It has been reported in the literature that there is a substantial economic incentive for removing sulfur from coal. Therefore, U. s. Steel initiated an investigation to determine the feasibility of lowering the sulfur content of its Pittsburgh-seam coal. Preliminary crushing and washability studies on a representa-tive sample indicated that substantial sulfur reductions could be attained. Figure 1 shows the effect of the top size of a given coal sample on the sulfur content of the float-l.45 specific-gravity fraction of coal. At a top size of 3 inches, the raw-coal sulfur content of 2.32 percent was reduced to 1.64 percent. Crushing to a top size of 20 mesh reduced the raw-coal sulfur to 1.25 percent. Below a top size of one inch, the sulfur content decreased rapidly as top size was decreased. Figure 2 shows the effect of specific gravity of separation on pyritic sulfur. Normally this coal has an organic-sulfur content of approximately 1 percent. As expected, pyritic sulfur was reduced as the separating gravity was lowered for all the various size fractions shown. An ongoing problem for industry in Korea is effective removal of heavy metals from and safe disposal of spent power plant fly ash. This research endeavor attempts to develop selective separation of Ni from leach liquor using a selective chemical precipitation method. The research was conducted by changing two variables, the pH and the concentration of ions in solution. The effect of other ions present in the system on the separation efficiency of Ni species was also investigated by adjusting OH and NH3 concentrations. In the pH range of 7-9, the chemical precipitation method produced a high yield of Ni by precipitation from the fly ash leach liquor.

Marine phosphorite deposits occur in Brazil, in the Bambui Group of late Precambrian or Early Cambrian age. The phosphorite is laminated, isoclinally folded, and is composed of black, elongated apatite pellets and quartz grains cemented by quartz and muscovite. Abundant, narrow quartz veinlets cut through the rock at right angles to the elongation direction of the pellets. The phosphorite is 0 to 80 meters thick and contains 5 to 30 percent P205. The deposit is elongate towards the northeast, and the central, thickest, and richest part is bounded by faults. Measured reserves are about 250 million tonnes that average about 13 percent P205. Preliminary testing indicates that grinding, scrubbing, and desliming will produce a material usable for fertilizer manufacture at a cost competitive with imported phosphate fertilizers.

Geologists searching for carbonate rocks suitable for chemical uses traditionally have relied on extensive laboratory testing in order to locate strata or zones that might be suitable for mining. However, when considering the significant time and costs involved in sampling and performing chemical analyses, any exploration technique whereby fewer samples and analyses are needed would be of great value. In other words, if the exploration geologist could "zero-in" on select areas, considerable time and money could be saved. In general, the major-element chemistry of carbonate rocks is determined by the abundance of the minerals present. CaO occurs with CO2 as the mineral calcite, which is the primary mineral comprising allochems, matrix and sparry cement; MgO is found in high-magnesium calcite (many calcite fossil species contain appreciable amounts of MgO in solid solution), dolomite, and chlorite; iron occurs in pyrite and in limonitic stylolites, as well as in chloritic and glauconitic clay minerals; materials containing abundant Si02 are microcrystalline quartz (chest) silt-sized quartz, and clay minerals; and Al203 is found primarily in illitic, kaolinitic, and chloritic clay minerals. The presence or absence of these minerals determines the chemical composition of the carbonate rooks.

In longwall mining, the progressive caving of the roof allows stored energy to dissipate over an extended time. However, in some cases, the roof strata above the longwall panel are unusually strong and do not break with the movement of the working face. Instead, the roof material bridges over the expanse of the longwall, forming an unstable beam. Later, when this beam breaks, the stored energy can release suddenly, causing a seismic event to propagate to surrounding mine workings. The focus of this paper is to estimate the size of beams that form over longwall panels to the seismic energy recorded by the mine. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, which is then released upon strata failure to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies. Gravitational energy is shown to be the main driving factor in energy release, except for the beams with low heights. Analyses allow the determination of beam characteristics based on seismic data. The analysis is refined using swelling factor to compare various beam drop heights. The models show an increase in seismic magnitude for higher drop heights. However, the actual data provided by the Buchanan mine displays a decrease in seismic magnitude with increasing drop height, indicating that energy is dissipated into the broken gob material as drop height increases.

Acid rain legislation as proposed by President Bush [1], if enacted, will immediately refocus current thinking on the economic decision-making as related to coal preparation facilities. Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. In anticipation of this need, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Ohio Coal Development Office, EPRI and others are sponsoring research in several areas of coal preparation, and coal plant designers are beginning to consider more innovative techniques as they configure their flowsheets for plants of the future. In 1995, the United States Congress abolished the Bureau of Mines in the US Department of Interior. But Congress preserved the safety and health research functions being performed at the Pittsburgh and Spokane Research Centers. These functions were transitionally housed in the US Department of Energy before permanently merging with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Department of Health and Human Services, in October 1996. Since the rnerger of the former Bureau of Mines with NIOSH, there has been an active evaluation of ongoing research activities, significant interaction with stakeholders, and the development of a process leading to "data-informed" priority setting. This paper reviews the current surveillance information concerning the level of injury and disease from mining work and discusses how research priorities are evolving to improve the contribution of research to the prevention of injury and disease.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. The results of a recent study on the influence of continuous and conventional mining techniques on the size consist and wash- ability characteristics of coal are presented. Eight samples, four each from continuous and conventional mining sections were collected. Each sample was screened in seven size fractions, and each size fraction was totally fractionated at five gravities. The data thus collected was statistically examined for the influence significance of mining techniques, size, and gravity on the quality of the mined product. The paper presents the sample collection method, data gathering and analysis procedures, and major conclusions. The study revealed that there are pronounced differences in the products from the two mining systems and that conventional mining yielded a better product in terms of size-consist, and yield, ash, and sulfur in both the raw and washed products. The results of the study are significant in regard to consideration of resource utilization and conservation, and environmental impacts.

INTRODUCTION Underground siting of nuclear power stations is drawing increasing attention in various parts of the world. Scandinavian countries took the early lead in this field because of their experience in the design and construction of underground hydroelectric stations and industrial plants, and because they have near-surface rock formations which are ideally suited for hosting large underground caverns. The world's first underground nuclear facilities were built in Norway (Halden) and Sweden (Agesta) and were commissioned in 1959 and 1963 respectively. Figure 1 summarizes the main features of these and two other small-scale European facilities. (1-4) American utilities and regulators are also for a variety of reasons assessing the benefits and penalties of underground siting. A recent study by Sandia Laboratories (contracted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) focussed on identifying potential safety benefits of underground siting. (5) Although the study concluded that underground plants would have improved containment for some accidents, as well as better external protection, NRC, in assessing the overall benefits and penalties, decided not to impose mandatory underground siting for nuclear stations. There are basically two commonly used methods of drying washed coal. They are mechanical drying (sometimes called dewatering) and thermal drying. The common methods of mechanical drying are by using vibrating screens, cross flow screens, sieve screens or Vor-Siv, vacuum filters and centrifugal dryers. With thermal drying, the common types include direct fired fluid bed, rotary drum, flash or suspension, vertical tray or cascade continuous carrier or vibrating fluid bed dryers and hollow screw dryers. In the past, it has more or less been a general rule that any time the total product is being washed, both mechanical and thermal drying was required. The reason for this was that a product moisture of 3 to 4% was required and thermal drying was and is the only practical method by which this can be accomplished. With the advent of air pollution controls and the ever increasing concentration on dust elimination, a 3 to 4% moisture product is no longer practical in either the preparation plant or in the processing plants which utilize the coal. Under the new standards, it is desirable to have a product with a 6.5 to 7% surface moisture. With this moisture range, dusting, due to handling, will bc kept at a minimum.

Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. The growing environmental awareness and the need for providing social service to the community, urge the primary sector companies (such as mining) to find new solutions, by adjusting their operations with the special, local conditions and meeting everyday problems in practical ways. We hereby present a real case of re-design of an open pit, closed-bench type industrial minerals (clay) excavation, for the purpose of rehabilitation and utilisation as a water reservoir. The potential use of rainfall water was studied on the basis of covering the irrigation needs and improving the living standard of the neighbouring farmers and also as a project or recreational development of the area by shaping a wetland. The experience from the project progress and the reservoir use has been positive to date and the reclamation plan seems to have the acceptance of the local community.

Four areas have been identified as favorable drill-site locations for determining whether or not a suspected prophyry copper deposit exists in Rowe Canyon, Nevada. Favorability is based on the similarity to a deposit model constructed from geochemical data for the porphyry copper deposit near Ely. Favorability is defined as the coincident number of positive anomalies for the elements zinc, silver, arsenic, antimony and iron. The favorable areas coincide with an observed magnetic high and areas in proximity to major faults.

Although the foundation of a unified treatment of fluid flow in variably saturated porous media was established more than seventy years ago, no serious attempt was made to develop it until the early 1970's. Ever since, a number of unsaturated-saturated numerical models have been reported in the literature. However, none of these models have treated multidimensional, multiphase flow in deforming media, parts of which may undergo extensive secondary fracturing. A situation such as this is not uncommon in coal mining operations in which the longwall method of extraction is employed. The present model has been structured to handle such physical systems. This paper presents the mathematical formulation, the numerical algorithm, and a further validation and evaluation of the modified model. The model treats a multiphase flow in a three- dimensional regime and handles mining excavations of complex and changing configurations.

The SX-EW operation at Morenci includes three electrowinning tankhouses. Stainless cathode blanks require the use of insulating plastic edge strips, which typically have a service life of 1-2 years, therefore, regular replacement of edge strips is a fact of life in tankhouse operations. The largest tankhouse, Central, converted from starter sheets to stainless steel cathode blanks in 1999. During the first year of stainless blank operation at Central Tankhouse, the initial installation edge strips started failing at accelerated rates and there was a sudden need to replace edge strips and repair between 350 and 400 cathode blanks per day. This paper details the design and building of cathode repair shops at the Morenci tankhouses, including choice of equipment and layout design. The objective was to increase efficiency through the use of cathode handling equipment and flow of material.

Introduction In view of the continuing depletion of natural resources, requirements for energy conservation, plant optimization and hazardous waste management, and environmental consciousness, recycling and secondary recovery of materials are being developed with increasing interest Many secondary recovery processes are being developed that apply mineral processing technology. Gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation have all emerged as explicit methods for recovering residual values from various process streams and hazardous constituents from waste streams. Recently, a technique for concentrating metallics has been successfully reintroduced. The concept of the alternating magnetic field eddy-current separator was developed over a century ago using rudimentary electromagnets (Patent 400317 issued to Thomas Edison on March 26, 1889). Widespread acceptance was, however, hindered by high costs, marginal results and poor economic incentives for secondary recovery. With the recent increased interest in secondary recovery and the development of high-energy rare earth permanent magnets, the eddy-current separator has now gained prominent acceptance. The separation forces imparted by an eddy current separator are the function of the magnetic field intensity and the alternating frequency of the magnetic field. The evolution of permanent magnets has provided a cost effective alternative for the generation of high-intensity magnetic fields. High-energy rare earth permanent magnets have substantially reduced the capital and operating costs over the electromagnetic circuits employed in antecedent eddy-current separators. Specifically, in recent years, the strength of permanent magnets has increased several fold with neodymium-boron-iron rare earth magnets now providing an energy product of 35 million gauss-oersted. Figure 1 shows the evolution in the strength of permanent magnets. The development of these rare earth magnets has led to the design of circuits possessing a magnetic force an order of magnitude greater than that of conventional permanent magnetic circuits. The eddy-current separator has been successfully applied in several metal sorting and recovery operations. Most common is the sorting of metal from shredded automobile scrap and municipal waste. With the advent of high-frequency, high-intensity magnetic fields, the separator has advanced to the point where it has direct application in the beneficiation of fine sized metals. Relatively fine sized (-1/4 in.) metal bearing slags and spent foundry casting sands as well as precious metal hearing electronic scrap demonstrate excellent metallurgical response to the eddy-current separator, and applications have progressed to finer materials and more selective separations. Theory Electrical currents are induced in all conductors when exposed to an alternating magnetic field. The induced current generates a magnetic field in the conductor that opposes that of the alternating magnetic field. Figure 2, is a schematic illustration of generated eddy currents. In this particular example, the alternating magnetic field is produced by a series of permanent magnets mounted on the circumference of a rotor. The permanent magnets have alternating polarity. As the rotor revolves, an alternating magnetic field is produced, and the rate of revolution determines the frequency of the alternating magnetic field. When a conductor, such as a metallic disc in the illustration, is placed in the alternating magnetic field, a closed loop current flow occurs. The current loop in the conductor produces a magnetic field that is a mirror image of the alternating magnetic field. At any point in time, the induced magnetic field in the conductor directly opposes the alternating magnetic field. This opposition of magnetic fields produces an instantaneous repulsion in the conductor. The conductor is consequently repelled from the rotor. The alternating magnetic field has no effect on nonmetallic materials as they pass through the magnetic field and discharge the rotor in a natural trajectory. [ ]

Introduction The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and the Institution of Mining Engineers organized the Third International Mine Ventilation Congress held in Harrogate, England. Sixty-one papers were presented and about 300 participants registered. About 30% of the participants came from Great Britain, 20% from South Africa, and about 5% each came from Australia, Canada, China, France, US, and West Germany. The remainder of the participants came from 18 other countries. Eleven of the papers presented dealt with methane, three with diesel exhausts, four with dust, four with radioactivity, 18 with heat, and 15 dealt with main and auxiliary ventilation. Six of the papers dealt with mine fires, which is a boundary region between main ventilation and gas concerns. Ventilation Congress proceedings are available. See ME, December 1984, page 1687, New Books page. With CH4 and radioactivity topics, the Australians dominated since they are becoming large coal and uranium producers. With diesel exhausts, the most important problem in highly mechanized mines, the North Americans were prominent. The South Africans, working in 90% SiO2 in their gold deposits, were preeminent in presentations on dust. They also led in topics related to heat, joined by the West Germans whose mines are getting deeper. In main and auxiliary ventilation, Great Britain and West Germany provided the majority of contributions. Methane The large number of methods for the precalculation of CH4 liberation in longwall mining all contain three elements: gas content of the coal, gas emitting zone (or influence zone of face), and degree of gas emission. Determination of the gas content, commonly accomplished by taking coal samples, does not pose much difficulty. But this is not the case with the other two factors. Most existing approaches rely on rock mechanics observations. Some only rely on intuition or speculation. The West German coal mines conducted a large research project between 1977 and 1982, in which gas pressures around longwall faces were measured. Gas pressures and gas contents can be related. Therefore, influence zone and degree of gas emission can be determined simultaneously. The precalculation of CH4 liberation in room-and-pillar mining is simpler. Since foot and hanging walls remain essentially intact, gas pressure distribution and gas flow can be calculated using hydraulics equations. A key to these calculations is permeability. A group of Australian researchers reported that the permeabilities of rock under three dimensional stress differs from rock under destressed conditions. This fact was known, but no systematic observations existed. These were provided. Methane drainage has been practiced for more than 40 years. It is used with great success in longwall operations. Some of the West Germans think that methane drainage from the footwall is neglected. Under certain geological conditions, they claim this is as important as drainage from the hanging wall. A research project was presented in support of this claim. Considerable efforts have existed for more than 10 years to use methane drainage in room-and-pillar mining. A paper described the accomplishments of Consolidation Coal Co. Since coal and rock are not fractured as much as in longwall mining, gas transport takes place by the slow diffusion from micropores into the cleats. Then, it is transported by laminar flow along the cleats until a drainage borehole or the mine workings are reached. Boreholes about 300 m (1000 ft) long can reduce the gas content of a band of coal 100-m (330-ft) wide by 50% in one year. A paper from India described methane drainage from gob areas. A French paper reported that especially high methane concentrations can be drained from gob areas if the face ventilation is descensional. Methane buoyancy and ventilating pressures compensate each other, and little air dilution by leakage takes place. Another French paper described a newly developed gas and air velocity monitoring system making use of a microcomputer. Four papers on methane dealt with gas outbursts. Two Australian contributions described the problems encountered with CH,-CO2 mixtures and the attempts to solve them with drainage boreholes having 10 to 20-kPa (1.5 to 3-psi) suction pressures. A Hungarian paper described problems and attempts to reduce the risks of gas outbursts in Hungary. Prediction of gas outbursts in coal seams was the focus of an English paper. Federal and State sulfur oxide emission and ambient air quality regulations have been implemented to fulfill the requirements of the Federal Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970. Primary and secondary air quality standards have been established at levels considered necessary to assure the protection of the health and welfare of the public. Standards of performance under this Act have been established to control the rate of sulfur oxide emissions from individual sources so as to protect and to improve the quality of the Nation's air. The new source standards of performance were made rigorous for large coal burning stationary sources. This has had a severe impact on the electric utilities that operate the coal fired steam electric plants which are the largest consumers of the Nation's coal production. States have taken different approaches in State Implementation Plans (SIPS) as approved by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, have chosen to permit moderate SO2 emission rates from existing sources which are not in critical air basins. All are required to meet primary and secondary air quality standards and to limit sulfur oxide emissions from new large stationary sources to a minimum of 1.2 LBS of S02/MMBTU fired. This re- quires a fuel sulfur percentage of about 0.7 for a 12,000 BTU/lb coal. In an effort to develop strategies and technologies to conform to performance standards while continuing and hopefully expanding the utilization of the Nation's coal supply, the electric utilities, the Federal and State regulatory agencies, and other industries and government agencies are considering several alternatives. 1. Natural low sulfur coal 2. Flue gas desulfurization - (FGD) non-regenerative and regenerative 3. Coal gasification 4. Liquefaction and solvent refined coal 5. Fluidized bed combustion 6. Chemical coal cleaning 7. Physical coal cleaning Of these options, only the first and the last can be considered to be widely used in full commercial practice at this time. FGD has certainly demonstrated technical and operating feasibility and is close to being in full commercial practice but it remains to be seen if the large systems under construction are economically and environmentally optimum.

This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.
