Cement industry relies heavily on the control of large volume of raw materials in the proximity of plant operations for clinker and cement manufacturing. These mineral resources are perhaps considered as ?low-profile? (mostly comprise limestone's, clays, marls and sands), but their availability, accessibility and suitability ? the later with respect to chemistry, mineralogical and physical characters ? are factors of paramount importance and may largely affect production cost and plant productivity. The combination of scarcity of good quality raw materials deposits and the growing environmental concerns have challenged the cement producers towards sustainability and the responsible exploitation of natural resources. In open pit mining and quarrying, the evaluation of mineral resources vs. handling of the non-usable overburden and other off-spec materials directly affects the medium to long-term production planning, quality control practices and environmental management. It is a general trend for many cement producers and a usual case for a number of Titan Cement plants worldwide, that redesign of quarry pits is necessary not only for stability purposes but also as a result of environmental constraints and emerging issues. The material reserves then have to be re-evaluated in the light of the new final pit design, safety distances from houses, other infrastructure and Law restrictions and according to criteria of safety of operations, reduction of environmental impacts, pit optimisation and proper future reclamation. The paper discusses the case of three active quarries of Usje Cement Plant, in Skopje (Macedonia), namely Usje (marl), Goverlevo (lime-stone) and Ljubosh (sand), where a large campaign of redesign and evaluation of recoverable reserves and the needs in rehabilitation took place in 2004. Technical and environmental issues and criteria are presented in the form of master plans and the highlights of the first attempts to propose and apply a reclamation scheme are discussed, by also examining alternative solutions for each quarry area. Finally, the 2005 progress in applying changes to the design of benches and pit layout, as well as experiences gained, are discussed.

The U.S. cement industry experienced its best year ever during 2004 in terms of production and shipments of cement. Clinker, portland and masonry cements production and shipments were up considerably. Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 87.75 Mt (96.73 million st), an increase of 5.4 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker was estimated to be 91.6 Mt (101 million st), up 5 Mt (5.5 million st) from 2003.

Diesel powered machines are doing some specific operations in the cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has an essential influence on environmental health conditions in the working area. The main purpose of this paper is to show, using computer simulation, how the movement (dynamic) of diesel vehicles effects environmental health standards and also how to determine the required air quantity for ventilation.

Room-and-pillar mining at White Pine started in 1953 from a sub-outcropping orebody that gently dips to 1000 m depths in a distance of about 6 km. High horizontal stresses were recognized in the mid-1960s which had obvious stability impacts when viewed in combination with the increased overburden stresses. Modifications in conventional room-and-pillar design were introduced through the years on a trial-and-error basis to help overcome stability and resource recovery problems. These modifications were based on pressure arch concepts using pillar yielding and/or pillar recovery, and on mine layout orientation to minimize stress impacts. While some of these modifications were successfully applied in some areas, they failed in others. Through the years, visual observations played a major role in panel design with contributions from stress measurements and analyses. However, the down slide in the copper economy during the 1970s and early 1980s resulted in a loss of interest in the application of these concepts. This paper reviews ground control problems and presents the results of recent stress measurements and computer analyses. They shed light on the importance of using yield pillars and mine layout orientation to control stresses at depth.

The term "potash" denotes a family of minerals and compounds of potassium, containing greatly varying percentages of that element. In commercial usage, most of the potash products are used in agriculture, where they are used to furnish potassium, one of the three basic elements for plant growth; the other two being nitrogen and phosphorus. Potassium's contribution to plant life is principally as a stalk strengthener, and if soils can no longer supply this basic element, then crop failure is inevitable without nutrition supplied from fertilization. While agriculture uses some 95 per cent of the potash produced, other industries require highly refined potash, for the manufacture of soaps, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, insecticides, photographic film, and other products. Until the mid-nineteenth century, world agriculture had three options related to the potash content of soils: 1) crop rotation and pasturing to attempt to minimize the loss of potash in harvesting, 2) abandoning depleted and exhausted soils (part of the reason for the vast migration of populations in Europe and Asia), and 3) burning forests for the use of the ashes, and concentrating the nutritional value by boiling the ashes in large kettles, for "pot - ash". With the discovery in the mid 1800's and exploitation of potash from underground deposits in Germany, the beginning of the modern potash industry was established, but American potash requirements remained substantially dependent on German production until the 1920's, when oil drilling in the Permian Basin of New Mexico

Urban agglomerations such as Greater Lyon demand intelligent underground solutions for the freedom of mobility of its inhabitants. The city and metropolitan area of Lyon provide an example of a city strategy adapted to the changing needs due to demographic and living standard trends. The Lyon Metro Line B with a length of 2.4 km is one of the strategic projects with regard to city planning and future mobility. The paper will highlight on this special area of application in singular diverse geology with sophisticated mechanized tunnelling technology.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

The usual method employed to determine the direction of flow in a connecting airway in advance is to conduct a survey between the two existing nodes being connected by means of the new airway. It is then assumed that airflow will take place from the node with higher pressure to the node with lower pressure. The purpose of this paper is to examine this direction-of-flow problem -- using properties of the system characteristic curve for a two-terminal network -- and specify some conditions that ensure that flow will take from the higher-pressure node to the lower-pressure node. It is concluded that the only requirement is that all characteristic curves of fans in the network should be strictly decreasing. Five numerical examples illustrate some important properties of the direction-of-flow problem.

INTRODUCTION The Metro Rail Project is approximately a 20-mile initial portion of Southern California's planned 150-mile transit network and will provide transit service to the dense population and employment centers within the Los Angeles regional core. The Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) has defined, as the first segment, a 4.4-mile five station rail line, which extends from the yard and shop area near Union Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. Design packages are completed; utilities are currently being relocated; demolition is underway; early construction contracts have been awarded; and construction has started. This paper will describe the current status of the Metro Rail design and construction, after first briefly reviewing its history, objectives, and main components. PROJECT HISTORY The California State Legislature created the SCRTD in 1964 with a legislative mandate to design, construct, and operate a rapid transit system within the Los Angeles County area. To obtain the monies required to support this program, in June, 1974, Proposition 5 was passed by a solid majority, allowing a portion of state gasoline taxes to be used for rapid transit development. This measure provided a local source of funds for SCRTD to begin its rail rapid transit development program in Los Angeles.

Computer models of metallurgical circuits are extensively utilised in design, and prediction of overall plant separation performance. As always, in the final optimised flowsheet design there is a compromise between the recovery of values and grade of the circuit output. This paper mathematically examines various circuit options for the generation of a heavy mineral concentrate from a generic mineral sands wet concentrator plant. Based on data derived from testwork, any particular mineral sand has a unique release curve describing the separation performance of the heavy mineral suite. Models are constructed that combine particular stage output streams as feed to other stages in various configurations. The ramifications of each option are discussed and reasons why one particular option is selected over the others examined.

Central Mexico's mining districts, opened centuries ago during the Spanish conquest, still form the backbone of metal mining in the country today. Beginning at Chihuahua City, the Second Mexican Mining Rail Excursion traveled southeast from camp to camp through this major mining area to Taxco. Improved exploration, exploitation, and beneficiation methods have permitted continuous mining of many old deposits, and led to the discovery of new ones. Minerals not sought by early miners-lead, zinc, copper, and fluorite-now contribute substantially to mining activity in central Mexico. Of Mexico's five physiographic provinces, the rail excursion passed through two: the Mesa Central, and the Sierra Madre Occidental. The Mesa Central province is a wide tableland with basin and range topography, containing important base metal deposits. Mining in this region is primarily of limestone replacement ore bodies. Massive deposits form horizontal mantos or vertical chimneys. In northern Zacatecas, the Santa Eulalia and Naica mines demonstrated this character. The Sierra Madre Occidental lies west of Mesa Central in northern states, then widens to almost the entire width of the country from outside Mexico City to the southern border. The area consists of volcanic beds, several kilometers thick. These intermediate volcanics are primarily andesitic, of Tertiary age. Resting on older strata of adjoining physiographic divisions, the volcanic beds are overlain by a thick series of acidic flows and tuffs. Economic mineralization in the Sierra Madre Occidental is vein-type, primarily gold and silver. Mines at Fresnillo, Guanajuato, Pachuca, and Taxco contribute to the claim that this region is the center for precious metals in Mexico. A third type of mineralization, contact metamorphic deposits, is commercial at Santa Eulalia. First Stop, Santa Eulalia Mine tours began with the Santa Eulalia unit, located 25 km east of Chihuahua City. Mining in the region dates back to the early 1700s. The oxidation zone was worked until 1790, but mining declined until Asarco arrived in the early 1900s, building a selective flotation plant for treating primary sulfides. Asarco still owns 34% of Industrial Minera Mexico, S.A. (IMMSA), operator of the Santa Eulalia mine. Santa Eulalia currently has a milling capacity of 850 t/d. The San Antonio and Buena Tierra mines provide feedstock. Head grades at San Antonio, the mine participants toured, average 80-120 g/t of silver, 1.5-4.5% lead, 4-16% zinc, and 0.1-2.5% copper. Tin and vanadium were also recovered between 1930 and 1940. Estimated proven and probable reserves total about 7.6 Mt, although 1.8 Mt of reserves are located in areas of high water pressure and volume, which makes extraction difficult. Water is a significant production problem at the San Antonio mine. In one area, an AX drill hole encountered 2.6 m3/min (700 gal/min) at a pressure of 2.5 kPa. A sulfur concrete technology has been developed by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, in which chemically modified sulfur is utilized with suitable mineral aggregates to produce construction materials which are resistant to corrosion by acids and salts. This report presents a summary of the basic technology and results of testing the materials under actual operating conditions in 50 corrosive environments in 40 commercial plants. After 4 years of testing, there was essentially no evidence of material degradation or loss of strength. Regular concrete materials were attacked and in some cases completely destroyed under the same conditions. Testing is continuing to establish ultimate longevity and durability of the sulfur concretes. The materials are finding widespread applications in metallurgical, chemical, and fertilizer processing plants.

When a solid-liquid mixture is conveyed through a pipe,' four hydrodynamic conditions may develop depending upon the properties of the transporting medium, the properties of the transported material, the properties of the pipeline and the flow characteristics. They are classified as homogeneous flow, heterogeneous flow, intermediate flow and saltation. Heterogeneous flow, which is the subject of the present analysis, occurs when solid particles are coarse, of high density, and the mean velocity of the flow is relatively low, such that the combination allows the establishment of a pronounced concentration gradient in the cross-section of the pipe. In this type of system the suspended matter does not change the rheological properties of the conveying fluid, and solid and fluid phases behave somewhat separately. In recent years much work has been directed toward gaining more insight into the hydrodynamics of heterogeneous flow (1,2,3,4,5,) However, almost all knowledge obtained is empirical in nature and limited in scope. Much effort has been extended to collect experimental information on the energy losses associated with systems of slurry flow (6-13) The work of Durand and Condolios(14,15) represents one of the most extensive experimentations in this field. Through systematic test runs, the effects of the major flow-parameters were studied one at a time. From the results, they concluded empirically that:

Calcium oxide, with its ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, is emerging to become an important tool in carbon management. Calcium oxide can be used reversibly to capture carbon dioxide in situ and then be regenerated to produce a pure stream of carbon dioxide ready for sequestration; the Zero Emission Coal Alliance technology utilizes this property of calcium oxide to generate emissions-free electric power from coal. The reaction of calcium oxide with carbon dioxide resulting in thermodynamically stable carbonate is well understood; however, the efficiency of this reaction is limited by the diffusion of gases through bulk calcium oxide and through a layer of carbonate formed on the surface. In addition, the regeneration of calcium oxide is an endothermic reaction and is favored at high temperatures. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to address the diffusion limitation, a thin layer of calcium oxide, supported on a high surface area material, is studied thermogravimetrically to demonstrate the physical adsorption of carbon dioxide on calcium oxide. The adsorption is to take place at temperatures lower than required to form calcium carbonate.

The International Conference on Sustainable Development Indicators in the Mineral Industries(SDIMI 2003) was held May 21-23, 2003 on the island of Milos, Greece. The objective of this international conference was to assist the mining and minerals industries in their global transition to sustainable development. The main theme of the conference was the development, monitoring and assessment of sustainable development criteria for mineral operations. Emerging technologies were also presented that can assist in the development of criteria and performance indicators.

Approximately six hundred air sample measurements were taken at several U.S. underground metal/nonmetal mines in 1998 and 1999. This air sampling effort was organized by the Nevada Mining Association to evaluate mining conditions and to evaluate the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) Proposed Rule on Diesel Particulate Matter Exposure of Underground Metal and Non-metal Miners. MSHA’s proposed air sampling method, NIOSH Method 5040, was tested under controlled conditions and under normal mining conditions. Unfortunately, NvMA sampling results have indicated that carbonaceous rock dust, oil mists and even cigarette smoking create severe sampling interference problems for NIOSH 5040.The main conclusion was that NIOSH 5040 did not distinguish between DPM and other airborne carbon particulate. Thus, it is not a reliable method of accurately and unequivocally measuring DPM in underground metal/nonmetal mines.

Arsenic-gold bearing ores are used as a flux in smelting or leached out to extract gold. To decrease arsenic content in processed materials and to break up the lattice to free the gold, raw materials are roasted. This article analyses the results of laboratory and pilot testing of dissociating and oxidizing roasting of gold-arsenic bearing concentrates. During the dissociation roasting under vacuum arsenic is sublimated into elemental and sulfide forms. The process allows to minimize the negative influence on the environment but requires costly engineering solutions. Roasting in a neutral medium or with limited quantity of oxygen in the gaseous phase makes it possible to sublimate arsenic in the form of oxides and sulfides and may be carried out in the autogeneous mode in fluid bed furnaces. If oxidizing roasting of the concentrates is done in the presence of soda, practically all arsenic and sulfur form water-soluble compounds and remain in cinder.

The existing Central City Tunnel was built primarily in the 1930s with a small portion as old as the 1880s. It conveys stormwater in downtown Minneapolis. It is a 4,400-ft long tunnel located 80 feet underground. The Central City Tunnel has experienced surcharging and surface overflows during heavy rainfall events. This paper presents the details of tunnel and shaft design for the new Central City Parallel Tunnel to mitigate the overflows. The design considered hydraulics and geotechnical engineering for the structural geologic conditions including the weak Saint Peter Sandstone and overlying strong Platteville Limestone. Ground conditions resulted in tunnel designs including large flat-back box tunnels and unique cathedral-shaped tunnel sections.

Barrick Gold’s Bullfrog underground mine, near Beatty, NV, was established as an after-thought to the main open pit. As open pit ore dwindles, the underground mining became increasingly more important as an ore source, and to the overall economics of the project. This situation is similar to many other mines. Today, there is a move towards underground mining in the United States. There are inherent problems in starting and operating underground mines in the shadow of any open-pit operation. Several attempts were made at the Bullfrog Mine for productive increases. Some were successful, while others were not.
