"Low-grade iron ores are finely ground and processed to recover iron-bearing minerals. However, the iron-rich powder is too fine to be used directly in blast furnaces and most direct reduction furnaces, and must be agglomerated or pelletized into a usable product called “pellets.” Bentonite clay has traditionally been used as a binder to make iron ore concentrate pellets, but it is expensive and contaminates the pellets. Organic binders may be a viable alternative to bentonite clay. This manuscript reviews organic materials that have been used to make iron ore concentrate pellets. Included are discussions on the development of organic binders, common pros and cons to organic binder use, organic binder structure and its effects on agglomeration, and additives to organic binders.IntroductionIron ore agglomeration turns finely disseminated, low-grade iron ores into a usable product, called pellets. During pellet production, fine-grained, iron-rich minerals are liberated from low-grade ores, concentrated, and agglomerated into round balls that are thermally hardened or cold-bonded to form pellets. Pellets are then transported to blast furnaces or direct reduction operations where they are used to produce iron; iron is further refined and shaped into the wide variety of steel-based industrial and consumer products in use today.Over the years, pellet production has become increasingly more prevalent with the increased exploitation of low-grade iron ores and increased iron and steel consumption around the world. In 2010, world iron ore pellet production was 388 Mt. It could be argued that the current pellet production process has been enabled by the use of binders – practical experience has shown that it would be nearly impossible to agglomerate iron ore concentrates using rotary drums and discs without using a binder."

The Downtown Rail Extension (DTX) is principal element of the planned second phase of the Transbay Joint Powers Authority’s (TJPA) Transbay Program. When complete, this regionally critical project will connect Caltrain’s regional rail system and the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s statewide system to the Salesforce Transit Center in downtown San Francisco via a 1.3-mile tunnel. Studied since the 1970s, the DTX has now received environmental clearance, and key stakeholders are aligned on the project’s configuration and its expedited delivery. This paper describes efforts to optimize the DTX configuration and develop an informed project delivery strategy that incorporates construction industry feedback on project phasing, contract packaging, and procurement methods that accomplish the project’s budget goals.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Not only is 1971 the Centennial Year of the AIME, but it also marks the One Hundredth Anniversary of the United States Portland Cement Industry. On September 26th in 1871 David O. Saylor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, received his patent Numbered 119,413 for the manufacture of portland cement. "Cement" had been used in the United States before that. This was, however, natural cement - a direct product of rocks as found in nature, usually burned at low temperatures in open kilns. During the early 1800s this natural cement played an important role in such projects as the building of the Erie Canal. It was only after the Civil War that small amounts of high priced portland cement was imported from Europe. The successful use of this material in construction led to Saylor's experiments and subsequent patent for the manufacture of a scientifically controlled product in this country. These one hundred years have witnessed four major "ages" of cement . . . three of them occurring in the last quarter century since World War Two. The first age was the "Age of Development", a seventy-year period which saw the growth of cement and its concrete end uses as major construction materials. Next followed a period called the "Age of Demand" when, after the war, cement became in short supply relative to large building requirements. In effect a cement shortage existed. The decade of the Sixties proved to be the "Age of Reaction", with its courses of action coming in response to the problems that arose when the industry's expansion programs provided too much capacity. Today cement, and the concrete industries, find themselves entering the "Age of Reason". "INTRODUCTION Mining activities must be safe and profitable. These two requirements influence each other. The purchase and implementation of safety improvements costs money. Injuries and illnesses at mines stop or delay production and may result in additional costs or a loss of profit. Other effects of injuries and illnesses include the negative influence on employee morale, corporate reputation and conflicts with contract partners. Based on this researchers asked the question: are mines with lower rates of injuries and illnesses more profitable than mines with a higher frequencies? One aspect of this research is the evaluation of the safety situation and the measurement of benefits of safety improvements in the German mining industry. In the following paper, this part of the research will be examined. The main aim is the evaluation of injury rates in different German mining sectors and regions in Germany. SELECTION OF GERMAN MINING OPERATIONS The research team decided to focus the study on the salt and potash and the aggregate and industrial minerals mining industries in Germany. These two mining industries are different in the number and size of operators, structure of the industry, pricing and markets. The selection of two different industries adds to the clarity of the evaluation. Salt and potash mining industry The German salt and potash industry is primarily located central Germany. All salt and potash mines in Germany are underground operations. In 2015, the German potash industry employed 8,100 employees and generated a total revenue of 2 billion Euros. German potash reserves include magnesium compounds like kieserite (MgSO4·H2O), in addition to sylvite (KCl) and carnallite (KMgCl3·6(H2O)). The German salt industry employed 2,300 people in 2015 and generated revenue of 800 million Euros (Krueger, 2015) There are seven mining companies with salt and potash operations: esco-european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, K + S Kali GmbH, Saline Luisenhall GmbH, GSES Glückauf Sondershausen Entwicklungs- und Sicherungs-gesellschaft GmbH, Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG, Wacker Chemie AG and Südsalz GmbH. In this way, esco – european salt company GmbH & Co. KG is an affiliated company. Esco was founded as a joint venture of K + S and Solvay in 2002, since 2004 K + S is the sole holder (esco - european salt company GmbH & Co. KG, 2016). Likewise, the Südwestdeutsche Salzwerke AG has a controlling interest in Südsalz GmbH (Südsalz GmbH, 2016). Aggregate and industrial minerals mining industry The aggregate mining industry in Germany is comprised of many small mining operations and relevant companies. According to the German Department of Economics (BMWi, 2015), the following industrial materials are classified as aggregates: fluorite, barite, kaolin, quartz and quartz sand, quartzite, silica, loamy and foundry sand, pegmatite sand, shale, clay, bentonite, schistose, limestone and dolomite, gypsum and anhydrite, basaltic lava and lava sand, gravel and split, pebble and silicic sand and peat."

Injuries associated with hands and fingers are highly prevalent in mining and identifying factors associated with these injuries are critical in developing prevention efforts. This study identifies nonfatal injury incidence rates, nature of injury, work activities, glove usage, and sources of hand and finger injuries in the U.S. mining industry, as reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2011–2017. Hand and finger injuries occur at a rate of 6.53 per 1,000 full-time employees, which is nearly double the rate of the next highest affected body part, the back. Most of the hand and finger injuries were classified as cuts/lacerations/punctures (53%) followed by bone fractures/chips (26%). Materials handling and maintenance/repair were common activities at the time of the incident with miscellaneous metals (pipe, wire, guards) and hand tools as the primary sources of hand and finger injury. Although information on glove use was limited, leather gloves were most often worn when an injury occurred. When worn, gloves were found to contribute to 20% of the injuries, indicating their potential to protect the hands, but also potentially put the hands at risk. Further research is necessary to determine performance requirements for gloves used in mining operations, specifically those offering cut and puncture resistance.

A worker’s personal exposure to respirable dust in occupational environments has traditionally been monitored using established methodologies which entail the collection of an 8-hour representative sample that is sent away for laboratory analysis. While these methods are very accurate, they only provide information on the average exposure during a specific time period, generally a worker’s shift. The availability of relatively inexpensive aerosol sensors can allow researchers and practitioners to generate real-time data with unprecedented spatial and temporal granularity. Low-cost dust monitors (LCDM) were developed and marketed for air pollution monitoring and are mostly being used to help communities understand their local and even hyper-local air quality. Most of these integrated sensing packages cost less than $300 per unit, in contrast to wearable or area dust monitors specifically built for mining applications which have been around for decades but still average around $5,000 each. At the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), we are leveraging the power of high-volume data collection from networks of LCDM to establish baseline respirable hazard levels and to monitor for changes on a seasonal basis as well as following any application of control technologies. We have seen the effective use and advantages of monitoring live data before, during, and after events like shift changes, operational changes, ventilation upgrades, adverse weather events, and machine maintenance. However, many factors have prevented a systematic adoption of LCDMs for exposure monitoring: concern for their analytical performance, the complexity of use, and lack of understanding of their value are some factors. This contribution outlines a one-year case study at a mine in Wisconsin USA, covering the installation, maintenance, data visualizations, and collaboration between NIOSH researchers and the industrial hygiene professionals at the mine.

Medusa Cement Company, a division of Medusa Corporation, is a medium-sized cement manufacturer serving the midwest, east, and southeast. Medusa's eight plants are located in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Canada. Of these, six have active limestone, shale, clay, and sand quarries now in operation. This paper deals with the various individual state laws regulating mining and reclamation at the Georgia, Illinois, and Pennsylvania quarries. Several recommendations for future state mining laws are discussed also.

One of the few innovations in hydrometallurgy in recent years has been the utilization of the chemistry of basic iron sulfates called jarosites. These have been used to make iron-zinc separations in the processing of zinc concentrates and are a very important factor in both the Duval and Cymet copper chloride processes as a means of preventing iron build-up in the closed leaching circuits. Copper oxychlorides are kindred compounds in that they are insoluble basic salts that form at low pH (1.5 to 3) and precipitate selectively from many base metal solutions. They have been reported in the chemical literature as far back as 1860, and a few of them are known in their mineralogical forms (particularly atacamite) usually as nuisance minerals because of their chloride content. Several patents describe their synthesis and use as fungicides and insecticides, and papers have discussed their formation as corrosion pro¬ducts on copper and brass piping (14).

"Current and future operational processes in the mining and underground construction sector are under the influence of the prevalent competition and the acute necessity of optimization approaches concerning corporate and project processes. Besides general construction procedures, especially underground construction procedures and procedures in the field of deep shaft construction are high-profile. Those processes describe high technical challenges as well as increased requirements to occupational safety and health. Therefor an occupational safety management, which should be adjustable to the company itself and adaptable to all kinds of projects, shall be created. The creation of such an occupational safety management would lead to an economically optimized and safe (within the scope of OSH law) implementation of internal activities for the performance of construction services underground and in the field of deep shaft construction. With this approach the satisfaction of the high safety request as well as the demand for process optimization, as part of keeping the own competitiveness, will be satisfied successfully at once. PROJECT BACKGROUND Introduction The health and safety protection as well as occupational safety look back on a long historical development, which had brought more important sectors and developments during the last years, not only in Germany but also on the European and international level. The accident insurance protected by law has already been reported in 1884, which is astonishing early. The launch time point is strongly connected with the on-going economic development in the end of the 18th century, but above all this increased in the 19th century. The progress of occupational safety and especially the interest in the integration and the concentrated consideration of occupational safety and the health and safety protection in the company process is strongly visible during the 19th century and directly connected to the industrial revolution. [9] The industrial revolution and with that the development of work places lead to changing demands in the field occupational safety and health and safety protection. Insufficient security precautions caused problems in the industrial revolution, such as personnel and material losses as well as serious injuries and their consequences. These and the fundamental economic endeavours of the entrepreneurs lead therefore to the important step to develop an occupational safety system. [9] The prevailing basic ideas seize the insufficient security precaution of work places as well as the economical and profitable ideas of the entrepreneurs and bring them together. From this the necessary entrepreneur’s task comes into being and that is bringing the work conditions to the way that life and health of employees are not in danger. [9]"

According to the model of product life cycles, the global coal mining industry is in the stagnation phase. The coal demand of the main consumer, China, has peaked in 2013 and is slowly declining. The Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the world´s largest, has excluded coal-related companies for ethical reasons. Important players like the UN or the EU have already begun to describe pathways towards de-carbonization. Increasing competition between coal mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries like France, Spain or Germany are only forerunners of this development - their centuries of coal production have been finished. The concept of Sustainable Development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress where ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. But without the idea of competition, the concept of SD is incomplete. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be realized on stagnating or declining markets without guarantees for companies “to live forever”? How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can declining mining regions sustainably progress into a better future? The German hard coal mining industry´s lifecycle has ended in 2018 after 60 years of stagnation and decline. As of 2019, all hard coal consumed in Germany will be imported, especially from Colombia, Russia and South Africa. What has been done in Germany to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process is described in this paper. It may be useful for mining regions who will face a similar future sooner or later. INTRODUCTION Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way, or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example for the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the USA. (Kok 2017) According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global mining hard coal mining industry has reached the stagnation phase. (Kretschmann 2000) Although the coal mining business is more a multi-regional than a global business the trend is obvious. The peak of coal use is behind us, especially because the coal demand of China is slowly decreasing since 2013. (Shell 2018) China´s government has announced investing $360 billion in renewable energy by 2020 and scrap plans to build 85 coal-fired power plants. In March 2018, Chinese authorities reported that the country was already exceeding official targets for energy efficiency, carbon intensity, and the share of clean energy sources. China’s energy regulator, the National Energy Administration, rolled out new measures to reduce the country’s dependence on coal. (Kejun and Woetzel 2017) Coal consumption in the US is facing a 16 % decline in five years from 800 to 670 million short tons between 2015 and 2019 and - according to the EIA – will not rise again. (EIA 2018) The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” (Kok 2017, p. 3) to federal environmental regulation like the Clean Power Plan. The United Nations´ UNEP Finance Initiative is cooperating with the Portfolio Decarbonization Coalition of institutional investors to implement decarbonization strategies across their portfolio. Amongst these investors is the New York State Common Retirement Fund, the third largest public pension plan in the USA. By 1950, packaged oil and gas fired boilers were on the market for capacities up to 30,000 lbs./hr. By 1962, capacities were up to 100,000 lbs./hr. and even higher when separate heat traps (economizers and air preheaters) were attached to the boiler packages. During this period, complete packaged coal fired boilers were developed into the 10-15,000 lbs./hr. range. Oil and gas fired plant designs became very compact, "basementless", and far: less costly than the coal fired plants of any capacity. Coal fired plants remained large and expensive, required field erection of boilers and required basements. With the spectacular strides made in automation, oil and gas plants became far less costly to operate, requiring only the part-time attendance of a single operator. Some advances were made in coal fired plants, but not to the degree attained by the fluid fuel competition.

"Descending several stories down a metal staircase into a shaft spanning a quarter city block -- soon to become Roosevelt Light Rail Station in Seattle, WA -- visitors are greeted with four perfectly round, precast concrete-lined horizontal holes leading deep into the earth. The sound of water trickling out from a small drainage trough can be heard over the faint echoes of construction within. Upon entering, the light is dim, but the air is clear with barely a dust particle flowing through the sunbeams. This type of air quality is only accomplished with diligent controls, and JCM Northlink, the company in charge of building the Northgate Link Extension Project, is taking those measures seriously.Commissioned by Sound Transit, JCM is a joint venture of three companies: Jay Dee Contractors, Frank Coluccio Construction Co. and Michels Corp. The tunnels JCM constructed are intended to provide fast, reliable underground rail service, as well as relieve one of the region’s most congested traffic areas. The $440 million project will connect the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighborhoods north of Seattle to the downtown corridor and SeaTac airport further south.The scope of this project includes excavation for two light rail stations, boring of two parallel 5 km- (3.3-mile) long light rail tunnels in six runs and the construction of 23 cross passages. Begun in 2014, Sound Transit estimates that crews excavated more than 382,000 m3 (500,000 cu yds) of soil and installed 7,352 precast concrete tunnel liner rings during the shaft construction and boring phase. Now that tunnel boring is complete, JCM is in the process of constructing the cross passages, which act as maintenance areas and escape routes for passengers. Throughout the entire process, the company has utilized atomized mist to control particle emissions.“Our dust control needs change at every phase of the project and don’t go away until the project is fully complete,” said a JCM safety representative. “We found that different dust suppression technologies were needed at different intervals, but atomized mist seemed to fulfill our needs at every step.”"

In 1973 the percentage of total coal production mined by surface methods in the United States again increased, reflecting a long term trend. Barely three decades ago less than 10 percent of the U.S. coal was produced in this manner. Last year surface coal mines produced 299 million tons, 50.7 percent of our nation's coal. At present there are about 2450 strip mines producing coal in 23 states. While accident rates for surface coal mines are less than underground coal mining rates, surface coal mining is certainly one of the more hazardous occupations. Figure 1 shows the injury rates (fatal and non-fatal accidents) of major U.S. industries. Note that surface coal mining is more hazardous than all other industries except contract construction. Accident rates are about the same as the contract construction industry which uses similar equipment. A limited amount of detailed data was available on elements of surface coal mining jobs and this lack of compiled information made it difficult to assess the significance of the conditions contributing to accidents and to make recommendations that would reduce accident frequency. Therefore as part of the Bureau of Mines continuing research efforts related to the health and safety of the coal miner, a contract was awarded to Theodore Barry and Associates of Los Angeles to conduct an "Industrial Engineering Study of Hazards Associated with Surface Coal Mines."

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. Continued expansion of United States energy requirements has focused ever increasing attention on this tremendous resource, particularly as efficiency in mining and transporting of coal, as well as in electrical energy generation and transmission have improved and as hydrogenation and gasification of coal approach economic feasibility. This "total energy" concept for coal includes all of the energy uses that coal offers and has resulted in mergers of oil and coal companies and acquisition of coal re- serves by oil companies, as well as by coal companies and others. There is no doubt that these coals are entering an exciting new era of exploration and development that will result in greatly increased production. As a matter of fact, increased consumption for energy generation is well under way and recognition of the economic feasibility of high-Btu pipeline gas and synthetic petroleum products from coal is imminent. As coal is gradually displaced in steam electric generation by the more exotic fuels and processes, it will be increasingly used as raw material for the synthetic petro-chemical industry and the organic chemical industry.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). "In the recent past, the mining industry has witnessed a substantial increase in the numbers of fatalities occurring at metal and nonmetal mine sites, but it is unclear why this is occurring. One possible explanation is that workers struggle with identifying worksite hazards and accurately assessing the associated risk. The purpose of this research was to explore this possibility within the mining industry and to more fully understand stone, sand and gravel (SSG) mine workers’ thoughts, understandings and perceptions of worksite hazards and risks. Eight mine workers were interviewed and asked to identify common hazards they come across when doing their jobs and to then discuss their perceptions of the risks associated with those identified hazards. The results of this exploratory study indicate the importance of workers’ jobrelated experience as it applies to hazard identification and risk perception, particularly their knowledge of or familiarity with a task, whether or not they had personal control over that task, and the frequency with which they perform that task. IntroductionAccording to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA, 2015a), 37 mine workers were fatally injured in accidents at metal and nonmetal mine sites between October 2013 and January 2015, following a record low of 16 in 2012 and in 2011. In 2014 alone, 29 mine workers were fatally injured at a metal or nonmetal mine site, and 52 percent of these fatalities occurred at a surface stone, sand or gravel (SSG) mine. In January 2015, Joseph A. Main, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health wrote to stakeholders in the metal and nonmetal mining community and identified several areas where improvement was necessary to promote the health and safety of mine workers. One area identified was an increased focus on “daily and effective workplace exams to find and fix hazards” (MSHA, 2015b).Hazard detection is challenging in the mining industry, despite the existence of regulation. Mining is a major undertaking involving the use of complex heavy machinery, equipment and processes as well as numerous and diverse worker activities that take place in a dynamic, challenging environment (Scharf et al., 2001).
