Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed the Saturn light that significantly improves illumination for roof-bolting machine operators while reducing glare. The existing roof-bolter lighting was the baseline and was compared to the Saturn at 100, 75 and 50 percent intensities. Discomfort glare and disability glare were measured by the De Boer rating scale and the Mars Letter Contrast sensitivity test, respectively. Thirty study participants were tested. Discomfort glare was reduced at least three levels with the Saturn luminaire. Visibility levels were four to 6.5 times better with the Saturn than with the baseline. The Saturn design is freely available for commercialization.

Mineable material is defined using cut-off grade either as geological or economic cut-off grade. Both geological and economic cut-off grade affects the output generated in an open-pit mining operation. It distinguishes the amount of ore sent to the mill for processing and waste to the dump. This consequently affects the overall profits generated from the operation hence the need for cut-off grade optimization. There are several mining parameters that are considered in a typical cut-off grade model. They include economic, geological, and operational parameters. They have a significant effect to influence the cut-off grade selected in mining operations at any given period. Some of the parameters are stochastic in nature by having a random probability distribution that may not be predicted precisely. When selecting cut-off grades in a mine operation, the mining engineers must consider the dynamic nature of the operational parameters in order to maximize the net present value of the project. Modifying Lane’s cut-off grade model which was developed in 1964 to incorporate the stochastic parameters in the approach helps improve the net present value as shown in the paper. The modified Lane’s approach is developed into a stochastic computer-aided application code-named NPVMining. Using NPVMining, selected stochastic parameters are considered in this exercise to show the effect on the output (net present value). The selected parameters (price and grade-tonnage) are varied by ± 10%. NPVMining has a graphical user interface that makes it easy to use and displays results in a user-friendly way. It gives the user the choice to manipulate the data depending on the study being undertaken or any other factor affecting the specific mine. This paper analyses the effect of each of the selected mining parameters on cut-off grade using NPVMining to show the significance of monitoring their variance.

Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is linited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized.

Annually, the U.S. coal industry generates and must dispose of over 200 million tons of coal refuse, expanding a major environmental problem. The purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing coal refuse as an aggregate in concrete. This paper reports on findings of the initial phases of a project to determine the viability of replacing traditional concrete blocks, used for under-ground ventilation stoppings, with refuse blocks. Refuse was collected from three active preparation plants in Eastern Kentucky and used as the primary aggregate for concrete cylinders. The refuse fell within ranges normally observed for size consist, moisture, and ash. Stress-strain analyses yielded compressive strengths of the refuse cylinders from 59% to 77% of the control group strengths. Low variability within groups while significant differences between groups were found. On-going determination of effects of weathering on the refuse cylinders is being conducted and will be completed in early 1995. The research results are favorable for the future direction of the overall project objectives.

Silver is an economically important component of many complex, massive sulfide ores. Current beneficiation for these ores is almost entirely by flotation. Silver recovery often is low, but little is known about the flotation behavior of the silver-bearing minerals. Floatability studies were conducted using silver-bearing tetrahedrite and lead-zinc ore. The effects of xanthate collector concentration, conditioning time, potentiostatic control of the mineral potential, and pH on mineral floatability were evaluated. The floatability of the silver-bearing minerals was shown to depend on collector concentration and mineral potential. The effect of controlling mineral potential during the flotation process is discussed.

Heavy metals contamination is an environmental problem at Army installations engaged in firearms training and munitions production. At these facilities, weathering and corrosion of expended munitions and leaching from wastewater lagoons, landfills and burn pits have resulted in heavy metals contamination of the soil. The principal metals encountered in firing-range soils are lead, copper and zinc. Cadmium and other metals, such as antimony, that are often incorporated in the munitions are sometimes seen in lesser concentrations. Mercury is associated with various propellants and, while present in much smaller concentrations, is of concern because of its acute toxicity. Chromium is primarily associated with plating operations. The transport of metals into groundwater has been confirmed at some locations, which has required treatment of the soil and groundwater at these sites. Certain treatment processes for contaminated soil produce metals-laden extracts, which also require treatment before reuse or disposal. Ion exchange is generally quite effective for removing metals from aqueous streams. However, resins are expensive and must be regenerated, and activated carbon is generally less effective for most metals and also requires regeneration. Therefore, alternative effective and economic sorbents are needed. Twelve sorbents were screened in initial batch testing. These included activated carbon, bark, chitosan, crown ether, corn cob, xanthate, clay (kaolinite and montmorillonite), peat moss, seaweed and reagent-grade zeolite (aluminosilicate, Sigma Product No. Z3125). Of these, zeolite demonstrated the highest capacity for Pb, Cr and Cd. For this reason, zeolite was selected for further testing in batch, kinetic and column studies. Materials and methods Zeolite. The zeolite used in the second-phase batch and column studies was obtained from a natural deposit of clinoptilolite-rich rock located in South Dakota (Rocky Ford SDH) (Desborough, 1996). Large blocks of the material were crushed and sieved into the following three particle size ranges: 0.5 to 1.0, 1.0 to 4.0 and 2.0 to 4.7 mm. This material demonstrates high structural stability in acidic solutions (pH 2.5) (Desborough 1996) and has a measured surface area of 30 m2/g. The measured total cation-exchange capacity (TCEC) was approximately 10 meq/100 g. This is well below what has been indicated for commercially available zeolite, which has been reported to be about 180 to 220 meq/ 100 g. The TCEC test was repeated (Method 9081, SW 846) using sodium acetate. The test resulted in a TCEC of 54.5 meq/100 g. The difference between values obtained for this material and published values for zeolites may be attributable to the greater heterogeneity in the material used in this study, compared to commercially available materials, or to the effect of the relatively large particle sizes utilized. Batch studies. Seven batch studies were conducted using synthetic metal solutions and soil extracts (Table 1). Extract composition: The P-extract was prepared by sequential surfactant extraction of organics from a burnpit soil followed by acid extraction of metals. The pH of this solution is approximately 1.1. A number of metals and organic compounds were present in the soil. Analysis of the extract was restricted to Pb, Zn and Cu concentrations for this study. The FBH extract was produced from a firing-range soil that was oxidized with a 0.01 M CaO solution and then extracted with 0.1 M acetic acid. This was filtered through 0.5-µm Whatman No. 5 filter paper and stored at room temperature. The pH of the FBH extract was approximately 4.5. pH Control: Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) may be present in the zeolite horizon or bed. Calcium ion (Ca") is released from the exchange sites when in contact with solutions containing ions for which it is more selective, such as lead. This results in a rise in solution pH over time. Acid washing removes most of the carbonates, eliminating the need for a buffer. Batch studies were conducted using both acid-washed zeolite (AW) and unwashed zeolite (UW) for performance comparison. The UW zeolite was rinsed with distilled deionized (DDI) water to remove fine soil particles. Both materials were dried at 105°C (220°F) overnight, so that the dry mass could be determined. The most serious problem for on-line coarse particle size measurement from a conveyor belt by image analysis is the overlap phenomenon that occurs between adjacent particles. A methodology is developed and described in this paper to estimate the sieve size distribution from the overlapped projected particle images as might be obtained from a conveyor belt. Two aspects of the overlap problem have been taken into consideration. First, several image processing algorithms were studied to find the most suitable technique to separate the projected overlapped particle images for narrow sized particles. These image segmentation algorithms include two-dimensional thresholding, edge detection and Watershed discrimination techniques. The other aspect of the overlap problem is related to the determination of the general kernel function for the partial particle images obtained from the projection of the overlapped particle bed. In this regard, a computer simulation technique was applied to mimic the overlapped particle bed for narrow sized particles, then the general kernel functions of the partial particle images were determined.

According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. No one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and. the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

Dow Water & Process Solutions (DW&PS) was approached by ASARCO Inc. to attempt to recover cobalt and copper from their copper solvent extraction (SX) raffinate. Cobalt is added to many copper electrowinning tankhouses to help to prevent lead electrode corrosion. With cobalt?s high price this can be a large expense. ASARCO has ore that contains a small amount of naturally occurring cobalt. Currently they have no way of capturing this high value metal from their leach or raffinate streams. DW&PS has some chelating resin technologies that should be able to help solve this problem.

The Don River & Central Waterfront Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel Project in Toronto extends approximately 10.5 km from Ashbridges Bay Treatment Plant west under Lake Shore Boulevard, north under Bayview Avenue and east through the Don River park area to the Coxwell Ravine Park. This project includes the installation of five intake shafts connected by 10.5 km of 6.3 m internal diameter tunnel and eleven drop shafts and vent shafts, connected to the tunnel by a series of adits. During the excavation of one of five intake shafts (20 m in diameter and 52 m deep), significant volumes of free phase oil and hydrocarbons were encountered. Due to the heavy inflows of the contaminants, excavation was stopped at the transition depth. The initial support of excavation needed to be redesigned, shaft had to be backfilled with CDF and installation of deeper secant piles are in progress to cut off contaminants. This paper outlines the initial plan for excavation as well as the design changes to the plan. The current status of the shaft excavation and lessons learned will be discussed.

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem. Also, when standard lime treatment is used, the settling characteristic of the precipitated solids is normally slow. In some instances, the necessity of added dissolved solids removal, (such as iron, needing aeration) add to the problem of concentrating neutralized solids. In a paper published in the September 1970 issue of "Coal Age," *the results of extensive test work by personnel of the Homer Research Laboratories of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Bethlehem Pa., were reported. This paper dealt specifically with development of a flow sheet to treat acid mine drainage (hereafter referred to as AMD) from coal mine operations. Beaver Creek Clean River Project will satisfy the consent decree requirements by capturing and treating combined sewage overflows. The project consists of, approximately, 2,700 feet of 30-inch trenchless pipe installation, a new screening/disinfecting facility, an expansion of an existing diversion structure, and a 72-inch internal diameter, 530-foot long mined tunnel. The tunnel portions are being progressed as early release packages. This paper presents the geotechnical exploration program and the subsurface conditions encountered; interpretation of the geotechnical conditions; and, approach to developing stand-alone packages for the tunnels to mitigate construction and schedule risks and continue to advance the project.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

The economic value of calcium carbonate when used as an extender or filler basically falls into two categories: 1. Lessening the cost of the final product to which it is added. 2. Contributing desirable physicals to the final product. In most instances, a combination of these two may be achieved. The mineral limestone which is found in abundant quantities in many areas of the world is the source of 99% (+) of the calcium carbonate used as fillers and extenders. Precipitated, or chemically formed, calcium carbonate is also available, but by comparison, in very limited quantities.

Under its program of advancing minerals technology, the Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a laboratory apparatus for continuous separation of minerals according to their dielectric properties. The unit consists of a rotating wire grid drum electrode and a fixed curved wire screen electrode positioned 3 mm apart. By applying high voltage across the electrodes, which are immersed in a dielectric fluid medium, a high-gradient electric field is produced. The high-dielectric-constant minerals are attracted and conveyed through the separator by the rotating drum electrode, whereas the low-dielectric-constant minerals settle through the fixed electrode. In typical tests, a sample of Montana chromite ore containing 43 percent chromite was concentrated to 72 percent chromite with 90 percent recovery.

"Microstructure stabilized crushed rock salt is a newly developed backfill material for infrastructural openings in HAW repositories. The motivation for this research is based on the fact that the microstructure stabilized crushed rock salt is considered to be superior to the currently used crushed rock salt. The avoiding of settlements with a simultaneous 100% backfilling of openings, early stabilization of the geological barrier and low permeability (< 10-14 m²) are the main improvements. With the newly developed backfill material, the gap between the crushed rock salt and the saliniferous composite backfill materials is closed. Due to the minimized amount of a binding agent, the material will still be easy to handle like a bulk material, yet guarantees close to 100 % backfill success without any settlements. This is accomplished with a long-term stable re-mineralization that is formed by the components of the binding agent. INTRODUCTION The permanent storage of high active waste in underground geological formations (HAW-repository) is the labored method in Germany as well as internationally. Experiences have been made over the last decades, e.g. in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (USA) and the mines Morsleben and Asse (Germany). For this purpose salt formations are preferred as host rock due to the adequate heat conductivity, creep capability, and low permeability. In order to maintain the low permeability of the host rock and to avoid any contact of the stored waste with the biosphere, the formation of flow paths has to be prevented. The cavities which have been mined for the purpose of waste storage have to be backfilled with material that is alike to the host rock. Therefore crushed rock salt is considered as an appropriate backfill material. Crushed rock salt is a bulk material that is produced by mining saliniferous formations. This material is mainly used in underground repositories as a dry backfill that is brought into the cavities by the use of mechanical (loading machine, slinger machine or scraper) or pneumatic energy (pneumatic stowing). In Germany it is intended to use dry crushed rock salt with a maximal grain diameter < 64 mm for backfill in a future repository in saliniferous formations. With this method applied, the porosity of the backfill is up to 35 % [1]."

There is substantial evidence to indicate that iron was reduced from its oxides to serve mankind&apos;s needs long before recorded civilization - - actually prior to 3500 B .C. For at least 5500 years man has been matching wits with Nature to find better methods of extracting this most common, yet essential, metal from her, grasp. And, during nearly all of this period, the vertical shaft furnace has played a principle role in this dramatic struggle.

Large excavations are well known to result in rock mass deformations which can present challenging situations for mine personnel. Most of the currently available ground movement monitoring devices fail to adequately provide mine operators with highly accurate and meaningful insights into rock mass deformation or displacement. The use of distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) in industries such as oil and gas and civil engineering has shown the potential of these sensors to deliver real-time, highly accurate, and long-range distributed strain measurements with great success. However, the use of these sensors in underground mining is limited to a few case studies.
