Cementitious seals are made of foamed cements with strength ranging from 100 to 600 psi. These cementitious seals are usually used at locations where the seal will be subjected to some convergence, assuming that this material can absorb entry closure without compromising the structural integrity of the seal. Prior to 2006, Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) conducted full-scale tests on various cementitious seals designed to meet or exceed the 20-psi horizontal static load requirements of the old 30 CFR1 75.335. Both hydrostatic and dynamic loading tests were conducted. The structural response (pressure and displacement readings) obtained from these tests were recorded. The stability of the cementitious seal is based on balancing the load applied to the face of the seal from the explosion against the shearing resistance at the seal/rock interface. Therefore, the properties of the seal/rock interface, such as stiffness, cohesion, friction, etc. are critical to determine the stability of a cementitious seal. These properties are usually assumed by the researchers in their models. This paper emphasizes the importance of having the correct properties of seal/rock interface in the numerical modeling. FLAC 3D models were developed to simulate Celuseal2 cementitious seals subjected to both hydrostatic and dynamic loadings. Using the hydrostatic and dynamic loading test data conducted at LLEM, the static and dynamic properties of the seal/rock interface were back calculated. The FLAC 3D models showed good agreement with the test results.

Variations in ore grade, mineralogy, and copper pricing structures over the life of the Inspiration mine have mandated many modifications to the treatment methods to maximize process economics. In the 1970's, copper prices generally declined, while inflation, wages, and interest rates increased. A metallurgical treatment route had to be developed for this continuing economic climate which would be capable of minimizing labor, energy, and capital cost requirements. After many years of development, the patented "Ferric Cure" process was introduced to satisfy these requirements. This dump leach process for treatment of mixed oxide/sulfide ore includes: strict mineralogical control of ore placed for leaching, controlled leach pad construction, solution saturation and curing of the pads with higher acid concentrations, and, finally, rinsing of the cured pads for removal of dissolved copper. Leach solutions, high in sulfuric acid during the cure application and low in sulfuric acid during the rinse, contain sufficient ferric iron to enhance the leaching of chalcocitic sulfide minerals.

Developments during the past few years have brought coal-based composite fuels to commercial readiness. During the next few years, composite fuels will become available from a number of suppliers. Potential users must evaluate the combustion properties of these fuels to determine equipment and operating changes required for their use. Most work to date has been done with boiler applications. However, many potential non-boiler applications exist in the metals and minerals industry. These applications require specific evaluations appropriate for the processes involved.

The haulage of muck from mines was first illustrated by Georg Agricola in De Re Metallica in the year 1556. In many of his ancient wood cuts he showed a crude car running on wooden rails. These wheels had no flanges. There were four pins sticking down from the car to guide it along the rails. Eventually they made the wheels of cast iron with flanges on them. In England, coal was hauled from the pit mouth to the nearest river or canal in "wains", or wagons, running on the common highways. These wains carried one chaldron of coal, weighing 2500 lbs and it took six horses to haul these wains over the atrocious roads of that day. Somebody, about 1760, invented a cast iron rail. These were cast iron troughs, 4 ft long laid on wooden sleepers. With these iron rails they found that one horse could do the work of six. But this U-shaped groove trapped all the dirt and grit. Somebody had the brilliant idea of attaching a flange to the inside of the wheel and from then on the rails were of timber protected against wear by a strap of iron. Recent experience over extensive areas of the Basin and Range Province has demonstrated the importance of the basin's (valley's) geology and geomorphology in locating large quantities of good-quality aggregate. First, a geologic map depicting basic geomorphic-geologic units in a valley is made in the office from aerial photography. Next, derivative maps are made from geologic maps and field-derived information such as parent rock type, source area and depositional environment, relationship to adjacent deposits, and Quaternary geologic history. Studying the derivative maps leads to selection of test sites for potential deposits of high-quality aggregates. Subsequent field studies provide more detailed information about geologic processes and samples for laboratory testing. Combining all information allows the characterization of aggregate potential of very large areas. Favorable areas can be further tested. This phased approach has proven to be cost effective. The methodology used in mapping and characterizing basinfill deposits is applicable over much of the western United States. Map units were developed by focusing on the predominate geomorphic process, grain size, cementation, and relative age. The resulting functional map units are of use to engineers and planners. This study led to many conclusions, including the fact that the best quality basinfill aggregates are found in selected alluvial fan deposits and Pleistocene lakeshore deposits. The best quality aggregates are derived from Paleozoic carbonate and quartzitic parent materials that can also provide high-quality crushed-rock aggregates.

Today's mining industry faces many challenges. Perhaps none is more important than the challenge of improving our industry's public image. Opinion polls document public concern for a clean and safe environment. As part of that public, the mining industry must share that goal. The public is now the most powerful environmental group in society. And the public wants the environment to be protected. In May 1989, Edgar S. Woolard, chairman of DuPont, spoke to the American Chamber of Commerce. He said that industry's continued existence "requires that we excel in environmental performance and that we enjoy the non-objection - indeed even the support of the people and governments in the societies where we operate." In effect, Woolard called for "corporate environmentalism." He defined it as an "attitude and a performance commitment that places environmental stewardship fully in line with public desires and expectations." Environmentalism is no longer a fringe activity, but rather is now clearly in the mainstream. How can we meet public expectations and improve our image as an industry? One of the best ways is to plan, design and operate our mine facilities with environmental responsibility and social concern. The Mineral Hill Mine provides a good case study of a facility that has made this commitment. The project used an inter-disciplinary, multiagency task force, citizen advisory groups and engineering and design considerations. As a result, Mineral Hill achieved cost-effective permitting. At the same time, the operation demonstrated effective "corporate environmentalism."

A compact 4.87 m (16 ft) diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM) is capable of boring a 12.2 m (40 ft) radius curve while gripping horizontally, or vertically, as may be required for the excavation of turnouts. The machine's 5.0 m (16.5 ft) length and a patented machine structure allows steering while boring without causing harmful eccentric loads. An extremely stiff thrust system, rigid front and rear grippers, and the torsional stiffness of a front end electric cutterhead drive combine to create superior machine stability and boring efficiency. A 2.2 m (7.2 ft) diameter prototype, complete with a soft ground shield attachment, was used successfully on a tunnel project in Scotland.

The Endako Mine is an open-pit molybdenum mine located in the north central region of British Columbia, Canada, about 960 km (600 road miles) north of Vancouver. Production for the latter part of 1992 was expected to averaged 63.5 kt/d (70,000 stpd). Of that amount, 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) was the mill feed. This production is achieved with five 11.5 to 14.5 m3 (15 to 19 cu yd) electric shovels, six Euclid R190 and two Unit Rig M120 diesel-electric haul trucks, and three 320 mm (12.25 in.) electric rotary drills. There are three ore zones delineated into pit areas: the Endako, Denak East and Denak West. Present mill feed source is the southeast stage of the Endako Pit. Stripping is carried out in the south wall stage also of the Endako Pit. The mine high grade aggregate is reduced in the primary and secondary crushing circuits before processing in conventional RM-BM-flotation circuits. The majority of the molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) is roasted on site to produce technical grade molybdenum oxide (M003). A portion is further refined and treated to yield a 99.9% pure MoS2 product.

An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

The authors benchmarked the integrated finite-volume code MULTIFLO against the analytical solution of Philip et al. (1989) for cylindrical underground openings. They found that the numerical simulation of dripping threshold flux was consistently higher than the analytical solution for rectangular and unstructured grids. The magnitude of this error was proportional to the alpha parameter characterizing capillarity. This error may bias estimates of seepage into drifts for repository performance towards nonconservatism.

Plane failure in rock and soil slopes is usually caused by the intersection of a discontinuity plane with a slope face. Normally, these discontinuities are weaker than the surrounding intact rock and provide a surface along which movement can occur. The discontinuities are typically analyzed to determine the stability of a particular slope. One problem that arises when evaluating the stability of a planar feature is that the method for planar analysis is two-dimensional and has difficulty dealing with planes that are oblique to the slope face. Several researchers have stated in the past that planar failures are a special case of wedge failure. Wedge failures occur when two planar discontinuities intersect in an unfavorable manner. Sliding can occur along the intersection of the planes. Wedge failures are very common in rock slopes and can often be problematic. Wedge stability analysis methods are typically three-dimensional and can analyze planar features that are very oblique to the slope face. Wedge failure analysis can also be used to determine the stability of planar features with good success. One advantage to using wedge analysis over plane analysis is that a tension crack can be both non-vertical and oblique to the slope face in the wedge analysis. This allows the engineer to more closely match field conditions. It also negates the need for the engineer to have two separate software packages to analyze a single slope, saving both time and money.

INTRODUCTION Thermally induced fracture of rock is one of the oldest rock breakage techniques known to man. Primitive underground miners used fires to heat and crack rocks as early as the third century B.C. (Ref. 1). History aside, however, present-day tunneling and mining interests are reconsidering the use of modern heating units for rock fracture for some very good reasons. One of the most important advantages of many heating techniques is the lack of direct contact between the heating device and the rock. This means a lower wear rate relative to mechanical cutters, and no large reactant force to be supplied by the tunneling machine. In addition to avoiding physical contact, some heating systems (e.g., electron-beam guns and lasers) can deliver energy to a rock face much more intensely than can be conveniently handled mechanically. Thus, heating power densities of the order of lob to 107 watts/in.2 and greater can be achieved with high-power lasers. These high power levels allow much higher instantaneous penetration rates than can be achieved by mechanical cutting. Another advantage that accrues to some thermal techniques, such as, for example, surface spalling, is that the thermal fracture process works particularly well in certain rock types (e.g., granite) that are particularly hard to cut mechanically. Curved pulp lifters can provide improved discharge performance from SAG mills, especially for the coarser fraction of rocks in the discharge. They also can provide improved wear life of the pulp lifter, especially the base of the pulp lifter and diversion cone, over comparable straight radial pulp lifters. Current experience with curved pulp lifters and associated grates is covered including design issues and discharge performance for both the slurry and rock components of the discharge.

The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.

Introduction The cleaning of coal to remove sulfur and inorganic impurities has, in recent years, become an essential operation in any coal utilization process. US coals, on average, contain about 3% total sulfur, of which more than 60% is generally inorganic or pyritic sulfur. Existing technologies such as heavy media cycloning, selective agglomeration, and electrostatic separation have the potential for removing about 80% of the pyrite from coal (Khoury, 1981). In view of the large volumes of coal being used today, there exists a need for the development of new processes to further improve the separation of pyrite from coal. Colloidal particles in suspension possess surface charges that are related to the chemical composition of the particles. In aqueous suspensions, the surface charge is a function of pH. For coal-pyrite mixtures, it is possible, by an adjustment of the pH (also a function of polar molecules), to reach a state where the charge on coal is very close to zero, but the charge on pyrite is still substantial. The introduction of collector particles with a charge opposite that of the pyrite should then result in the selective flocculation of pyrite and collec¬tor. These flocculates should settle out much faster than coal and could be removed from the bottom of the settling column. This note discusses our preliminary observations of the effect of clay-based collector particles, especially bentonite, on the settling behavior of coal and pyrite. These experiments were conducted with a view to developing a new electrokinetic flocculation process for separation of coal-pyrite mixtures. Experimental The objective of the experiments was to determine the effects of clay-based additives on the settling rates of clean coal, pyrite, and coal-pyrite mixtures. Illinois Colchester (No. 2) coal was obtained after processing in an existing coal cleaning facility. This coal was reported to contain less than 0.3% pyritic sulfur, which was in the form of a fine powder with an average particle size of 5µm. Pyrite (of average particle size 5 µm) was also obtained from the same facility and reportedly contained less than 0.1% coal. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite in water were measured as a function of pH using a zetameter. The pH was adjusted by adding sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid to the suspensions. Sedimentation experiments were conducted in 50-mL glass cylinders, and settling rates were measured by noting the height of clear liquid above the settling front as a function of time. Settling behavior was also charted by periodically taking photographs of the system. The following systems were investigated: •a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of clean Illinois Colchester coal in 50 mL of water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite (Fisher, purified grade) ; • a slurry consisting of 2.5 g of pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite ; and • a slurry consisting of a mixture of 1.25 g clean coal and 1.25 g pyrite in 50 mL water of pH 6.0, with and without the addition of 0.5 g of bentonite. In addition, experiments were conducted with kaolinite (Bath, South Carolina) and alumina (Fisher, purified grade) as collector materials to verify the observed effects. Results and discussion Figure 1 shows the zeta potential values for the Illinois coal and pyrite as a function of pH. The zeta potentials of coal and pyrite decrease with increasing pH, changing from an initially positive value at low pH to a negative value at high pH. The point of zero charge (PZC) for the coal is at a pH of 6.2, while the PZC for pyrite occurs at a pH of 10.3.

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4'-11") and three 2.87 m (9'-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

Economic concentrations of potassium are essentially limited to thick, stratigraphic sections of marine evaporites. These deposits were precipitated through the evaporation of sea water in restricted epicontinental seas or in grabens related to continental margin rift systems. Following deposition the deposits were subjected to diagenesis and varying degrees of metasomatism and structural deformation. The origin and characteristics of potash deposits are easier to study and interpret than those of most ore deposits because the phase chemistry of the salt systems is known and the approximate composition of the ore-forming fluid (sea water) can be inferred with confidence. It is particularly helpful that the temperature and pressure of deposition approximated that of present earth surface conditions and the pertinent mineral assemblages can readily be duplicated in the laboratory. The study of these comparatively simple salt deposits provides examples of the practical advantages of understanding the genesis of an ore deposit. These observations, in turn, illustrate the importance of pursuing research on the more complicated magmatic, hydrothermal, and ground-water systems as a means to the more successful exploration for and exploitation of the deposits they have produced. It is the purpose of this paper, therefore, to discuss certain aspects of salt deposit geology as they contribute to exploration and mining through some understanding of ore formation. References to field examples and chemical relations in the salt systems are brief. All examples are more fully discussed, however, in the references cited.
