of a new energy conservation policy. There are, of course, many details left to be worked out. Language must be developed to put statutory flesh on the conceptual bones spelled out by the President. Congress must act. Regulations must be approved and tested, if need be, in court.

Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

ntroduction As the gold mining industry continues to develop in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, more deposits will undoubtedly be discovered that will be amenable to development. The Pueblo Viejo gold mine is currently in operation in the Dominican Republic. It has become an important component of that country's economy. Pueblo Viejo output is important to the government as a foreign currency earner. It is also said to be among the world's more successful gold mines. But, while Pueblo Viejo is successful, no other major gold discoveries have been made in recent years. Therefore, alluvial deposits of gold have caught the attention of geologists on the Island of Hispaniola. In the past four years, exploration and investigation of alluvial deposits have been initiated in both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This type of activity is expected to continue over the next few years. Alluvial gold mining is rudimentary gold washing, done mostly by farmers. It is an old tradition, dating back at least 100 years, and is done by small, independent, or community farming villages in the mountains and plains of the Dominican Republic. Investigations in the DR Recently, alluvial gold investigations have been undertaken in well known locations of the Dominican Republic. One is in the Villa Altagracia area. Here, the terraces and gravels of the Haina River basin were examined, test-pitted, and assayed by Minera Altagracia, a local Dominican mining group. Results led to a new investigation by the state-owned Rosario Dominicana (RD), the company that mines the gold at Pueblo Viejo. Rosario tested areas previously investigated by Minera Altagracia. RD could not define the type of concentration that could justify an industrial-scale type of exploitation. The Haina River placers are located in the flats and valleys of Central Dominican Republic. They are classified as small-scale type of operations where local cooperatives can do the traditional gold washing. It is not now considered a dredgable project for a mining company. The next alluvial gold investigation was undertaken by the Dominican Department of Mines and others in an area of some 700 km2 (270 sq miles) in the northeast near Miches. Farmers have been washing gold in streams and excavating pits in various areas, particularly La Mina and have made a living. Government geologists panned several hundred streams and river tributaries. They also washed material from deep excavations. The results, however, were negative insofar as locating alluvial gold concentrations suitable for large-scale or industrial-scale exploitation. The most favorable locations were the terraces along the Jayán and Cuarón Rivers in the area of Miches. But the grade od concentration is poor. Actually, only traces of gold were found in these

The aqueous biphase separation process (ABS) has been used to separate ultrafine industrial minerals. The partition behavior of TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3 and kaolin was not pH dependent. The partition behavior of SiO2 was, however, pH dependent. The partition coefficient of kaolin in PEG 3400/ Na2CO3 biphase system was = 150 and that of the silica in the same system was = 0.02, resulting in a separation factor of = 8500 between kaolin and silica. The aqueous biphase separation system was used to separate free silica from kaolin in a raw clay sample from Mexico. The partition behavior of mica, feldspar and clay from North Carolina was also evaluated.

Highwall mining is an important surface coal mining method, and it may account for approximately 4% of total U.S. coal production. Highwall stability is the major ground control related safety concern. Ground control plans for highwall mining should specify hole width, web pillar width, barrier pillar width and number of holes between barriers. This paper offers simple design charts for these parameters aimed at providing “ball park” checks. Web pillars containing pre-existing auger holes are analyzed and a design chart for estimating their minimum width is also presented. Finally, close proximity multiple seam highwall mining, which may have caused several serious highwall failures, is analyzed. Web and barrier pillar recommendations for this special situation are presented.

Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.
